Xavier boys’ and girls’ track teams compete in indoor season The Xavier boys’ and girls’ track teams have started out the 2012 season. The girls’ team started off the season at the Demon Indoor at the University of Iowa Recreation Center on March 6. Sophomore Molly Breitbach placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.13 seconds. The Saints distance medley featured senior Hannah Rochford, junior Audrey Richards, sophomore Molly Breitbach, and freshman Kayla Torson. This multi-grade team finished fourth with a time of 4:35.48 seconds. “We did good at the Demon Indoor and are hoping to progress throughout the rest of the season,” sophomore Molly Breitbach said. Cedar Rapids has a new sports team. The Titans are an indoor football team, the latest of Cedar Rapids professional teams. The Titans are part of the Indoor Football League, which consists of 16 teams throughout the United States. The IFL consists of two divisions, the United Conference, which the Titans are a part of, and the Intense Conference. On October 8 and 9, the Titans held their first team try-outs at The Sport Zone in Hiawatha. In order to try out for the team, players must have been at least 18 years old. This was a great opportunity for local athletes to display their talents. The team is made up of 28 players, some of these athletes are on the practice squad or they are injured. Some of the local players who made the team were three former University of

Northern Iowa players, Johnny Gray, Everett Roberts, and Adam Pinckney and former Cedar Rapids Washington running back Travis Rhone. The team has four coaches, head coach Kyle MooreBrown, offensive coordinator Tommie Williams, defensive coordinator Mitch Madland, and running back coach Jeff Wrede. The season kicked off on February 23 with a pre-season game against the Omaha Beef. The Titans are playing the season this year at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena and will move into the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown once renovations are completed. The first regular season game was March 3 against the Leigh Valley Stealhawks. The Titans came out wanting to show the local fans a good time. The Titans took the lead in the first quarter on a Travis Rhone run. The score

The boys’ track team runs today, March 22, at Kingston Stadium in the Washington Invitational. The girls’ run next also at Kingston for the Cedar Rapids Jefferson “Early Bird” Invitational at 10 a.m. on March 24. The girls’ also will also host Xavier’s first meet of the year on March 30 at 4:30 p.m. at Xavier.

at the end of the first quarter was 6 to 3 Titans. In the second quarter, quarterback Willie Copeland threw a 45 yard touchdown pass to Everett Roberts. Copeland threw another touchdown pass to James Terry. The score at the end of the first half was 26 to 13 Titans. The Titans came out in the second half fired up. They did not give up a point in the second half and managed to score one more time in the fourth quarter on a 5 yard pass from Copeland to Johnny Gray. The Titans won their season-opener 32 to 13. Copeland finished the game with 226 yards passing and threw three touchdown passes. The Titans compiled 261 yards of total offense, holding the

Stealhawks to only 129 yards. On March 9, the Titans traveled to Green Bay to take on the Green Bay Blizzard. The Titans struggled to get anything going in the game. Copeland and back-up quarterback Kenneth Black Jr., combined to throw six interceptions. The Titans ended up losing the game, 64-12. The team plays again tomorrow night against the Chicago Slaughter. The game is set to begin at 7:05 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
