Disgruntled ANC members trash KwaDukuza By Thokozani Mnguni
O
PROTEST: A large number of ANC members in General Gizenga Mpanza Region barricaded Kwa Dukuza streets on Wednesday 26 June 2019 which resulted to the closure of both Kwa Dukuza and ILembe District Municipality.

According to deputy chairperson of the Kwa Dukuza Sub-region, Mthembeni Zuma, who was among those at the forefront during this march ANC members held several engagements with the provincial executive committee prior to the 2019 General Election to resolve the issue of Musa Zondi's chair, but they were told that their grievances will be Continued on Page 7

The newly appointed KwaZulu Natal Premier Hon. Sihle Zikalala delivered his first State of the province address on Friday 28 June 2019 KwaZulu-Natal legislature. Zikalala singled out that the rising unemployment rate remains a big concern and it must be eradicated if the province wants to prosper. Currently South Africa has 6.2 million unemployed people between the ages of 15 and 64, Zikalala outlined government's plan to combat unemployment and other social ills, “Unemployment for South African youth has reached crisis levels with more than half of them unemployed. According to Stats SA, South Africa's unemployment rate increased from 27.1 % to 27.6% in the first quarterof2019.The expanded unemployment rate which includes discouraged work seekers is even higher at 38%. expanded unemployment rate is 42.4%. The middle class is struggling to make ends meet. People are defaulting on repayments on their home loans, personal loans, credit cards, and even on school or university fees for their children. The unbearable cost of living is even felt more severely by the working class and the rural poor. Domestic workers are losing work or asked to work fewer days as their own employers are trying to save every cent with the rising cost of living,” said Zikalala Touching on the upliftment of ordinary citizens Zikalala urged local government work together and prioritise service delivery. We reiterate our commitment to make the local government work better and bring the people to the centre of our programmes for service delivery. The local government
sphere has to remain the centre of popular democratic participation in the delivery of services to all our people. We undertake to ensure that we change the manner in which councillors do their work, as representatives elected by the people. Despite challenges in some municipalities, we want to thank all those councillors that have worked very hard to earn the respect of the constituencies that elected them,” added Zikalala As part of attempts to eradicate or minimise crime in the province Zikalala said government has put certain measures in place to fight crime and ensuring social stability. Crime pose a great threat to society with Gender based violence being at the top, Zikalala cited he will focus on the reduction of serious crimes against vulnerable groups such as women and children, “This
will be driven by publicity campaigns to address crimes against women and children which will be driven by the roll-out of the Crimes Against Women and Children Strategy as well as the Anti-rape Strategy. In particular, t h e s e p r o g r a m m e s mustconscientize boy children on gender-based violence and also campaign against the granting of bail; and support the imposition of stricter bail conditions and harsher PREMIERE: KwaZulu Natal Premiere Sihle Zikalala delivered State of the sentences for crimes against women province address on Friday at and children, said Zikalala KwaZulu Natal Legislature. KwaDukuza Municipality has re-opened its offices after were shut down due to political protests which erupted in KwaDukuza last week. Yesterday KDM announced the re-open of its offices and apologised to the community at large who were affected by the closure of offices which affected service delivery, KwaDukuza Municipality Media Liaison Officer Sipho Mkhize said everything is back to normal “The KwaDukuza Municipality wishes to inform its residents and
stakeholder community at large that all its offices in the KwaDukuza CBD are now open and are fully operational following unrest that was experienced since last week Wednesday, 26 June 2019. The Community Services Business Unit, entrusted with amongst others refuse removal and maintenance of parks and gardens, is hard at work to clean the town and collect refuse. It is expected that this activity will be completed this week,” said Mkhize “We also wish to cast away all
malevolent avowals made, suggesting and influencing for a rates boycott. The closure of the municipality was not an easy decision to take; however, in the interest of the safety of staff and patrons, it is a decision that had to be made. We want to assure all ratepayers that our teams will be working around the clock to bring the situation to its normality. We wish to thank all stakeholders who were involved in the finding of an amicable solution to this unrest,” added Mkhize ILembe District Municipal offices are also operational.

ANC weighs in on recent political unrest in KwaDukuza By Xpress Reporter
KDM and IDM were forced to shutdown on Wednesday 26 June 2019, due to ANC members protesting against their leaders' decision to lift the suspension of the regional secretary, a convicted killer. At the moment the situation is back to normal in the CBD, the African National Congress in the region has voiced its opinion regarding the protest, “The ANC Region would like to assure members of the public and businesses in KwaDukuza that the situation is now back to normal following the flaring up of demonstrations on Wednesday, 26th of June as ANC members sought the intervention of Provincial leadership on some pressing issues affecting the region. On Monday the 01st of July, the ANC KZN PEC delegation led by its Chairperson Cde Sihle Zikalala visited KwaDukuza to meet with the RWC, Sub-regional leadership and ANC Councillors. This meeting was for the PEC to be
clarified upon the issues that led to the mass action. After hearing the reports from both the RWC and KwaDukuza Sub-regional leaders, provincial Chairperson resolved by asking the branches to give the PEC another day for them to come and answer to all the grievances raised by the branches that were waiting outside for him to address them of which he later did. Zikalala promised the branches that as the ANC Provincial leadership, they will be coming to meet with them on Sunday, 07 July to answer to all the issues raised and that they will marry the old issues with the new ones. Some of the issues raised by the branches included the 2 set of letters that they sent to the ANC Provincial Secretary asking for an early Conference to fill some vacancies in REC officials positions and the situation around the reinstatement of the Regional Secretary that has been posted recently on Facebook by other ANC members including those who sit in the PWC before this
can be communicated to the branches which are the basic unit of the organisation,” said the statement released by the ANC in the region. “Further, as the ANC we again re-affirm our stance that there is no way in which the adverse effects incurred during Mandeni Shutdown, Maphumulo protest march and KwaDukuza demonstrations can ever be condoned. The ANC acknowledges the disruption of services and life owing to the closure of municipalities, departments and other institutions as well as the resultant damages is noted and as a responsible organisation sworn to serve the people will always strive towards the amicable and timely solving of those. We are a movement of the people and thus remains deeply committed to the enhancing their lives through constantly interrogating and resolving every contradiction that manifests at various phases of the revolution,” added the statement.

Winter fair 2019 a huge success Anglo workshop a success The famous Winter Fair for 2019 was a huge success as a large number of KwaDukuza citizens went to Stanger High Grounds to enjoy rides, delicious food and other activities. This annual event
was organised by KwaDukuza Child Welfare Society, the event concluded on Sunday night with a huge turnout, KwaDukuza Child Welfare took to social media to thank KwaDukuza
community, Sponsors, KDM and volunteers for the continuous support, according to Mrs K. Govender the whole event went very well.
PARTICIPANTS: Educators with their certificates
RIDES: KwaDukuza community enjoyed variety of rides at the winter fair 2019.
STALLS: Winter Fair 2019 added new stalls in this year's edition
FAMILY: Family members enjoying the rides at the Winter Fair 2019
The final Anglo workshop concluded successfully on 12 June 2019 at the KwaDukuza Resource Centre. The provincial coordinator of the Eskom Young Scientist Expo, Nalini Dookie, visited the Centre and motivated educators and learners to participate in the upcoming Eskom Young Scientist Expo which is taking place on the 5-6 August at the Durban University of Technology. Participation at the Expo opens up a whole new world for both learners and educators. While learners get to participate in the competition's educators get to serve as judges. Dr Roy
Rambrij emphasized that more educators must engage themselves in Maths, Science and Technology workshops to improve learning content, to enjoy teaching and to contribute in the fourth industrial revolution because this is how educators are influenced to be innovative. Dr Roy Rambrij also announced that the District in partnership with Sappi KwaDukuza Resource Centre and Eskom Young Scientist Expo will be hosting a Science Day at Stanger High on the 29 of July and selected schools that participated in the Sappi KwaDukuza Resource
Centre MST projects will be invited to participate. The management of Resource Centre complimented the Department of Education Officials, participating schools and educators that displayed hard work during the workshops on April & May. Many educators mentored at the Sappi KwaDukuza Resource Centre have excelled in competitions bringing honour and glory to their schools and the District. The function concluded with certificates being presented to educators and facilitators for hours attended for Maths, Science and Technology.

KwaDukuza held ransom KwaDukuza has been held ransom due to political infighting within the ANC. Although as the DA we do not like to meddle with the politics of other political parties this prolonged protest is affecting service delivery and has slowed down the economic activities of our town. For how long must we wait for ANC leadership Provincial /National to intervene in resolving issues that is now fought on the streets of KwaDukuza. Refuse is uncollected for a week every corner it's an eyesore including our wards. Our town and wards are filthy. If the situation is not contained and brought to normality it could lead to outbreak of diseases. Council meetings have been adjourned indefinitely. KwaDukuza and ILembe municipalities that provide essential services have been shut down. We call upon the authorities to step in! Or is this a scenario we as law abiding citizens have to get accustomed to. The community cannot endure any more intimidation all we need is the return of peace is our small town. The loss to our town could run into millions while our economy is contracting not a good sign job creation. It's almost a week enough is enough! Cllr Madhun Sobram Sing - Ward 17
ALJAMAH Political Party The ALJAMAH POLITICAL PARTY is concerned about the ongoing strike that is presently taking place in Kwa Dukuza. We therefore appeal to COGTA and the MEC for safety and security to intervene and resolve the matter as soon as possible. The strike action as effected service delivery and all government and municipal offices are closed this is a
worrying situation for our citizens in Kwa Dukuza. This as directly affected the economics of KwaDukuza and the surrounding areas that is under our jurisdiction. The town is littered and rubbish concrete bins are strewn across the middle of the roads in town vehicles are being burnt due to this unruly behaviour of a few elements that are holding our town to ransom. Aljamah is concerned about the safety of its citizens. The sooner the better if COGTA can get an urgent meeting with all stake holders in the ruling party to end the strike in an amicable manner so that services and governance is restored. I await your reply. AK DAWOOD - COUNCILLOR
Water interruption in Mandeni The community of Mandeni had to bear the brunt of not having water for 3 days due to a strike that is taking place in ward 5. Residents of ward 3, who are the main contributors of rates that help the municipality function are up in arms about this politically aligned strike. This community has residents that are on dialysis every second day, some of them are disabled. There is also a hospice within this ward that depends on water as a basic human need for the patients. A few of the above have been admitted to hospital due to infection setting in. This should not be taken lightly. The water purification plant is in ward 5. According to information received the above ward requested a bridge and roads be built years back. This has not materialized. This proposition was forwarded to the Dept. Of Transport.

The responsible individuals should address this on the proper platform with the relevant authorities concerned instead of sabotaging infrastructure. This has resulted in a high political instability in this ward, thus disadvantaging people that are not liable for this failure in proper communication guidelines and governance. There are more losses to this. Isithebe industries will be closed down due to this water strike. Millions of rands will be lost. Economy will be affected. Workers will be without jobs. Families will be effected. One cannot afford this mayhem and political disaster created by a few. The ILembe management and team did a sterling job in coming to the rescue of the residents of Mandeni. South Africa is a beautiful country. We are a rainbow nation with intelligent people. Would it be so difficult to sit around a table and find solutions rather than destroy and cause further harm to our economy? Let's unite and create a conductive environment for all to live in. 1SA4ALL CLLR K NAIDOO - MANDENI

BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE The past weekend saw this columnist coming face to face at a 90th birthday party of an octogenarian who is also getting close to his ninety. Thoplan Parsuramen of Clares CC, Mayville CU, Asherville CU, Natal Indians, South African Indians and Natal Cricket Board is still going strong and reminisced about his days playing against Stanger's Royals, Commercials and Schools Cricket Clubs as well as against Stanger CU. He remembers vividly his duels against Dr Bhorat, Jugoo Govender, Dawood Asmal, Harold Samuel, Chota Kolia, Cassim Saib, Chota Omarjee and Essop Suleman. He, himself, was a legend in his own right. Rising from humble beginnings, he rose to become arguably Natal's greatest spinner (left-arm orthodox and chinaman) who dominated interrace tournaments at provincial and national levels. He reached his pinnacle when he was selected for SA Indians in 1958. He narrowly missed selection for the SACBOC team that toured Kenya and East Africa in 195758. He was a prolific wicket-taker at all levels of competition and dominated at inter-provincial tournaments as Natal's leading bowler. He was also a hard-hitting lower-order batsman and an excellent fielder in the point/gully region (a la Jonty Rhodes). He was born in the barracks directly opposite the Kingsmead cricket ground, the then mecca of White cricket in Durban. It is here that he honed his skills by bowling to Dennis Dyer who played for Natal and South Africa in the 1940s and 50s and others. He could do this because his father was an employee of the Durban Corporation to maintain Kingsmead. `Here he bowled for hours to these batsmen many of whom were baffled by his wrong one, the chinaman. He recalled how he would wait outside while Dyer showered and then collected his few shillings for his afternoon's work. This pocket money was welcomed given the pittance that
his father earned. He also worked as a scorer over the Jayce Singh is a former weekends at this sports administrator and g r o u n d f o r Patron of the KZNCU which he was paid seven shillings and six pence (75 cents) per day. It is so ironic that a venue, which was like a second home to him, was denied to him and other Blacks owing to apartheid's racist laws. Cricketers were only admitted to this venue after 1991 upon SA's re-admission to the ICC. Parsoo, as he was affectionately known to both young and old, continued to play league cricket until 1982 (49 years old) when he hung up his boots. Today, his time is spent watching cricket on TV and making the occasional visit to the Presidential Suite at Kingsmead where he has a permanent invitation by virtue of the fact that he captained the NCB team in the 1966 Dadabhai Tournament played in Durban. May this legend of non-racial cricket continue to enjoy good health so that he can reminisce about the game in his twilight years. Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.
