Xtravaganza
Xtravaganza was held Saturday, March 2, at Xavier High School. The Xavier show choirs, Xhilaration and Xuberance, were the hosts of this middle school competition. All the proceeds that were earned go to the show choir program at Xavier. As part of the festivities, the high school show choir members signed up to be room hosts. A few members were in charge of rooms that where the middle school performers got ready. Throughout the day of the competition, the hosts catered to the needs of their guests as they prepared to entertain the audience. The sky was the limit for the room decorators. The themes ranged from the depths of the ocean to downtown China. Some room hosts took guests into their wildest fantasies from a candy land to the dangerous adventures of the jungle. Some hosts even chose a theme for their room according to the songs their guests performed. The decorators were given a 40 dollar limit to make their room the best it could be. After the rooms were decorated, the show choir directors, Mr. Walker and Mrs. Hussey, judged the rooms and picked the best. The winner got a gift card to reward them for their hard work. “My favorite part of the day is seeing the choir’s expressions as they walk into their room for the first time,” junior Kayla Lansing said. Other high school performers helped in the cafeteria, assisted the judges, and helped set up the critique and prep room. Parent volunteers helped with concession and parking during the competition day. High school performers, parents, and volunteers made the entire day run smoothly. Middle school students were not the only ones to hit the stage on Saturday. Xhilaration performed before the daytime awards were announced. Following their show, there was a special appearance by Xavier alum and recent American Idol contestant Gabe Brown. Brown made the Top 40 during this season’s competition. Xuberance then performed after finals. Juniors Harry Daubitz and Matt Junge also took to the stage with a song they had prepared for the occasion. Daubitz sang while Junge accompanied him on the piano. The Xavier show choirs will hold their final performances on Thursday, March 7, in the RegisLasalle Theatre. There will be two shows, one at 6:00 p.m. and one at 8:00 p.m. Tickets will go on sale in the Activities Office on March 6.

John &Con: Movie Edition: Argo
Although I didn’t think it would ever arrive, March is finally here. Spring is right around the corner, March Madness is starting, and most importantly, all the Hollywood award shows are over. February is the shortest calendar month, but to me it always drags on the most. Hollywood’s award shows don’t make the month go any faster - all the predictions, who wore what best, and movie actor drama sickens me. Not only that, to me the worthiness of those chosen to win the awards seems to have faltered in recent years (yes, I am referring to how Babel won album of the year over channel ORANGE). So when I heard Argo had won Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, it’s safe to say I was wary of how good it actually was. After sitting down and watching it, however, I have gained a little respect for the Academy.Argo is a great movie. Directed by Ben Affleck, who also stars as the film’s main character Tony Mendez. The movie revolves around the infamous Iran Hostage

crisis where 52 American citizens were held hostage at the American Embassy for 444 days. However, the movie also centers on a group of citizens who have escaped the embassy and are secretly living in the home of a Canadian ambassador. Mendez, who works for the CIA, creates an elaborate plan to get the citizens out of Iran by posing as a Sci-Fi movie crew. The plan includes writing a fake script for the fake movie, entitled “Argo”. The movie balances suspense with humor, and the portion of the movie that involves the writing of the movie script brought several good laughs. Affleck brilliantly keeps the dark and daunting mood of the dire situations light, and creates a film that kept me on the edge of my seat. I strongly recommend that everyone watch the movie, but ask your parents beforehand, as it is rated R.
