Customer wins Minister urges citizens to take Covid-19 seriously with Ideal Butchery

MINISTER: National Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize

National Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize is appealing to South Africans to change their behaviour towards Covid-19. On Sunday, Mkhize announced that 6334 new cases had been confirmed in SA, bringing the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases to 138 134. Mkhize said government has mobilised every resource and faculty at their disposal to effect the necessary interventions in dealing with the pandemic. "But government cannot manage this unilaterally. Every single South African now needs to focus on adhering to recommendations pertaining to

non-pharmaceutical interventions. We are extremely concerned that fatigue seems to have set in and South Africans are letting down their guard at a time when the spread of infection is surging," Mkhize said. He said that officials have noted poor, or in some cases, no social distancing taking place in communities. "Masks are being abandoned or not worn properly and there is laxity setting in around frequent hand-washing. This will directly influence the rise in numbers in the next two weeks. We must all appreciate that there is a direct causal link between the surge of

cases and our ability, or inability, to adhere to these very basic principles," he said. In a statement issued on Sunday, Mkhize warned that at this stage, there is no vaccine or cure for Covid-19. "Our ability to break the cycle of infection depends on our willingness to remain focused and disciplined and take non-pharmaceutical interventions seriously. We can beat this pandemic together we already proved this during the lockdown. It remains in each and every citizens hands to admonish family members, colleagues and friends who refuse to adhere to measures that protect lives by limiting the spread of this virus," he said. Speaking during a media briefing on Sunday, KwaZuluNatal Premier chastised those hosting mass gatherings. "Some people have started congregating in large numbers to participate in family feasts, parties, and religious gatherings, among others. This failure to take heed of the regulations could have serious consequences and will not be tolerated," he said. -IOL

139 teachers in KZN test positive for coronavirus

More than 100 teachers and 37 pupils in KwaZulu-Natal have been infected with Covid19. This is according to KZN premier, Sihle Zikalala. Speaking during a briefing on Sunday, Zikalala said 139 teachers had tested positive for the coronavirus. He said Umgungundlovu District had the highest number of infected teachers. Zikalala also noted that there was no need to close schools for 14 days each time there was a positive case reported at a school. "Ordinarily, it should take the Department of Education no

more than three days to decontaminate an affected school and thereafter allow teaching and learning to continue," the premier said. He said since the re-opening of school earlier this month, there has been an increase in the number of positive cases. "Schools are a reflection of communities where they operate. As we see numbers of confirmed positive cases increase everyday across the country, we also expect to see some increase in reported positive cases in schools," he said. He said what remained

critical, is how the situation would be managed so that the risk of further spread is minimised. "Obviously, no measures can replace strict adherence to health protocols and regulations. Both the departments of Health and Education have handled the cases extremely well." "We are encouraging people to allow the Department of Health to take a lead in managing Covid-19 cases, even in schools. The health department will assess the situation in every school that has a positive case. This will

include giving advice whether everyone need to be tested or testing will be limited to primary or close contacts," Zikalala said. He emphasised that the safety of pupils, teachers and support staff remained a priority. According to the KZN Department of Health, there are more than 8400 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the province. Of those, at least 4717 are active cases while 3602 people have recovered. More than 100 people have died from Covid19-related illnesses.

The Department of Basic Education has issued a set of directions to further provide clarity and guidance on a variety of matters affecting the basic education sector in the COVID-19 environment. The directions were signed by the Minister and issued in the Government Gazette for implementation in the sector. The key issues addressed include the dates for the phased return of other grades back to school. The directions confirm the date of 6 July 2020 as the date for the following grades to go back to school. Pre-Grade R; Grade R; Grade 1; Grade 2; Grade 3; Grade 6; Grade 10; Grade 11; Schools of Skill: Years 2 and 3; Schools for Learners with Severe Intellectual Disabilities (“SID”): Grades R, 1, 2, 3 and final year (Occupational); Schools with Learners with Severe and Profound Intellectual Disabilities (“LSPID”): Years 1-3; and Schools with autistic learners: Junior Group (below 13 years) and final year (18 years and above). A notable addition in the directions is in regard to the deviation from the phased approach by schools that wish to bring back other grades to school. A school may be permitted to deviate from the phased return to school in respect of specific grades or dates, as contemplated in direction 5(1): Provided that such school complies with the minimum health, safety and social distancing measures and requirements on COVID-19, referred to in section 5 of the DBE Standard Operating Procedures and the DBE Guidelines and, in the case of a public school, also has all the COVID-19 essentials in place and the principal and chairperson of the governing body or school board or their delegated official notifies the Head of Department of the Provincial Education Department. The directions also emphasize strict adherence to all health and safety requirements put in place in schools. The Department of Basic Education will continue to monitor the return of learners to schools with a sharp focus on safety for all. “We will continue to work hard in schools to make sure that we protect our learners, teachers and employees within schools. It is important to work together to ensure that we beat the virus,” she said. The Department is working hard to make sure that all schools are COVID-19 compliant before it can receive learners. What is also important is to ensure that even during school hours and beyond we stick to the basic requirements of wearing the mask, sanitize, wash hands and keep physical distancing”, said Minister Angie Motshekga. She urged members of the community to desist from visiting schools as that also increased the risk for more infections.
