President Cyril Ramaphosa has reminded South Africans of the importance of receiving the Covid-19 vaccine. Ramaphosa says getting the jab is not only about protecting oneself against severe illness, but it is also akin to performing a patriotic duty to one's country

and fellow citizens. The president says at the current rate of vaccination, per day, the country is on course to achieve population immunity and thereby realize a swift a return to health and economic recovery. “I am encouraged that so many South Africans accept the

need to be vaccinated. The latest National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS) Coronavirus Rapid Mobile Survey (CRAM) found that there is increased public openness to accepting a COVID-19 vaccine. Only 1 in 10 South Africans believe that COVID-19 vaccines are

unsafe. “The number of vaccinations administered in South Africa has now passed the 7.5 million mark. Around three million people are fully vaccinated. At the present rate, we are vaccinating on average 220,000 people a day. In the coming weeks, this rate will increase significantly due to the arrival of more vaccine doses,” Ramaphosa indicated. The president is full of praise for frontline workers, in particular all the health professionals tasked with administering the vaccines. “I want to encourage South Africans to continue to follow the guidance of the World Health Organisation and our Department of Health around COVID-19 vaccines. We need to avoid spreading misleading and false information that can cause confusion. “As we work to vaccinate as many people as possible by end of the year, we salute the officials, healthcare workers and staff of the vaccination centres who are working tirelessly to support the national effort. But by far, the greatest heroes are the South African people, of whose resilience and steadfastness I remain in awe,” Ramaphosa stated.

ActionSA to contest KwaDukuza Municipality Herman Mashaba declares war on “corrupt government” GATVOL: ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba is seen addressing his party followers in KwaDukuza

ctionSA leader Dr Herman Mashaba argues that the recent unrests in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal had their root causes in ANC's internal battles. Mashaba made these remarks when he visited KwaDukuza on Thursday last week, to assess the damage caused by the unrests. His visit also included an announcement that his nascent p[arty will be contesting KwaDukuza Municipality in the upcoming local government elections. Mashaba has accused the ruling party of continuously “looting South Africa for the past 27 years”, resulting in higher levels of poverty, unemployment and inequality. The ActionSA leader insists that businesses that have been destroyed as a result of the unrests will take years to recover and rebuild, thereby further deepening the unemployment crisis facing the country. “Some of the businesses are not going to be able to bounce back. It's impossible. The destruction that we

have seen, it's not only us as South Africans that are affected; the investment community all over the world, because people invest in countries where there is a rule of law. The government, instead of going after the instigators of this violence, they are going into townships and villages, sending the army when they failed to send the army to protect businesses; they are sending the army to look for mealymeal. But what we are saying as ActionSA is that we are not going to let them get away with that. It's not going to happen,” Mashaba stated, eliciting some clapping from the small crowd that had gathered at the Chief Albert Luthuli status in central KwaDukuza. Mashaba also revealed that his party had decided to open a class action lawsuit against President Cyril Ramaphosa, Police Minister Bheki Cele, the ministers of the security cluster and the ANC as an organization, over the damage and losses suffered as a result of the recent violence and looting. Furthermore, the party is also in the process of asking President Cyril

Ramaphosa to instruct acting chief justice Raymond Zondo to appoint three judges to head up a commission into inquiry into the unrests. “In the event that in 60 days, the president refuses to respond positively to our request, we will then approach the public protector to force him to establish that commission. Wee are not going to all the parliament of criminals to investigate themselves. WE are not going to accept that,” Mashaba stressed. Mashaba singled out former ACDP councillor Nel Sewraj and his wife Michelle for working tirelessly to mobilize for ActionSA in KwaDukuza. Meanwhile, ActionSA KZN provincial chairperson Dr Makhosi Khoza accused the government of failing to protect the people of South Africa. Khoza also accused the ANC of spearheading a reign of looting through widespread corruption and malfeasance.

GJGM Regional Hospital thanks law enforcement The General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Regional Hospital has sent out an appreciation letter to KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor Cllr Dolly Govender, thanking the role played by KDM Special Operations Unit Officials during last month's unrest. The letter penned down by Acting CEO, Dr G. Lopez, states that during the week of the 12th of July 2021, the Special Operations Unit from KDM Crime Prevention and Traffic Police led by Marius Prinsloo, assisted a team of doctors to reach the hospital during the most critical time of the unrest, “The purpose of this correspondence is to place on record the gratitude of the medical and management teams at GJGM Regional Hospital. This guaranteed that patients were

Pedestrian killed by a truck on the R102

attended to and multiple lives were saved in our emergency department and operations theatre,” stated the letter “The same team later assisted the hospital transporting food to our kitchen in a moment when our food supplies for patients were critically low level. On behalf of the management team and staff at GJGM Regional Hospital, I extend our appreciation to KDM Municipality and their members,” added G. Lopez in a letter. Thanks and appreciation is extended to KwaDukuza SAPS warrant officer Vivi Kistia and Takko, Avesh of Hawks Security, Superintendent M. Arumugum, Officer S. Dladla and Officer R.V Gumede.

SCENE: An unidentified man was fatally injured after he was run over by a truck on the southbound lane of the R102 in the vicinity of Canelands, KZN. Passing motorists contacted RUSA requesting assistance for the pedestrian. Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the scene and on arrival located the body of the fatally injured man in the centre median. According to the driver of the Toyota Hino truck, he was traveling towards Canelands when the deceased suddenly ran into his path of travel. The driver of the truck was not injured.

to meet the demands we have to reach our set milestones and vaccinate a majority of the population soon,” said the Department.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged motorists to renew their driving license before the grace period deadline at the end of August. As a result of the national lockdown level 5 last year, licensing centres were forced to close which resulted in a backlog of expired licenses. Transport minister, Fikile Mbalula, subsequently announced an extension for these licenses. The RTMC said that all learner licenses, driving license cards, temporary driving licenses and professional driving licenses that expired between 26 March and 31 December 2020 were made valid for a grace period ending on 31 August 2021, “As the deadline fast approaches, members of the public are encouraged to take advantage of the extended operating hours at various licensing centres to renew their licenses before the deadline. Do not wait until the exact expiry date before considering to renew your vehicle or driving licence,” the RTMC said. “Allow at least four weeks lead time from date of application for the delivery of your driving licence card,” said RTMC The RTMC added that motorists should also apply for their driving license early to avoid having to apply for a temporary driving license, which will cost extra. The RTMC said that motorists should have the following documents ready when applying for their driving license: • Original ID and a copy, old driving licence card or valid South African passport • Four black and white ID photographs • Proof of residence • Licence renewal fee.

Radha Roopsingh Primary “rises from ashes” By Xpress Reporter

HISTORY: Radha Roopsingh Primary was founded 64 years ago by the Roopsingh family of Shakaskraal, and is named after Mrs Radha Roopsingh.

Losing eight classrooms and the entire office equipment has not deterred the team of educators from Radha Roopsingh Primary School in Etete from doing their utmost to provide education for children. A total of eight classrooms, including the principal's and the secretary's offices, were

burnt down by unknown attackers on the 14th of July 2021, leaving the more than 900 learners at the school with no hope of continuing with the current academic year. However the school is now in recovery. While the majority of the learners were not able to return to school on Monday this week, the school principal, Mr CL Naidoo is confident the school will be able to invite learners back to school by the end of this week. Six of the eight prefab classrooms that have been supplied by the Department of Education had already been erected when the Xpress Times visited the school on Monday morning. The remaining two were in the process of being installed. “Our hope is that by the end RECOVERY: Installation of prefab classrooms is underway, after the school was gutted by fire.

of this week the learners will be back in school. Unfortunately we will not be able to accommodate all the learners at the same time, as there is no room for us to do so. So we will have to revert back to the rotational system. “It's very unfortunate what happened. 64 Years of a rich academic history going up in flames like that,” Naidoo ruminated. Naidoo says even though the school lost all stationery, the learners will bring their own stationery so that lessons could continue. The Grade 7 learners are already back in school, being taught in the few remaining classrooms that have been deemed safe for occupation. The school is still inviting concerned members of the public and the business community to come forward to offer any help necessary to help the institution along in its recovery process. In this respect, Mr Naidoo can be contacted on (084) 5545530.

Honouring our Women You strike a woman, you strike a rock

confidence and do research if they seek to create sustainable and growing business. 'A lot of people fail because we lack determination. This month I urge my fellow women to grab opportunities with both hands, the number of women-owned business has increased dramatically in recent years. As Imbokodo we are capable,” added Mbonambi.

This coming Monday 09 August South Africans will be commemorating the great women's march of 1956, where women marched to the Union Buildings to protest against the carrying of pass books. On 9 August 1956, about 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against legislation aimed at tightening the apartheid government's control over the movement of black women in urban areas. This year the Xpress Times Newspaper is joining South Africans in celebrating the significant role played by women in our daily lives that ensures stability, progress and long-term development of the nation. In today's society women are seen walking down the path of obstacles, battling gender inequality in society, calling for the empowerment of women especially the young generation and succeeding and excelling in various fields of their professions.

Kavitha Mudali - a fountain of inspiration for fellow ladies

Darnall resident Kavitha Mudali is the shining light to all women. She is a mother of three sons, and director of Mudali Trading, which specializes in toilet paper, industrial wipes, Decka rolls, multifolds and serviettes. Mudali Trading has been operating since 2008. That does not stop this stunning, beautiful and talented woman from exploring other areas of business. Kavitha is now a wellness and motivational coach. She offers a free online service to all women. Kavitha draws much strength and inspiration from her wonderful husband, Dayalan Mudali. “I owe my success to my husband. He is my pillar of strength, always pushing me to be the best that I can be,” she says. “I have noticed that women have lost confidence in themselves, lost sight of how beautiful and amazing they are. This pandemic has also played a huge part in women feeling this way. I am here to bring back the confidence, to motivate you to encourage you that anything is possible. Just don't lose focus. “Everyone faces challenges. Don't be discouraged. Let that be a stepping stone to motivate you to persevere to reach greater heights. I refuse to let a woman be anything but the best that they can be. Even in moments of doubt, take control. Remember, the strongest factor for success is self-esteem. Believe you can do it, believe you deserve it and believing you will get it. Mask on, sanitize and shine like the star that you are,” added Kavitha

like to come from unprivileged family. “I worked with a number of families under different programmes promoting social change and the empowerment of people and communities. It hasn't been an east journey, lot of challenges along the way but as you go on you gradually see positive results, you see improvement in people's lives which what we all strive for as social workers,” said Hlakula Hlakula further added that the fight for equality is still, urged women, the upcoming generation to take up space, hold their head high and embark on programmes that seek to empowerment. “Government has a number of women empowerment programmes that contribute to gender equality. I urge our young girls to be alert and question everything that they see so they be informed and equipped to face challenges that may arise. It has been a pleasure to work with women over the years, seeing women starting from nothing to being farm overs, will always be a highlight of my career,” added Hlakula. In conclusion 'Mama Hlaks' touched on the matter of gender based violence, saying it's heart-wrenching to see women being subjected to scourge of violence. “It's our duty as society to teach women and men at a very young age about GBV. It's important to seek help when facing challenges,” added Hlakula. In her 30 year career Nokuzuko Hlakula presided over the launch of day care centres, food parcel distributing, women empowerment programmes and crime prevention programmes.

'I choose vaccination' says KZN Premier

R26 billion for extended SRD grant By Xpress Reporter

PREMIERE: On 27 July 2021 KZN Premiere Sihle Zikalala got his jab at the Inkosi Mzondeni Hall, at KwaMsane in Mtubatuba.

By Xpress Reporter

On 27 July 2021, The KwaZulu Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala became one of over 1, 186 562 people who have been vaccinated in the Province since the programme began in February 2021. The Premier, who got his jab at the Inkosi Mzondeni Hall, at KwaMsane in Mtubatuba said the government calls on people of SA to get vaccinated. “We call on all the people of KZN to ensure that they vaccinate. They must register on the Electronic Vaccination Data System. We have more than 200 vaccination centres across KZN. Today I took a

vaccine. It is a responsible decision and commitment to protect our livelihood,” said Zikalala. People aged 35 years and above are urged to register on the EVDS Self Registration Portal for the vaccine. Vaccination for people aged 18- 34 will open on September 01. “Today I took a vaccine. It is a responsible decision and commitment to protect our livelihood,” added Zikalala on his social media pages According to KZN Provincial Government all vaccines used in South Africa have been tested and approved by SAHPRA.

One day the wife of a writer said to him that you write a lot of books, so today write something for me and then I will believe that you are really a good writer, here is what the writer wrote: MY MAGIC HOUSE I, my wife and our kids live in a magical house We take off our dirty clothes, which are cleaned the next day. We take off our shoes as soon as we come from school and office. Then the next morning we wear clean, polished shoes Every night the garbage basket is full of garbage and the next morning it is empty. In my magical house, children's clothes smell while playing, but the next moment they become clean And their sports equipment is quickly rearranged in their own boxes. Every day in my magical house, favourite food is made for me and my children... In my magical house, you can hear "Mama, Mama, Mama” called about a hundred times every day Mama where is the nail clipper? Mama, complete my homework Mama, brother is beating me Mama Baba Jani has come Mama, don't forget to prepare my school lunch box today. Mama, make biryani today Mama, I can't find an ant today. She walks in a line here every day Mama make me a sandwich, I'm hungry Mama, I have to go to the washroom Mama, I was hungry before, not now the last word heard is "Mama" before going to bed at night and the first word heard is "Mama" when I wake up in the morning in my magical house... Of course, no one has ever been attracted to this magical house. Although ever yone has this magical house... And rarely would anyone have ever thanked the magician of this house The magician of these magical houses is none other than every wife and mother, who perform such magic in their own homes. May God bless every wife and mother, whose patience and unending deeds bring prosperity to every home.

Government has set aside R26.7 billion to fund the reinstated social relief of distress (SRD) grant of R350 per month, which will be terminated in March next year. The extended SRD grant was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his address to the nation on the 25th of July. Finance Minister Tito Mboweni has since provide details on how this extended grant, and the many other relief packages that have been announced by government, will be financed and managed. Mboweni has also confirmed the president's announcement that the SRD grant has now been extended to cater for unemployed “care givers” who also receive the child support grant, on an application basis. The minister emphasized that the SRD grant was not a permanent social protection solution. He said much work still needed to be done in this area, warning that additional borrowings for what he termed a “consumption grant” were out of the question. The minister also announced that a further R5.3 billion had been allocated to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), for the extension of the TERS benefit. This will be designed to provide relief to those who have lost their jobs due to the ongoing lockdowns. “It is expected that the package will amount to R38.9 billion of on-budget items, including revenue measures of R5 billion and spending measures of R33.9 billion. As required by section 32

FISCUS: Finance Minister Tito Mboweni

of the PFMA, the National Treasury will publish the quarterly revenue and spending position of the government at the end of this week. “These fiscal indicators will show that government is sufficiently ahead of its revenue estimate to accommodate the fiscal relief measures. Therefore, the package can be accommodated without an increase in debt, especially borrowings from the market. As such, our fiscal strategy remains on track. The implementation of these relief measures will not result in a change in the debt trajectory and the fiscal deficit will not exceed the level presented in the February Budget. As a principle, government will avoid financing any measures from an increase in market lending, and we have different options in this regard,” Mboweni elucidated. Additional measures have also

been announced to enable the economic sectors that were hard hit by the most recent hard lockdown. These include, inter alia, deferral of personal income tax by three months, and the deferral of excise duties on alcohol. “Let me reiterate what I said earlier. We will maintain the fiscal path we announced in the February budget. In this regard, fiscal consolidation remains a key pillar of our strategy and we do not intend to deviate from it. We are keenly aware that the announcement of these relief measures comes in the context of existing pressures on the fiscus. The largest of these is the public sector wage bill. Government's latest offer has been accepted by a majority of labour unions. Work has been underway in the National Treasury to finalise the areas of reprioritisation for the public wage bill,” Mboweni stated.

Family destitute after house gutted by fire By Xpress Reporter

An Etete family has been left utterly destitute after their house was gutted by fire last week. Neighbours report that the family of five were all inside the house when the fire started, at around 05:30am. They said some of the children had to be roused up from their sleep in order to escape the flames. Fortunately nobody sustained any injuries. The family members were left only with the clothes they we standing in. Everything was destroyed. The community is appealing for donations on behalf of the hapless family. At the time of going to print, no relief had been provided to the family, although an official from KwaDukuza Municipality's disaster management unit had reportedly visited the family on Sunday to assess the situation. Slindile Palesa Khanyile, one of the community members who are coordinating relief effort on behalf of the family, told our reporter that an Etete based NGO called the Breakthrough Centre had also promised to organize some help for the family. Anyone who wishes to make a donation is urged to contact Ms Khanyile on (078) 706-1941.

Tokyo 2020: Wailing in joy with his friend An extraordinarily emotional celebration followed after Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi became the joint gold medal winner in high jump with his friend and the favourite Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar. Gianmarco Tamberi lay writhing in the ground, rolling and twisting. Wailing in joy. In the stands his coach broke down. In 2016, just before the Rio Olympics, attempting a 2.41 metre high jump to break his own Italian record, he crash-landed. The shoe tore apart, the ankle ruptured and he stared at his leg and sobbed like a kid as he realised he would be out of Rio. Five men had to console him and somehow transfer him to a stretcher.

Five years later, he is a joint Olympic gold medallist with his friend Mutaz Essa Barshim in a remarkable sequence of events. It all came down to his last jump. The favourite, Barshim, had failed to clear 2.39. If Tamberi did, he would be the winner. If he didn't, there would be a jump-off with Barshim. The event had already been close to three hours. Tamberi placed the leg plaster cast that he wore after his horrific injury near the top of his run-up. A reminder of the pain and the subsequent inspirational comeback journey, perhaps. On it was a text: Road to Tokyo 2020. The year was crossed and 2021 written below. Tamberi started to sway from heel to toe and urged the crowd to clap. Not needing an invitation, and fully aware of the significance of the potential goldmedal jump, they g a v e h i m thunderous claps. The above association requests all locally Tamberi began his owned security companies who are angular sprint and PSIRA registered to attend a planning leaped but came meeting. down with the bar. KWADUKUZA SECURITY ASSOCIATION MEETING

Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy celebrate after winning gold

while jumping, and Tamberi ran to him and enveloped him in a hug. An official walked up to them and asked Barshim, “Do you want to continue to jump-off?” Gently nudging Tamberi, whose head was buried in his shoulders, Barshim had a question back at the official: “Do we have to?” And even as the official politely told him that it was up to them, Barshim had decided that it would be shared. An exuberantly emotional Tamberi leapt into the arms of his friend and a slow smile spread across Barshim's face. Tamberi spun around and started to wail. A long piercing, almost endless, tearful cry. Barshim had moved to the edge of the arena, and started to cry into

the arms of his team, who leaned over and closed on him. Tamberi would writhe in the ground. He would get up and fall again. All along, the throaty wailing sobbing continued. A few yards away, Barshim removed his sunglasses and wiped a tear. Then, Tamberi sank to his knees, picked his leg cast, and lifted it to the skies and screamed an aural memory that's bound to forever stay in the minds of anyone who was there or even watched it on the telly. Wrapped in his Qatar flag, Barshim walked over to his friend and said, “Get up, get up, don't stay on the floor. Get up”. The Italian obeyed and sprang up but continued to sob, this time leaning

on the rails. In 2017, when he returned to competitive jumping after the injury, nothing was going right for Tamberi. After yet another poor performance in a tournament, he shut himself in his room when someone started to repeatedly knock on the door. It was Barshim. “Mutaz started knocking on my room and he wouldn't go away. First I just wanted him to leave. He persisted and was shouting: “Gimbo. Gimbo, please I want to talk to you.” So I gave in and let him in,” Tamberi wrote in spikes.worldathletics.org in January 2018. “ We talked. I cried “in front of him. He tried to calm me down, and told me what he had to say. “Don't try to rush it,” he kept telling me. “You had a big injury; you're already back in the Diamond League. No one expected that. But now you need to take your time, don't expect too much too early from yourself. Just see what happens.” The most important thing he helped me realise was that I had to do it for myself, not for others. A productive tournament followed in Budapest. “Something inside me changed; there I really started to live again. I was a high jumper again.” Three years later, he is an Olympic gold medal. With his friend. Sometimes, just sometimes, dreams do come true.

Kaizer Chiefs beat Orlando Pirates 4-3 on penalties to claim the 2021 Carling Black Label Cup at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday. The game ended goalless after 90 minutes, even though Daniel Cardoso had a second-half penalty saved by Pirates keeper Richard Ofori. In the shootout, Ntsikelelo Nyauza and Wayde Jooste had their penalties saved by Brandon Petersen while Sabelo Radebe was the only Chiefs player to miss a spot-kick. In what was a proper pre-season game where combinations didn't quite come together for both teams and it wasn't surprising that the game went to penalties. While there were chances that kept the goalkeepers Richard Ofori for Orlando Pirates and Itumeleng Khune for Kaizer Chiefs busy, Chiefs should have taken the lead in the 75th minute.

They were awarded a penalty after Radebe's shot connected with Nyauza's hand, and referee Thando Ndzandzeka had no option but to award the spot-kick. The normally efficient Cardoso somehow fluffed his lines and his penalty was saved by the returning Ofori, who missed the bulk of the 2020/21 season with injury. Chiefs didn't start with their new signings, but the likes of Cole Alexander and S'Fiso Hlanti did come on during the second half. The 24-year-old South African broke Denmark's Rikke Moller Pedersen world record set in Barcelona in 2013. "When I first saw my time, I saw 2:19 [King's time on the electronic scoreboard], and didn't know that wasn't my time," said the Tuks University
