ILembe commemorates World AIDS Day As South Africa joined the world on Tuesday 01 December 2020 to commemorate World Aids Day, Operation Sukuma Sakhe MEC Champion for Ilembe District Hon NP Nkonyeni together with Ilembe leadership commemorated the World Aids Day event held at KwaDukuza, Shaka's Head sport ground on Tuesday 01st December. Prior to the formal commemorative event, the MEC Champion together with the Mayors of the local municipalities and the District Mayor lit a candle in remembrance of all those who succumbed to HIV-Aids in the District. This programme forms part of the province-wide remembrance activities to mark World Aids Day. SA currently has 7.6 million people living with HIV, making it the worst nation affected by the disease. Speaking during the event, ILembe District Municipality Mayor Cllr Sduduzo Gumede condemn the gender-based violence and he further requested that people must report abuse, “People must report any form of abuse in our society, all men who abuse children and women don't deserve to be part of our iLembe
District community”, said Mayor Gumede. Speaking during the commemoration MEC NP Nkonyeni said the World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public that HIV has not gone away, further urged the community of ILembe to eat healthy, “As government we are hopeful that ILembe community will join us in a fight against HIV & AIDS. KwaZulu-Natal has the most residents in the age bracket living with HIV 1.4 million. The provinces with the highest prevalence rates in SA are Mpumalanga (20.9%), Free State (21.3%), and KwaZuluNatal (24%)”. Let's unite and ease the pain and suffering caused by HIV/AIDS to our communities, children are more vulnerable to common causes of death that affect all children in developing countries, such as malaria, malnutrition, pneumonia, tuberculosis (TB), diarrhoea, and vaccinepreventable diseases such as measles”, said Nkonyeni In conclusion MEC Nkonyeni reminded the attendees that Covid-19 is still existing and people must wear a mask all the times

Expert in the education sector have mixed views on the decision to bump up by 5% marks for the 2020 year-end exams in grades 4 to 9. But,
said the department of education, extra help was necessary to ensure deserving children did not suffer more following an already stressful
school year. The department sent a circular to all schools, giving them permission to increase marks by up to five percent in up to three subjects and an additional one for maths, to assist learners to proceed to the next grade. Department of Basic Education director-general Hubert Mathanzima Mweli said djustments and condonation passes were a normal aspect of progression and were used as a special dispensation, to avoid the potential high retention of learners in lower grade, “Missing out on more than five months of schooling for many
would mean congestion in classes, see many suffer academically and stress over the long term, even when they could have easily achieved the desired marks”, said Mweli Mary Metcalfe, senior research associate at University of Johannesburg, said the decision was right as learners needed all the support they could get to pass, “They will need to catch up for lost time and the process will be over several years. They must be supported and with minimal stress, which takes into account the different environments, among them studying at home”, said Mary.

notice to parents and learners, “We confirm that we have now identified a number of COVID-19 confirmed cases arising from these super-spreader events. This therefore means that if you attended any of these Rage events, you are now
regarded as a contact. We now urge all the Rage attendees to immediately go into a 10 day quarantine period as per the Department of Health Guidelines on Quarantine and Isolation. We
also urge that all Rage attendants test for COVID19. We also encourage parents to take their children who have attended Rage for testing as soon as possible,” warned Mkhize
“We warn South Africans that this is a clear illustration that large gatherings which involve the consumption of alcohol are a major risk and continue to undermine our e?orts to contain the spread

of the virus. Whilst government makes an e?ort to contain this virus, we now plead with all parents to also exercise their parental prerogative and set boundaries on activities that their children (specifically the youth) can participate in. It is clear that in these entertainment activities, most participants are not constantly conscious of good behaviour. This means that our youth is not only exposing themselves to the risk of contracting COVID19, but they also put the lives of their parents, grandparents and other loved ones living with comorbidities at risk. We also encourage all participants of these super-spreader events to download and interact with the COVID-Alert App as part of our contact tracing e?orts,” added Dr Zweli Mkhize

Businesses in KwaDukuza CBD have raised concerns about the lack of SAPS visibility on the streets which has led to the escalation of crime in most parts of the CBD. Businesses allege that criminals operate in broad daylight, with women and the elderly being the main targets. They further alleged that businesses within KwaDukuza have now become vulnerable to all types of crime including robbery and break-ins, crime causes failures of small businesses that cannot afford proper security protection or insurance against losses. Business owners believe this could be resolved through high police visibility in the CBD. One business owner who asked to remain anonymous stated that burglary or robbery of a potential customer disrupts business operations for several days that in total imposes a significant cost on the local economy and called on law enforcement to urgently improve its coordinated policing in the CBD and surrounding areas, “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think you'd see anything like this in our township. We have
lost faith in our local SAPS, every day we are watching people getting robbed in front of our businesses. Drugs addicts are running havoc, people are no longer coming to our shops due to the spike of crime activities in all KwaDukuza Streets,” said the business owner. The business owner further added that old solutions won't fix KwaDukuza's high crime rates, “It's not the lack of resources because police officers are seen driving police vehicles but not patrolling or monitoring,” added the business owner. Another business owner operating on King Shaka Street said it is a well-known fact by now that criminals are roaming free in the CBD and so much so that shop owners and staff can actually identify the criminals and even know when they are about to commit, “when these incidents occur, it is the security companies that are first to respond, which is actually their job, to respond. A police presence though, is critical to prevent these criminal activities in the first place. The municipality should even consider having a smaller police outpost in the CBD to monitor crime and to respond
into operation as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing more policemen and women in the CBD, protecting the citizens of Kwadukuza”, added the business owner The business houses, however recommended the sterling job done by KDM Crime Prevention and Traffic Police and our local security companies. On 30 November 2020 KwaDukuza SAPS was contacted via a formal media enquiry, communications officer at KwaDukuza SAPS Priya Nunkumar said Brigadier S.F Mhlongo needs some time to comment.
quicker. Maybe that would pave the way forward for effective policing in the business hub,” said the business owner “The community is fed up with crime. They are discouraged from walking around with jewellery on, or with expensive items like cellphones. People are getting mugged and robbed daily. This situation has worsened over a few years and has become a regular occurrence, which is unfair on the community of Kwadukuza. Something needs to be done urgently. SAPS officials need a proper plan, and they need to put this plan

Groutville residents reject refuse collection levy Musa Mnyandu
However Khanyile held a different view. “The current system is open to abuse. People with cottages on their properties and shopowners obviously generate higher volumes of waste. They then use their vehicles to dispose of their waste and fill up our skips much quicker, leaving other residents with no option but to dump on the street. Skips are collected only once a week. It's clear the system is not working, and that the people need to start paying for proper waste removal,” stated Khanyile, much to the consternation of the poverty-ravaged residents. However Khanyile went on to explain that to address the question of affordability, Council would then use its existing indigent policy, and not charge pensioners and those earning below a certain threshold. He said further engagements with the community in

KwaDukuza Municipality has attracted the ire of the community of Ward 29 in Groutville over a proposal to introduce a refuse collection levy of R201 per month. Currently, the area of Groutville is serviced through strategically placed waste management skips, a refuse collection method that has been described by the municipality's Executive Director of Community Services and Amenities Siyabonga Khanyile as a “complete failure”.
Addressing a mayoral Imbizo for Ward 29 on Tuesday last week, which was chaired by KwaDukuza EXCO member Thulani Ntuli, Khanyile indicated that the time had come for the community to realise and admit that the placement of skips had failed dismally to address the issue of waste management in the area. He said it was now time for the residents of Groutville to start paying the refuse collection levy in order to access proper waste management, which comes with the supply of two free refuse bags per week, per household. However the residents would have none of it. One resident accused Khanyile of “publically admitting to have failed in your job, while you still enjoy a full remuneration package”. The residents contended that they were “too poor to afford a monthly levy of R201”. “The major problem is that refuse skips are not collected, which causes them to overflow, with garbage spilling all over the area. Our entire area is full of garbage. We are ashamed to live in an area like this,” one resident pointed out.

this respect would be necessary. Residents also raised serious concerns about the rate of crime in KwaDukuza CBD as well as in the outlying areas. Residents said robberies were now a common occurrence in KwaDukuza, with law enforcement agencies apparently adopting a lax attitude towards the growing scourge. “Even schoolchildren are not spared. Drug peddling takes place in broad daylight. Where are the police?” One resident wanted to know. Moses Faya, the Director of Community Safety at KwaDukuza Municipality, assured the agitated residents that law enforcement officials were taking the issue of crime seriously. “Our officers make arrests on a daily basis. One of most worrying problems that we encounter is that when it comes to drug related crimes, those found selling whoonga are always released as soon as laboratory testing reveals no evidence of any illegal substance in the concoction. Police are powerless to deal with this problem. Only
parliament can amend the relevant law to cover some of these substances. However we encourage members of the public to always report criminal activities. While KwaDukuza Municipality's Crime Prevention Department operates only from 6am to 10pm, we do have a 24-hour emergency number, which is (032) 9462711. Alternatively, residents can contact our emergency cell number which is (060) 7143764,” stated Faya. In the current financial year, Council has approved a budget of almost R2.8 million for the procurement of patrol vehicles. A further R4 million has been proposed for the following two fiscal years. R900 000 has also been set aside in the year to end on the 30th of June 2021, for the upgrade of CCTV cameras in the CBD, with a further R1.6 million contemplated to be spent for the same purpose over the ensuing two fiscal years.

LTSF refs reunite
The Lower Tugela Soccer Federation (LTSF) referees of yesterday reunited at a function held at the RA Moodley Hall last Saturday. These referees were hailed as the most honest and fair referees in Southern Natal. These referees served under LTSF under the astute leadership of P. Suriah and LTSF chairman Haroon Mohamedy. Fishy Naidoo commended these referees for their dedication during
the difficult yesteryears. The referees thanked Naidoo for introducing them into referring into the higher leagues in Southern Natal. Naidoo also flew the flag of LTSA by officiating in the National Soccer League and the professional Soccer League. Naidoo also paid tribute to those colleagues that have passed on. Fans bring atmosphere back to EPL After an unpredictable start to the season, a sense of normality is returning to the Premier League as all of the top six won on a weekend when fans were back in stadiums for the first time since March. Crowds of 2000 are now allowed to attend in two-tier areas for coronavirus restrictions across England, meaning West Ham, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool were the first to welcome supporters back. The Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool fans all got the bonus of seeing their sides win, whilst both Manchester giants also won to ensure they remain in the title fight before they face off next weekend.

Fans make their presence felt Despite the limited numbers in the stadiums capable of hosting over 20 times more people, there was a welcome difference in atmosphere from months of hearing players' and coaches' voices ring around cavernous arenas. At Anfield, the Kop was opened for the first time since Liverpool ended a 30-year wait to win the league title and played its part as Jurgen Klopp's injury-hit side saw of Wolves 4-0. “Tonight it was so enjoyable. It was so nice when we came out to warm up, we all had goose bumps,” said Klopp after the game with his trademark fist pump. “It was much better (than expected). It was perfect. The noise, what people did, you could feel and hear how long they waited for it.” Chelsea boss Frank Lampard also hailed the impact spectators had on his side coming from behind to beat Leeds. “Their input was huge with the noise they made,” said Lampard. However, the difference fans make could lead to a disadvantage for those clubs who still find themselves in tier-three
zones where games must still be played behind closed doors. Burnley, Sheffield United, Manchester City and West Brom were not allowed to welcome supporters back.
have now combined for 27 goals this season, with Kane providing the assist for 10 of the South Korean's 13 strikes.
'World-class Kane and Son the difference between Spurs and Arsenal
For the fifth consecutive away league game, Manchester United came from behind to win 3-1 at West Ham. The marked difference between the dismal first half and superb second period from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men could at least be easily explained on Saturday as Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford rode to the rescue after the break. Solskjaer had tried to keep his two key men fresh for last night's crucial Champions League trip to RB Leipzig. But Fernandes is an irreplaceable figure for the Red Devil's right now. It was the Portuguese's arrival in the January transfer window that transformed United's fortunes to make it into the top four last season. This season, Fernandes has scored five goals and provided four assists in sides five comefrom-behind wins on the road.
Tottenham's deadly duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min took Jose Mourinho's men back to the top of the table as they each produced a clinical finish that goal shy Arsenal could not match. Son alone now has as many goals as the Gunners with 11 points and 14 places now separating the north London rivals. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admitted his tenure in charge is “unsustainable” unless his side start to score goals after a fifth defeat in seven league games. The visitors had more than twice as much possession as Spurs and more shots on goal, but Tottenham's title charge is being powered by two of the best forwards in the world in peak form.
