MEC Hlomuka welcomes KDM bolsters local economic development sentences for cable thieves In a bid to retain and attract new investors, KwaDukuza Municipality has developed a Draft Strategic Transportation Master Plan for the Ballito to Sheffield node. According to KwaDukuza Municipality this masterplan is set to provide adequate road infrastructure to support the development in the Ballito Area and surroundings that will enable KwaDukuza to adapt to the economic, social and environmental landscape and position itself to achieve the 2030 vision. On Friday 26 February 2021 during virtual p u b l i c

participation session, KDM Deputy Mayor and Chairperson of EDP Portfolio Committee, Cllr. Lucky Makhathini said the Ballito to Sheffield Transportation Masterplan is important as it will assist in not only improving access to the area by building roads but will facilitate accessibility that will attract new residents and businesses ultimately helping economic development, “The KwaDukuza region is one of the busiest regions in the country in terms of building activities. This reflects in Statistics South Africa reports that highlight that in the past 10 years, the

municipality has approved building plans to the value of R20billion. The areas where the bulk of these building activities are currently manifesting are the Ballito to Sheffield node. In order to ensure that the municipality continues to retain and attract more of such investment, it is important to ensure that such developments are supported by the requisite infrastructure, and importantly, the planning for the future growth of the area,” said the deputy Mayor. Makhathini further stated that the municipality is not spearheading the plan alone, but in partnership with some developers in the private sector who have acknowledged the importance of transportation planning, and as such has provided seed funding to support not only their developments but also the economic development of the area,” added Makhathini. Developers and stakeholders were part of the virtual engagement where the Draft of Strategic Transportation Master Plan was presented.

CABLE: MEC Hlomuka welcomes the hefty sentences for cable thieves.

KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Sipho Hlomuka has noted and welcomed the landmark, precedent-setting judgement handed down by the High Court in Cape Town which has sentenced five copper thieves to a collective 1250 years in jail. The crimes they had committed between 2016 and 2018 include the theft of copper wires worth R1.8-million from Eskom and Telkom. Hlomuka said that this judgement will serve as a strong deterrent to those who continue to pillage private and public infrastructure,

“This landmark judgement sends a clear message that the stripping of public and private infrastructure will not be tolerated and that those who dare inflict this form of economic sabotage on our society will face the possibility of lengthy sentences as their actions are tantamount to treason and an act against the state,” said Hlomuka. KZN COGTA said municipalities across the province continue to suffer millions of rand in damages every year as a result of cable theft, acts of sabotage and vandalism. Hlomuka further appealed to the

municipalities across the province to work closely with their respective municipalities and the law enforcement agencies to report any suspicions they might have in connection with cable theft, “he fight against vandalism of public infrastructure is one that government cannot win on its own. We therefore appeal to our communities to play their part in safeguarding our essential infrastructure. Those who live near such infrastructure must take a stand and be vigilant by working with the police to bring perpetrators to account," added Hlomuka.

South Africa moved to level 1 lockdown with immediate effect on Sunday after emerging from second wave of Covid-19, this was announced by President Ramaphosa on Sunday night. Under Alert Level 1, the curfew will be relaxed, more types of gatherings are permitted, and alcohol can be sold according to normal hours. Ramaphosa said that the Cabinet had taken the decision to ease restrictions in this manner because evidence shows that South

SA moves to lockdown level 1 Africa has “now emerged from the second wave” of the Covid-19 pandemic. The president cited the fall in both hospital admissions and infection numbers as proof that there has been a “dramatic decline in [Covid19] cases over the past eight weeks, “South Africa's scientists and researchers have made an important contribution to the global

knowledge of the virus,” said Ramaphosa. Alcohol sales both for on and off site consumption, will be permitted during normal pre-lockdown trading hours, providing that this is outside the curfew hours. The land borders that have been closed during the lockdown will

remain so, and only five airports will be open for international flights. Ramaphosa warned that the wearing of masks remains compulsory. South Africa on Saturday received the second consignment of 80 000 Johnson & Johnson vaccines, and to date around 67 000

frontline healthcare workers have already been vaccinated. However, at least 40 million people will need to be vaccinated before South Africa can hope to achieve herd immunity. The government has secured 11 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and 20 million doses

Press of the Pfizer vaccine and is in the process of securing 12 million vaccine doses from Covax, Ramaphosa said. According to Professor Ian Sanne, while both the Pfizer and the Johnson & Johnson vaccines have been found to be effective against the dominant variant of Covid19 in SA, the logistics involved in storage and transportation of the two varies drastically.

Steep fuel increase in March

TEL/FAX: 032 552 1753

EMAIL: zms@telkomsa.net

2020 NSC PERFORMANCE Once again ZMS has performed meritoriously. Management and Staff are pleased with the results, more especially considering that 2020 was a very difficult academic year with many challenges presented by the unforeseen pandemic. The uncertainty during the course of 2020 was quite worrying, but, thankfully, the year was eventually successfully concluded, Thirty nine candidates were resulted and thirty eight of them passed, giving the School a 97,4% Pass Rate. ZMS achieved 2nd Position in the Kwa Dukuza Circuit. Candidates obtained 57 Subject distinctions and 57 Level 6 symbols. The Top 3 candidates are: Humza Moosaji is the top ZMS candidate Afrikaans FAL 88%; Mathematics 83%; Life Orientation 96%; Accounting 96%; Life Sciences 95%; Physical Sciences and English HL 79%. He wants to pursue a career in Information Technology. Saudah Bellim obtained 5 Distinctions and 2 Subjects at Level 6. Saudah wants to study B. Com at a Tertiary Institution.

FUEL: Big jump in fuel prices.

South African motorist have to dig deeper into their pockets today as the fuel price goes up, The price of petrol will increase by 66cents per litre. Diesel will go by 57cents per litre and the price of paraffin will rise a little. According to the Automobile Association (AA) the latest price hike is due to the increased economic activity, the demand

for oil has become subsequently high due to the covid-19 vaccine being rolled out globally. Layton Beard from the AA said , “We can also not forget that South African fuel prices will already be on the back foot going into April because of the addition of 26 cents per litre to the general fuel and Road Accident Fund levies, placing further strain on already

battered South African consumers,” said Beard “Although the rand is doing well against the dollar it's not good enough to stop the rise in oil prices,” added Beard. The association also noted that in eight weeks there has being no signs of ceiling yet.

Azraa Khan also achieved 5 Distinctions and 2 Subjects at Level 6. She wants to study Engineering at UKZN. Management and Staff wish all the 2020 NSC Candidates everything of the very best in their further studies. May they all achieve the successes that they desire. It is also hoped that the 2021 School Year will proceed without much disruption.

She said 2020 was a difficult year due to Covid19 pandemic but the support from her family and teachers made everything easy, “I am filled with so much excitement and so much joy that I passed matric with distinctions and I am so eager for the future. 2020 was a challenging year not just for me but for everyone; for being able to achieve results that I can look back and be proud of makes me over the moon,” cited Ayanda Dube. “I attribute my achievement to hard work and the support from my parents and Stanger Secondary teachers,” added Ayanda Dube. In conclusion Ayanda Junior Dube urged matric 2021 to study hard from the beginning of the year and never lose sight of their dreams. School Principal Mr H. Naidoo highly praised Ayanda Dube for passing with flying colours. Naidoo said Ayanda worked

The office of care and support at the school said it's overjoyed by the incredible achievement of Patricia Xhengo from Shayamoya, a matric learner who obtained a bachelor pass. According to E.G Sibiya from the office of care and support at the school, Xhengo found it difficult to focus on school due to lack of school necessities and financial constrains at home. In 2020 when she Established 1931 was doing her matric, Patricia had opted to will be observing the annual leave school but the school intervened and gave her the emotional support, material and educational support that she needed, “At home she lived with her father and other siblings, when we noticed that she was missing school days, we got involved and engaged with her parent and found her a rental house that is nearby the school. As the office we would donate food parcels to her and other necessities needed by a learner,” said Gugu Sibiya. With the support from the school Patricia started doing well and working hard on her school work. Gugu Sibiya further added that the school is thrilled with the results achieved by one of their own and will work hard to encourage other learners not give up on school, “As the school we are happy with the results and we wish her and all others matriculants well on their future endeavours,” PLEASE NOTE added Sibiya. Proteas women arrive in India as they prepare for 'unknown' conditions

Proteas women all-rounder and captain, Sune Luus

Proteas women captain Sune Luus believes South Africa will be stepping into the unknown during their tour to India this month. Hilton Moreeng and his squad arrived in the sub-continent over the weekend to play India in five ODI's and three T20's in a bio-secure bubble. The Proteas women are currently in quarantine for a period of six days, which will be followed by two days training ahead of the first ODI on Sunday at the Ekana Stadium. “Coming to India is always exciting. We're never sure what to expect when we get here,” said Luus. “For this trip, we've never played at the ground; we don't know what it is like or what the conditions will be like. I think it will be the same for India as well. So I think it's going be an even contest.” Luus will captain the team once again due to the absence of the injured Dane van Niekerk. Van Niekerk joins

all-rounder Chloe Tryon and Masabata Klaas, who sustained an “eleventh-hour injury” will miss out on their Indian tour. The Proteas women last toured India in 2019 when they lost the ODI series 3-0 and fell to a 3-1 defeat during the T20 leg of the trip. “It's always tough in India and it's definitely going to be tough again,” Luus stated. “We have five ODI's and three T20's with a quick turnaround between games, which in itself is tough. The opponents are very competitive players. They have players like Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur and all those players, who we know are top quality. But I think we are well-prepared to face them. We've also had game-time behind us and I don't think they've had that, which I'm hoping will be an advantage for us. Obviously we are in India so we're expecting quite a bit of spin, but luckily we are well-prepare for that. The girls are just so excited and ready to execute their plans and play to the best of their abilities.” Regarding the gametime, Luus was referring to the recent home series against Pakistan that was played within the BSE in Durban. The Proteas come off a successful home series against Pakistan last month, winning the ODI and T20 series comfortably, which will bode well, according to the captain.
