Bowling rolls through State competition After two weeks and four days of waiting due to a snowstorm delay, the Saints’ bowling teams bowled in State which was held on March 11, 2013 at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines. The boys’ team placed second overall in the 1A Division with a score of 3242, Xavier’s second highest bowling score in history. Sophomore Caleb Miller won the Individual State Championship, bowling a 492 series. Senior Kyle Elliott finished fourth with a series of 462, junior Zach Klimesh rolled a 423 series and senior Kirby Guge ended with a series of 416. Dubuque Wahlert scored 3368 in the boys’ competition, and swept State by winning both the girls’ and boys’ meets. “I achieved my goal of making it to State. When I saw that I won individuals, I was in shock and I couldn’t believe it. I was not expecting it,” Miller said.
The girls’ team finished eighth in the 1A Division. The girls’ senior leader and experienced State bowler, Tara Trcka, finished 19th in the individual competition with a series of 356. “It’s bittersweet being a senior and leaving the team next year. The season flew by so fast and I will miss high school bowling next year,” Trcka said. Coach Russ Cammacho was pleased with the performances of his teams. “I was very impressed with how focused the guys were at State. They bowled just about the best that they could have. For the girls’ team, I would say that getting to State was an accomplishment,” Camacho said. The girls’ team will be losing five seniors while the boys’ team will be losing three seniors in the 2013-2014 bowling season. Shannon Mulcahey Sports Writer
Senior captains ready The Xavier boys’ soccer team has put forth a great amount of preparation in hopes of starting the season off on a positive note. The team began their season on March 11 with two-a-day practices. They participated in two-a-days for two weeks, the second week being the week of Xavier’s spring break. Coach Hadzic will be returning as the head coach this season for the seventh year in a row. As head coach, he has led the team to two State Championships, and brought the team to the State Tournament five out of his six years. Isaac Frisch, Colin Gunn, Alex Haag, Daniel Cowden, Eli Smith, and Bryan Curphey have been named captains for the 2013 season. “Our goal is to make sure that the seniors influence everyone and encourage the team to put forth all their effort everyday so that we are prepared for when it is our time to win big games,” Frisch said. The Saints play tonight in the 2013 Jamboree held at Kingston at 3:30 pm against Solon High School. “I think thatour leadership and mentality will be different this season from the prior years.
We want to make sure all of our practices are intense and that everybody is ready to work their hardest,” Smith said. The Saints’ first official game of the season will be held on April 4 against Waterloo East in Waterloo. Lizzy McWhinney Sports Writer

Boomgarden Family Legacy As Xavier claims its most recent State Championship in girls’ basketball and adds to the total number of 25, there has been one family that outshines everyone while in the spotlight. Three of those championships belong to the Boomgarden family, who have sent three students through Xavier, all of whom have won a State Championship in their career. We ask the siblings what exactly made it possible to accomplish such impressive accolades.

What is something you learned from playing sports at Xavier?
You get what you earn.
Always give 100% because there is always someone out there working just as hard to be better than you.
It is not all about you; you are a piece of the puzzle that is bigger than yourself.
What advice would you give to current players to help them acheive the same success?
Success on the field starts with success in the classroom. Being mentally sharp will take you far on and off the field.
Take coaches’ constructive criticism to heart, but listen to their words rather than the way they might be be saying it.
Persistence and dedication are key to any sport, and work ethic will help you find success in any obstacle you may encounter in life after high school.
