Municipality reaches out to vulnerable communities

HANDOVER: Ndwedwe Council Speaker Khonza Ngidi (far left) and Deputy Mayor Zandile Siwetu (second from right) together with officials and a beneficiary.

By Xpress Reporter

Ndwedwe Local Municipality has restored hope among people living with a disability, by donating new wheelchairs to ease their mobility difficulties. Ndwedwe Council Speaker Khonza Ngidi and Deputy Mayor Zandile Siwetu last week led a delegation comprising of officials from the Social

Cohesion Unit and members of the Disability Forum, to hand over the much needed assistive devices to those in need. Councillor Ngidi said the move was in response to the plea made by the vulnerable sector of the community, consisting of children and the elderly, for access to vital assistive devices. The delegation visited

Ward 18 (KwaMdladla), Ward 15 (Mzokhulayo) Ward 13 (eNtaphuka) and Ward 14 (KwaBhanoyi). The new wheelchairs were gratefully accepted by the beneficiaries. Ngidi says the delegation was observing strict Lockdown safety protocols to prevent the spread of Covid-19 as the handover programme unfolded.

'Second hand goods' campaign a success In attempts to raise awareness on the importance of registering a second good business at KwaDukuza SAPS, the station held a 'Second Hand Goods” awareness campaoign on Wednesday, 23 June 2021. The campaign was led by KwaDukuza SAPS Flash Unit together with Corporate Communications, in a media statement, Priya Nunkumar said a large amount of goods, such as: electronic gate batteries, jewellery, cellphones, vehicle parts, electric items from homes, which are taken in thefts, house breaking and house robberies are taken to local pawn shops and sold off, which causes a demand for stolen items, and an increase in theft and robberies, “The community are encouraged to tackle the sale of stolen goods by disrupting and dismantling the stolen goods market by making it impossible for thieves to sell items that were taken in thefts or robberies. By saying 'no' to stolen second hand goods, you are closing down the market for sales of stolen goods, which will halt thieves from selling stolen items, and cause thieves to

not be interested in stealing items for quick cash,” said Nunkumar “If you are in possession of an item which has been taken during a theft or robbery, or suspected to be stolen and if you are unable to give a satisfactory account of the possession of the items, you will be guilty of 'Section 36', and liable on conviction to the penalties which may be imposed on a conviction of theft. AL-Jama to request presidential pardon for JG Zuma

The Al Jama-ah political party says it will ask Justice and Correctional Services Minister, Ronald Lamola, to prepare a submission to President Cyril Ramaphosa to immediately grant former president Jacob Zuma a presidential pardon. Al Jama-ah leader, Ganief Hendricks, says the Constitutional Court should have only sent Zuma to jail if it was a unanimous decision. The majority decision of the ConCourt was for Zuma

to serve 15 months in prison for defying the court's order for him to appear before the State Capture Commission of Inquiry. In the minority judgment, two of the Constitutional Court judges, Leona Theron and Chris Jafta, wanted Zuma to be given a suspended sentence. Hendricks says Al Jama-ah is disappointed and says this was not a criminal matter, “The Al Jama-ah political party is shocked at the

decision by the Constitutional Court to send President Zuma to jail for 15 months. While different political parties and society will have different views, we feel it was important (that) the Constitutional Court should only have done that if it was a unanimous decision. And every member of the Constitutional Court has the same standing and so the principle of majority of one should certainly apply,” he said.

Official prices for fuel this month The Department of Energy has published the latest fuel price adjustments for July 2021, showing a hike in prices across the board. This is how fuel prices will change on Wednesday, 7 July 2021: • Petrol 95: increase of 26 cents per litre; • Petrol 93: increase of 29 cents per litre; • Diesel 0.05%: increase of 42 cents per litre; • Diesel 0.005%: increase of 41 cents per litre; • Illuminating Paraffin: increase of 36 cents per litre. Movement in prices is typically affected by two main factors international petroleum costs, and the movement in the rand/dollar exchange rate.

The average international product prices for petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin increased during the period under review, and the rand appreciated against the US dollar during the period under review, on average, when compared to the previous period.

KDM Crime Prevention Police enforce covid-19 regulations

CBD: In attempts to curb the spread of Covid-19, KwaDukuza Crime Prevention and Traffic Police were out in full-force on Thursday 01 July 2021 enforcing COVID safety measures around the CBD. This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa tightened lockdown restrictions last month, moving the country to Level 4 of lockdown. Police members patrolled the CBD on foot, visiting areas such as Post Office and Home Affairs, where people are always packed in queues.

Interpol issues Red Notices for Gupta brothers

WANTED: Atul Gupta, his brother Rajesh and their wives are wanted by the National Prosecuting Authority

Interpol has issued Red Notice international warrants for the Gupta brothers and their wives. The Guptas escaped from South Africa in 2018, as investigators were honing in on their activities, in relation to alleged state capture. The Investigative

Directorate (ID) of the National Prosecutions Authority has confirmed that it enlisted Interpol's assistance as it battles to bring the Guptas back to South Africa to stand trial, in connection with R25 million paid for a feasibility study to determine the viability of the

failed R288 million Estina dairy farm project. ID's head Hermione Cronje says the Red Notice warrants have been issued against Atul and Rajesh Gupta, and their wives Chetali and Arti. The Guptas are believed to be in the United Arab Emirates.

Former speaker vows to “fight for justice” By Xpress Reporter

Former speaker of KwaDukuza Municipality, Veli Luthuli, the daughter-inlaw of the late Nobel Prize laureate Inkosi Albert Luthuli, is determined to use her political clout to fight for justice. Luthuli is now a proportional representative (PR) councillor for Al Jamaah, a political party steeped in Islam. Luthuli recently joined Al Jama-ah after serving in the African National Congress (ANC) for a number of years. She says she made the decision to defect to the relatively unknown party after “falling in love with the way of life that Islam portrays”. “I will be fighting for justice for my people, and Al Jama-ah is my platform. I was influenced by a friend, a Muslim lady about the values of the Islamic faith, and I can say without a doubt that this

Stanger), Clairwood Hospital, as well as the Pietermaritzburg Royal Show Grounds; have been fullyfitted with oxygen, consisting of 361 points,” the Premier stated. Zikalala added that 15 000 healthcare professionals had been employed by the province, on a contractual basis, to beef up personnel at healthcare facilities. The new workers include nurses, administration staff, porters and cleaners, radiographers, clinical psychologists, audiologists and optometrists. The Premier expressed confidence that the province's oxygen capacity as well as the contingency measures that had been put in place should oxygen supplies run short would be enough to carry the province through the Deltadriven third wave. “We continue to make significant progress with the vaccination of both our senior citizens aged 60 and above, educators, as well as healthcare workers who could not be vaccinated during the first phase. As of the 28th of June 2021, we had vaccinated 416 967 senior citizens; 68 748 educators, as well as 130 546 health workers. The total number of senior citizens who are currently registered on the Electronic Vaccination Data System currently stands at 553 279, from a target of just over 955 000 that we need to vaccinate. “The number of vaccination sites that we have now prepared for the Pfizer vaccine is 359; whereas for educators, we have prepared 102 vaccination sites. All in all, we currently have 152 active sites for both vaccines,” Zikalala stated. Central to the success of the stricter measures announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa recently, is the need for enforcement and adherence. The Premier says the province's safety and security cluster is ready for the task. “Already the ProvJoint, which is a structure that integrates all law enforcement agencies, has met to respond to the new developments. The new plan is informed by experience and areas that previously have had challenges in terms of noncompliance with the regulations. In terms of this plan, the focus will be on residential areas, where there is generally high movement of people, and we will have operations throughout the province. Already, work is taking place in areas that have been identified as hotspots; but we will now be beefing-up the teams and our operations. “Let us continue with the fight to stay alive. Now is not the time to give up. Working together, we can defeat Covid-19,” he concluded.

England and Denmark set up Pitso Mosimane's Al semi-final clash at Euro 2020 Ahly send ominous warning to Kaizer Chiefs

Pitso Mosimane's Al Ahly side secured a comfortable away win over Smouha in the Egyptian Premier League to send an ominous warning to Kaizer Chiefs ahead of their CAF Champions League final showdown. The two sides will go headto-head in a highlyanticipated clash in the prestigious continental showpiece in Morocco on 17 July. Defending champions, Al Ahly have now sent an ominous warning that they may be finding their best form at a crucial stage of the season after securing a dominant 4-0 away win at Smouha. In-form striker Mohamed Sherif grabbed a brace to register his 16th and 17th goal of the season in 37 appearances in all competitions. As Hussein El Shahat and Ali Maaloul completed the scoring as Mosimane's side remained on track to defend their domestic title, after winning an incredible treble

last season. On the South African front, Kaizer Chiefs will be aiming to lift a historic CAF Champions League trophy in their first-ever campaign in the continental competition. Having already completed the 2020/2021 PSL

campaign, Chiefs will have gone over three weeks without a competitive fixture ahead of the final, while Mosimane's side will play two more league fixtures building up to their tie against the Soweto giants. Kick-off is at 21:00.

England crushed Ukraine 40 in Rome on Saturday to set up a Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark who continued their remarkable run by beating the Czech Republic in the last eight earlier. Harry Kane scored twice for England at the Stadio Olimpico while Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson also found the net as Gareth Southgate's side reached the semi-finals of a second consecutive major tournament. Now they are a step closer to claiming a first major international title since the 1966 World Cup and, with the remaining games in the tournament being played at Wembley, they are favourites to claim the trophy. Kane put England ahead inside four minutes and although Ukraine finished the first half strongly, Maguire headed in the second goal from a Luke Shaw free-kick within a minute of the second half starting. Kane scored again with another header, his third goal in two games coming from a Shaw cross, and Henderson came off the bench to head in his first

England goal on his 62nd cap. They have still not conceded a goal after five games at this European Championship and were certainly not affected by leaving Wembley, where they had played all their matches so far at the tournament, to come to Rome. An obligatory five-day quarantine for arrivals into Italy from the United Kingdom made it harder for England fans to attend the game, but many of the crowd of close to 12,000 were still supporting them. Now England will go back to Wembley for the semi-final on Wednesday against Denmark, with a crowd of around 60,000 set to attend as British authorities further relax restrictions despite a recent surge in coronavirus cases. The Danes continued their remarkable run since the trauma of Christian Eriksen's cardiac arrest in their opening defeat by Finland as they beat the Czech Republic 2-1. They are into the last four of a major tournament for the first time since winning the European Championship in 1992 after

first-half goals from Thomas Delaney and Kasper Dolberg in Baku. A defeat by Belgium followed the Finland game, but they have now scored 10 goals in three straight wins since then. Denmark made a dream start in Azerbaijan as Delaney headed home Jens Stryger Larsen's corner in the fifth minute. They doubled their advantage three minutes before half-time as Dolberg volleyed in Joakim Maehle's magnificent cross. The Czechs pulled one back in the 49th minute when Patrik Schick tucked Vladimir Coufal's cross into the bottom corner to grab his fifth goal of the tournament and move alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of the scoring charts. But Schick was substituted after suffering a muscle strain with 11 minutes remaining and Denmark held on. Italy and Spain faced off in Tuesday's first semi-final at Wembley (result unknown at time of going to print). Italy beat Belgium 2-1 in their quarter-final on Friday to extend their national-record unbeaten run to 32 matches.

South Africa capitalised on the misfiring power-hitters of the West Indies to claim a series-clinching 25-run victory in the final T20 International of their five-match contest at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada on Saturday. Defending a total of 168 for four, thanks to half-centuries from Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock, all the Proteas' main bowlers made significant strikes to limit the defending World T20 champions to 143 for nine despite a typically flamboyant 52 from opening batsman Evin Lewis. Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, who endured a hammering through the first four matches, bounced back with three wickets. Fellow pacer Kagiso Rabada, and seam bowling all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, playing in place of injured speedster Anrich Nortje, took two wickets each. However, the outstanding bowling effort was again produced by Tabraiz Shamsi, the left-arm wristspinner improving on his previous record economical figures in the last two matches by conceding just 11 runs through his four overs in claiming the wicket of Chris Gayle. He was the inevitable choice as 'Man of the Series' taking seven wickets across the five matches at the outstanding economy rate of four runs per over. West Indian hopes of coping with an increasingly challenging run-rate eventually rested on the shoulders of their captain Kieron Pollard. However he was hampered by a leg injury sustained when scampering a quick single and when Mulder removed Pollard and Andre Russell off successive deliveries in the 15th over, the match tilted heavily in favour of the visitors. For South Africa, it was a first T20 International series triumph for almost two years. It was also the first under the captaincy of Temba Bavuma and coaching stewardship of Mark Boucher.

"This is really a tremendous effort for our side, and especially for me in just my first T20 International, it is something to build on going forward," said Mulder. Pollard was bitterly disappointed with his team's failure yet again to chase down a moderate total. "It looks as if we haven't learnt much from these matches because we keep making the same mistakes, and that is the definition of insanity," said the captain. Next up for the home side is a fivematch series against Australia, starting next Friday in St Lucia. Earlier, Markram's highest T20 International score and another halfcentury from the consistent de Kock set the pace for South Africa. Markram's 70 off 48 balls with four sixes and three fours came as he and de Kock (60 off 42 balls with two sixes and four fours) put on 128 for the second wicket after Bavuma fell without scoring in the first over bowled by Fidel Edwards. That partnership was the highest for any wicket by South Africa in T20 Internationals against the West Indies. Bavuma had chosen to bat first on winning the toss, the first time a captain opted to do so in this series. It was a decision no doubt influenced by the tourists' failure to chase a target of 168 in the previous fixture two days earlier, a result which allowed the home side to pull level at 2-2. Despite the excellent platform provided by Markram and de Kock though, the innings lost momentum over the final ten overs, especially when Edwards separated the productive pair by having de Kock, who tallied 255 runs in five innings in the series, caught by Russell at long-on. Edwards' figures of two for 19 were the best for the West Indies bowlers with captain Pollard utilising seven bowling options, including himself, on a pitch where run-scoring was again increasingly difficult as the innings wore on.
