Speech: the season begins Who’s in the hallway? Singing, miming, acting, and improvising are all elements an audience would witness in the upcoming speech season. Speech is a way for students to perform competitively with creativity. About 80 Xavier students are involved in speech with either large group or individual events. There are 13 large group events. The groups practice Monday through Thursday at various times. “I am most excited about how I edited a couple of movies like Stranger Than Fiction and went through the screenplay to write the script myself,” speech coach Mrs. Streif said. There are three musical theatre events, including the Broadway musicals Annie, Grease, and Chicago. The One Act Play comes from the movie Stranger Than Fiction. The Reader’s Theatre is Babe and the Choral Reading is The Tell-Tale Heart. The Mad Tea Party, The Crucible, and The Foreigner are some other pieces being performed by large groups. The speech showcase is on Monday, January 14 at 7 p.m. at Xavier. The groups will perform

their shows for the first time for friends and family. Performances are held in the Regis-LaSalle theatre and the choir room. The showcase is open to anyone and is free of charge. The District Large Group Contest will be held on Saturday, January 19. Groups that make state will compete on Saturday, February 2. After the state competition, the All-State Large Group Festival will be held on Saturday, February 16 at the Iowa State Center in Ames. Individual speech event preparation will start in January, and their first contest is on February 23. “My favorite part about speech is being able to act ridiculous and it is totally okay. I’m in it because it is awesome and I’m excited to have the chance to perform with my classmates,” junior Mason Montuoro said.
