iLembe’s top matriculants celebrate results

Evashen Morgan Pillay

By Xpress Reporter

The 'Top Five' Grade 12 learners in the iLembe District Municipality have done themselves, their parents and their schools proud with the achievement of outstanding results. The future looks bright for the cream of the crop, as they bagged numerous distinctions and brought honour to the district. iLembe's top learner, Evashen Morgan Pillay obtained distinctions in English, Afrikaans, Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Sciences,

Accounting and Life Orientation. Evashen achieved more than 90% in all seven subjects, and was placed 8th in KwazuluNatal. He also scooped a special award for obtaining 99% in the Physical Science examination. The ecstatic learner will study Medicine at the University of KwazuluNatal. “I would like to thank my parents for their love and support throughout my schooling career. I also want to thank my educators at Manor Secondary for preparing me for the

examinations,” he said. Evashen, who worked consistently throughout the year, encouraged current Grade 12 learners to set goals for themselves and take the necessary steps to achieve them. Another Manor Secondary learner, Ruwal Lutchman, was placed 3rd in iLembe. He obtained distinctions in Mathematics, Life Orientation, Physical Science, Accounting, Life Sciences, Afrikaans and English. He also scooped the Mathematics award in iLembe. Ruwal's passion for numbers was a factor behind

his decision to study Actuarial Science at the University of Stellenbosch. He urges the class of 2019 to focus from day one. “I was aiming for seven distinctions, but I didn't expect to be in the top 5. I did not have a cellphone during the exams. You've got to focus and give it 110%. Dedication and hard work is required.” Ruwal would like to thank his parents, family, friends, as well as educators of Lower Tugela Primary and Manor Secondary School for their support. Saadia Sheik Ebrahim,

also of Manor Secondary, was placed 5th in the iLembe District. She obtained distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Sciences, Information Technology, English, Afrikaans and Life Orientation. Saadia has been accepted to study Chemical Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch. She encourages current Grade 12 learners to study every subject daily. “Prayer is the key. I would never have been able to deal with the stress of matric if it wasn't for the calming effects of prayer,” she said.

Mayor Mthembu congratulates matriculants By Xpress Reporter

KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor Dr Ricardo Njabulo Mthembu has voiced his satisfaction regarding the 2018 Matric Results which came out last week. In a statement released by Mthembu, he encourages students who did not succeed to try again this year. “Congratulations to the Class of 2018 for its sterling achievement,

given the challenges and limitations some of the learners and educators were faced with in the year of examination. On the same breath, we sympathize with those who have not been able to emerge as victors on this journey. We appeal to them not to be irrational in the decisions they take going forward. We encourage them to reregister and try again,” said Mthembu. “The performance of the Class of 2018 in the iLembe District and KwaDukuza Municipality in p a r t i c u l a r

confirms that the district administration and the provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal are responding to the far reaching cries that were echoed regarding what were immediate intervention to issues that would boost performance in schools in the district. Uniquely, this class, was the fifth group to be exposed to the CAPS curriculum, which recorded the fourth highest enrolment of fulltime and part-time candidates in the history of the Basic Education system in South Africa. Indeed, the working together of stakeholders in this sector, some of whom assisted to tutor scarce skills

solution and coming on board to improve the performance of learners in the matric examinations. We are calling on all pupils who have been accepted to higher institutions of learning who require financial assistance to pursue their studies to take advantage of our financial assistance scheme which closes on the 18th January 2018. Visit our offices, the KwaDukuza Municipality website and social media pages to view the advert as well as check out the local newspapers to see details regarding eligibility and directions to apply,” concluded Mthembu.

subjects, has ensured a solid foundation and framework that promises only appreciation from now on,” expressed the Mayor. KwaDukuza had 1 706 full-time candidates who wrote the November 2018 NSC examinations. 1 347 of these candidates succeeded and 359 either did not succeed or did complete their examinations to due to unforeseen circumstances. “We can all gather that work is being done. Furthermore, we are considerate that more still needs to be done, however, for the great work done for this examination I want to thank all educators and teacher unions for being part of the

during the evening of Thursday, 27 December 2018. During the early hours of Friday, 28 December 2018, the family noticed that the victim had disappeared and both her cellphones were off. The victim's family became suspicious after the victim's husband also disappeared. Upon contacting him, the husband did not inform the family where Zandile Mhlongo was, and was extremely uncooperative, which led the family to the KwaDukuza SAPS. The members of KwaDukuza SAPS gave the case immediate attention and went straight to the victim's home in Quba area, Ntshawini, KwaDukuza. During the members' initial investigation, they had discovered the newly cemented floor on the premises, which indicated something sinister. NRCF brings joy to the needy By Xpress Reporter

The Njabulo Ricardo Charity Foundation (NRCF) held its Christmas luncheon and games for less privileged children and those with no families on 24 December 2018, at Chris Hani Hall in Ward 15 in the KwaDukuza Municipality. The NRCF hosted this event

following the realization that many children within society have never had the opportunity to celebrate Christmas and/or receive gifts due to their background and socioeconomic circumstances. Speaking at the event, the founder of the foundation Dr. Ricardo Mthembu, expressed his own experiences relating to

how he remembers Christmas as a child and the difficulties his parents went through when Christmas had to be celebrated. Mthembu also committed that his foundation would donate school uniform items to the school going children that were in attendance. “I chose to be here today with you to celebrate Christmas

KIND GESTURE: Dr. Ricardo Mthembu, Cllr. Dolly Mthembu, Father Christmas, Cllr. Bonginkosi Mabaso Standing (L-R) Dj Merlon, Mr. Phahla and Mr. Thengwayo with some of the beneficiaries who received goodie bags

because you are my family, not so long ago I was you and not so long from now you will be me, that is why I have chosen to initiate this programme in this community so that as you grow you do not feel the pain of thinking that you are less important because the conditions you find yourselves in, cannot allow for you to celebrate Christmas like the other families do,” cited Mthembu. “I will also see to it that NRCF donates uniforms for all of you who are going to school in the New Year.” The children were given goodie bags, which had sweet treats and educational games that probe a child's strategic thinking as well as Christmas hats. DJ Merlon attended the event and interacted with the children. The Koze Kuse hitmaker said, “We must thank men like Ricardo Mthembu, men who wake up every day to make a difference in someone's life. I am touched by your gesture Mr. Mthembu, please encourage others to do like you are doing.”

Remembering Penny Dhaver KwaDukuza lost one of its favourite daughters on Wednesday, 12 December 2018. Ms Penny Dhaver was the face of Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza for many decades. When many of us thought of the vulnerable children within the town and beyond its borders, Ms Dhaver was the go to. She was the vanguard and force of children's protection by reputation, presence and doing her job, nay her day to day passion; through sickness and in health. The annual Winter Fair that we all are accustomed to was imbued with her drive and enthusiasm. Penny Dhaver deserves a posthumous KDM Mayoral Award indeed to the powers of local government who are reading! The mainstay of a town's conscience and love of children's protection and nurturing fervently personified by Penny leaves a void. The sunflower loving Penny, who was the people's and children's de facto champion; will see her spirit, legacy and lore live forever. Rest In Peace (RIP) Penny Dhaver and thank you from all of us that had the pleasure of knowing and working with you. Condolences wholeheartedly to her Dad and family to her colleagues. Free education! Act now! Every individual yearns for a better life; we all wish that we had the power to change the past. It is never too late to accomplish your dreams and aspirations regardless of the obstacles you may encounter, though we might not hold the power to turn back time, we can intervene now and change the future. SUNSHINE PALC (Public Adult Learning Centre) that is situated in Glenhills helps people gain their dream of being educated. It focuses upon all age groups such as school leavers, adults or even the senior citizens. The centre is a structured program supported by the Department Of Higher Education and Training, people that wish to gain a matric

certificate can visit the centre to enquire further information. They can immediately begin class to prepare for the matric exam. There are also the several literacy levels to which any individual can pursue and gain literacy. Numerous people enrol to take advantage of this exciting learning programme. The classes are from Monday to Thursday at the Glenhills Resource Centre at 6pm to 8pm, the centre urges the community to take advantage of this programme, the classes are FREE, the time is also very convenient as prospective students can hold an occupation during the day and still gain an education without interfering with your work-life. Soon to be implemented skill development

workshops will be introduced once we gain co-operation from the community. Parents are urged to send their children that have left school and have been away from any learning institution, this programme has proved successful in educating people who were victims to drugs, abuse, school truants and so forth. We believe the only way to make a change in life, is to gain power through knowledge, similarly to teaching a man how to fish rather than giving him the fish… For more information about the centre or enquiries about its educational programme contact 0785136797 / 0737923047 for 2019 registrations.

Statement by Spokesperson: Blythedale Beach Ratepayers and Residents Association The efforts of Director Prinsloo and the teams under his control are to be complimented on their efforts over the Festive Season. These ladies and gentlemen toiled long hours in very hot conditions, were subjected to considerable abuse by unreasonable visitors, yet they executed their tasks and duties in a commendable manner. Despite a few unexpected challenges they maintained good control and

management of the crowds, there were a few minor incidents and, all in all, a good time was enjoyed by all. BBRRA also engaged K 9 Security to assist to the law enforcement agencies if the need arose. Velocity Security and G 4 S, who operate in Blythedale, were also effective in maintaining a safe environment. The community places on record its appreciation to everyone involved in ensuring that the 2018 Festive Season went without incident and inconvenience to residents and visitors was minimal.

Failing matric The next step

Matric results have just been released and while most students are busy celebrating their success, there are some who have not been so fortunate. For those of you who have Cnr. Mahatma Gandhi & EV Mahomed Streets, Stanger failed your matric exams, it is not the end of the world for you. This is a temporary setback for you and these days, there are so many alternate options for you to explore. A common worry for those who have failed, is that they will now never be able to get the job they wanted after graduating, or even the university degree they were first opting for. Wrong! You should never let exam failure force you into believing that you now can't achieve any of your dreams. It may be a little more harder to reach, but that doesn't make them unreachable. Failing exams doesn't make you any less of a person, any less intelligent, or any less able to achieve what you want to, than those who may have gotten better results in their Venue: exams than you. A love affair with sport In conversation with Yunus Moorad Undoubtedly, one of the greatest sportsmen that was produced by Stanger/KwaDukuza has to be Yunus Moorad who turned every game he played into gold. Moreover he excelled in his two favourite sports: football during the winter season and cricket in the summer months. Born in 1960 in Darnall he attended Darnall Primary and Stanger Madressa and matriculated from Stanger Secondary receiving the sports boys' award in both primary and secondary school. Moorad's sporting career began at a young age representing both the primary and secondary school teams. He was a founder member of Elangeni and Arcadia Football Club whilst plying his trade in various other clubs that included City Lads, Darnall, Varsity Heights, Berea, Nothingham, Stanger United and Real Celtic. With his outstanding leadership qualities, he was named captain of the various clubs. His role as midfielder and striker did not go unnoticed as he was also selected to represent the then Lower Tugela Soccer Federation. He received various accolades and also scored the first goal for Stanger United in the semi professional league.

Moorad also excelled at cricket starting his career at Darnall Cricket Club and at the tender age of 16 and then joined the legendary Royals Cricket Club that played in the Super League until he retired. He represented Natal High Schools and captained the team in 1978 at the National tournament. He was also selected to represent Stanger and District Cricket Union, Tongaat Cricket Union and Durban and District Cricket Union. Moorad played in the Natal 'B' squad until 1979 after which he made his break through into the 'A' team making a total of 34 appearances in Natal colours as wicket keeper/batsman, making him the highest capped wicket keeper. He amassed about 1000 runs and 100 dismissals in provincial colours. He was also the vice captain for numerous years. At the Howa Bowl competition in 1990/1991, he topped the batting averages for the province and Royals at club level. After retirement, Moorad did not go into oblivions passing on his expertise to youngsters in both soccer and cricket. He coached both Black Leopards and Arcadia Football Clubs. He

then turned his attention to cricket passing on his skills to youngsters in Manor Cricket Club, Commercial/manor and Ashraffiya Cricket Clubs. His golden year was definitely 2000/2001 season as

Fine margins and Fernandinho keep Man City hot on Liverpool's heels

Standout Fernandinho held Liverpool at bay

Manchester City resurrected their defence of the Premier League by inflicting Liverpool's first defeat of the season in an enthralling encounter decided by centimetres. At one end Sadio Mane hit the post and John Stones cleared off the line with 1.12 centimetres to spare before the ball crossed the line to deny Liverpool a first-half lead. Leroy Sane's winner in City's 2-1 victory also hit the woodwork of the same goal over an hour later, but this time the ball spun into the net. "In the end, you can say post (and) in or post (and) out can make a massive difference -- today we witnessed that," said Liverpool

manager JurgenKlopp. City now trail the league leaders by just four points after a run of three defeats in four games in December threatened to completely derail their bid to become the first side in a decade to retain the Premier League. "It was a final for us, because losing today it was almost over," said City boss Pep Guardiola. A game that had everything as Roberto Firmino's well-worked equaliser for the visitors cancelled out Sergio Aguero's stunning strike to open the scoring, showed why this fixture has superseded other rivalries as the Premier League's showcase since the arrival of Guardiola and Klopp. Despite City's romp to the title with a record 100 points last season, it was Liverpool who held the upper hand in head-to-head meetings, winning three out of four, including a Champions League quarter-final 5-1 on aggregate. A thirst for revenge and desire not to surrender their title was obvious from the City players, on the bench and in the stands. As the rivalry between these two sides has brewed over the past year, City are normally portrayed as the more cold and clinical - a winning machine built on money from Abu

Dhabi. But by full-time the Etihad had reached a fever pitch more reminiscent of Anfield as Guardiola admitted he had never experienced an atmosphere like it for a City home game. Guardiola was also clearly feeling the pressure as he somehow avoided being sent to the stands for a tirade at the fourth official after a fine save from Ederson prevented Mohamed Salah scoring a late equaliser, with City claiming a foul in the build-up. No manager has beaten the Catalan more than Klopp. Between their clashes with German giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund and now eight in England, the Liverpool boss still edges the head-to-head seven victories to six. Guardiola has been unflinching in his determination that his principles will not change despite City's recent slump. But this was a win achieved as much by sweat as skill. For the first time under Guardiola, City had less possession than their opponents in a Premier League game. Bernardo Silva covered 13.7 kilometres - the biggest distance by a Premier League player in any game this season. Yet City's standout midfielder

But the mental strength of Klopp's Fernandinho, who has returned from injury just in time to keep City men will now be tested if they are to afloat in the title race after missing succeed where other Liverpool sides the recent defeats to Crystal Palace have failed, most notably in 2008/2009 and 2013/2014 when and Leicester. "Fernandinho is easily the best leading at Christmas, in ending a 29central midfield player in our year drought without winning the country right now," said Graeme league.
