Xenophobia takes off in KwaDukuza By Xpress Reporter

KwaDukuza may have just put itself on the map for Xenophobia as a prominent Chinese businessman claims that this happened to him at his business place on Tuesday morning. “Xenophobia can manifest itself in many ways involving the relations and perceptions of an ingroup towards an outgroup, including a fear of losing identity, suspicion of its activities, aggression, and desire to eliminate its presence to secure a presumed purity and exhibited in the form of an uncritical exaltation of another culture.” (Wikipedia) According to the 34 years old victim, Lin Feng Hui (pronounced as Lin Fung Hoowee), the incident started, to his knowledge, because of a truck that was double parked offloading in front of his store. He claims that officers from KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) Crime and Prevention approached him at approximately 9:30am and started verbally abusing him over the offloading of goods to his store. He added that the officers asked the driver of the truck to go back to Durban. “They grabbed me by my collar and swore me (F word) and said this is South Africa not China and pepper sprayed me,” said Hui. He also added that an Indian officer then told him: “I will show you who we are, I will send you back.” Hui had a firearm on him and said that he believed officers thought he was going to draw his weapon. An eyewitness said he saw what was happening and attempted to help Hui. “I noticed that while Hui was in handcuffs the officer decided to use even more pepper spray,” he said. The eyewitness also added that the officers said they will arrest him too and pointed a cocked gun at Hui. The Chinese national claims that the abuse did not stop at his King Shaka Street business. “The officers took me to their offices and from there took me into a

Fast and drunk A general speed trapping exercise netted traffic officers more than they bargained for. NPA officers allege that they stopped a KIA Sportage on the N2 near the Umvoti Bridge. The driver was travelling at a speed of 170kmph. As the driver alighted, he had a strong smell of alcohol. A breathaliser test proved he was over the legal limit and he was taken for a blood/alcohol test. Michael Dumisani Ngcobo (50), a male nurse from Ngwelezane Hospital, is out on bail and due back at court on 16 January 2013. Whoonga Town The availability, supply, demand and high numbers of people in the whoonga industry is a cause for alarm. Whereas everyone speaks of this evil and the local media highlights its presence and ill effects, what tangible steps have been taken to address this scourge? A random operation last week by police netted four culprits in the CBD area and one dagga dealer at Ntshawini. Selby Ntuli (26) of Zamani was arrested with 11 straws, Simphiwe Hlongwane (23) of Ntshawini was caught with 20 straws whilst Petros Zulu (21) of Dawnside had 1 straw and Arnold Padayachee (18) of Northlands Park had 5 straws. Innocent Guilundo (28) was charged for dealing in dagga after police raided his room and found a large quantity of parcels prepared for sale. All were granted bail and are due before

November 1, 2013

court on different days in January 2014.

and is due back at court on 19 December.

Flying high A local man who purchased a computer from Dion Wired online using a falsified credit card is in hot water. An Absa Bank fraud investigator was alerted when the holder of the card reported that he had not made the purchase on 17 October. The investigator secured the services of a colleague to pose as the delivery courier accompanied by a local police detective. Once the culprit had signed for the package at an empty premises in King Shaka Street, he was arrested after a short chase by the detective. Mkhelende Mleya (27) is expected to seek bail this week.

A crazy world Two youths appeared in court on a charge of robbery and murder. It is alleged by the niece of the deceased that at about 11:30am, they were at home with two builders. Two youths appeared and one took a cellphone from the deceased before shooting her twice in the head. A local resident pointed out the two culprits who were arrested almost immediately after the incident. Victor Thusi (31) and Brian Luthuli (28) of Melville are expected to seek bail at court this week.

Braai + Booze = Hospital When a group of friends realised that one of their revelers was out of control, they decided to correct his faulty behaviour. Wiseman Gumbi is today a much wiser person knowing full well the mindset of one who is very drunk. Gumbi alleges that the group was enjoying a braai and an abundance of alcohol well past midnight. At this stage, Mfanafuthi Masuku began hitting anyone whom he encountered. Gumbi tried to pacify the drunkard who broke a bottle and stabbed him twice in his hand. He then brought a sudden end to the festivities by chasing them all away. Masuku was arrested the following day

Lucky strike Another visitor to this town has left with bitter memories. Luan Martins of Pinetown alleges he was parked in the Newtown area at about midday. He was approached by two youths. One got into his vehicle and threatened him with a knife whilst they removed his cellphone, wrist watch and police sunglasses. He followed them into the nearby park in his bakkie which became bogged in mud and chased after them on foot armed with a stick and bricks. They fled into an abandoned building and he lost them. A short while later he was assisted by local crime prevention members who managed to arrest Cedric Nyawo (24). The culprit is due at court this week to seek bail.

By Xpress Reporter The SACP in the Greater KwaDukuza District held a Land and Service Delivery Mini-rally as part of the annual Red October campaign in Ntshawini Community Hall, KwaDukuza Ward 26 recently. According to the South African Communist Party (SACP) District Convenor, Nhlanhla Banda, the event was attended by speakers from their fraternal organisation in ANC Regional Secretary, Muzi Sithole, COSATU KwaDukuza Local chairperson: Howard Thwalinkunzi, YCLSA Organizing Secretary and Thami Mngome Zulu; delivering the keynote address was SACP Moses Mabhida (KZN) PEC member, “Cadre” Lanford Mdibi

SACP host iconic Red October campaign “The Red October draws strength from the great October Revolution of 1917 which took Russia from a mere backward feudal state to a world superpower,” said Banda. He also said that the SACP in this district commends the progress made by the ANC-led government in delivering services to the people within a space of 19 years in governance. “These successes surpass the combined record of the apartheid government and its Bantustan quasi-states by far! The mini rally affirmed that whilst a lot still remains to be done, however, a lot

has been achieved and this is a fact that the majority of our people appreciate despite the unprecedented attack on our movement, distortion of historical facts and demonization of our leadership which is being orchestrated by the lapdogs of imperialism in the form of opposition, racist media and the pseudo- intelligentsia,” said Banda. The SACP convenor also said that opposition parties are proving to be very useful in his words: “this neo-liberal offensive which inter alia seeks to re-introduce apartheid patterns in our society.”

How to Drive Safely in the Rain By Xpress Reporter

With the recent spate of prolonged wet, rainy and cloudy conditions, motorists need to be extra cautious. The following tips may be helpful if you have to face a light or heavy rainstorm on the KwaDukuza roads According to Arrive Alive the following must be taken into consideration: • Use the two- second rule to maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you; • If it is raining and the roads are wet, slow down. Take your foot off the accelerator and let your speed drop gradually. Never use the brakes suddenly because this may

Page 13

cause the car to skid; • If you find that an oncoming vehicle is overtaking from the opposite direction and will not be likely to do it safely, slow down and be prepared to move to the left shoulder if necessary; • Beware of oil patches. Don't panic. Do not jam on your brakes, just steer through. In most cases, the patches will be small; • Always change to a lower gear before you take a bend, especially a sharp bend. Your speed should be at its slowest as you enter the bend and both your hands should be on the steering wheel. This slow in/fast out technique gives you most control when driving around a

bend; • Increase your space cushion by doubling your normal following distance from two seconds to four seconds; • Turn on your headlights; • Be careful of other vehicles to the rear and in blind spot areas as they are especially difficult to see through rain-spattered windows; • Use your low-beam headlights to see and be seen. Wait a short time after the rain begins before using your windshield wipers because the blades may smear and • Be extra careful during the first half hour after rain begins. Grime and oil on the road surface mix with water to make the road slippery.

Amatikulu Primary receives corporate help By Xpress Reporter

A brand new assembly area as well as a play area for Grade "R" learners valued at over R120 000 was recently handed over to Amatikulu Primary School by Tongaat Hullett Sugar at an official ceremony hosted by the school. This follows a massive R200 000 sponsorship by the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Sports and Recreation Department in 2012 of a combi-court for

netball, volleyball and basketball. The fully fledged assembly area with podium was officially handed over to the principal of the school by the Director of Tongaat-Hulett Sugar, Deon Van Den Berg and General Manager of Amatikulu Sugar Mill, Muzi Ninela. Van Den Berg highlighted the importance of education for a better life for all and

encouraged learners to come to school daily as well as to take charge of their lives by getting the most out of the education they are receiving from their educators. Muzi Ninela said: “As you all know, education is the number one priority of the national government and every effort must be made to take full advantage of the opportunities that are being made available to you so that

you can help end the cycle of poverty being experienced by your families.” The ward manager of Eshowe, Ms MD Sitole, thanked Tongaat-Hulett Sugar for their magnanimous gesture, on behalf of the Department of Education (DoE). “It is abundantl y clear that Tongaat-

Hulett Sugar is living up to their corporate social responsibility by supporting rural institutions to uplift education. The department of Education acknowledges this generous gesture and applauds you for your excellent work in improving the lot of our

underprivileged children,” she said. Kevin Dhaver, Chairman of the school governing body, was thankful to TongaatHulett Sugar for supporting the school and acknowledged the KZN Department of Sports and Recreation.

iLembe schools dominate provincial chess tournament By Xpress Reporter The Umhlali Preparatory School, Melville Primary and New Guelderland Primary have done the iLembe District Municipality proud at the provincial top schools tournament that was held at the Durban UKZN Old Mutual Centre recently. In the under-13 girls division and under-13 mixed division Umhlali won gold medals granting them passage to represent KwaZuluNatal in the national tournament to be held in Bloemfontein in December. Umhlali girls are the defending National champions. Mrs Russell was proud of her teams and their coaches Mrs Murugen and Spha Nkosi. In the under-15 mixed division

People must invest in their Children It is incomprehensible that we are expecting the government to invest in our children. After all it is the people that are responsible for having children not the govt. Discipline starts at home where children are taught the basics of life and cannot learn this at school. The parents are and should be responsible for their children doing their homework and bringing them up to have manners and teaching them what is right or wrong at an early stage of their lives The concept of giving women a grant for having children is absurd, as all we are encouraging is a nation of prostitutes! Worse it

Pinetown (2nd) and uThungulu (1st). Phiwe Phakathi, their coach, was very proud of his teams' performance. Speaking on behalf of iLembe schools' chess, Gwamanda (Chairperson) thanked the parents, educators and principals of chess playing schools, Thillo from KwaDukuza Municipality, Ms Marimuthoo of North Coast primary and Stanger Secondary

is costing South Africa a fortune having this program and I am led to believe that the U.N. warned us not to carry out this program as we can ill afford it! This also at a time when most other developing nations are practicing stringiest birth control viz. China, India, S. American countries. Some women are looking at this merely as a livelihood and have more children than they would normally have. As if we do not have enough mouths to feed and worse at a later stage there will be no jobs for them! Worse still some idiot made law that if she has a child from the same father the grant reduces substantially whereas from another father the grant remains the same. This encourages the girls to have different fathers in order to receive a higher grant. This is worse than any idiot could come up with so no wonder the govt. has to invest in children as we have systematically destroyed any hope of family life. This grant for children should be stopped without further ado!! South Africa can NOT afford this ridiculous program! It is time for our country to be practical and

By Xpress Reporter Matric learners across the country are burning the midnight oil and have geared up for the final examinations. Stress is inevitable during this crucial period and learners are reminded that it is necessary to practice healthy study habits. Here are 5 steps that will help you cope: • Think Positive A positive mind is a cherished asset at any given point in time. If you think positive, you will never fear exams as you are confident of giving your best. A positive thinker is not stressed even in the most challenging situations. Keep a positive approach. It will help you in tackling exam stress. • Get Proper Sleep Getting proper sleep is important, especially during exams, for maintaining good retention power. No matter how much you study, if you don't sleep well, you will struggle to remember even half of what you have studied. Good sleep rejuvenates your mind and reduces stress levels. • Avoid Distractions Learners tend to get distracted easily. During exams, it is essential to not let yourself be distracted by anything Losing focus will make you feel more anxious, since your attention is being diverted. Prioritize well and leave everything else for later, because right now, exams should be occupying your total attention. • Eat Well Maintain a balanced and nutritious diet during your exams. Have fresh fruits and all the requisite nutrients to retain the sharpness of your brain and perform better in the exams. Half the battle against stress is already won provided you eat well. • Work consistently While it is more than important to have a positive outlook, it needs to be remembered that only a hard worker can have optimistic thinking. Hard work fosters self-belief and liberates you from stressful thinking. It is natural to feel strained during exams. However, a hard worker is convinced of a good performance and therefore, feels less stressed as compared to others. We at Xpress Times take this opportunity of wishing all matriculants good luck in their studies and every success in their examinations

MESSAGE TO MATRICULANTS “YOUR ATTITUDES DETERMINE YOUR ALTITUDE” All praise is due to GOD ALMIGHTY who has blessed man with the infinite capacity to learn and may His choicest salutation continue to descend upon our Master who's live personified true commitment and dedication. We are fast approaching the days where our matric learners sit for their final examinations. Matric is undoubtedly an important milestone which serves as the harbinger of all their future educational pursuits. The days leading up to the exams are often fraught with extreme levels of stress and anxiety. Matric exams are probably the most crucial and vital examinations that you will ever write since they eventually determine your lifelong career options. It is therefore vital to manage this stress by turning to GOD ALMIGHTY and begging for His mercy and guidance. Remember: “Desire is the key to motivation, but it's determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek.” Therefore regard the coming examinations as an opportunity to test your commitment and drive. “An ounce of performance is worth pounds of promises” It is now time for action, determination and execution. No problem in life can withstand the assault of continued learning and sustained prayer. Parents and siblings also need to play their role by ensuring that the home environment is condusive to study. The success of your examinations is dependent on effective time management, smart studying techniques, a balanced diet and regular exercise. As you approach the examination phase, it is worth reflecting on the nature of life itself. Life is but a voyage of tests and tribulations which we need to face with courage and determination. We are continually faced with making tough decisions and choices. It is not difficult to make the right choice if you know what your values are! Stay committed to your values but remain flexible in your approach. “There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with examination. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die is a process of learning.”

MATRICS 2013 MESSAGE This week, thousands of young South Africans will be sitting for the final examination ultimately ending 12 years of primary and secondary education and seeking to open doors of higher learning education. The iLembe District Municipality council, led by His Worship the Mayor, Cllr. SW Mdabe would like to convey their sincerest well wishes to the Matric Class of 2013 in their upcoming examinations. Matric is undoubtedly an important milestone which serves as the prelude of all future educational pursuits. The days leading up to the exams are often fraught with extreme levels of stress and anxiety. Matric exams are probably the most crucial and vital examinations that you will ever write since they eventually determine your lifelong career options. During this time, it is important to as always, stay focused, manage your time effectively, have smart studying techniques and to keep an active and healthy lifestyle. Parents and siblings of matriculants also need to play their role by ensuring that the home environment is condusive to study. iLembe District Municipality's matric pass rate for last year was an impressive 70,31% and this was a massive achievement for the district following the 2011 pass rate of 65,66%. We hope that these results will inspire and encourage this year's matriculants to do just as well, if not better. Our district is largely made up of rural areas and as government we recognise and applaud learners who overcome challenges and unfavourable living conditions and continue to record impressive and life changing results. A total of 7 schools achieved a 100% matric pass rate last year. A remarkable achievement for any school but even more so for public schools serving medium to low income groups. As government, we continue to be committed in our view of positioning education as one of the leading priorities for the future. We hope the iLembe Matric Class of 2013 will do us proud and will showcase just how ready they are to take the district, the province and the whole country forward.

The nature and spectacle of Diwali

The darlings of Hilltop would like to wish all those celebrating Diwali a blessed and joyous occasion

Diwali is a 5 day festival (in India), celebrated to mark the triumph of good over evil. It is observed each year at some point during mid-October to mid-November in many countries such as India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Nepal, or where there are large Indian communities living such as in South Africa, Canada, Britain, and New Zealand. In South Africa Hindus celebrate Deepavali / Diwali on Sunday, 3 November 2013. Just as Christians regard Christmas as a special and important holiday, Diwali is a festival that has as much meaning for Hindus. Aside from Hinduism, other religions that celebrate this festival are Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Whatever your faith, you can join in the festivity that is "The Festival of Lights". Please note the following: • The thirteenth day from Poornima (Full Moon) (Dhanatrayodashi or Dhanteras). This is the first day of Diwali. "Dhan" means "wealth" and teras means thirteenth day. This is the day for celebrating the goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth. For some places in India, the lamps are kept burning for Lord Yamaraj, the God of Death; • The fourteenth day (Chhoti Diwali or Narak chaturdashi). Hindus believe that this is the day that Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur, freeing the world from fear. Firecrackers are often let off from this day; • The new moon day (Diwali / Lakshmi puja) of the dark fortnight of Ashvin. This is the actual day of Diwali, and the most significant day. If the house has not already been cleaned, it must be done early this day to welcome the Goddess Lakshmi. Gifts and sweets are exchanged on this day to strengthen bonds of love between family and friends. Firecrackers are let off after dinner. • The first day of the bright fortnight of Kartik (Padiwa or Goverdhan puja). This is the day that Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Parvat to protect the Gokul people from Indra's wrath and King Vikramaditya was crowned. • The fifth and final day of the Diwali Festival (Bhai Dooj / Bhaiya Dooj). On the final day of Diwali, brothers and sisters renew sibling love, with sisters applying the sacred red tilak on the forehead of their brothers and praying for their long life, while brothers bless their sisters and provide gifts of love. Diwali or Deepavali in South Africa takes on special significance on the day when Hindu families go shopping, burn clay lamps, wear new clothes and jewellery, bake sweets; snacks and savouries (all vegetarian), decorating homes with traditional motifs of Rangoli designs. The day is always remembered for the Lakshmi pooja and is capped off by lighting of firecrackers and fireworks.

On Diwali, the goddess Laxmi, a symbol of prosperity, is worshipped for peace and happiness. Gifts and sweetmeats are shared followed by the lighting of firecrackers. Hindus must maintain their rich legacy and cultural identity. This festival underpins the ideals of caring, sharing and understanding. Diwali celebrations transcend the barriers of race, gender, creed, socio-economic factors and status. An African proverb says: “The sun of yesterday may have set, but its light will enlighten our future days.” On behalf of the Shree Hanuman Temple Group we wish all Hindus a blessed Diwali. Use fireworks with extra care. Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday, 27 October 2013 at 19 Rose Road, Stanger Manor. Kindly accept this as a personal invitation. Diwali is the most popular of all Hindu festivals. Swami Sivananda once said Diwali has come and gone but the hearts of many people are as dark as the night of the new moon. How true people are racing for material accomplishment and ignoring spiritual development which is the ultimate purpose of every Hindu in God-realisation. Let us adjust and make meaningful contributions to the upliftment of society. Diwali marks the victory of good over evil. Deepavali means an array of lights and signifies the victory of brightness over darkness. It is through the light that the beauty of this world is revealed and experienced. To Hindus darkness represents ignorance and light is a metaphor for knowledge. The lighting of diyas (clay lamps) symbolizes the destruction of evil forces, wickedness, violence, anger, injustice, oppression and suffering. The lighting of lamps also in a way helps us to pay obeisance to God for the attainment of good health, wealth, knowledge and peace. Diwali is celebrated for many different reasons but the best known to all Hindus is that it marks the return of Lord Rama,

Christmas Country Fair to benefit local charities By Xpress Reporter

The North Coast fundraising organization, the Christmas Fair Fund, will be hosting this year's Christmas Country Fair at the

Collisheen Estate in Ballito on Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 November at 9am to 5pm on both days. According to Sandy Smith all funds raised, in this 61st fair, will be distributed to

local charities and says that this promises to be an even more enjoyable experience than in the past. “Over 80 stallholders from all over KwaZulu-Natal will be selling their unique and

mostly handcrafted merchandise, providing the ideal opportunity for some early Christmas shopping. Apart from the outstanding Christmas cakes and puddings that the Christmas Fair Fund members are famous for, there will be décor items, ceramics, jewellery,

clothing, gifts, toys, Christmas decorations and much, much more on offer,” she said. She added that a supervised children's play area will give moms the freedom to get down to some serious shopping while 'the little ones are cared for and entertained.' A new access road will be available via the Orchid House at Collisheen Estate that will lead to ample

parking, relieving the traffic congestion experienced in the past. A map of the stalls layout will be handed out at the entrance. A harvest table lunch will also be available at R50 per head. For more information, please contact Sue Rowland on 079 6963782. Entrance tickets which includes tea or coffee and generous eats will be sold at R40 per person and will be on sale at the entrance.

BABA ZAIN I USED MAGIC RING TO PAY MY DEBTS

The sheriff’s department and debt collectors have been harassing me for three years due to debts that have been lingering with me. Other events have happened including the department cutting off my electricity, cutting my telephone line and eventually my water supply was cut off. My son who was an alcoholic and was not employed. My sons depression led him to taking drugs. This was getting too much and in the end i ended up borrowing money from my friends because the banks did not want to loan me money because I was unemployed. As a pensioner I relied on the small income I got but was not enough also. Things got worse when some of my friends wanted their money back. One day I got home I see the local community paper in my post box. The first thing that captured my attention was a testimony by a women who had been saved from her debts by a Godly man called Baba Zain. I could not believe this and for a few hours I thought if I should consult Baba Zain. When I called him first thing that he had said that he knows I am in debt and should not stress. I felt relieved after that I decided to see Zain the following morning when I booked my appointment. During our consultation the man gave me a Magic Ring and told me that things were going to get better and that I would be able to get through my debts. Eventually after sometime I am debt free with Baba Zain miraculous help and his Magic Ring. I assisted my son to also get a good job at Toyota. This have been better for my family and we are growing stronger thanks to Baba Zain.
