MEC applauds government as Covid-19 cases decrease in iLembe

Contact Purdy Maharaj or Thokozani Mnguni on 032 5522167 for news on the latest happenings in your area

SEPTEMBER SPECIAL STANGER

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Peggy Nkonyeni, said the decrease in Covid-19 infections in iLembe District was testimony to the government's effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Nkonyeni and Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu conducted an oversight visit to the General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Hospital to hand over 113 isolation beds worth R24 million. Mbulelo

Baloyi, the Department of Public Works spokesperson, said the facility was finished in record time as construction started two months ago. Baloyi said it was pleasing to note the decline of confirmed infections in the district. He said when lockdown started, they anticipated over 30000 deaths by October, adding that the situation in iLembe had stabilised and interventions had paid off. “We embarked on a number of campaigns and public education over the past months. I think that helped because

we are now seeing numbers going down, including fatalities. “At some point, the district was under pressure as it was second in the province, but the quick intervention helped,” he said. “Since the infection has been decreasing in the past weeks, the hospital facilities are not going to become white elephants. They are still going to be used because they are within hospitals and will help not to burden the public health facilities.” iLembe district is currently number five in the province with 5617 confirmed positive cases. The neighbouring eThekwini district is leading the province with 51790 confirmed cases followed by uMgungundlovu district with 14720 cases. King Cetshwayo has 8956 cases and Amajuba has 6290. A few months into the lockdown, iLembe district leadership came under fire as the district was second with Covid-19 infections and unions and staff blamed the district leadership. This led to the closure of the General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Hospital after it reported a high number of infections among health-care workers. The workers also embarked on a protest, demanding personal protective equipment and the removal of the hospital management. “We managed to intervene and resolved the issues facing the hospital and the district,” said Baloyi. -IOL

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has announced 121 more Covid-19 related deaths and 1985 new infections on Monday night. This takes South Africa's Covid-19 death toll to 14 149, and infections to over 627 041. South Africa has the sixth most Covid-19 infections in the world, behind only the USA, Brazil, India and Russia. Peru recently overtook South Africa to become the country with the fifth most infections in the world. Although the number of new infections has slowed considerably, as has the rate of testing in the past week, daily deaths are also starting to slow, although they are still over 100 per day. The Department of Health said it had now tested almost 3.7 million people in the private and public sector, with over 18 800 tests conducted in the past 24 hours. South Africa's coronavirus death toll now stands at 14 149. Of the latest 121 deaths, Mkhize said the most deaths came from the Western Cape, Limpopo, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and the Free State provinces.

KDM clamps down on illegal connections

On 28 August 2020 the KwaDukuza Municipality amplified its fight against illegal electricity connections which are milking the public purse on one hand and are a safety hazard on the other hand. According to KDM Media Liaison Officer Sipho Mkhize the morning's operation in Ward 04 came to the municipality by means of a tipoff from concerned community members who were seeing landlords tampering with electricity so that they don't have to pay for it, whilst running businesses. This was done at the expense of a thriving community who work hard to make ends meet. The community, therefore, felt that it was not fair on their part, that they have to

buy electricity whilst landlords were generating an income “for free” by tampering with services. Speaking at the inspection in-loco of these defaulting rental properties the Municipal Manager, Mr Nhlanhla Mdakane, gave a stern warning to those involved in stealing municipal services and asked communities to continue to speak against such tendencies and behaviour so that the municipality can act and by doing so protect the interests of those paying for t h e i r s e r v i c e s . The Municipal Manager also said these disconnections have the full backing of the KwaDukuza Municipal Council which is also not happy that there are paying individuals whilst others are stealing. Ayurvedic Full Body “The community of Massage KwaDukuza at large is warned that should they be found to be stealing Health & Wellness Centre electricity, we will be GIFT VOUCHERS AVAILABLE disconnecting their Swedana Head, Neck homes from the grid and Ayurvedic & Shoulder Massage as well as confiscate Steam Box municipal or illegally sourced assets TEL: 032 551 6554 CELL: 063 668 8256 connecting them to the Sangeetha Moodley B.Pharm/DAPT (Ayurveda) grid,” said Mdakane. 133 Mahatma Gandhi Street Suite 3. PANDITH : GURU BRAMHA

KwaDukuza Mall recently held an exciting spend and win competition which received over 10 000 entries and was drawn live on Facebook on the 1st August 2020 by Vivian Reddy. The grand prize was for 2 lucky winners to have a go at a trolley dash at Checkers and Pick n Pay to the value of R5000 each.

Excitement was in the air as Mbali Dube and Jeremiah Ndhlovu spent 60 seconds in an attempt to fill as many items as they could in their trolleys. In the end, the lucky winners walked away with over R7000 worth of goods. A cheerful Jeremiah said that his wife will be pleased with the

microwave oven he has just won. Mbali said that she, who is a student, will be putting her appliances to good use. KwaDukuza Mall will be embarking on more exciting competitions so keep posted on social media platforms for details on the next lucky draw.

Zero2Five trust, Southern lodestar Foundation and Spar COVID-19 Food Relief: 1000 kg of nutritious A-Plus porridge donated to communities around Stanger

KZN based NPO Zero2Five Trust serves around 250 000 highly nutritious meals every month at Early Childhood (ECD) Development Centres and Primary Schools in KZN and the Eastern Cape. “It has been over four months since the schools and with that, the ECDCs in South Africa closed their doors,” says Julika Falconer, Zero2Five CEO. “These centres, commonly known as “crèches”, offer vital nutrition and early learning programmes for South Africa's children.” The Centres fall under the Department of Social Development and need to adhere to the guidelines stipulated in the Standard Operating Procedures issued by the Department of Social Development on 23 June 2020. Their main income is based on school fees, ranging between R 50 and R 400 monthly, depending

in Hilton in August which is distributed through a fruitful partnership with the SPAR Group. 'We have always taken an active interest in assisting the Stanger and surrounding communities”, says Sunny Somduth, Manager of Stanger SUPERSPAR. At this challenging time in particular, we are delighted to partner with Zero2Five trust and Southern Loderstar Foundation in this initiative for the distribution of the 1000 bags of breakfast porridge to Mbalenhle Preschool in the Asheville / Glendale area. It will serve the children enrolled at the ECD Centre and particularly food insecure families in the near surroundings for a few months to come.”

on the area and age of the child. Many centres are operating with not more than 60% of parents able to pay such fees and the last month any fees have been paid was March. It comes without saying that current finances in the widely informal ECD Sector do not allow the purchase of the long PPE list and much needed food items to ensure the children are returning to a safe environment and much needed nutrition. Zero2Five Trust has been supporting several Ilembe communities since 2008 and has delivered fresh and dry food items into the wider Stanger area every Monday during the lockdown period. The NPO was offered the opportunity to supply areas of need with the nutritious A-Plus porridge from Millhouse

Cleopus Sokhulu from Dorinkop is devastated and needs all the help he can get. This comes after his room he was renting out in Newtown burnt down on 25 August 2020. According to Sokhulu, he was at work when the incident occurred. “It was business as usual at work, then I received a call from my neighbour alerting me about the fire. He came to pick me, drove straight to the fire station. Upon our arrival in Newtown the fire was raging, all belongings were burned beyond recognition,” said Sokhulu. “I don't want money, I'd be grateful to people of KwaDukuza if they can assist me with food, clothes and blankets to fight off this cold. I managed to find a place to stay. Those willing to assist can call me on 0837664941 or 0732829978,” he said.
