Robbery at Stanger Secondary School Nyathikazi residents up in arms

By Xpress Reporter

Three armed men allegedly posing as parents, held up staff members at Stanger Secondary School during Grade 8 registrations on Saturday at around 12:20pm. The robbers allegedly took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled in a brown VW Polo. According to a

statement released by the school on their Facebook page, the finance clerk sustained injuries during the robbery. “The school Finance Clerk was injured and the rest of the team (staff / clerks / guards) have been traumatised by the events that unfolded. Learners attending the DoE IT Teach-

a-Learner programme from both our school and visiting schools, are safe,” said the statement. KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson, Constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo confirmed the incident and said that police are working tirelessly together with the community to apprehend the culprits. “SAPS is in search

of three armed males who robbed Stanger Secondary School on Saturday and fled in a VW Polo. We also urge anyone who might have tangible information which can lead to the arrest of these suspects to come forward,” said Khuzwayo. A case of business robbery was opened at KwaDukuza SAPS.

Residents of the Nyathikazi area in Ward 3 have allegedly been living without water for a year. To add to their woes, it is alleged that they are still being charged for water and sewerage. According to a disheartened community member, there are three homes in Nyathikazi farm that do not have water. “We approached iLembe Municipality numerous times but we are met with empty promises. Officials installed a pipe about 6 months ago, but they did not return until two months ago when they came to the area and said that they are trying to figure out the fault. After that, they never came back,” he said. The resident added that their numerous attempts to get help from officials have been in vain. “We reached out to officials who keep promising to help us, but nothing is being done. We are at our wits' end.” Attempts to reach iLembe Municipality for a comment were unsuccessful at the time of going to press.

SADTU celebrates Women's Month

By Xpress Reporter

CELEBRATION: The South African Democratic Teachers Union in KwaDukuza held a memorable Woman's Day celebration on the 31st of August 2018 at Ilembe Auditorium, to empower and honour the role played by women in society. The event was attended by over 100 SADTU members.

Life sentence for KwaDukuza rapist

The suspect who allegedly robbed the Valley Road, Umhlali residents on Tuesday morning and fled to Durban with various valuables was apprehended by police on Tuesday last week. According to a statement released by the police, it is alleged that on 28 August 2018 at 09:00 a domestic worker was working at a house in Valley Road, Umhlali when she was attacked by the gardener. She was tied up with a rope whilst the suspect removed various items including jewelry, computers, laptops, cellphones, cash and a safe. “Umhlali detectives assisted by

the Umhlali K9 Unit worked around the clock to bring a robbery suspect to book. The 26-year-old man is due to appear in the Umhlali Magistrates Court facing a robbery charge. He was arrested in Durban Central Business District a few hours after he committed the crime. Police recovered stolen goods to the value of more than R3million from the suspect,” said the statement. “The suspect fled the scene with the stolen items however due to the speedy response by police, he was nabbed on the same day. The items recovered by police were positively identified by the owner and were handed over to him.”

By Xpress Reporter

A 32-year-old man from KwaDukuza has been sentenced to life and 95 years imprisonment in the Durban High Court after pleading guilty to nine counts of rape and seven counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances. On Thursday, the court heard how the victim performed poorly at school, and the embarrassment of having to report the rape to family members. The man committed the crimes in the Groutville, Thembeni, Charlottedale and Chibini areas from 2011 to 2016, where he would attack the complainants, aged between 16 and 55 years old, while on their way to work, church or school. He would rape the complainants and then make off with their money and/or cell phones. On one occasion, the accused acted with two companions. He also used a knife and gun to threaten the women. DNA evidence was used to link the man to eight victims, and the ninth victim positively identified the man. The man was sentenced to life and 80 years imprisonment for the rape charges and 15 years imprisonment for the robberies. The Director of Public Prosecutions in KwaZulu Natal, Adv. Moipone Noko said the sentence was appropriate given the crimes committed. “This sentence should go a long way in addressing the scourge of sexual violence,” she said.

KDM hands over title deeds

HAND OVER: KDM Mayor, Cllr Ricardo Mthembu and MEC for Human Settlements in KZN, Mr Ravi Pillay handing over a title deed to the Ndlela family

By Xpress Reporter

Last week over 300 Darnall residents became proud home owners, KwaDukuza Municipality working together with the Department of Human Settlements in the province of KwaZulu Natal have been working tirelessly in an effort to fast track the process of issuing title deeds. On Tuesday, 28 August 2018, MEC for the Department of Human Settlements, Mr Ravi Pillay accompanied by KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor, Cllr Ricardo Mthembu handed over 300 title deeds to the community of Darnall (ward 2). 120 of them were handed over to women. Speaking to the masses who attended the event held at Soweto Sports Ground in Darnall, Pillay said that there is a lot of dignity that is restored in people's lives when they receive title deeds. “These title deeds affirm ownership and these houses

become more than just a shelter to people. They become homes. As Government we also appeal to those who will not be receiving title deeds today to be patient,” said Pillay. According to KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor Mthembu the government appreciates the important role that homeownership plays in redress, he said that as a municipality they vow to accelerate delivery of sustainable housing to the people of KwaDukuza. “The KwaDukuza Municipality commits itself in empowering the lives of the people of KwaDukuza. But the public needs to understand that the process of issuing title deeds requires a lot of resources therefore we are unable to deliver at once. I congratulate all beneficiaries and remind them that they are now responsible for the care of their property and to ensure it grows in value they must maintain it,” said Mthembu.

How to protect your children against abduction These simple rules could save your children's lives South Africans are still reeling in shock after the alleged discovery of the body of Miguel Louw who went missing shortly after leaving his school in Rippon Road, Sydenham on July 17. He was last seen on the day in the presence of a man who last week was granted R2500 bail in the Durban Magistrate's Court in connection with his abduction. The suspect was found in possession of Miguel's birth certificate and his mother's identity

document. On Monday, the body of a boy believed to be Miguel, was found at a site near Phoenix, north of Durban. According to Missing Children South Africa, the alarming reality is that in South Africa one child goes missing every five hours.

Woman attacked in Darnall By Xpress Reporter

A woman was severely injured on Monday morning this week after a man allegedly attacked her with a cane knife in her home in the Darnall area just outside KwaDukuza. It is alleged that a single attacker gained entry through the kitchen. When the victim noticed the presence of the assailant, she flung herself in front of the

attacker to protect her child from harm. KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson, Constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo said they believe that the attacker and the victim had an argument prior to the attack. “A suspect entered the farm in the Darnall area, where he brutally attacked the woman with a cane knife on Monday morning. The victim sustained injuries on

her right arm and left eye and was taken to hospital for medical attention. Police were provided with all the details of the attacker as he's believed to be a farm worker. A case of attempted murder has been opened for investigation at KwaDukuza SAPS. The police are still searching for the suspect who fled the scene after the incident,” said Khuzwayo.

iLembe responds to Letter to the Editor A Letter to the Editor titled “KwaDukuza and iLembe Municipality” appeared in the Xpress Times issue dated 29 August 2018. iLembe Municipality has issued the following response: • The number of leaks in the KwaDukuza area is as a result of old infrastructure in particular areas, namely, Warrenton, Shakaville, Doesburg, Glenhills, Lot 16,Lindelani,Gledhow and Zamani. • If you cast your mind back we had the similar situation in Stanger Manor, Blythedale, Zinkwazi, High Ridge and CBD. • Ilembe implemented a mains replacement project which replaced all the infrastructure in the abovementioned areas. The immediate result from this programme was the reduction in leaks and elimination of water supply shortages in the areas. This

programme is still continuing but unfortunately the budgets are limited and have to be spread throughout the district in areas like Mandeni and Ndwedwe. • The municipality has prioritised all the outstanding areas in KwaDukuza that still have old infrastructure. • The reservoir overflow is as a result of not having telemetry to be able to view the levels and be able to react timeously should the reservoir level rise to the brim. The old pumping main and its fragile nature does not give us the option of installing a pressure regulated system to stop the pumps should the reservoir level fill up. Such pressure regulated system will result to frequent bursts on the Warrenton pumping mains which in turn will result to endless water shortages in the area. • The municipality is

currently rolling out a telemetry system in the KwaDukuza area. Service provider is on site finalising data collection with the aim of smoothening the implementation. • Leaks and illegal connections are dealt with as they are discovered. It is true there is a huge backlog of both leaks and illegal connections and the municipality is in the process of beefing up its human resources to deal with same. • The consumer wrote to the Municipality during the tabling and adoption of the Budget for 2018/2019. His correspondence was acknowledged and replied to. It must be noted that IDM is aware of the water losses and is receiving attention on a daily basis. The comment that this matter cannot be resolved in a single financial year is valid, as this challenge is not as a result of

leaks which arose in the last 12 months. Rather, this has occurred over a number of years and therefore cannot addressed in a single year. There are programmes to deal with water leaks and the repair thereof and with constrained resources the municipality is doing its best to normalize the situation. It should further be noted that losses also occur through vandalism. In so far as illegal connection there are also programs to deal with this across the District. The media is invited to these programs and can the document and disseminate the efforts to curb illegal connections. • The matter was looked at during the budget process which took place during March May 2018 and as part of the consultation process undertaken during budget and IDP roadshows held during this process,

Depression continues to plague the people Our people within the KwaDukuza Municipality have been wrestling with this most silent killer, depression, for decades now. Learners through suicide in secondary schools, adults through hanging themselves are but some of the tragic stories told with letters found of the now dead victim giving a voice to their problem. Our local nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) as well as the Stanger Provincial Hospital have even advertised free help in the past during the heinous time that suicides increased. However, people also go through depression for years as if it were normal until triggers like panic attacks, anxiety disorders and even epilepsy knock them off the pedestal. A reminder to the people that experience prolonged sadness or feel like they need to talk to someone is to please visit the psychology department at your nearest hospital. Remember that visiting a psychologist DOES NOT MEAN you are MAD.

sanitation charges and tariffs were showcased at these meetings and consumers were in agreement with this method. At all the meetings held across the District, no objections were received from the community or business in this regard. • The period July 2016 to June 2017 had no queries regarding sanitation billing, the period July 2017 to June 2018 had some adjustments to business consumers accounts which were duly corrected. • Should any individual consumer still have queries regarding their account, the Municipality must be contacted in order to address such query. • The Post Office had a protracted strike which was only resolved about a month ago, thus may have impacted on the delivery of statements. The Municipality urges consumers who has access to

email to provide your email account details to the Finance Department. The account statement can then be sent to these consumers in this manner. The facility of receiving statements at the Municipal Offices is also available to consumers. • When prepaid meters come faulty, these are converted to conventional, a new meter is not fitted. Prepaid meters that are functional are not converted. The reason for conversion is track the consumption of the consumer. If this is not done it further added to water losses and lost revenue. At this point in time Council uses both conventional and prepaid meters to provide water to consumers. Council has taken lessons from prepaid meters and will continue to research solutions to using the prepaid metering system in a targeted manner.

Thank you note from the Xulu and extended family The Xulu and the Makhanya Families would like to thank everyone for the support, the prayers and the visits during the time of bereavement when they lost the head of the family, Sir Sidumo Patrick Xulu, whom they laid to rest on the 25th August 2018. It has indeed been a trying time for the "no longer” so big a family; and a huge reminder of the lost lives of the their late children in the past years. The sincere appreciation comes from deep within since that time; it has never been ignored! Your prayers and messages are still giving us strength to go on and be strong. Great appreciation goes to all our relatives, the nurses and doctors at the Stanger hospital for the care and patience; the beloved neighbours who kept an eye and constantly helped both Mr Sidumo and Mrs Makho Xulu when faced with the prolonged illness, weakened and deteriorating health during the absence of their surviving children due to distant work. It is well acknowledged. The dear family friends who never gave up on making those calls and visits; the ward 18 councillor, Mr L. Yingwana and family for the support they gave throughout; the Matsana and the Nakene families for the love and support; the Stanger Holy Rosary

I was livid...he had reversed into my car, I was frustrated... all the red-tape and bureaucracy. I had to report my tale to the police, I thought my world was collapsing... until I saw him...after two decades! Handcuffed, leg shackles, old worn- out clothes Distraught ! dishevelled, unkempt hair A hopeless, forlorn, despondent figure... Selvan...my ex-student... I could not believe it! The quietest boy in the class, ever- cheerful. Nobody knew what anguish hid in those eyes He saw me... cringed and tossed a hint of a smile and moved his shy gaze... I also looked away A few tears welled up in my eyes. Had I failed him...had we failed him? Whoever it was...society had failed Selvan ! He gave me a final doleful glance as if he meant to say 'I'm sorry sir' for turning out this woeful way.' As he was jostled roughly into a dingy room. The desk officer shouted in front of all 'These losers are hooked on drugs, And hang around with nothing to do!' Had I failed him? Had his parents failed him? I knew that we had all failed poor Selvan. As I walked to my car I reflected on what I saw. My concern was frivolous compared to his life. Here I was whinging over a petty incident while this young man had so much to conquer. (Be grateful for what you HAVE before it turns to what you HAD !) Ismail Asmal

KDDA want to thank the Quartz management under Pravesh Harryprasad for the newly designed darts Arena. KDDA Tournament Director, Nine Pillay thanked The Quartz management for an outstanding new look and display of the venue. Tonight, the Association will host the Late Dilley Pukree Singles.

The International Shotokan Karate Federation of Glenhills alongside Glenhills ward Councillor Rabi Singh, gave back to the community by planting trees this spring. Councillor Singh in conjunction with the local ISKF karate club planted 5 trees outside the Glenhills Multi-purpose Centre on Saturday, 1 September 2018. This was an aim to educate the students of the importance of trees and protecting the environment and our eco-system as well as to beautify the local community facility. “I am very pleased to see the youth, especially at such a young age getting involved in their community and assisting to keep our environment vibrant and beautiful' said Councillor Singh. Sensei Kuben Pillay, Instructor of the ISKF Glenhills Dojo would like to thank Councillor Singh for the support and his presence during the planting of the trees and the words of inspiration passed on to the karate students. ISKF Stanger does it again at the 28th ISKF National Championships championships. Senseis' Tarzan Naicker, Johnny Pillay and Kuben Pillay said "We are proud of all the karatekas that put in the hard training and dedication in the preparation for the championships and the karatekas were rewarded accordingly. However training does not stop and we

will be working even harder in preparation for the 2019 National Championships which will be held in Gauteng" All three instructors agree that with the ever increasing crime rate and drug abuse in the Country, having skills in self defence is essential. “In addition to self defence,

karate teaches one selfawareness and confidence, discipline, respect, good behaviour, life values and good health which will assist individuals in achieving goals in all aspects of life. We encourage the youth and community members join us in training and reap the benefits of this amazing sport,” said the Senseis.

"On behalf of the instructors, club management, coaching staff, parents, and fellow karatekas, congratulation to all participants. A big thank you to the instructors and Club managers of the dojo for all the preparation and dedication for the championships”. The ISKF Stanger dojo

trains on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm to 6.30pm The Glenhills Dojo trains on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5pm to 6.30pm.
