Community Service Day October 26, 2012
Habitat for Humanity A group of 18 sophomores, juniors, and seniors helped work on a Habitat for Humanity house that is being built in the flood zone on the northwest side of Cedar Rapids. They worked on hammering and taping to put up siding and they prepped the interior structure for cabinetry. A group from Xavier is planning on going back on November 20 to continue helping. If any student is interested, they should contact Ms. Olson.
The Xavier students volunteered at 175 locations around the city, more than any other year.
“It feels good doing things for the community.” -Thomas Ball ‘15 (Leaf Raking)
“It was fun being able to help paint the church and be with my friends.” -Colin O’Connell ‘14 (Parish)
“It was a good experience to work with volunteers from the community and other kids from Xavier.” -Josie Laska ‘13 (Habitat for Humanity)
Parishes and Catholic Worker House Students worked on projects at many of the Catholic parishes in the area. Students worked on cleaning, painting, and raking at the churches. Other students helped with construction inside of ReStore, the Habitat for Humanity store. Students in other grades also helped at the Catholic Worker House.
Leaf Raking The majority of Xavier students spent their day raking leaves and washing windows at various homes throughout the city for people who needed help. Xavier received the names from Aging Services and also from people who called the school.
