The KZN Department of Education has announced the cancellation of the tender to supply food to more 5000 schools ion KwaZulu-Natal.
This follows an outcry over nondelivery of food to many schools, resulting in learners going hungry. The Department days it has reengaged the existing suppliers who have the mandate to procure and supply food to cluster schools.
Early last week, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal had instructed the KZN Department of Education to immediately cancel the new, problemprone contract to supply food to the province's schools. The party revealed this when it briefed the media on Thursday last week, where it vowed that by yesterday (Tuesday), all schools in the province should have adequate food to maintain the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP).
Speaking at the media briefing, ANC Provincial Secretary Bheki Mtolo said there has been a collective acknowledgment of the serious problems facing the programme, since the start of the 2nd term of schooling. Mtolo added that the ruling party, after reviewing various submissions and relevant facts, has come to a conclusion that there “are serious breaches resulting in the nullity of the NSNP contract”, and has consequently directed DoE to take immediate remedial action which result in all schools in the province receiving an adequate supply of food.
“We are firm in our position that the more than R2.1 billion allocated for NSNP must be used to drive entrepreneurship revolution and stimulate local economic development. Therefore a more district or local wide food distribution model be explored as a matter of urgency to ensure that all learners in schools are supplied with food.
“We have received reports of SMMEs that are forced to travel hundreds of kilometres to collect food for schools. Some have to hire trailers and bakkies. This has become a burden given rising fuel prices. To cater for these SMMEs the Provincial Government must urgently enter into a memorandum of understanding with Ithala where it will guarantee the support of these SMMEs so that they do not struggle with cash flow challenges.
“This will also give Ithala the best opportunity to prove itself as the institution of economic transformation for ordinary entrepreneurs in our society.

“The ANC is directing its government to make sure that by Tuesday 2nd May 2023 every school in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal has enough food for the whole month of May 2023. Provincial Treasury must come closer to the Supply Chain Management processes as the custodian of the Public Finance Management Act. “All contracts associated with NSNP should pass the scrupulous test of value for money through a fair and transparent competitive process, Mtolo stated.
The flat has 4 aircons which can be purchased by the tenant, if necessary.
Also available for sale in the flat are the ffg:Dishwasher, Washing machine, Tumble Dryer, large gas stove and 2 large king size beds.

The party also dwelled on the need for government contracts to benefit emerging entrepreneurs in the Districts where they are located.
“Our position as the ANC in KZN is that the provincial budget across all government departments must be used to create more jobs and stimulate entrepreneurship at local level. This will ensure the redistribution of wealth and social stability.
“We are therefore directing the ANC government in this province to ensure the removal of the red tape in public procurement for the benefit of small players,” Mtolo said.
