The Oscars is a highly anticipated event, televised for the entire world. But not many people actually know the history of the ceremony. The very first awards were presented on May 16, 1929. The event took place out of the public eye, only 270 people attended, and tickets were only five dollars. There was not any suspense for the awards, since the winners were declared three months prior to the actual ceremony. 84 years later, in 2013, only the most famous of celebrities attend the Oscars, and it is considered a great accomplishment to win an Academy Award. This year, the nominees were declared on January 10, 2013.

Show choir begins On Thursday, January 3, Xavier’s show choirs premiered their shows for the 2012-2013 year at Xhibition. Xhibition was held in the Regis-LaSalle Theatre. Xavier has two show choir groups. Xhilaration is Xavier’s varsity group. “Xhilaration is doing great so far this year! They just have some fine tuning to do on their show, but other than that they are doing quite well,” Xhilaration’s director Matt Walker said. This is Walker’s first year as the Xhilaration director after two years of being the Xuberance director. Xhilaration opened its competition season on January 5 at Premiere, Prairie High School’s competition and clinic. Xhilaration won outstanding ballad and placed fourth overall. Junior Nina Noronha has been a member of Xhilaration for two years now. “Even though we started the season off well, I know as the season goes on we will keep improving,” Noronha said. On January 12, both Xhilaration and Xavier’s prep group Xuberance competed at Waukee’s Star Struck competition. Xuberance finished day rounds in second place in the prep division, and Xhilaration placed fourth in 4A, making it into finals. In the final round, Xhilaration
