Major victory for KDM
Unions unhappy
KwaDukuza Municipality's biggest debtor, Ballito Bay Mall, has finally settled its outstanding rates and service charges account with KDM. In November last year, KDM obtained a Court Order directing the liquidators of Ballito Bay Mall to pay all outstanding dues within 7 days of the municipality supplying a statement of account. The municipality, through its attorneys, Asmal & Asmal of KwaDukuza, supplied the
On Thursday last week, SADTU in KwaDukuza region staged a mass meeting in KwaDukuza Town Hall to accentuate on the boiling issue of government refusing to meet the demands put on the table by trade unions. In the meeting, SADTU pleaded for unity among its members and assured the crowd that they are working tirelessly to persuade the government to put a better offer on the table. Meanwhile, SADTU in KwaZulu Natal is saddened by the alleged failure of the department to pay normal stipends to Grade R practitioners which was due on 30th April. “This is nothing else but a

symptom of a collapsing department of education. Not just Grade R practitioners but to all workers in education, the department cannot blame schools because we are aware that our principals signed and submitted the documents for renewal of contracts on time. SADTU is busy enhancing the programme to confront the employer and we have already spoken to them demanding that they must show to be responsible and pay with immediate effect. Our call is for them to make sure that employees get their monies this coming Thursday,” said a statement issued by SADTU KwaZulu Natal provincial committee.

In the last couple of weeks, a number of robberies involving train commuters have been reported to KwaDukuza SAPS. According to KwaDukuza SAPS, rail users who use the Gledhow Station and Charlottedale Station find themselves being victims of criminals. “A number of people who get off at Gledhow Station and walk to Thembeni area have been victimised by criminals in the last of couple of weeks, people using the railway bridge from Gledhow to Thembeni need to walk in groups as the robbers use the railway line as their new targeted area of operation because it is far

Also refrain from carrying cash or expensive valuables. SAPS has a plan in place to try and help but try not to be an easy target,” said K w a D u k u z a S A P S spokesperson, Sibusiso Khuzwayo. “I plead to our people to report such incidents, we are also working tirelessly to apprehend these culprits.” Recently, a train commuter was robbed of his belongings, luckily he did not sustain major injuries.

When approached for comment, a senior official said that they were ecstatic about the payment and stated that all debtors of the municipality would be pursued vigorously.

These negotiations began almost eight months ago and public sector unions state that they want them concluded immediately. The ultimatum came after government facilitators at the talks unsuccessfully requested a postponement to May 3. A new wage agreement should have been concluded by the end of March. Labour unions are demanding wage increases of between 10% and 12%. The employer has offered CPI plus 1.5% to 0.5% for the highest-paid workers.

An annual event organised by a skill development company known as Carathom Training went the extra mile in this year's event as they invited elderly people from ward 9 in Groutville to a Freedom Day Lunch. Carathom Training is a company that specialises in skill development. Speaking on behalf of Carathom Training, Miss Nokuthula Goge stated that it is the nation's duty to take care of its elderly and as Carathom Training, they are delighted that the event was a success. “When we started this
journey of giving back to the community it was not an easy road but I'm glad we are moving forward with the old generation. I would like to pass my gratitude to Luvern Naidoo from Sasko Bakery in Shakaskraal for his generous sponsorship,” said Goge. Guest speaker Cllr P. Dube who delivered a key note speech in the event, eloquently stated that this nation owes elderly people an unpayable debt. “This event is a constant reminder of the role played by senior citizens during the struggle for liberation of this country. As a young
generation we are thankful to you for sacrificing so much during the apartheid period,” said Dube. She added that the wisdom old people possess needs to be passed down to the young generation. The Freedom Day Lunch was also graced by SASSA representative Mr King who enlightened pensioners on the rules and regulations they need to understand about SASSA and pension funds in general. He also engaged with the old generation in terms of obstacles they face especially when they are applying for pension.

Councillor Ntokozo Mbatha of ward 12, Thembeni organised a 2-day sporting event for the upcoming generation in commemoration of Freedom Day last week. The event was held at Thembeni Sports Ground, and aimed to enrich the lives of young people in the area. Speaking to the Xpress Times, Councillor Mbatha said that they marked this day to wrestle the problem of high rate of drug abuse in the area, especially by the youth. At the event, Mbatha encouraged young people to
use all resources at their disposal to educate themselves and better their lives. “In our area we have a problem of young people associating themselves with drugs but I strongly believe that there is still hope to overcome this issue through having events such as this one where young people participate,” said Mbatha. He expressed his gratitude to all who made the event possible. “I would be a miss if I did not acknowledge the role played by our very own businessman, Mr S Mthembu for Steel Engineering and KwaDukuza Municipality
who sponsored us with sports kits for soccer and netball,” he said. Mbatha was thrilled by the turnout of young people who attended the event, “I congratulate all the participants and I assure our young generation that there will be more events similar to this one in the near future. Lastly I would like to urge everyone to participate in these kinds of events.” The two winners of the fun run each walked away with a DSTV. Junior FC were crowned soccer champions in ward 12, Thembeni after pulling a jaw dropping performance in the final.
Nation Builders youth visit children's centre
HELPING HAND: Seen is the Nation Builders Youth Team together with Mrs E Ndlovu (extreme left) and the children of Senzokuhke Children Centre
The Nation Builders youth team were involved in an outreach effort on Saturday, 7 April 2018 as they worked together to prepare a meal for the children of the Senzokuhke Children Centre in La Mercy. The Senzokuhke Children Centre, a Non-Profit Organisation established in 1997, cares for approximately 30 orphans by Granny E Ndlovu. Nation Builders youth started off their Saturday morning preparing a sumptuous meal to treat the children of the Senzokukhe Children Centre. Zion Sewraj (Grade
7 learner at Umhlali Preparatory School) and Jordan Hughes (Grade 9 learner at ML Sultan Secondary School) shared with the children the importance of education. Granny E Ndlovu, the caregiver to the children at the centre, thanked the Nation Builders team for spending their time with the children and for the meal that was prepared. Nation Builders appeals to local businesses and the public to assist Senzokuhke Children Centre who receive no funding and depend solely on daily and weekly sponsors
from the public and business. Some of the needs they have include: Food and beverages - Canned goods, a fridge, microwave, repairs to the facility roofs which are currently leaking, the establishment of new showers and toilets. Should you wish to assist the Children's Centre please contact Mrs E Ndlovu on 082 704 8215. If you would like to partner with Nation Builders in future events please contact Leann Peters on 083 540 8456 or nationbuilderssa @gmail.com
The PSL championship race is over and Sundowns have been crowned king for season 2017-18 after they defeated Ajax Cape Town on Saturday in Atteridgeville. This is their third title and their second in three years to demonstrate that they have taken over from Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates as the darlings of SA soccer. It also means that they will be in the Champions League (CAF) next year. Pirates will be runners-up with Chiefs and Maritzburg United fighting for third place. In Spain, Barcelona claimed their 25th La Lige title on Sunday with 4 matches left to play, leaving behind perennial rivals Real Madrid by 12 points. Mo Salah was unanimously chosen as the Footballer of the Year in the EPL. He had a phenomenal season, outscoring strikers like Harry Kane and Kun Aguero and leading Liverpool to the semifinals of the Champions League. His team is on the verge of reaching the final, going into the second leg with a lead of 5-2 against Roma away. In the other semi-final, Real Madrid plays Bayern Munich at home leading 2-1. It will be a dream final if Liverpool and Real face each other, but in football there's many a slip between cup and lip ! The SA Government held its annual Awards ceremony over the weekend. Hashim Amla was conferred with the Order of Ikhamanga for his contribution to cricket in particular and to South Africans and humanity in general. This is a prestigious award and has far-reaching implications. He is expected to lead by example in the community and ensure that the development of cricket in the outlying areas of KZN especially is sustained. It's no use concentrating on the greater Durban areas only as there is plenty of potential elsewhere. Not everyone will be able to get to ex-Model C or private schools to exploit his/her potential. Our public schools also have pupils with talent and they must be "discovered". Remember, the voyages of discovery in the
past centuries and the travels of David Livingstone and others through Africa did not come about by chance. They were planned and executed and the discoveries were by chance ! So let's hope that these awards will drive the recipients to make an impact on their respective communities for a positive outcome. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday in Baku was exciting as well as "chaotic". Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) emerged victorious from Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) and Sergio Perez (Force India) who gained their first podium finish in years. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari), the pole leader, finished 4th after being overtaken by Valtteri Botas (Mercedes) a few laps from the finish. But misfortune struck when his car suffered a puncture while leading and looking to be a comfortable winner. Vettel lost crucial seconds when he locked his brakes and was overtaken by the first three. But earlier in the race, team mates Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) collided into each other while holding favourable positions and it resulted in their retirement. Surely the team bosses have given them instructions in respect of not taking each other out while racing competitively. It led to the team losing a number of crucial points which will become important as the season draws to a close. It's early days and Red Bull management will have to call in their drivers to sort out this "problem" before it becomes detrimental to the team's fortunes. Hamilton (70) now leads the drivers' table by 5 points from Vettel with Raikkonen (48) third. In the teams' standings, Ferrari (114) leads Mercedes by 4 points. The next race will be the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona in a fortnight's time. The Blitzbokke came 4th in the Sevens rugby competition at Singapore over the weekend and it leaves them lying second in the series to Fiji who were eventual winners. SA lost to Fiji in the semi-final and to England in
Jayce Singh is a former sports administrator and Patron of the KZNCU
the play-off for third place. It's a period of re-building for the Blitzbokke as a number of experienced players have switched to playing the 15man version and have been replaced by younger players who are still finding their feet in this format of the game. There will be a break for a month until the next tournament commences in England in June. The last word. Cricket South Africa (CSA) released its international calendar last week for the next season prior to the World Cup of 2019. Many tests, ODIs and T20s will be played here and abroad against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Australia and Pakistan. It will be a busy schedule that will keep our players very occupied between July 2018 and March next year. But as far as spectatorship is concerned, we from KZN seem to be short-changed. Our first and only international at Kingsmead against Pakistan, an ODI, will be on 22 January 2019 while venues in Gauteng and the Western Cape will have the bulk of the matches. The first Test match will be against Sri Lanka in February and an ODI in March. The question is did the KZNCU do enough to obtain more "glamorous" fixtures against Pakistan who have many supporters in this part of the country ? Surely we cannot be satisfied with the explanation that we do not attract enough support for test cricket. What is the Union doing to address this "problem" ? We have to market our venue as an attractive place to watch test cricket. Reduce our prices if necessary; sell group tickets; invite schools to attend; get the affiliates of the Union to assist in the marketing. Kingsmead cannot afford to lose its test status as one of the main venues to host fixtures against the A-list opponents !

TVGB jubilant after capturing the Xpress Times Easter tournament
The Xpress Times Easter Volleyball tournament (hosted by K w a D u k u z a Vo l l e y b a l l Association), postponed on several occasions due to heavy rain, produced a thrilling climax when it ended last Thursday at the volleyball courts at Stanger High. Although the final was played under sub-standard lighting and playing surface, it attracted a huge vociferous spectatorship that sends a clear message to the powers to be that volleyball attracts the largest viewership of males, females and children in KwaDukuza. Both finalists, newcomers, TVGB (formerly Warriors) and Darnall United, 2017 reigning champions, produced a thrill-aminute volleyball that did not

The lead changed on several occasions with no team outdoing the other. It was a typical case of what you do, I do better. At 24-24, the set could have gone either way. The best could be seen as both teams held their nerves looking for the 2 clear point victory until 2929.
