The Department of Justice will have to share its success rate on prosecutions and the Department of Transport as well on drunk driving charges and plans on roadblocks. Four injured after house caves in

The recent rains caused a house to collapse in Monkey Town. Luckily the family was rescued by neighbours with minor injuries and cleared by the Stanger Hospital. Currently the family of Vusi Khumulo is living in a container in Shakaville with her two children aged 5 and 10 years. There are at least another 5 houses that are on the brink of collapse, some of them are also living in the container. Temporary structures need to be constructed so that the families can move back and lead a normal life. To this extent KDM has to provide financial assistance. An appeal is made to the community for clothing, materials and any form of help since the family has lost everything. Cllr. Madhun Sobram Sing Ward 17

Taxi crash leaves woman paralyzed

Passengers travelling in a taxi in the Happy Valley area on Wednesday 15 February 2017 sustained injuries when the vehicle allegedly overturned. One of the passengers sustained

critical injuries, including broken ribs, a punctured spleen and severe spinal injuries that left her paralyzed. It is alleged by bystanders that the taxi involved in the accident

was towed away before the SAPS arrived. Witnesses allege that an unroadworthy vehicle is the cause of the crash, and believe that there should be a probe into the incident.

Fruitful job summit for Mandeni Youth

LEADERSHIP: From (L-R) Cllr Thobani Shandu, Municipal Speaker Cllr Makhosazana Zungu, Mandeni Mayor Cllr Sphesihle Zulu, Cllr Zamile Mdletshe and Cllr Mjabuliseni Ngubane.

By Xpress Reporter

Mandeni municipality hosted a fruitful Youth Jobs Summit and career expo at Sibusisiwe Hall from 22 to 24 February 2017. The three days summit kicked off with a workshop where young people were introduced to various platforms where they can obtain and utilize their skills at. The aim of this summit was to enable the municipality to be able to create more job opportunities for the youth and the people of Mandeni while providing democratic and accountable government for local communities. As part of the day's proceedings, there was a gala dinner where renowned media personality Venessa Marawa

facilitated the programme hosting influential guest speakers such as Mandeni Municipality Mayor, Cllr. S Zulu, Regional Accounts manager at Vuma FM, Ms. Patricia Malemia and acting CEO of Enterprise iLembe, Ms. Thuthu Ngcobo who all shed light about how to make it in life and in the cooperate world. On the 23rd, summit attendees were tutored on how small businesses can work with the municipality through tenders and what skills individuals need to have in order to work for the municipality. “Human Resources and Public Relations are good courses, they are easy to do and they guarantee that you will be a graduate. However, those are not scarce skills that

the municipality needs. Do not be afraid of doing tough courses because those are the ones we need and they are the ones that pay well. We need town planners, welders and engineers” said Mrs. P Luswazi who works as an IDP manager at Mandeni Municipality. Mayor of Mandeni Municipality, Cllr. Sphesihle Zulu said 2017 is the year of success as they are equipped to oversee all municipal processes. “We will meet fire with fire, as the council we have decided to hold this session because we know that issues of the youth are sectoral and segmented, after this event we want a program of action which is going to be informed by what is being discussed here, you should

manage to deal with issues of our young people in schools, existing matriculants, you should also be able to address issues of young people who are drop-outs, there are some who have entered higher levels of education, but have not completed their diplomas and degrees therefore we should come up with programs to address those issues. For us to know the proposed solution we need to make this platform, the platform of robust dialogue” said Zulu. In the concept document for this summit, the municipality cited that it has made a steady progress in delivering on its mandate as guided by the constitution, however highlighted that it is not immune from the triple challenges that the country is faced with which are, high levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality. This initiative was warmly received by young people in Mandeni. One of the young people, Gugu Maseko thanked the municipality for offering such a platform to them. “We have learnt a lot from this summit and we would like to thank the municipality. It's not every day where you get people telling you about new opportunities and ways in which you can benefit from them” said Gugu.

Zilungisele residents: “We don't want to be violent” By Xpress Reporter

Ward 9 residents in Zilungisele area, KwaDukuza yearn for answers from iLembe municipality after four weeks without water. Community members through their representative who came to our offices said their water pump problem has been reported several times and in one instance in January it was fixed, however a few days later the water pump failed again. There is an aura of confusion and disgust among the residents in that area, despite that the residents insisted that they do not want to be violent or take to the streets. “We don't want to be violent, but we at times feel like it's the only way we

might be heard. If there is a problem with our pump or maybe they replaced the other one with an old one as well they must just tell us. They should not just leave us hanging like this” said the representative before adding that all their attempts to get someone within iLembe municipality who can help them have so far failed. “We have tried all that we can, they just do not want to help us” further commented the Zilungisele dweller. Furthermore, the residents complain that one of the truck drivers who deliver water into the area refuses to fill up all their containers saying that residents must buy tanks if they want water. “He refuses to fill up and it's

sad because nobody has even addressed properly about this matter. We discovered on our own that we have a water problem” concluded the irate residents. ILembe Municipality requested that the concerned citizen send his account number or physical address however the request was met with a refusal. “They want to scrutinize me now; they must go fix the water pump not me. There is nothing wrong with my meter or anything else. The problem is the water pump. That's where they should go, because even now (28 February 2017) we don't have water.

constantly call the police and I never get any solid answers regarding this murder. This is sad and it makes me to believe that I am being used as a scape goat and someone is probably trying to cover their tracks by using me as a suspect. How can I kill someone I have been with for 18 years?” asked Gugu. KwaDukuza SAPS media liaison officer, Johannes Khoza said that in such instances it is advisable to contact the detective in charge of the case. “She must contact the detective who is in charge of this case. She must take the case number to him so that they can let her know about the status of the case. If that doesn't satisfy her, she has to take the matter further to the head of detectives” said Khoza.

Protests of “Anti-Semitism” Occasionally A Manifestation of White Privilege? Human rights activists and academics such as myself are increasingly being accused of anti-Semitism when we speak in support of the Palestinian struggle and the international BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel) campaign. Last year organizers of my BDS speaking tour at French universities came under immense pressure to cancel. The Israeli lobbyists failed. For the last few weeks I have faced a relentless onslaught in the German media without any right to reply. The accusations include the really galling claim that BDS SA, an organization on whose Board I serve, has called for the killing of Jews. Locally, in an unprecedented attack by the Israeli ambassador and Embassy of Israel, the governing party of our country, the ANC, was accused of anti-Semitism, for its support of the Palestinian people and the ANC's discouraging of visits to Israel. These accusations, some which are part of a multimillion dollar Israeli government-funded operation, are orchestrated to narrow the parameters of what is possible and even permissible to say in support of the Palestinians in their struggle for justice. The logic of this effort is quite simple; controversialize support for the Palestinians to such an extent that one silences it. I do not for a moment believe that those Israeli lobbyists who make these deceitful claims of anti-

Semitism take them seriously. Instead, this lobby r e c o g n i z e s t h e usefulnessness of this tool

human character trait or quality good or bad can be attributed to a particular race or ethnic group and the

Muslim immigrants. While in Muslim societies antiJewishness never reached the barbaric levels that it did in

for quashing dissent. Unfortunately, like the infamous Nazi murderer and propagandist, Joseph Goebbels, they believe that if you tell a lie often enough, people will begin to believe it. For example, neither I nor anyone on the staff or board of BDS SA has ever made any statement that could be reasonably remotely interpreted as anti-Semitism. Throughout my life I have consistently opposed all forms of racism. By “racism,” I mean both racial prejudice and the way that it is silently employed by power; the idea that any

tendency by those in power to exploit these ideas. In fact, the very idea of particular races with specific essences is a scientific absurdity; it is unadulterated BS. Racism can take various forms and to the extent that many Jews (and others) view themselves as a race, antiJewishness can also be described as racism. This form of racism has been a particularly deep-rooted and insidious evil for much of European Christendom's history. Sadly, below the surface, anti-Jewishness is still alive and well in Europe. And here I am speaking of “Old Europe,” not the Europe of recent mostly

Glenhills Primary bids farewell to staff member

Glenhills Primary School bid farewell to caretaker, Mr Mpofana, who retired after working at the school for 18 years. Mpofana, who is affectionately known as “Peter” at Glenhills Primary, certainly left an indelible mark in the hearts of staff and learners. Principal, Mr H Hurilal expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt speech. “I just want to say thank you. You always listened, you always had something constructive to say and you always offered support and encouragement with an unflagging spirit,” he said. Seen is Mr Hurilal (left) presenting Mr “Peter” Mpofana with a token of appreciation

Europe where it culminated in the murder of approximately 6 million Jews, a number of Muslim societies were - and in many cases, are - also guilty of antiJewish discrimination. As a Muslim, I have expressed my remorse and anger at this, have regularly condemned it as an activist and have examined it as an academic. About ten years ago, I also spearheaded a campaign against Muslim anti-Semitism. When a people any people ascribes particular human characteristics or responsibilities as peculiar to themselves because of their “blood lines” or skin pigmentation, be they Afrikaners of Apartheid SA, Jews who support the current politically constructed Israel as a divinely chosen state, then these are also forms of racism. Assigning specific social roles or expectations to people based on the idea of blood lines is also racism. Examples of these are: “White people are created to care for black people,” “East Asians are a 'modelminority,'” “All white people are devils,” “The Irish are dumb,” or “Jews are the chosen people.” The horrors of the Nazi Holocaust, as is the case with all other human disasters, were uniquely horrendous. However, to elevate one form of racism in this case antiSemitism to a class of its own, with a special place in hell reserved for antiSemites, is actually another manifestation of white privilege. It is also about Europe projecting its peculiar anxieties and the consequences of its unique crimes against the Jewish people, on the whole world. Those who are genuinely concerned about anti-

Semitism as an extension of their opposition to all forms of racism, must guard against elevating this form of racism as a crime worse than others. This is particularly pertinent when in their daily lives in today's world, Jews do not experience discrimination along the lines that, say, black people throughout the world including, African Americans, do. If you step out of your own little communal bubble for just a moment then you will notice that currently in South Africa, levels of Islamophobia and, even more so, racism against Black African people are far higher than antiSemitism. In other places, particular Europe, it is e v e n w o r s e . All forms of racism matter and each must be evaluated for the effect it has on a people at a particular point in history. Some Jews are desperately trying to make the current State of Israel synonymous with Jewish identity and to make this notion a rigid form of orthodoxy. For them, to criticize the State of Israel means to criticize all Jews. They have “synonymized” the two (Jews and the State). Many others, including some orthodox religious Jews and Jews who did/do not support Israel such as the late Joe Slovo and Ruth First, Denis Goldberg and Ronnie Kasrils and increasingly younger Jews, reject this synonymization. This synonymization would be akin to ISIS saying that anyone who does not buy into their particular form of Islam is a heretic or an Islamophobe who hates Muslims. To buy into this logic (Judaism/Jews = The State of Israel, Islam/Muslims = ISIS) is to exclude the many Jews who do not agree with the State of Israel (either the idea of a Jewish state, that the Israeli State can commit no wrong, or that its wrongs may not be criticized in public). This is not to to deny or to detract from the deep spiritual affinity and that Jews have had throughout the ages with land of Israel, more specifically the city of Jerusalem. My focus here is a political and ideological creation - the current and modern State of Israel (as opposed to the Bibilical Land of Israel). In the same way that I would not wish to conflict Muslim attachment with the cities of Mecca and Medina with the modern political and ideological creation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Israel and political Zionism is one mechanism which

some Jews in the world today see as the surest guarantee of the survival of the Jewish people. Some would argue that it is “the only way to survive”. Even if one accepts this false premise and many do not it is a peculiarly White European phenomenon to force another people, the indigenous Palestinians, to pay a steep price in lives, dignity and land - for that notion of “survival” of a foreign people. (And I use 'foreign' as it is used in English not in a nonscientific senses that people with religious convictions may view it. I may be a devout Catholic, but I am still a foreigner in the Vatican.) Israeli supporters - many of whom have been atheists are happy to conflate this political project with the Biblical idea of God's promise to the Jewish people; the concept of the Promised Land. But there is nothing biblical or holy to apartheid and colonization as South Africans can attest (Some White Afrikaners also claimed that this land, which today we all share, was promised to them and them only at the expense of the indigenous peoples). There are many contestations regarding whose God promised what. We need to guard against God being reduced a real estate agent. When dealing with other communities, the only common language that we have however flawed is international law, human rights and dialogical ethics ethics based on conversation between persons rather than on conversations with one's God. BDS is an international non-violent and civic campaign to hold Israel accountable for its numerous human rights violations against the Palestinians with nothing to do with the beliefs undergirding the long and insidious record of European ant-Semitism. To equate it to Nazism's “don't buy from the Jews” is at best naive and at worst downright deceitful. It is as absurd as comparing the Nazi boycott in the Forties of Jewish goods (a holy discriminatory, racist unfair and unjust boycott) with Europe's boycott against Apartheid South Africa during the seventies and eighties. It is also to once again elevate White people and their experience however tragic above all other tragedies. Professor Farid Esack is a Board Member of BDS South Africa and teaches in the Department of Religion Studies at the University of Johannesburg. The article was originally published in the Sunday Independent.

Warriors demolish Dawnheights

Warriors elated after victory over Dawnheights

In a T20 league match played at the Umhlali Preparotory School grounds on Saturday 25 February, Warriors Sport squared up against Dawnheights. Dawnheights won the toss and elected to bat first on a well prepared wicket. However, Warriors went straight into the bowling attack, with Amin Gallie claiming two wickets in the first over for just 6 runs. Dawnheights managed to steady the ship for the next few overs until Ashveer Balchand claimed the wicket of skipper Suveer Maharaj in the sixth over with the tally on 35.From then on it was the Warriors way with some

tight bowling and claiming wickets at regular intervals. Dawnheights ended their innings on a low 73/8 with only opener Wasim Suleman scoring double digit figures of 25 which included four 4's. Amin Galli claimed 3/26, Sikander Ally 2/7 off 2 overs, Ashveer Balchand 2/8 off 2 overs and Rishen Mathapershad 1/26 off 4 overs. Justin Govender took 3 breathtaking catches. Warriors skipper Riaz Mahomed went straight into the batting attack smashing 3 fours all over the park before he was caught for 13 runs in the third over. Man of the match Justin

Govender stepped in and continued the onslaught before he was bowled out for 34 (including four 4's) in the 9th over with the innings total at 51. Opener Sandile Mazibuko was distraught when he was given out LBW with the scores leveled in the 12th over and his personal score on 14. Amin Galli insisted on stepping up the order to finish the innings. He did that in style with a massive six off the first ball giving Warriors victory by 7 wickets in the 12th over scoring 79 runs. Wasim Suleman claimed 2/9 off 2 overs and Salman Mohammed 1/20 off his 4 over spell.

Morningside U16 destroy Dawnheights Morningside under 16 proved to be too strong for the Dawnheights team in an under 16 match played at Country Club this past Saturday. Morningside were asked to bat first, a decision that would quickly backfire on the Dawnheights' team. Morningside openers Dillon Subrayen and Suveer Dewlall batted brilliantly with an opening stand of 67. Dillon batted well for his 43 runs until he was clean bowled by the opposition captain Wasim Suliman. Dillon hit 3 fours in his innings. Treval Thirrumgum came in at 3 and he hit a quick-fire 20 before he was stumped of the bowling of Justin. Next to the wicket was Sheldon Maduray. He joined Suveer at the wicket and the pair batted well together taking

the team total past 120 runs until Suveer was clean bowled in the 18th over for a well-played 41 runs. Sheldon was not out for 22 and the Morningside boys posted an imposing 142 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Dawnheights got off to a terrible start in their run chase losing opener Arveer in the second over when he was caught of Sheldon's bowling. Dawnheights never got their innings going losing wickets at regular intervals. 9 runs later Dlamini fell victim to a Godil lbw for 13 in the 8th over. Railways were in the game before Nadasen was joined by I. at 5.6 to the over, Railways got off to the worst possible start as opener V. Naidoo was trapped by S. Sadayan lbw of the 3rd ball. In the very next over Naidoo's partner T. Pillay was caught at slip by I. Mahomed of the bowling of C. Shange for duck. D. Mather was next to fall for duck in the 3rd over, caught by Logenathan and bowled by Sadayan. Veterans, Sadayan and Shange were finding the right areas as Railways found scoring very difficult. With inclement weather on its way the next 4 wickets fell for 65 before the skies opened. Railways 79/7 after 30.2 overs were well behind the run rate before umpires decided to call the game off. Sadayan impressed with 2/2 from 6 and Logenathan 2/4 in 3 overs stood out for iLembe. iLembe won by a better run rate.
