Maphumulo murderer to spend life in jail By Xpress Reporter

Last week, the Maphumulo Regional Court sentenced Syabonga 'Nyokanyoka' Mthethwa (30) to life imprisonment for murder. His sentence came after the court heard how he killed Sphamandla “Mansonso” Mkhize (36) on 31 May 2015.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, Mkhize was at Tshobo area, Maphumulo at 06:40, when the accused produced his firearm and fired a shot towards him. “He sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was declared dead at the scene. The accused fled the

scene after an incident. A case of murder was opened for investigation at Maphumulo SAPS. The dedicated team of detectives started their investigation, Mthethwa was traced and arrested in 2016. He made several court appearances and was remanded in custody until his sentence,” said Mbele.

In an attempt to curb water shortages in various areas, the ILembe District Municipality has handed over 110 JOJO tanks to its four municipalities. On Friday last week, the municipality handed over water tanks to Mandeni Local Municipality at Isithebe Hall, Mandeni. The tanks were donated to 10 districts in the province of KwaZulu Natal by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to assist with water provision in the province. ILembe looked at the 'hotspot' in the region. IDM then deemed it fit to hand over 40 tanks to Ndwedwe Municipality, 40 to

iLembe hands over JoJo tanks Maphumulo Local Municipality, 20 to Mandeni Local Municipality and 10 to KwaDukuza Municipality. Speaking at the handover of the tanks, Mandeni Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Siphesihle Zulu urged the public not to vandalise the tanks especially during protests. “Today we would be speaking a different story had those Jojo tanks not been destroyed. The district would be adding not replacing the tanks. It seems we are working backwards as government and

not forward and that is a huge problem in the district and the country,” stated Zulu. ILembe District Municipality Deputy Mayor, Cllr Dolly Shandu said that the district's only request to the local municipalities is to position the tanks in places where it will be easy for water tankers or trucks to access. “The municipality spends a lot of money fixing water tankers because a lot of the access roads in the district are inaccessible for vehicles as big these trucks and taking into consideration the load they

carry,” she said. Deputy Mayor Shandu also touched on the alleged assault of water tanker drivers and their assistants in Isithebe when delivering water during late hours. “The reason these deliveries sometimes take place in the evening is because we have some residents who see a water tanker and bring out ten and more containers knowing very well that there are other residents who still need to collect water. So when the tanker runs out of water, residents that did not get water end up assaulting our staff and we cannot have that anymore. Should this abuse of municipal workers continue, we will have no choice as a district but to stop servicing those areas,” said Cllr Shandu.

KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu, has successfully officiated the opening of the 02nd BRICS Employment Working Group Meeting and BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers Meeting currently taking place in Zimbali until 03 August 2018. In his remarks the Mayor requested the International Labour Organization (ILO) to come to the party and assist to develop and empower some 500 informal traders in the KwaDukuza Municipality with amongst other things, Skills D e v e l o p m e n t , Entrepreneurship and also assisting to uplift the premises where they trade.

Mthembu calls for empowerment of informal traders “Assisting to formalise this space will assist to intensify the fight against poverty, unemployment and inequality,” said Mthembu. Mthembu also conceded that BRICS remains the key to unlock some of the answers to our current socio-economic challenges. He also alluded to the fact that, in BRICS, South Africa is in a partnership with nations that share both our progressive perspective and our commitment to rebuilding and transforming institutions of global governance. “We are confident that this sitting which commences

today, will be characterised by fruitful engagements and lead to productive outcomes. Because in our view BRICS holds the key to unlock some of the answers to our current socio-economic challenges,” he said. “As South Africans, we are particularly proud that, in BRICS, we are in partnership with nations that share both our progressive perspective and our commitment to rebuilding and transforming institutions of global governance. Feeding scheme, Tinley Manor Breakfast Teaching project, is changing lives in Tinley Manor Primary School, by feeding 150 vulnerable children every morning before teaching and learning commences. This great initiative is on the brink of collapsing as it lacks sponsors which hinders the project from meeting its CHILDREN: Happy faces after having breakfast served by Tinley Manor Breakfast Teaching Project

Then we decided to initiate this project. Through this project we have sparked incentive for some children to come to school daily and it

has improved their learning capacity. Since last year it has been a rough road as we lack sponsors which derails us from reaching our goal. We currently have one sponsor which is Siza Water and we are grateful for their support, but the demand is very high in the school. Taxi accident claims four lives ACCIDENT: Police and paramedics at the scene on the N2 where a taxi went over an embankment killing 4 and injuring 10 people on Monday morning

A tragic taxi accident in the early hours of Monday morning on the N2 near Tongaat Plaza claimed the lives of four people including a 10-monthold baby. It is alleged that a taxi driver carrying churchgoers lost control of the vehicle and went over an embankment before rolling a few times. According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Shaun Herbst, the driver lost control of the vehicle. “All

the patients were treated by Paramedics and have been transported to a hospital by various ambulance services for further treatment. The exact cause of the crash is being investigated,” said Herbst. In a separate incident, one person was killed while four others suffered injuries when two cars collided on the N2 near Zinkwazi on Saturday.

Names of places continue to form a significant component of place making and therefore it is important that names of streets/places and features are reflective of our multicultural society. It is against this background that KwaDukuza Municipality invited all persons and organisations having an interest in the proposal regarding the naming of the newly renovated Ballito Civic Building, to submit proposed new names. In line with the policy, the process unfolded and Council at its meeting of the 26/07/2018 vide resolution C1156 resolved, that the newly renovated Ballito Civic Building be named as “NOKUKHANYA LUTHULI HOUSE”. KwaDukuza Council is really honored and proud to recognize the contribution made by Ms. Nokukhanya Luthuli. She was not only the wife of one of the most respected statesman, Nobel peace prize winner and former Chief of Groutville, Albert Luthuli but also an active member of the community and played a huge role in bettering the lives of the residents of Groutville. As part of her contributions, she opened and operated a Post Office from her residence. At one stage she also rallied the women of Groutville and led a movement that led to the establishment of a local clinic. In the words of President Mandela, “Mama Nokukhanya shared the trenches of struggle with our beloved leader Chief Albert Luthuli she was one of those leaders who contributed to our struggle away from the limelight. But she will go down in history as a member of the battalions of resilient women whose spirit could not be broken by the pain and suffering the apartheid government imposed on them”. It is known that Ms Nokukhanya Luthuli was Chief Albert's support structure throughout his political career so it is fitting that we recognize her commitment to the area of KwaDukuza. TVGB denies Darnall 'Ralph Reuben Cup’ The Ralph Reuben Memorial Volleyball Cup hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association has once again evaded going home as Darnall United as they crashed out 2-1 to TV and Gate Boyz in a pulsating final played before a huge crowd at the association courts last Thursday. Reuben, who was one of the founding players of the

unbeatable Darnall Volleyball Club playing from the junior ranks right up until the senior ranks was a pivotal player who led Darnall to numerous championship victories throughout his short-lived career passed on under tragic circumstances and since then, his family have kept his name alive by sponsoring this annual tournament. However, it

seems destined that the cup is being elusive to his founding club. Led by Nolan Govender, TVGB once again denied Darnall the opportunity as they met in the repeat of the Xpress Times Easter Knockout where TVGB were winners by the same margin (2-1). The final did not disappoint the vociferous supporters,
