Mayor speaks out on recent protests FIRM STANCE: The Honourable KDM Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu briefing media from Ilembe and eThekwini on service delivery protest at the KwaDukuza Municipal library on Wednesday, 27 April 2016
By Xpress Reporter
T
he KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor, Executive committee members, Heads of Department and Councillors briefed the media at the CBD municipal library on Wednesday, 27 April 2016 -regarding the spate of recent violent protests. “We convene this special briefing to clarify Council's position on the recent and on-going demonstrations within KwaDukuza Municipality's area of jurisdiction,” said Mayor Mthembu. He said the reason which made him call a special engagement was through the experience of his office being inundated with queries relating to the ongoing public activities and this week, him taking a decision to engage the media at a “more involved level” so that there was clarity on the position of Council on such matters. “As leaders of local government, we are in a very critical time and under severe pressure as we are approaching the local government elections.
“Illegal protests are in nature, costly, they pose a threat to personal security, affect the economy, education, primary healthcare and emergency services amongst all that can be mentioned. They are a great inconvenience,” said Mthembu. Rail traffic is vulnerable to interruptions, on reason that railway lines run through some of the areas affected by protest actions. Primary healthcare clinics are not able to operate during public protests, which consequently leave the frail and infirm without medical support. “Such protests are of cause a public feature which deserves the greatest condemnation without reservations.” In the last few months, KwaDukuza Municipality has experienced various community protests which have led to public and private property being damaged by the protesters. The Mayor said that “violent protest cannot bring about change.” “We are a caring and listening government. I want to make it clear that it is Continued on page 4

Ilembe health awareness march Ilembe Municipality officials took part in a march from Stanger Hospital to the KwaDukuza taxi rank regarding the removal of backstreet abortion adverts
pasted on the KwaDukuza Town. It took place on Tuesday, 26 April 2016. The iLembe Councillors, Health Department officials, Civil Society, SAPS and
Ilembe Public Works were part of the program aimed to inform communities that abortion MUST only be done at hospitals. The march started at Stanger Hospital
where chanting and removing of illegal abortions adverts in KwaDukuza town reverberated. Ilembe District Department of Health
Manager, Dr. Sthembele Vikilahle handed over memorandum to iLembe District Mayor and SAPS KwaDukuza station commander. The Tuberculosis (TB) Day commemoration event was held at Nkobongo sport ground after some of the teamswere doing door to door TB blitz in the area. 24 March is World TB Day, but it was commemorated on 26 April 2016 at Ilembe. The Ilembe Mayor, Councillor Sibusiso Welcome Mdabe emphasized that people must not default on their medication.
“People must check their status because mostly TB goes with HIV. People must use the available services to the government to do anything. Stop using illegal medication. Abortion can be done only at hospital nowhere else,” he said. This is worldwide the third highest incidence of any country after India and China, and the incidence has increased by over 100%”. TB is curable but it need someone who would not default, said Dr. Sifiso Mtshali - the health department HOD in KwaZulu Natal.

Stanger Heights residents under seige

By Xpress Reporter
A group of approximately 30 people took to protesting in the Stanger Heights area on Wednesday, 27 April 2016. According to residents and then motorists who frequently drive through the area, protesters blockaded the roads by placing a bonfire as well as broken bottle pieces. The reason for the actions, according to protesters, was due to political sway in terms of awarding jobs for the Clover Road resurfacing project. According to a group of disgruntled protestors that visited the Xpress Times office on Tuesday, this week, the overseers of the project “only hired friends.” As local elections draw closer, the common folk who want to put food on tables or live pay cheque to pay cheque are caught up in politicking strategies that makes employment a party favour or faux pas.

HOPE: The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) hosted a Prayer Breakfast for Pastors and Christian Leaders on Freedom Day to pray for the challenges confronting KwaDukuza and surrounding areas. The event was held at Thilo's Function Venue in the industrial area of KwaDukuza. Speaking to the pastors present, local ACDP Councillor, Pastor Nel Sewraj stated: “After various incidents of unrest in Glenhills, Isithebe and other areas, the ACDP sought to host a prayer to counter these negative elements in our society. We recognize that politics itself is insufficient to arrest the decay of society. The prayer breakfast was a great success and a good work was accomplished in the spirit. We appreciate the support of local pastors and churches in this endeavour.”

LOTARE news
LOTARE held its Council Meeting on Friday, 22 April at the Stanger Manor Community Hall. Members were addressed by Dr Yavische Reddy, an ophthalmologist practising at the Alberlito Hospital. Her topic was "Basic Eye Care" and members were taken through a slide presentation highlighting the defects caused by illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol. The talk was appropriate as most of the diseases affecting the eye were pertinent to the old age such as glaucoma and cataracts. She will be holding a free screening for the retirees on one Monday and one Friday in the month of May. Members will be informed of the dates. The calendar of events for the rest of the term is as follows: • 18 May: Games and Social Afternoon/Evening followed by supper at the Darnall Country Club. Cost is R95 p.p. Transport is an additional R20. Monies to be paid to the Treasurer by 6 May. • 10 June: Mothers' and Fathers' Day Treat at the Stanger Manor Hall commencing at 10h00. • 10 June: Special Council Meeting to discuss arrangements for the Retirees' Rendezvous commencing at 9h00. • 8 July: Games Day and Council Meeting at the Stanger Manor Hall commencing at 9h30 followed by Lunch. Cost is R35 p.p. Attendance to be confirmed by 24 June. Members to diarise these dates and make payments to the treasurers promptly.

NEWSWORTHY: World Press Freedom Day was observed on Tuesday, 3 May 2016
By Xpress Reporter
World Press Freedom Day was observed on Tuesday, 3 May to inform the international community that freedom of the press and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights. This day reminds people that many journalists brave death or face jail to bring daily news to the public. It is an opportunity to: • celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom • assess the state of press freedom throughout the world • defend the media from attacks on their independence • pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Many communities, organizations and individuals take part in this day through various events such as art exhibitions, dinners featuring keynote speakers, and awards nights to honour those who risked their lives to bring news to the world. World Press Freedom Day was established by the General Assembly

of the United Nations in December 1993 as an outgrowth of the Seminar on Promoting an Independent and Pluralistic African Press. This seminar took place in Namibia in 1991 and led to the adoption of the Windhoek Declaration on Promoting Independent and Pluralistic Media. The Windhoek Declaration called to establish, maintain and foster an independent, pluralistic and free press. It emphasised the importance of a free press for developing and maintaining democracy in a nation, and for economic development. Although World Press Freedom Day has only been celebrated since 1993, it has much deeper roots in the United Nations. Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration on Human Rights states that everyone “has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers”.

Stangerite at unveiling of Mandela statue
HISTORIC: Ambassador Ashraf Suliman seen with Musa Hadeed (Mayor of Ramallah) and Layla Ghanem (Governor of Ramallah)
Stangerite and Ambassador to Palestine, Ashraf Suliman was present at the unveiling of a statue of former president Nelson Mandela in the west bank city of Ramallah recently. Ambassador Ashraf Suliman said South Africa had enhanced its strategic relationship with Palestine. An imposing figure, Nelson Mandela is universally admired and in
Ramallah on the West Bank in Palestine, it is no different. “Celebrating Freedom Day in this beautiful city of Ramallah today is significant and historic. Unveiling the statue of a leader of our people and an icon of the global community, the late Dr Nelson Mandela to my mind, gives hope and aspiration to this gallant nation to attain their freedom and independence,” said
Suliman in a watershed moment. Madiba's courage and persistence in the fight against apartheid, as well as his support for Palestinian human rights, have made him a much revered figure in t h e s e q u a r t e r s . The Ramallah Municipality laid out the red carpet as they hosted Palestinian President Mahmood Abbas, dignitaries, executives and VIPs, at the unveiling in Ramallah's latest landmark, Nelson Mandela Square, in the prominent At-Tir neighbourhood. The six-metre bronze statue of the world famous freedom fighter is a gift from the City of Johannesburg to the City of Ramallah, and a project close to the hearts of mayors Musa Hadeed and Parks Tau, who are both committed to a firm friendship between the cities. South Africa's Ambassador to Palestine, Ashraf Suliman said the presence of the delegation from the City of Johannesburg was indicative of the importance South Africa, at all levels of government and people, accords to the unique relationship between the countries.
“Allow me to also recognize the presence of A d v o c a t e F A D WA BARGHOUTI, who launched the campaign “ F R E E M A R WA N BARGHOUTI and all political prisoners,” in South Africa and in particular, Robben Island wherein President Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 27 years said Suliman. The Ambassador also said that South Africa had enhanced its strategic relationship with Palestine, and that President Zuma and President Abbas consulted each other on an on-going basis as do both ministries of foreign affairs. Solidarity knows no boundaries or even geography. SA's destiny is tied to the people of Palestine. SA's liberation and humanity is tied to the Palestinians. Madiba's statue in the centre of Ramallah will be a daily reminder to the people of Palestine t h a t indeed, t h e i r intifada is SA's too.

A small mouse crept up to a sleeping lion. The mouse admired the lion's ears, his long whiskers and his great mane. The little mouse climbed up onto the lion's tail, ran across its back, slid down its leg and jumped off of its paw. The lion awoke and quickly caught the mouse between its claws. "Please," said the mouse, "let me go and I'll come back and help you someday." The lion laughed, "You are so small! How could you ever help me?" The lion laughed so hard he had to hold his belly! The mouse jumped to freedom and ran until she was far, far away. The next day, two hunters came to

the jungle. They went to the lion's lair. They set a huge rope snare. When the lion came home that night, he stepped into the trap. He roared! He wept! But he couldn't pull himself free. The mouse heard the lion's pitiful roar and came back to help him. The mouse eyed the trap and noticed the one thick rope that held it together.
She began nibbling and nibbling until the rope broke. The lion was able to shake off the other ropes that held him tight. He stood up free! The lion turned to the mouse and said, "Dear friend, I was foolish to ridicule you for being small. You helped me by saving my life after all!”

• A woman noticed her husband standing on the bathroom scale, sucking in his stomach. “Ha! That's not going to help,” she said. “Sure, it does,” he said. “It's the only way I can see the numbers.” • A guy is sitting at home when he hears a knock at the door. He opens the door and press times sees a snail on the porch. He picks up the snail and throws it as far as he can. Three years later there's a knock on the door. He opens it and sees the same snail. The snail says: 'What the hell was that all about?' • A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats and pigs, the husband asked sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?" "Yep," the wife replied, "in-laws." • A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer. 'This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it you.' The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, 'Which do you want, son?' The boy takes the quarters and leaves. 'What did I tell you?' said the barber. 'That kid never learns!' Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. 'Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?' The boy licked his cone and replied, 'Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!’

• Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them. • This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. • Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible. • Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions. • My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.
Singles darts champion, Jerry Govender (R) with runner up Paddy Padayachee
Jerry Govender was in splendid form when he was crowned Terrence and family singles darts champion hosted by the KwaDukuza Darts Association last Wednesday at the Quartz Conference Centre. Govender cleaned swept Jerry Arunachellam 2-0 in the quarter finals to set up a semi-final clash against Terence Pillay who beat Nine Pillay by the same margin in the other quarter final clash. Govender's prolific form continued when he once again threw precision darts to outclass Pillay 2-0 to clinch a place in the final. Meanwhile, in the top half of the draws, Paddy Padayachee had a hard fought 2-1 victory over the rampant Charlie Pillay whilst Darrel Shanmagum had the better of Jason Moodley beating him 2-0 to book a place against Padayachee. However, Padayachee proved too strong for Shanmagum beating him 2-0 to set up a mouth-watering final. Although the two veterans played precision darts in the final, it was Govender who ended up victorious with a 2-0 win to clinch championship. Tonight sees the resumption of the Neelan's Auto darts league at the Quartz Conference Centre.
• If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. • Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive. • We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves. • In the practice of tolerance, one's enemy is the best teacher. • We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection.

THINGS HAPPEN!! Client: Dr Daudie can you briefly discuss to us how your magic ring works? Daudie: First and foremost, the magic ring was discovered in Egypt around 400 - 800BC by the Pharaoh. When you put the ring on the finger, it produces a fluid which circulates in the blood stream, it recharges the whole system with its powers and diseases are destroyed. Not only that but also it will affect your stay and change your lifestyle. It gives you success in love, boost business, make you attractive i.e. Attractive to the opposite sex for love and protect you in your journey. Furthermore, it will prevent you from being fooled by people and you will be capable of performing miracles. More still, it will protect you from evil powers & witchcraft i.e. Nothing can destroy your life any how and it can make lover faith i.e. Make him/ her love you alone. Gambling, like lotto, casino and machine play, 100% is guaranteed when the magic ring is used properly. Last but not the least, it will give you promotion in any field you want and it can be used to win court cases that is if you have a case to answer. That also apply's to student in an examination, there will be no difficult questions. Briefly that's how a magic ring works. Contact: DR DAUDIE

Water tariff, 34% increase in two years
The proposed water and sewer increase of 17% is pushing communities into poverty and into further debt that is becoming unaffordable. In two years the increase is 34% something is gone horribly wrong at ILembe council. It was our sustained fight together with community support that signed up 2491 petition that saw the dropping of 6% increase in the last budget. However ILembe still applied the 17 % cost reflective tariff. Although 17 % is proposed its simply out of line, inflation is hovering around 6% it does not give ILembe the right to steamroll the increase due to their incapacity to manage their affairs efficiently and effectively. Water loss, poor maintenance on infrastructure, relying heavily on grant funding, escalating of staff cost are possible contributors of the proposed high increase. It is clear ILembe has low cash reserves and cannot absorb some of the increase coupled with some communities not paying or simply accounts are written off in millions. We need an active community raising their concerns or else we will be forced to pay way
above inflation and is beginning to hurt regardless of whether you are poor or rich. Let us stand together and demand tariff are set at a rate that is AFFORDABLE to all. Cllr Madhun Sobram Sing DA Caucus Leader KwaDukuza of the constitution must be challenged in the interest of our democracy and the accountability we have to our people. The narrative that has grown around the issue of “state capture” should be concern to all responsible and caring South Africans, particularly those of us who have accepted the task to lead our people. We cannot afford to ignore the obvious impact these sentiments may have on our country and the resultant potential of undermining our moral authority. I believe if anyone who does not respect the constitution must be jailed. I feel it is no longer possible to remain quiet. Of primary concern to me is that this issue has a real danger of diverting attention away from the real and urgent challenges we face as a country. Therefore, I am saying South Africa slides into soap opera, we need honest leaders to save us. On the 3rd of August, make your vote, a real change in your wards and to make South Africa a better place to live. God bless South Africa. Roy Naidoo (DA Candidate) Ward 2 Darnall

“How do the authorities pass contracted work”
Irate Sunny Park residents have lashed out at the don't-care-a-damn attitude of officials. For the past four months, a leaking water pipe has caused the destruction of the road which runs through the area. “Officials claim they could not see the water leakage yet a blind person would have found the source. It was learnt that the leak they were looking for was obviously not located as they were looking in Tensing Climb for the source of the problem. When the matter finally came to a head the officials worked the entire Monday night and the whole of Tuesday to repair the problem. However, on Wednesday the problem was worse than before as water was gushing out at a higher and faster rate than before. It was reliably learnt that the repairmen had not fitted a pressure valve and had replaced the damaged pipe with a much narrower piece causing pressure build-up resulting in the loss of much needed water. On Thursday morning these incompetent repairmen got it right. The question raised is how do the authorities pass contracted work and who pays for the follow up repairs? Asked a resident. It is just a matter of days before this problem recurs. In the meantime the area has been left in a sorry state with soil dumped over the place of the IN AID OF FUNDS FOR GLENDALE HINDU SATH SANGH SABHA all repairs. KSST bounce back to winning ways
KwaDukuza Primary School learner, Niren Lochan double wicket (Under 13) was voted the best batsman and best player.
After losing their opening two matches in round one of the EZE's Electrical Premier league (hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association) KSST bounced back to winning ways last Thursday when they beat the youthful Warriors Sport 2-0. KSST previously lost their opening two games to Grove End and Randsons. It was a fixture filled with fireworks as both these teams had lost their opening two games and were seriously eyeing victory. Both sets was evenly poised by KSST clinched the first set 25-20. The second set was a titanic battle for superiority as both sides tried to ground out victory. However, KSST dug deep in their reserves against Warriors to grind out a narrow 26-24 victory. Randsons dream run from the start of the season came crushing down when they came up against reigning champions Grove End. In another hard fought game, Grove End gritted out a 25-25-20, 25-23 victory to occupy sole
position at the summit of the league table. KwaDukuza Volleyball Association Fixtures KZN Car Paints Specialist K.O. MAMA ALISHA THANKS MAMA ALISHA ITS REALLY HAPPENING NOW WITH YOU I am Carl from Ballito and am here to testify to my fellow South Africans about a miracle I encountered when I visited MAMA ALISHA to help me fix my financial situation. I was almost left homeless as I had lost my home and car to fake traditional healers. On my visit she gave different ways of helping me and chose the magic wallet that brings 25000 everyday and paid her 70 000 every week from the money I made from the magic wallet. I told my cousin Petros about it and he too chose the rats that bring money in the house after which he got 40 000 and paid 9000. Mama Alisha. I know it's the same way you can be helped you have to see to believe so visit her or call her 0710223640

Team Olympic members completed the race in excellent times
I am Cliff from Umhlanga. I came to know about Mama Alisha from Auntie Merina who lives in Stanger and had previously visited her with a financial problem and it had been fixed. I had lost all my money, cars, business some of which was left to me by my late parents. When things went real bad. My wife told me to go to hell and started having affairs looking out for rich men and when I confronted her about it she told me go to hell, left me alone and went. I suffered for almost 2 years but meeting Mama Alisha rose me up again. She gave me a magic wallet with which I could get money daily inside my house. I opened up a new business worth 2 million rands bought 2 new cars and when my wife heard that I am up again she wants me back, thinking of forgiving her but am not sure. Only that she is the mother of my 3 kids. I can forgive her for only that. If Alisha bought my life back to normal, I know she can help you too.
Team Olympic members participated in the 42km Deloitte Cycle Race this past Sunday. The race commenced from Lifestyle Centre in Ballito and ended at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Leicester captain Wes Morgan hailed the Premier League champions as "a band of brothers" as they celebrated their astonishing title triumph on Monday. Claudio Ranieri's side were confirmed as kings of English football for the first time in their 132-year history after second placed Tottenham's 2-2 draw at Chelsea ended their hopes of overhauling the leaders.
Leicester's incredible rise from 5 000-1 pre-season outsiders to best in the Premier League has captivated millions of fans around the world and Morgan was quick to pay tribute to his team-mates for making the seemingly impossible into a glorious reality. "It's the best feeling of my career and I couldn't be prouder that it's as part of this team," Morgan said. "Everyone's worked so hard for this, nobody believed we could do it, but here we are, Premier League champions and deservedly so. 12B Chief Albert Luthli Street, Stanger "I've never Opp Olympic Car Sales Tel : 032 551 4215/18 known a spirit CV Service like the one Joints between these boys, we're like brothers. believed it would come to this." Morgan, a previously unheralded journeyman defender, will become the most unlikely captain to ever lift the Premier League trophy when the Foxes have their title party at home to Everton on Saturday. "Saturday can't come quickly enough. I can't wait to get my hands on the trophy," he said. Aside from Leicester's tremendous team-spirit, the blistering form of England striker Jamie Vardy was the most crucial component of his club's charge to the title. Vardy's 22 goals put Leicester in position to take the trophy just a few years after he was playing in the non-league and only 12 months after the Foxes narrowly avoided relegation. "It's an unbelievable feeling. I've never known anything like it," Vardy said. "We were scrapping to stay in the league last season and on Saturday we'll be lifting the trophy. "That gives you an idea of how much hard work has gone into this season from every single player and member of staff. "It's the biggest achievement in the history of a great club and we all feel privileged to be part of it. "It's even more special to have done it with these lads. Every minute of hard work we've put in on the training pitch has been worth it for this moment.”
