KwaDukuza commuters slapped with steep fare increases
KDM scores big in Financial Stability Index “We were able to rise above economic challenges affecting our fiscus in the middle of a global pandemic, the 2021 social unrest and we are yet again rising above the flood disaster which demands that we look at reprioritizing our budget. It is clear that we have well entrenched financial policies, and our budget is based on sound financial planning. This alone is a confirmation of our commitment to adhering to good budgetary practices, strict financial controls, and good revenue collection,” Nhaca said. KwaDukuza has done well over the years. From around 2004 onwards, we were under serious financial constraints and performing at the lowest levels in the country. In the 2014/2015 financial year, KwaDukuza scored 78. In local municipalities, a financial year is marked by a cycle period from 01 July until 30 June. In 2010, KDM had achieved the second position in the country. Taxi commuters in KwaDukuza are facing an unusually steep increase in taxi fares from the 1st of July 2022. The local taxi association has announced that fares for all local trips will go up by R2, as opposed to the usual R1 annual increase that commuters have grown accustomed to. This comes on the back of a warning by national taxi federations SANTACO and National Taxi Alliance that the skyrocketing fuel prices would impact adversely on taxi fares. The R2 increase by the local association means that for shortest trips, commuters will part with a whopping R13 per single trip. However SANTACO

maintains that this year's unusual increases are not meant to offset the impact of the high fuel prices. SANTACO spokesperson Bafana Magagula said recently that the taxi federation would always keep in mind that its commuters come from disadvantaged backgrounds. “It comes at a time when it's the time to implement those increases irrespective of the increases that were implemented on petrol that is not the reason why we are increasing. Maybe the only difference is that due to the petrol hike, the increases may be a bit sharper than and when I say sharper, I mean higher than expected, however, we still consider our commuters as coming from disadvantaged areas,” Magagula said.

Municipality provides relief for flood stricken learners By Xpress Reporter

On Monday this week, District Mayor Cllr Thobani Shandu led a high-powered municipal delegation to hand over 94 full sets of school uniforms and handsome grocery packs for learners from 22 schools around KwaDukuza, most of whom are currently still housed in community halls, following the devastation caused by floods. Accompanying the Mayor at the handover were his Deputy Cllr James Van Whye, the Council Speaker Cllr Dolly Shandu, the Municipal Manager Geoffrey Khumalo and iLembe Education
District Director Dr Musawenkosi Madondo. Cllr Van Whye assured the learners and their parents that the municipality would continue to stand in solidarity with the in their hour of need. He urged the learners to resist the temptation to sink into despondency amid the devastation that has visited them. Speaking on behalf of all the recipients, Kamahle Mtshelwa expressed her deepest felt appreciation to the municipality for coming to their rescue. “I have personal experience of the pain of losing everything you once possessed, due to the floods. I am one of those who lost everything. I am lucky to be alive and to be standing here. I would like to sincerely thank the municipality and the leaders involved for helping us in this matter,”
Director Dr Madondo said his message of close collaboration Mtshelwa said. MEC urges ANC leaders to be “in touch with people” WARNING: ANC PEC member Kwazi Mshengu
The KZN MEC for Education Kwazi Mshengu, who is also the member of the ANC's provincial executive committee (PEC), has urged ANC leaders to stay in touch with the people. Mshengu was speaking in his capacity as the ANC's PEC member, at the party's Monday Regional Forum held at Sibusisiwe Hall in
Mandeni, on Monday this week. Mshengu warned against the creeping tendency amongst ANC leaders to be distant from the people, and opting instead to focus on their own self interests. Mshengu raised his concern about how different members have devalued leadership by replacing it by
with pride. He said other ANC members demanded deployment in government and other leadership positions by using money as influence, while others threaten to be disruptive if they don't get elected. The MEC further emphasized that leadership should be earned and that constructive self-criticism should prevail among the rank and file of the ruling party. He further cautioned the ANC against being an inward looking organization. “ANC members now believe that everything should start with them and end with them. They focus on positions, rather than the interests of the people,” he said. The event was hosted by the ANC's General Gizenga Mpanza Region.
KDM says no to litter and illegal dumping
WASTE: KwaDukuza Municipality is ramping up educational and awareness campaigns on waste management
KwaDukuza Municipality in collaboration with the KZN Department of Economic Development Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) hosted a successful education and
awareness programme in Ward 12 at the Mbekamuzi Combined School, last week. The teams inculcated the culture of a KwaDukuza that is free from litter and illegal dumping as well as how this depends on every individual in the community playing their part, not only by
depositing of their waste correctly but also encouraging others to do the same. The municipality is planning to visit more schools as it ramps up its efforts of educating the people to practice best waste management handling.
Department encouraged by partnership with municipality Continued from Page 1 “As we stand here we feel encouraged because we know we are in the midst of leaders who have a great understanding about the plight of our children. As the
departments we are the recipients. If a learner is happy with their material and social conditions, then their participation in academic and extramural activities improves tremendously.
Their social presence gets better,” Dr Madondo said. District Mayor Thobani Shandu said the municipality was fully cognizant of the hardship that has been visited upon the people of iLembe
District and KZN in general. “The devastating floods arrived just as we still battling the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. As the municipality we decided that, even with the limited
resources at our disposal, dressing pp these children in proper uniforms was a nonnegotiable. We will continue to support education in our District, and to work closely with the Department in
tackling the challenges facing the sector,” the Mayor stated. Each learner received a sulk set of uniform, including socks and shoes, and a grocery hamper.

The Presidency maintains that Ramaphosa remains steadfast in his quest to root out corruption. “President Cyril Ramaphosa acknowledges that while there is much public interest and concern about claims made in a criminal complaint against him, he remains firmly focused on the task of rebuilding the economy and
President Cyril Ramaphosa has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the millions of Dollars allegedly stolen from his farm in February 2020, and the subsequent criminal case against him. The case has been opened by former chief of the State Security Agency (SSA) Arthur Fraser, who is now the National Commissioner in the Department of Correctional
the country. The President reaffirms that he was not involved in any criminal conduct, and once again pledges his full cooperation with any police investigation. “He confirms that following the incident in February 2020, security has been improved around his homes. Due to the possible investigation, the Presidency will not be in a position to engage further on the detail of the matters, and urges that due process be allowed to take its course,” The Presidency said in a statement. Ramaphosa has also affirmed his commitment to fighting corruption and professionalising law enforcement agencies to better serve and respond to public needs. Meanwhile, calls are growing for the President to come clean about the stolen Dollars saga. Ramaphosa says the stolen money was the proceeds from the auction of animals on his farm in Limpopo.

The Department added that the booking list would be provided daily and would include contact details of prebooked clients, which can be used proactively to alert them in the event the system has gone offline. The Department of Education in iLembe District is serious about achieving its Matric pass rate target of 100% for the Class of 2022. The Department's District Director Dr Musawenkosi Madondo has revealed plans to host a Matric Study Camp for all matriculants doing Grade 12 in iLembe District this year. Dr Madondo said the camp will begin on the 1st of July 2022, and will run until the beginning of the final matric examinations. The Department's Matric Camp plan received a boost this week when iLembe District Municipality donated four laptop computers to be utilized
by the Department in support of the Study Camp. The Municipality has also made a commitment to provide further support towards the Department's preparations for the matric examinations, within the available resources. “We remain resolute in our objective to achieve 100% pass rate this year, failing which we must achieve a minimum of 80%. Since we do not have accommodation facilities to house our learners during the Study Camp, we have decided to run a day camp, which means the learners will be going to camp every morning and return home in the afternoon,” Dr Madondo stated.

KwaDukuza Mayor Cllr Lindile Nhaca is thrilled after the Shoprite Group reopened its Shakaskraal store, which was looted and burnt down in the riots of July last year. Nhaca visited the store on Wednesday last week, just a few hours before the official opening. She met with the management, who assured her that all the employees who had been employed at the store prior to
looting had been retained by the company. Nhaca was accompanied by KwaDukuza Council Speaker Cllr Dolly Govender, the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Economic Development and Planning (EDP) Cllr Njabulo Cele and Ward 28 Councillor Doeshie Govender. Just over 80 workers are employed at the store, which is the only large supermarket in the
small town of Shakaskraal. Councillor Doeshie Govender said all the employees at the store were residents of Shakaskraal and surrounding areas, which includes wards 8, 23 and 28. “We welcome the reopening of the store as it means that jobs have been saved, and a few new jobs have also been created. The community of Shakaskraal and surrounding areas will also benefit from this, as it is a boost to the local economy,” Mayor Nhaca stated.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is digging in its heels with regard to the fuel price issue. While government has decided to extend the reduction of the general fuel levy by R1.50, in an attempt to cushion the blow to the motorists, the DA remains unimpressed. Last week the party picketed in various cities across the country, to further sound its call for the people of South Africa to unite against the fuel price hikes. The extension in the general fuel levy relief has done very little, as the price of petrol still went up by R2.43 per litre, while diesel increased by R1.10 per litre. Furthermore, 75 cents of the temporary reduction will be fed back into the fuel price at the beginning of July, and then ended
in August. The DA believes that government can do more to protect South Africans against the skyrocketing fuel prices. “Fuel price increases have longlasting effects on the people on the ground, particularly young job seekers who use public transport to seek opportunities. It also puts further pressure on those who have to juggle putting food on the table for their families while they are forced to spend an even bigger chunk of their income on public transport. “Unfortunately, public transport fares increases are permanent, as associations never decrease their prices in line with the current value of the fuel. “South Africans are already facing many challenges, and these continued increases will destroy
whatever is left of our beautiful country all the hopes and aspirations young South Africans carry on their way to work on a daily basis,” stated Nicholas Nyati, DA Youth interim federal leader. The party further argues that the astronomical fuel prices have an adverse ripple effect, resulting in pronounced poverty, and widespread suffering among the people of South Africa, in particular those most vulnerable. “Young people are the first and last line of defence in saving South Africa, for we understand that when the youth works, South Africa works,” Nyati said. The DA in ilembe District also joined the picket, calling for drastic reduction in fuel taxes and levies, which could see the price of fuel going down by at last a third.

SA partners with US to increase vaccination uptake
KSST males who secured the KDVA opening tournament crown GLOBAL-VAX: Pictured (L to R) are Deputy Health Minister Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla and Heather Merritt from the US Embassy
The Department of Health has partnered with the United States government to launch the Global Vax Campaign, which is designed to increase vaccination uptake in South Africa. The Department aims to vaccinate at least 70% of South Africans, as part of plans to increase population immunity against Covid-
19. The launch of the Global Vax campaign took place on Friday last week, and was supported by a myriad activities al aimed at encouraging more people to get their jabs. The department has in the past voiced its deep concerns over the slow pace of vaccination.
Mandeni car crash leaves one injured
KSST females continued the dominance
KSST has sent a clear message to clubs competing in the K w a D u k u z a Vo l l e y b a l l Association that they back in business after dominating the opening tournament of the association in both the male and female sections. KSST, a few years ago, dominated the scenes in volleyball, both locally and provincially and commitments due to work and studies, the team fell apart. But after the opening tournament it seems that they are back to regain their dominance, proving that they are a force to be
reckoned with in the 2022 season. The female squad have been flying the flag high but have now managed to put their male team together. In the male section, in the first cross over semi-final, Sunbrook came up against a fired up Cool Leaders who threw everything into the game, making Sunbrook work for every point. After a hard-fought game, Sunbrook secured a berth in the final winning 25-20, 25-22. The second semi-final saw Heights take on the revamped KSST
outfit. The youthful Heights squad put up a brave fight but succumbed 18-25, 19-25 placing KSST against Sunbrook in the final. In the final, KSST showed their class beating Sunbrook in straight sets 25-15, 25-17 to secure the silverware. The lady's final was contested by old arch rivals KSST and the young H2O 2 and once again, KSST proved their superiority winning easily 25-10, 25-9 ensuring KSST secures both sections.
