Solo/Ensemble Contest Reality Shows Every year, band and choir students have the opportunity to perform at the Solo/Ensemble Contest. There are 16 choir students and 41 band students participating as solos or in groups. The band solo/ensemble open house was held on Monday, April 8 at Xavier starting at 7 p.m. At the open house, contestants performed their pieces as practice for their performance in the contest. “I hope they will be happy with their performances and do the best they can,” band director Ms. Kelli Swehla said. One of the vocal ensembles is a junior octet including Chad Airy, Chris Bauer, Harry Daubitz, Chad Eichler, Brennan Graeve, Matt Junge, Mason Montuoro, and Matt Thommana. “We all decided that coming together as a group of junior guys would be a really fun thing to do,” Airy said. “We are hoping for the best performance we can give and have a fun time doing it.” The octet is singing “Prayer of the Children” arranged by Andrea S. Klouse and “We Rise Again” arranged by Stephen Smith. At the Solo/Ensemble Contest, participants perform in front of up to three judges. At the end of their performance, the judges give the
participants ballots with comments and their ratings on them. Participants can receive division ratings of I, II, III, or IV. “It is a great performance opportunity for the students and I hope they enjoy it,” choir director Mr. Matt Walker said. “My favorite thing about solo/ ensemble is being able to learn new music and challenge myself,” senior Micaela Andrews said. “My goal is to get a division I rating which is the best, but I am also working on these pieces so I can perform them at my senior recital.” The Solo/Ensemble Contest will be held on Saturday, April 13 at Washington High School starting at 8 p.m.

Reality TV allows viewers to get an inside look into someone’s life. Whether it is Keeping up with the Kardashians or watching people survive off the land with Man vs. Wild, people are entranced by seeing the lives of others. This interest has made reality TV one of the most watched kinds of television since the 90’s. That does not change with this spring’s programming of new shows such as Splash!, and new seasons of shows like The Voice and Dancing with the Stars. Splash! premiered on March 19. In this show, celebrities have to master the art of Olympic diving and face their fears of heights and falling. Versions of the show aired in other countries and featured mentors like Tom Daley, a British diver. In the U.S. version, the stars are judged by David Boudia, the 2012 Olympic 10m diving champion, and Greg Louganis, an American diving legend. The show airs on Tuesdays on ABC. Another show receiving high ratings is The Voice on NBC. The new season of The Voice has two new judges hired to replace Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green. The new judges are Latin music star, Shakira, and
pop performer, Usher. The show does blind auditions to prove that appearance and clothes don’t matter, because it is truly all about the voice. The Voice is on Mondays and Tuesdays at 7 p.m. For more reality shows, go to ABC’s or NBC’s websites to find more programs like the ones in this article.
