Ratepayers’ and Civic organisation unifies community By Xpress Reporter

The Interim KwaDukuza Civic and Ratepayers' Association (KCRA) held a meeting on Wednesday at the Town Hall which was supposed to be the planned launch. However the public in attendance felt that the interim committee needed to have more depth and structure. The interim chairperson, Haroon Mahomedy, cleared the misconception that the organization was “not made up of Muslim businessman only.” “Another misconception I need to clear is that the businessman of KwaDukuza, at this point have no say on the running of this interim body,” said Mahomedy at the start of the meeting. He went on to say that the interim committee was elected at a public meeting and is to promote the interests of the entire community of KwaDukuza. “By that we mean people that live in KwaDukuza, property owners, residents, householders, and business people as well and that is the purpose of the formation of

PROGRESS: Haroon Mohammedy (left) and Sanele Mthiyane (right) addressing the public in English and isiZulu respectively at the KwaDukuza Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, 24 February

this association,” Mahomedy added. Mahomedy said that all 27 wards would be catered for. At this point, barely 10 minutes into the meeting, hands went up wanting to ask questions.

Sanele Mthiyane from Dokterskop did not agree with the interim committee's plan to having a meeting where the draft constitution “would be tabled to elect” saying that the public did not receive copies of the draft

constitution. At this point the public jeered at the interim committee and cheered at statements made by individuals in the audience. Mthiyane also responded to Mahomedy's question on

how to have representatives from the 27 wards (soon to be 29 wards at local elections) selected to serve on the KCRA. Mthiyane suggested partnering with councilors in calling public meetings in

order to do this and Shain Manjoo (KwaDukuza Retailers Association) said that “a ratepayers' organization is apolitical.” An individual who claimed to be a ratepayer said that she was disappointed with the turnout of some KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) councillors, belonging to the major political parties, getting involved. “During the 15 minute adjournment I found even socalled political activists telling Haroon to adjourn the meeting besides councillors,” she said. In a meeting where the KCRA's legal approach to the proposed regional mall was set to be discussed, a date for a 38 person committee was set for Wednesday, 16 March 2016 after the 15 minute break which ultimately ended the proceedings. After Mahomedy called an end to the meeting, the public were interacting with the interim committee and were all smiles with meet and greets and introductions. They were overheard saying “looking forward to seeing you at the next meeting.”

Budget speech 2016 By Xpress Reporter

The former and current national minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan delivered the much anticipated Budget speech on Wednesday, 24 February 2016. In the light of respected finance minister Nhlanhla Nene axed in favour of the little-known David van Rooyen, then reinstating former minister Pravin Gordhan, the nation saw three ministers in four days. Gordhan sought budget pointers on several specific things: What does government do well? What should we stop doing? How can we achieve inclusive growth? “On what we do well, South Africans have very clear views: Tax administration. And paying social g r a n t s , ” h e s a i d He also said that stopping corruption and waste and bailing out state entities was priority and supporting inclusive growth ie.

support for small business and job opportunities targeting the youth was in the works. Social grant increases will see overall expenditure on social assistance increase from R129 billion this year to R165 billion in 2018/19. The old age, disability and care dependency grants will rise by R80 to R1 500 in April 2016, and by a further R10 to R1 510 in October. The child support grant will rise by R20 to R350 in April and the foster care grant by R30 to R890. Although consumers may have hoped for a miracle from the Budget, the reality was that production growth did not match population growth, he said. “This means that real GDP per capita growth is declining, while very little net job creation can be realistically expected this year. If we add to this rapidly rising food inflation and rising interest rates, the

reality is that many South Africans are feeling recessionary-like conditions.” After hearing that the excise duties on cigarettes would rise from R12.42 for a pack of 20 to R13.24, Khanyisa Weeder, a local bar manager, occasional smoker and drinker, said she would have to quit smoking. Those indulging in spirits are set to pay the most as duties on a litre of hard liquor will rise from R149.23 a litre to R161.47. A proposed date for the enforcement of a “sugar tax” was announced by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan during his Budget speech as he sought to raise additional revenue and at the same time make on impact on public health and social well-being. If passed, a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), or a “sugar tax”, will come into effect on April 1, 2017.

ENCOURAGING: DJ Oskido (front) and KDM Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu (back) engaging with local learners on Thursday, 25 February 2016

Replacement filter units also available

KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu and business owner and performer, Oscar “DJ Oskido” Mdlongwa are calling on all qualifying citizens to participate in the 2016 Local Government Elections. On Thursday, 25 February 2016, during their visit to four local schools, Mthembu and Oskido affirmed their support for the Independent Electoral Commissions (IEC) voter registration drive, encouraging all unregistered learners to dedicate the weekend of 5 - 6 March and 9 - 10 April 2016 to register to vote. Mthembu had earlier implored Oskido to lend a hand in efforts to reduce the number of learners at local high schools without decent school uniforms. “Voting is the most important way to make your voice heard on matters and other issues of concern to you and because we are in a democratic country, your view is important in order for government spheres to provide adequate healthcare services, housing, education, fair taxation, employment, improving amenities, better roads and transport infrastructure,” they said in a joint statement.

Cold comfort A local security official worked tirelessly to recover a friend's deep freezer. According to Mandlenkosi Ngema, he awoke at about 3am and noticed the deep freezer missing from his verandah. The freezer was being stored at his premises by a friend whose house is being renovated. That night, he made extensive enquiries and located the freezer minus the contents at a house in the Shakaville area. M t h o k o s i z i Maphumulo (27) alleges that he was requested by two youths to keep the freezer for them and he did so, unaware of the circumstances. He was granted bail and will be back at court on 15 April.

Keep vigilant and be safe!

Lieutenant Colonel Mathura of the local SAPS has issued the following safety hints in order for community members to ensure their safety: Illegal firearms: among most sought after items in cases of robbery and burglary are firearms. Serial numbers on stolen firearms are erased and the firearms then sold or utilised for crime. Firearm owners must ensure that their firearms are well secured at all times, or physically on their possession in a concealed manner. Carrying of firearms when frequenting liquor premises must be avoided at all costs. Women and children: these

soft targets are still repeatedly victims of contact crime and various forms of abuse. Victims must report abuse to the local SAPS who will assist in opening of criminal cases and obtaining of protection orders which are two effective means of breaking the cycle of abuse and domestic violence which generally take place indoors, out of sight. Human trafficking: parents must be vigilant concerning movement and whereabouts of their children. The trend of sending young children alone to the shop is disturbing, especially after dark. Kidnappers and sex offenders prowl on these innocent,

soft and helpless targets. Registered informers: an increased informer network is vital in the fight against crime. Community members are generally aware of criminals and crime in their neighbourhood and can offer valuable information confidentially to the local SAPS. An appeal is once more made for community members to enroll as registered informers. Payment is made for positive information. Avoid becoming a victim of crime: always be vigilant and don't leave yourself vulnerable. Be around people and avoid lonely, isolated areas. Remember that criminals strike suddenly and

without warning. Your safety and personally at SAPS KwaDukuza survival depends firstly on on 10111 or 032-5518206, or the yourself. In the words of the late Cluster Office at 032-5518223. Bruce Lee: Adapt or die! Always Together, we are doing it! Let's put be alert and ahead of crime. Work criminals behind bars, where they hand in glove with the local SAPS belong. and participate in all endeavours to address the root causes of crime. All information in terms of the above will be treated in the STANGER MANOR PRIMARY strictest of confidence and L. BODASING PRIMARY can be chanelled Time : 8am -5pm telephonically or

aves of fresh protests swept most of Glenhills and spilling over into Rocky Park on Monday and Tuesday respectively this week. According to KwaDukuza SAPS liaison officer, Johannes Khoza, when contacted on Monday; he said was due to lack of service delivery. However speaking to residents on Monday, amidst obstacles on the road like burning tyres, manhole slabs, whole trees, dumpsters and bushes; it was more. The man said that he along with the rest of the Glenhills residents were unhappy with the ward 13 head, Councillor B Dlavana because “he was giving jobs to outside people.” It is alleged that residents wanted him out. According to a source, learners from Glenhills Secondary School also joined the protest. The protests have affected the Glenhills Primary School, The Stanger Training Centre and the

Glenhills Community Clinic (which a source confirmed as closed due to protest). DA PR councillor Ajay Sahadew said that it was sad that schools and the clinic got caught in the middle and “hoped that the matter was resolved as soon as possible.” Tuesday morning saw most of Glenhills under lockdown by protesters where no vehicles could get in or out and people could not go to work. Rocky Park residents following in the domino effect created by residents in the Steve Biko township then lit up a line of tyres early in the morning blocking the entrance to Glenhills. The KwaDukuza Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu together with Deputy Mayor, Cllr Dolly Govender, Municipal Manager, Mr MJ Mdakane and law enforcement were present in the heart of Rocky Park at 11:30am. Residents were given an opportunity to address their grievances to the Mayor and his

delegation. Some individuals were chanting: “Sandeep must fall” to which the Rocky Park attendees started cheering. The Mayor was surprised by allegations levelled against Councillor Sandeep Oudhram. The main issues centered

around housing as well as jobs and in particular, the Rocky Park Housing Development. Charlie Norman Percent asked the Mayor “when can we move into the flats”? Solomon asked Cllr Mthembu “why jobs were given to outsiders.” Selvan Naidoo of Rocky Park thanked Sandeep for his involvement with “initiating the development,” but asked how much was spent and who would occupy the houses. Another man said the housing development “stank with corruption.” A Simsi executive addressed the issue of employment of Rocky Park residents by saying that it while they worked there, they did not adhere to workplace

rules and regulations and that she had a dossier of names. A youth turned to the Mayor and begged to know why Ward 19 residents were paying for water and rates “because they don't pay for water and lights in Ntshawini and Groutville.” “My grandmother has been applying and reapplying for an old age home since 1997 and she is 72,” he said emotionally. Residents also blocked the R102 between Mandeni and Gingindlovu with burning logs, on Monday, apparently because they are fed up with government's inability to supply them with water during the drought. Councillor Oudhram was contacted but declined to comment.

“GOSPEL” ALLEGATION IS UNFOUNDED, MISCHIEVOUS AND DEFAMATORY A letter written by a 'Balu G', entitled “Gospel is not for sale to Vivian Reddy” published in your newspaper on 26 February refers. I take the strongest exception to this unfounded, baseless and mischievous allegation by the almost faceless 'Balu' who is not brave enough to include his surname. The divisive tactic that he uninformedly talks about is exactly what he is guilty of in making these sweeping statements. I feel personally aggrieved that with the overwhelming and widespread support by the entire community across the religious and language lines, mischief makers such as 'Balu' create dissension by becoming self-styled 'guardians' of the community but done through deceit, lies and baseless allegations. I hereby inform 'Balu' that he will face the full might of the law as I am immediately starting legal litigation against him for his defamatory and inflammatory remarks. 'Balu' must show proof as to this so-called person 'tasked' with calling on Pastors and the allegations of my making offer of dubious donations. In course of my transparent and informative process of this development proposal, we had met with numerous people of different persuasions, religions and linguistic groups within the wider community. This was to inform them of the need and benefits of such a development and we were absolutely heartened by the almost total support for the project. Further, I have been a benefactor and philanthropist for decades and in the course of this God-blessed mission, people of all races and religions have benefited immensely from my generosity. The donations have been made far and wide within the larger KwaDukuza precinct and community and to derogate this by parochial and archaic minded people is totally abhorrent and reprehensible. I once again reiterate in the strongest possible terms that this kind of mischief-making, allegations and innuendos are all part of the destructive and dark forces that work under cloak within the community and are in fact the greatest impediments to progress, development and employment of our voiceless people. I will not stand by and allow this kind of slander-mongering to go unchallenged and 'Balu' will answer in court sooner than he knows it. I have instructed my legal team to invoke the provisions of the Access to Information Act to obtain the full name of 'Balu' and immediately proceed with litigation. The King and the Spider With

Vikram was a brave king. Once, he had to fight against a large army with just a few soldiers, he was defeated. He had to run for his life. Vikram took shelter in a forest cave. He was very depressed. His courage had left him. He was blankly gazing at the ceiling of the cave. An interesting scene captured his attention. A small spider was trying to weave a web across the cave ceiling. As the spider crawled up, a thread of the web broke and the spider fell down. But the spider did not give up. He tried to climb again and again. Finally, the spider successfully climbed up and completed the web. Vikram began to think, "If a small spider can face failure so bravely, why should I give up? I will try with all might till I win". This thought gave strength to the defeated king. Vikram got out of the jungle and collected his brave soldiers. He fought against the large army. He was defeated again. But now, he would not give up his fight. Vikram again and again fought against the large army and finally, after many attempts defeated the large army and regained his kingdom. He had learnt a lesson from the spider. MORAL: Perseverance paves way to success.

THANKS MAMA LATIFAH FOR MY HUSBAND HE CAME BACK AND KNELT DOWN FOR ME & APOLOGISED. My name is Rahma am 35 years old living in Ballito. I was happily married with 2 kids but a problem came when my husband started drinking. He even got a new young lady who was 23 years old. The house became a mess as we started fighting everyday. He could beat me every time I could talk about his girl friend and the way he was drinking. Because of his beating me too much I went to the police, he then decided leaving home and he could only come back the days he wanted. I could cry alone in the house with my kids. I tried some doctors but they all didn’t work so I knew that the end of my life upto when a friend of mine came home and found me crying, I told her my problems she directed me to Mama Latifah who helped me bring back my husband. You can’t believe but my husband knelt for me asking for my forgiveness, right now no more drinking no more fighting in the house. We are a happy family again. Thanks to Mama Latifah

Morningside trounce Magnum in local T20 clash and hit three fours and Jared made 9. Magnum were penalised 48 runs for their slow over rate. Magnum were chasing a stiff total of 182 for victory, and they never seemed to be able to get out of the blocks, they were bowled out for 86 runs. The first wicket fell in just the third over when Jared Naidoo bowled Shezad Kallen for just 5 runs, Jared picked up his second three balls later when he bowled Jaden Naidoo with his score on 4. Shriyan Naidoo when then run out by Owami Zondo for 4 runs. Then young leg spinner Leeson Naidoo picked up a hat trick, he cleaned bowled Stephen Singh who was on 10 at the time, with a ball that pitched on leg stump and took middle and off, beaten for turn. Then Magnum captain Sheldon Maduray came to the crease and decided to advance down the wicket and was well

beaten as he failed to get to the pitch of the ball and the ball turned past the bat and bowled him. For his hat trick wicket he was given catches all around the bat and didn't disappoint as he had Kreeson Chetty pushing hard at a looping bouncing ball and was well caught by Caleb Ramkisson. The only score of note came from Jabu, who frustrated the bowlers with is antics at the wicket, he made 27 until he was eventually bowled in the 19th over by Dylan Subrayen. Recently, a team of twelve hikers from the Mountain Backpackers Club of South Africa and locally based Smurfs Hiking Club undertook one of their toughest adventures when they conquered the treacherous mountain terrain of Injasvthi in Central Berg in extremely high temperatures, hot winds and steep terrain. The lack of water turned this high altitude adventure into a physical and mental test of

endurance. After traversing ridges and descending deep valleys and over nighting in ancient caves, the team successfully completed this tough expedition. However, the allure of nature will always etch the most sweetest of memories, long after the pains have healed. This truly, and truly only, the appreciation of life is in making moments out of minutes.

iLembe District Cricket Union Schools Association held their annual mini cricket festival last Wednesday at the KwaDukuza Country Club. The tournament

was open to all budding cricket enthusiasts for boys and girls in the U9 category and the tournament was a huge success. Remember that there can be an

AB de Villiers amongst these little ones as the South African captain has been a product of the KFC mini cricket.
