KD and DSD unite against drug abuse By Xpress Reporter
K
waDukuza Municipality Mayor, Ricardo Mthembu together with the Department of Social Development embarked on an anti-
abuse march on Wednesday, 26 April 2017. This march served as a build up to the Provincial Anti-Substance & Drug Abuse Summit which will be hosted at the Durban Olive Centre in May under the theme “KwaZulu-
Natal unites against substance abuse in reclaiming our communities.” The march started at SADTU Park and was led by Mthembu and ILembe District Municipality Deputy Mayor, Dolly Shandu to
KwaDukuza Taxi Rank. The marchers chanted “Down with drug abuse” and “No more drugs in our community” as they made their way through Chief Albert Luthuli Street, onto Hullet Street and into the rank. Mthembu urged the public to join forces with public s a f e t y officials in order to be a formidable team against d r u g trafficking a n d substance abuse. “The time to clamp down s e l f enrichment through drugs has come. We have to build a drug
free society; this is why we are here, because we have recognized that drug abuse is a community problem” said Mthembu. “Hopefully, it won't end here with just this march and that we will all continue fighting drug abuse wherever we are. I urge everyone to consult with the police and various institutions dealing with this epidemic so that we can be able to fight and do away with it” Following Mthembu's address, a former drug addict, Mr. Lindinkosi Majola spoke of his own ordeal with drug abuse having been a woonga addict for seven years. “Drugs led to the community and my parents disowning me. It even got to the point where I was beaten by the community; luckily I survived and was able to change. “I would really like to urge the municipality to help us after rehab, because we struggle to find employment and activities to keep us busy which might lead some of us to go back to drugs. We are not looking for something huge, just any kind of employment that can Continued on page 7

A horror tale If the claims of a 13-year-old are to be believed, then something is horribly wrong with society. The girl claims she had a boyfriend who showered her with gifts. Her mother found out about the relationship and forbade her to see him. In mid January, the two planned for her to elope. She stayed in his house where she was repeatedly raped on a daily basis. She claims that he threatened her family with violence, hence her reluctance to flee or report to anyone. A close friend of the culprit would bring her food and keep her company. He eventually helped her to escape and he too began sexually abusing her until she fled and reported the matter. A 26-year-old man is being held in custody. Police have not arrested the bad Samaritan to date. Love hurts Perseverance Dumakuse (21) of Groutville alleges that she met her ex recently and he began a conversation with her. Soon they were arguing over a child they have together and he began assaulting her by kicking, punching and hitting her with open hands. She sustained severe injuries and reported to police. Musa Khambule (27) was charged for the incident and is due back at court on 27 June. Brazen and idiotic Slindokuhle Sanga alleges that she parked her vehicle in King Shaka Street. She returned to the vehicle in which her children were waiting and found a crowd gathered around the vehicle. Her son reported that someone had

stolen the bag containing cash of R2200.00 from the vehicle. Information about the alleged culprit was provided by a person who knows the culprit. She waited at the railway station and he was spotted and arrested by a group of people two hours later. He only had R400 in his possession and pointed out the empty bag. Sanele Dube (21) is due back at court on 30 May. Once too often Troublesome Wadelyn Poliah (24) of Glenhills is back in the dock. According to Hezron Munien he noticed his wedding ring band missing. He suspected Poliah, whose brushes with the law for theft are too well-known, who resides on the same premises. According to police he fled before their arrival but was arrested by them and the ring was recovered. Poliah is due back at court on 30 May. Connected Nothing beats the old fashioned “stop and search” tactic of the police. Police officer Johnnyboy Luthuli alleges that he spotted a suspicious behaving youth in the Morningside area and searched him. He found a piece of cocaine and several items of new clothing which the culprit claimed were his. Looking at the condition of the culprit, the officer believed he could not afford such clothing and began questioning him. The culprit led officers to a shop in Cato Street owned by Pakistani, Muhammed Shaid, whose premises were broken into two days prior to the arrest. Mathanda Gina (29) is now facing two charges and is due back at court on 30 May.

Winter Fair 2017 will be held from 29 June to 02 July 2017. The theme for this year is based on the concept of 'out with the old and in with the new.' Mr Sandeep Oudhram, President of CWSA KwaDukuza and Fair Director stated that this year, the public can look forward to new and exciting changes to the Society's biggest fundraising event, the Annual Winter Fair. The first big change will be a
move to a new, bigger and better location namely the Stanger High School Grounds. This location boasts 3 grounds which provides more space for exhibitors and entertainment. Patrons looking for a thrill at the fair will be very pleasantly surprised with the range of rides that the New Funfair offers. Chetty's Funfair needs no introduction as their reputation for providing world class adrenalin pumping rides
speaks for itself. The Enterprise, Miami and Ranger are just a few of the rides that will be available this year. One of the highlights at the fair is the stunning displays by our exhibitors. Patrons visiting the fair can look forward to great items for the whole family. There will also be a very different variety of food items available to tantalize your taste buds. Entertainment for the fair is
still in the planning stage. However expect the unexpected this year! The winter fair planning committee has been meeting on a regular basis to ensure that this year's fair is the biggest and best by far. Individuals who are interested in participating in the planning are welcome to attend the meetings. For further details on meeting schedules, contact child welfare on 0325512129.

Mayor takes a stand against drug abuse Continued from page 1 help us get through the day,” said Majola. Soon after the march, KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu convened a Drugs and Substance Abuse Indaba at ILembe Auditorium as part of intensifying action against the upsurge of social ills. During this event, the mayor made a commitment to champion the fight against illicit drugs and substance abuse within KwaDukuza. “In May, we will convene a round-table discussion to zoom in on drug issues and make key policy proposals as part of intensifying the fight

against drugs even if it means that we come up with draconian measures to affect substance abuse. “It is critical that we come up with a solution based engagement that will lead to a result-based programme and I am willing to work with anyone to eradicate the scourge of illegal drug peddling. It is worth noting that such events are not converted to talk-shows but be platforms for taking decisive steps aimed at beating the menace of illicit drugs.” Mthembu also lamented the manner in which drugs are plaguing the local community.

Minister visits Ndwedwe farm workers By Xpress Reporter
The Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant, hosted an unannounced Imbizo with sugar cane farm workers in Ndwedwe, ILembe District, on Sunday 23 April 2017 to address some of the issues that affect farm workers in this region which includes unlawful deductions of wages, productivity based pay system, non-payment of Public Holiday rates, inadequate protective clothing and other issues. This Imbizo was also aimed at educating the farm workers about the rights accorded to them by various labour legislation acts such as the Labour Relations Act,
Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Employment Equity Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act. According to KZN labour spokesperson Lungelo Mkamba, inspectors found that farmers violated various labour laws. Some workers were not provided protective gear, sanitation and were paid far below the minimum wage without sick leave or public holiday pay. Inspectors from the Durban, Verulam and Stanger labour offices inspected 29 farms with only six found to be compliant with labour laws. Mkamba said, “At one farm, workers were exposed to hazardous
chemicals. At another, there was no eye protection or partitioning of an area where
welding was done or guarding of shears, guillotines or presses.”

The African National Congress in Greater KwaDukuza Region hosted a fruitful OR Tambo lecture at KwaDukuza Town Hall on Friday, 28 April 2017. The guest speakers that took to the podium included, Provincial Chairperson of the ANCYL, Kwazi Mshengu and ANCYL Regional Chairperson Mfanafuthi Ngcobo. Among the things discussed at this

lecture was that 'The decisions of the higher structure bind the lower structures and that comrades defying the mandate given by the organisation will not be tolerated'. Furthermore; the ANCYL agreed that former leaders deployed anywhere, but not assisting young people will never get any support from the youth league. The move by the ANCYL in the region to host OR Tambo's lecture is in line with the decision by the National Executive Committee of this party to declare 2017, 'The year of OR Tambo'.

President Jacob Zuma together with SACP's Blade Nzimande was supposed to give key note addresses at the Workers Day Rally along with other alliance partners' leaders in Bloemfontein on May 1. Despite reports that scores of workers were planning to disrupt the president the event was given
Is the Alliance reaching breaking point?
a go ahead. It was until Zuma was about to deliver his speech where he was hackled and booed of the stage by unionists thus prompting the COSATU leadership to cancel the Rally altogether. The question remains as to what will be the consequences of this as already there are tensions between the alliances.
REFLECTIONS OF THE SOUL Self control...contributing to a new humanity! In our present world where instability and corruption have spiralled out of control, it is time to introspect on the one thing that you really do have control over “YOU”. Have you lived with regret up to now, over the things you have said in the spur of the moment? Sometimes you simply lose all control and cannot stop yourself from overreacting to stressful situations, instead of responding to them. In all spheres of life, you are expected to contain yourself and exercise a degree of control and patience. But what happens when you have an overload of unaddressed issues and the stress has caused you to explode? Many times, you are faced with challenges, and it becomes almost impossible to control your words and actions. The greater the self awareness, the more you are able to exercise control over yourself in stressful situations. The way you deal with conflict and difficult people depends on your state of mind
and inner peace. At times you have to be humble and accept the fact that you don't always have control over others' actions. Your 'secret weapon' is to respond successfully to whatever comes your way. You have the power to control your negative thoughts and behavioural patterns. By remaining in charge of the situation, you are less vulnerable to lashing out in ways others expect you to. Focusing on the positive and remaining calm will enable you to achieve a healthy state of mind. You can prevent many sleepless nights caused by unnecessary stress, simply by learning how the mind and body works. BRAIN GYM allows the mind and body to be in balance, maintaining peace and harmony. It enables you to live life in the present moment. However, in stress mode, you lose all sense of reason and the ability to think clearly. You can easily 'lose your cool'. In this state, the brain stem, situated at the back of the brain, is switched on, causing you to feel victimised. You often find the need to retaliate by resorting
to foul language, aggression and impulsive violent behaviour. This can be overcome with better decision making skills. Rewire your brain using regular Brain Gym movements and balances. These techniques are proven to assist in overcoming stress and anxiety. When the frontal lobe cortex of the brain is switched on, you can attain greater positivity and calmness. You will be in a favourable position to handle anger and conflict more effectively. You will enjoy living in the present and being more aware of yourself, thereby gaining access to your inner wisdom and intuition. You can shape your reality by being in a profound state of self awareness, leading to absolute self control. You can make a difference by exercising self control in YOUR life... playing your part towards peace in the world! - Farah Manjoo Holistic Empowerment Coach & Learning Strategist BARAAQA Healing Sanctuary & Learning Centre 083 786 4417

Mandeni Municipality Mayor, Councillor Siphesihle Zulu unveiled the Nyathini Electrification project which will be spearheaded by Thake Electrical on Thursday, 20 April 2017 at Macambini MultiPurpose Hall. Zulu announced this project during an IDP meeting that convened wards 1, 2, 3 and 8 community members. The announcement of this project at Macambini came days after the area was engulfed by heavy winds which left a number of households without proper houses. In his address, Zulu
conveyed words of condolences to the victims of the heavy winds. “As Mandeni we have decided to install electricity (infills) in wards, about 250 households will be electrified now that profiling is complete,” said Zulu. He announced that streetlights will be installed in all wards as part of bringing light and preventing criminal activities in crime torn areas. In addition to the Nyathini electrification project, Zulu also announced that about 240 households will also receive electricity in Mangeza and Falethu area. Zulu stressed the importance of having a library situated at
Macambini to enhance learners' performances at school and also announced that waste skips will be placed in all parts of this rural area. “I am honoured to announce that the road from Dokodweni toll-gate to Dokodweni beach will also be renovated to the black-top” said Zulu. Meanwhile, other ongoing projects in this area include the renovation of the community hall at Mphumlandoda area in ward 8, fencing and construction of the grand stand at KwaChili Sports field. The electrification project is due to start in May and is expected to be completed by October.

Team FORD 032 brings joy to the needy
KZN teams bundled out of the 2017 Champions Cup Lady luck turned her back on the KZN teams at the 2017 Champions Cup hosted by Volleyball South Africa (VSA) for the country's elite men and women's teams at the University of Kwa Zulu Natal's Westville Campus Sports Centre over the weekend. None of the host province's nine (9) men's teams or its two (2) women's teams could get into the semi final stage that would have given them a fighting chance to reach the podium as medallists. However KZN's best performers were its men's teams: Liberte, UKZN and DUT who exited the tournament in the quarter final stage. The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) beat Liberte (3-1) while UKZN and DUT were edged out by Kamplits and Uni Jozi (UJ) by the same margin. While the local fans were saddened by the early exit of their teams the action packed volleyball in the crucial knock out stages kept the crowd thoroughly entertained. The women's final between the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) , the 2016 silver medallists and Limpopo's Kamplits was a five set thriller won by the latter by a (25-17; 25-20; 15-25; 18-25; 158) score line. After having taken the first two sets (25-17; 25-20) an over confident Limpopo outfit were staring at defeat when the fired up VUT levelled matters (2-2). When setter of the tournament, Sina Rakumakwe turned on the magic with
her sublime setting it unleashed her attackers Tebogo Sejewe (best attacker) and Thanda Majaha who combined well to put the match beyond the reach of VUT when they posted a confident 15-8 final set score. It was Kamplits first win in a final at this level of competition. In the men's final clash between Kamplits and Uni Jozi (UJ) the latter's coach Hugan Coopasamy must be credited for plotting the downfall of the high riding team from Limpopo whose attackers, the tall and lanky Jonas Mothobi and Natahniel Rafapa were constant thorns in the sided of UJ. After winning a hard fought first set by a 25-22 margin Coopasamy's charges had only themselves to blame for losing the tightly contested 2nd set by a 26-24 margin. UJ's vastly experienced playmaker, Jeremy Sunker (the tournament's best setter) restored confidence in his attackers by playing the quicker set that allowed them to power their way past their opponents' blockers. Kamplits twin destroyers, Rafapa and Mothobi were not given much chance of upsetting the Gauteng lads as Keifer Govender (best attacker) and Martin Zulu, who picked up the most valuable player accolade posted a 2516; 25-23 score line to lift the Champions Cup silverware for the 4th time in the cup's seventeen year history. The tournament's top two teams in both genders will represent South Africa at the African Zone 6 club championship later this year.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers expects Liverpool to pip Manchester United to a spot in the top four. The former Liverpool boss has just led the Bhoys to a Scottish league title, and gave his verdict on the competition south of Hadrian's Wall. "With the games Liverpool have left, they would expect themselves to qualify," he told. "They haven't got European football, so they're just preparing for that one game a week," said Rodgers. "Manchester United have got a couple of games in hand. "But towards they're end of the season that can be told ugh and they've got other games [the Europa League semi-final with Celta Vigo] and maybe they'll see other priorities," he added. "Liverpool have points in the bag,
they've won more games and if they win their next four games or so, hopefully that'll be enough for them." Meanwhile Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said in a post-match interview after beating Watford 1-0 that the race for a top four spot isn't over after his side retained control of their top-four destiny. Meanwhile, Coutinho played down his injury concerns. Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has played down the injury he sustained in Monday night's 1-0 win over Watford. Emre Can scored the only goal of the game - a superb bicycle-kick - in first half stoppage time, at Vicarage Road, to further secure the Reds' place in third on the Premier League standings. Coutinho had to be replaced by Adam Lallana after just 13 minutes of the match, but he has subsequently played down the knock, on his Instagram Handbags from account. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp explained the injury was a simple dead leg, meaning Coutinho would be back in action for their next game against Southampton. Klopp said after the Watches Long Sleeve Tees from from game: "He has a dead leg, hopefully it's not too serious but of course it's really painful and no chance [he could Or buy 2 for T-Shirts continue]. Everybody could see he tried hard, but no chance," each Coutinho, who posed alongside Can for his post, wrote: "Thanks to all for the support. It isn't 53a King Shaka Street, Stanger 032 551 1140 serious.”
