employee at a local pharmacy, said she was waiting for her husband to pick her up when she accidentally fell into the manhole, on King Shaka Street.

Press Businesspeople operating in the vicinity said the manhole has been left uncovered for some time, with all attempts to get the authorities to attend to the problem falling on deaf ears. The woman had to be lifted out of the manhole by bystanders, whose presence averted a potential tragedy for her. Unfortunately she still sustained some injuries and is still dealing with trauma. One of the businesspeople in the area has since placed a caution tape around the manhole to warn members of the public of the danger. The media liaison officer for KwaDukuza Municipality Sipho Mkhize has meanwhile informed Xpress Times that this matter has been escalated to the municipality's civil engineering department for remedial action.

Illegal dumping a growing concern ILLEGAL-DUMPING: An eye sore in Sofaya near Ntshawini ward 15 where illegal dumping has become a daily occurrence.

By Xpress Reporter

Illegal dumping and littering is still an ongoing problem in Sofaya Ward 15 in KwaDukuza. In this area it's no longer uncommon to see or find huge piles of waste, old house items, construction waste or used products dumped by the roadside. This comes with a lot of adverse effects to the health of residents. According to Sandile Khumalo from Ward 15, relevant authorities have been informed about this on countless times. “There's a piece of land on the other side of the road and they've made the whole area a dumping ground. It's an eye sore since most of residents fetch their

drinking water near the illegal dumping site. It stinks when it's hot and after it rains; it's so bad that you can't even leave the windows open,” stated the concerned residents. Speaking to Xpress Times Ward 15 councillor Patrick Bonginkosi Mabaso said he's well aware of the matter and urged residents to refrain from using the area as a dumping site. “It's a sad reality but as leaders we must fortify our fight against this. Traditional leaders have also weighed in on this matter but not much progress has been made. We plead to KwaDukuza Municipality to assist us and put notice boards in the area, indicating

that it's illegal to dump waste in that area. This pose a great threat to the health of surrounding households,” alluded Cllr Mabaso. In another story regarding uncollected rubbish, last week Ward 19 residents were fuming due to uncollected refuse that was laying on their drive ways for days. One resident cited that some residents had to take their waste to the dumping sites. On Thursday 26 August 2021, it surfaced that KwaDukuza Municipality was running behind schedule for collecting refuse in some areas due to certain circumstances but most parts of KwaDukuza was attended to.

Interventions announced last week by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula to deal with problems relating to driving licence renewals are welcomed and indicate real progress in resolving challenges faced by motorists throughout the country. in time for those with expired documents to renew them. Minister Mbalula announced that all licences learner's licences, driving licences, professional driving permits and temporary licences which expired between 26 March 2020 and 31 August 2021 will be valid until the end of March next year. The Minister noted a lack of capacity at Driving Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs), corruption, the slow speed and unavailability of the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS), faulty live capture units (for fingerprints and ID verification), and faulty eye testing machines as the main challenges facing the centres in the provision of adequate

services. “We are naturally happy that many of the solutions we have been proposing for some have been considered. Among these is the establishment of more DLTCs, the introduction of mobile centres and kiosks at busy centres, extended operating hours of the DLTCs, the ability of DLTCs to accept online payments, and the submission of eye tests by optometrists directly to NaTIS. This all makes sense and will, hopefully, ease pressure on the system. But now it is all a question of implementation,” notes the AA. In addition, the Minister also noted planned improvements to the online booking system in Gauteng. The AA says this is long overdue and must be done as a matter of urgency. According to Minister Mbalula, there is a backlog of 2.8m licences which need to be renewed nationally but that only 1.2m renewals have so far been processed. This means that 42% of licences must still be renewed. This is in addition to the motorists who require renewals which accrue 2 Cactus Rd, Stanger Manor VPK Centre 079 329 7827/078 362 9048 monthly. The longest serving member of South African Democratic Teachers Union in KwaDukuza Branch Lucky Narayan has tendered his resignation letter due to health concerns. It is reported that Narayan opted to resign because he has been battling sickness for quite some time which interrupted his work in the union. In a statement to SADTU members, the union said Lucky Narayan's leadership qualities will be missed and wished him a speedy recovery. “Cde Lucky is the longest serving member of the BEC in KwaDukuza. He started leading our glorious movement when one was still in high school. He has contributed a

lot in grooming people like myself and others. No one can mention SADTU KwaDukuza without Cde Lucky's name. That's how much he has contributed to the struggle of workers. He did not only make a meaningful contribution to SADTU but also to MDM structures,” statement read. “We know that he is a fighter and he will eventually defeat the sickness that he is fighting. Lucky remains a dedicated member of SADTU and a stalwart of the organization. Both the ANC and SADTU still need cadres of Lucky's calibre. We therefore wish him a speedy recovery and all the best in his future endeavours,” added SADTU.

SADTU: Lucky Narayan

Speaking to Xpress Times, SADTU Secretary in KwaDukuza Nduduzo Ngcobo confirmed the resignation of Lucky Narayan and wished him a better health, Ngcobo further revealed that the union conducted by-election to fill the vacant positions due to the departure of three members Mthembeni Zuma (former chairperson), Bongi Qumbisa (former deputy chairperson) and Lucky Narayan (former treasurer).

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala says the province has so far administered just over 2 million Covid-19 vaccines. Briefing the media at the weekend, on the province's response to the third wave of the pandemic, the premier said the province has set itself a target of vaccinating 7.5 million people, to achieve population immunity. KwaZulu-Natal is currently recording the highest number of daily new infections in the country. Zikalala echoed President Cyril Ramaphosa's earlier sentiments that people between the ages of 18 and 34 have responded with enthusiasm to government's call for vaccination. “We share the sentiments that have been expressed by academics elsewhere that the vaccination of the over-18 cohort is good for us in a number of ways. Firstly, it means that all adults with co-morbidities are now eligible for vaccination. “But secondly, as a relatively young country, the over-18 population group is quite sizeable and influential. It therefore has the power to change the narrative around vaccination and make it positive. This is especially so, on social media, which is one place

KZN reaches 2 million Covid-19 vaccinations that shapes people's opinions and their general outlook,” Zikalala stated. The Premier added that the province currently had more than 59 000 active Covid-19 cases. More than 13 000 people had so far succumbed to Covid-related complications. He said figures show that the districts that are currently recording higher numbers of new infections are eThekwini, iLembe, Umgungundlovu, King Cetshwayo, Zululand and uMkhanyakude. “We would want to emphasise that, in order to defeat COVID-19, vaccination is the obvious key and most important intervention to save lives. Of course, this must be done in conjunction with nonpharmaceutical prevention measures, such as the wearing of masks, regular hand washing or hand sanitizing and social distancing. “We have begun taking a closer look at whether the people who get admitted at our facilities were

indeed vaccinated, so that we can establish scientifically how many of them recover, and how many eventually lose their lives,” he said. Fourth wave The Premier has also moved to allay fears about the anticipated fourth wave of the pandemic. He says at this stage it's still too early to make any meaningful predictions. “Our third wave seems to be taking longer to subside than the other two waves. We continue to closely monitor trends associated with it. At this point, it is difficult to say what kind of December holiday seasons we will have in so far as infections and fatalities are concerned. Only time will tell in this regard. “But, for our part, we are implementing our plan, which is only as good as the public are willing to play their part by getting vaccinated, and also observing all non-pharmaceutical prevention measures, which we are urging them to do,” Zikalala said.

Granny left destitute as fire destroys house

BURNS: A Charlottedale granny sustained serious burn wounds when her house caught fire

By Xpress Reporter

A Charlottedale granny is extremely traumatized after she sustained serious burn wounds in a fire that destroyed her house on Friday morning. The granny, who lives with her grandson, was rescued by neighbours who braved the flames to save her life. But now she and her grandson have been left utterly destitute. It has been reported that the granny was praying when the candle fell over, igniting the fire. Thobisile Nkosi of the EFF has The ANC Women's League in the General Gizenga Mpanza Region held an event on Sunday, 29 August 2021, to wrap up Women's Month. The event took place at Dludla Community Hall in Maphumulo. The League noted the praiseworthy role played by women in nation building. “Every year, in August, our country marks Women's Month, when we pay tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. “This year marks 65 years since the watershed 1956 women's march to the Union Buildings. The year 2021 also marks the twentysixth anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, which created a platform for greater gender equality,” the League said in a

Nkosi is making an appeal for donations, either in cash or in the form of building materials, to help the granny rebuild. Inkatha Freedom Party's local

campaign manager Cyril Pandaram has told the Xpress Times that his party will also be making a contribution, while ward 29 Councillor Njabulo Cele said he had alerted the disaster management unit at the KwaDukuza Municipality to the plight of the old lady. To make a donation to the granny, members fo the public are urged to contact the Xpress Times office and speak to Musa Mnyandu.

PSG and Man City to meet in Champions League group stage

Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, two of the leading candidates to win the Champions League, will face each other in the group stage of this season's competition after coming out together in last Thursday's draw. Pep Guardiola's City beat PSG in the semi-finals of last season's Champions League on the way to losing the final to Chelsea in Porto. Qatar-owned Paris responded to that disappointment by signing Lionel Messi and there is a chance that the two meetings of the clubs could see the Argentine come up against his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward is being strongly linked with a move to Abu Dhabi-owned City from Juventus before the European transfer window closes on Tuesday, August 31. "It is special, Manchester City are one of the best teams in Europe and have been

fighting to win the Champions League for 10 years," said PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino. "The challenge is to try to finish first in the group." The clubs are in Group A along with RB Leipzig and Belgian champions Club Brugge. Leipzig were already in a group with PSG last season, the two sides qualifying for the last 16 ahead of Manchester United. The Germans, who also lost to PSG in the 2020 semifinals, lost coach Julian Nagelsmann to Bayern Munich in the summer and replaced him with the American Jesse Marsch. Holders Chelsea will play Juventus in Group H and both clubs will be expected to advance from a section also including Russian champions Zenit Saint Petersburg and Malmo. The Swedish champions

knocked out Steven Gerrard's Rangers in the third qualifying round. Saint Petersburg will host this season's Champions League final on May 28 next year. Thursday's draw in Istanbul also saw Barcelona come out in a fascinating Group E along with Bayern, Benfica and Ukrainian champions Dynamo Kiev. For Barca it will be a first meeting with Bayern since they were humbled 8-2 by the German giants in Benfica's Estadio da Luz in Lisbon in the quarter-finals a year ago. Ronald Koeman's side are embarking on a first Champions League campaign since the departure of Messi, with whom they last lifted the trophy in 2015. "Barcelona is a different team without Messi, but they still have good players in their ranks. We want to get through the group, ideally as winners,"

said Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. Liverpool will face Spanish champions Atletico Madrid, meaning a return to the Wanda Metropolitano stadium where they beat Tottenham Hostpur in the 2019 final to win the European Cup for the sixth time. Jurgen Klopp's side will also play AC Milan and FC Porto in Group B. Milan, the seventime winners of the trophy, are back in the Champions League for the first time since 2013/14 after coming second in Serie A last season. "I laughed, to be honest, pretty loud because it is a tough group obviously," Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com. Manchester United came out in Group F with Villarreal, Atalanta and Swiss champion s Young

Boys. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side lost to Villarreal on penalties in last season's Europa League final. Real Madrid, the record 13time European champions, are in the same group as Italian champions Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine for the second straight season. Debutants Sheriff Tiraspol of Moldova complete Group D. They have come through four qualifying ties to reach the group stage, notably knocking out Red Star Belgrade and Dinamo Zagreb. Erling Haaland's Borussia Dortmund will play fellow former winners Ajax as well as Sporting Lisbon and Besiktas in Group C, while Lille,

Sevilla, Red Bull Salzburg and Wolfsburg make up Group G. The first round of fixtures will be played on September 14 and 15. It remains to be seen if UEFA will lift its blanket ban on away fans attending matches in European competition. Pressure group Football Supporters Europe this week called for UEFA to reconsider, saying "guidelines on away fans should be decided on a case-by-case basis in line with the local public health situation". UEFA will release a fixture schedule for the group stage in due course. The final group fixtures will be played on December 7 and 8.

In the Southern Hemisphere the 1st September of every year is considered to be the dawn of a new season in our year, that of Spring. A season that is welcomes, as it is a season of growth, blooms, leaves on the trees, jubilation in the animal surrounds, fruits in the making that is seasonable. Flowers everywhere, the sun is shining, bees are buzzing, and birds are singing, which means one thing - Spring has finally arrived! Most of us grow up just knowing that the 1st of September is Spring Day, we don't know how or why, but we do. This had us wondering:

why exactly do we celebrate the first day of Spring? Turns out that technically the first day of September isn't even the first natural day of spring. That only happens later in the month, on the 22nd of September this year, and is determined by when the Earth's equator passes through the centre of the Sun. This leads to night and day being the same length once a year. Now the reason 1 September is seen as the official Spring Day is because of astronomical reasons. Way back in 1780, a group of international meteorologists decided they were going to break the calendar year into four quarters.
