“Don't blame TB or Covid” MEC Simelane KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Ms Nomagugu Simelane has urged people who have TB or COVID 19 symptoms not to waste time by suspecting others of bewitching them; but to rather seek treatment early in order to improve their chances of survival. The MEC was speaking at a commemorative World TB Day community outreach programme at Thembeni Sportsfield, at KwaDukuza, where she also expressed concern that KwaZuluNatal was still the epicentre of TB in the country. The programme, which was also attended by Ilembe Deputy District Mayor Cllr Dolly Shandu, was held under the World TB Day theme: “The Clock is Ticking: Let us Find, Treat, and End TB,” and took place under Alert Level 1 regulations, which restrict the number of outdoor gatherings to 250. One of the highlights of the day was the unveiling of a brand new Mobile X-Ray Clinic that is able to produce TB results in record time of 15 minutes. MEC Simelane has vowed that such a service, which is currently only available at eThekwini and Ilembe, will be made available in other parts of the province. Although KwaZulu-Natal's TB notification rate has declined from the 1128 reported in 2010 to 410

per 100 000 population recorded last year, the province's statistics are still more than twice what the World Health Organisation declares a crisis (200 per 100 000). In her speech, the MEC issued a warning about the new twin burden of COVID 19 and TB that was afflicting society, and called on the public to help reduce it by taking preventative measures, as well as not delaying treatment when symptoms arise. “As we should know, Tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19 are both infectious diseases that attack primarily the lungs. Both diseases have similar symptoms such as cough, fever and difficulty with breathing. However, TB has a longer incubation period with a slower onset of disease. The World Health Organisation tells us that, it is anticipated that people who are sick from both TB and COVID-19 may have poorer treatment outcomes, especially if TB treatment is interrupted. Multi-disciplinary operation yields positive results

Three killed on the N2 accident Three people were killed during an accident that occurred on the N2 on Saturday night. According to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics responded to reports of a collision on the N2 Southbound, vicinity Mtunzini off ramp, “On arrival of paramedics, it was established that a vehicle had rear-ended another vehicle, resulting in one of the vehicles igniting. Three persons were entrapped in one of two vehicles and all three succumbed to their injuries. The jaws of life were used to free their trapped bodies. The driver of the second vehicle absconded from scene. Condolences to those affected,” said IPSS Medical Rescue. In a separate incident, on 01 April 2021, two vehicles

Groutville community is reeling in shock following the break-in and malicious damage to Groutville Secondary School furnishing and equipment. It was reported that on 02 April 2021, six suspects gained entry to the school. Two security personnel were beaten up and handcuffed, and then the suspects proceeded to remove all electronic equipment from the school. They took away an undisclosed amount of cash from the school's petty cash. KwaDukuza SAPS Communications Officer Priya Nunkumar said the matter is being investigated by KwaDukuza SAPS, “I can confirm that a robbery took place on the 2 April 2021 at Groutville High School. A case of Business Robbery was opened at Kwadukuza SAPS and the matter is being investigated by KwaDukuza SAPS Detectives,” said Priya Nunkumar. It is also alleged that suspects used a bolt cutter, cordless driller, metal cutter and a four pound hammer to gain entry. Stolen items were desktops (8), projector, Televisions (4), laptop (2) and the school sound system. Most of the stolen items were essential in improving the students' academic performance. Authorities have appealed to the public to help bring the culprits to justice, any with information is urged to come forward.

Muslims throughout the world begin their month long fast of Ramadaan upon sighting of the moon either on Monday 6 May or Tuesday 7 May 2021. The edifice of Islam is based on five pillars: lman (belief), Salah (prayer), Saum (fasting), Zakat (poor-due) and Haj (pilgrimage to Ka'bah). These five pillars, which constitute the fundamental principles of Islam embracing all the essential factors of ethical laws, evolve into a practical code of life for humanity. They are unique and unrivalled in their spirit and actions and redolent of a spiritual flair for mankind. Fasting during the holy month of Ramadaan is a religious obligation for all Muslims. The Holy Quran says: “O Believers, fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may attain piety” (Surah Al Baqarah:183). Ramadaan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, rotates round all the seasons of the year and completes a full circle in 36 years, thus allowing the believers to observe fasting under all climatic conditions. Fasting means abstaining not only from eating, drinking and indulging in sexual activity with the spouse from pre-dawn to sunset, but from all kinds of evils and useless activities. In fact, it is the month of seeking God Almighty's Pleasure and praying to Him for one's Salvation. The month of Ramadaan is not like any other month; its purpose is to rid man of those habits which he has accumulated throughout the rest of the year. It is a month that prepares man for the remaining eleven months by teaching him discipline and self control. Thus, God Almighty has made some acts which are beloved to man, like eating, drinking and fulfilling one's desires from dawn till dusk, Haraam. If man can control these desires in this month, which are usually permissible for

him, then he can surely control himself from other desires which are not permissible throughout the remaining months. This blessed month has been sent by God Almighty to His bondsmen so that they can create a connection and draw closer to God Almighty by reaping the many rewards that lie in this month. A person who has been given the opportunity to be present in this month can take this as a sign that

The Holy Prophet (PBUH ) has clearly stated: “Whoever does not give up lying and evil actions, then God Almighty is not in need of his leaving his food and drink” [Saheeh al-Bukhari]. It is worth-mentioning a Hadeeth of the Holy Prophet (PBUH ) here which says, “If my followers realize what Ramadaan really is, they would wish that the whole year be Ramadaan.”

importance of this holy month and perform more prayers, do good deeds and win their salvation from God Almighty. Let us receive the full benefits of this month by the grace of Almighty and the blessings of His Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).It is obligatory for all Muslims to fast in the whole month of Ramadaan. However, those who cannot execute the Ramadaan fast due to old age, permanent disability, fatal disease etc; have to offer Fidya (compensation) for each compulsory fast, not kept, as 2 Kg bread flour or its cash equivalent or feeding a poor person two full meals a day. If a Muslim could not fast in Ramadaan owing to Shariah (religious law of Islam) justification, the missed out fasts have to be completed as early as possible. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) said, “This (Ramadaan) is the month of compassion”. Muslims give Zakaat (another pillar of Islam) in this month. Giving Zakaat means “giving a specified percentage on certain properties, to certain classes of needy people”. There are two ways of giving Zakaat. 1. By showing others so that others can also follow the suit; and 2. By hiding from others, for Allah knows the hearts. There are certain prioritisations considered while giving Zakaat. The closer the relative, the neighbour, the friends and the others in that group of needy people the more right they deserve in receiving Zakaat. Fitrah is religious alms paid on the day when Muslims break the fasting period at the end of Ramadaan. Giving of Fitrah is obligated to people who are obligated to give Zakaat. Fitrah in the form of cash is more preferable than that of kind. This way the poor persons can make best use of it by meeting their needs. Thus, Muslims put all efforts to accomplish righteousness in this month of Ramadaan with an objective to continue doing so, for the rest of the year.
