T

he iLembe District Municipality, through its Operations Manager, Mr. Elias Bhengu has explained the water woes currently experienced by Oceanview, Townview, Indian Village and Shakaville residents. Last week, irate community members called our publication yearning for an intervention. The residents also cited that there's a general water shortage in areas serviced by ILembe District Municipality and water tankers struggle to service thousands of households. “There is no water anywhere. Not everyone has water tanks. To access water, we have to beg someone and tell them we have no water. Covid19 requires people to have regular access to water. How are we supposed to live in homes without water when there are people taking

treatment? Secondly, this also presents problems for women because if there is no water in our areas we have to travel long distances to fetch water. Without water, there is death,” said one concerned resident from Shakaville who asked not to be mentioned. Operations manager at ILembe District Municipality, Elias Bhengu said water outages in Ilembe are normally caused by burst pipes and power outage since load shedding also affects water supply, “On Thursday we had a pipe burst in Townview but we managed to repair it on Friday. A water tanker was sent to the affected areas. Last week we had load shedding, water networks, reservoirs, water treatment facility and pump stations all require electricity to operate. During load shedding, stopping these facilities is a must and this may result in water shortages or even low

pressure especially in high end areas. When the electricity comes back it takes time to fill up the reservoirs,” added Bhengu Bhengu said pipe bursts and water leaks cause water loss, he urged residents to report to the municipality and added that Ilembe District Municipality is currently rolling out its pipe replacement project in Oceanview and Shakaville, the project was launched last year and is expected to be complete towards mid-2021. The objectives of the project is to improve water service delivery within several areas in ILembe through the replacement of old AC pipelines to address service interruptions, water losses and to increase customer satisfaction. Bhengu said the AC Pipe replacement project has been completed in areas such as Blythedale, Stanger Manor, Zinkwazi and High Ridge. In conclusion Bhengu pleaded with the community to remind calm and urged residents to use water sparingly, “ILembe is committed to providing a sustainable water and sanitation supply to all residents. Residents are then encouraged to ensure they have enough water to last the duration of a power outage.

Calls to fix huge sink hole on Tensing Climb By Xpress Reporter

Indian Village residents in KwaDukuza, have called on KwaDukuza Municipality to act immediately before a sinkhole at the corner of Tensing Climb and Dwaya causes a major disaster. This comes after two vehicles accidently drove into this ditch in the past few days. A portion of Tensing Climb was washed away after heavy rains that hit the province last month, the road has been partially closed since 28 January 2021. When approached to find developments on the repairs of this road, KwaDukuza Municipality pointed fingers at ILembe District Municipality, citing that Ilembe District Municipality removed the storm water catch pit in the corner of Dwaya and Tensing Climb, “Our Civil Engineering Team went out on Friday with Direct: Civil Engineering. Their assessments were that, the problem was caused by Ilembe District Municipality (IDM). There is a waterline project and sewer manhole in the middle of the road, IDM removed the stormwater catchpit in the corner of Dwaya and Tensing Climb then the water flooded the house at the bottom,” said KDM Media Liaison Officer,

Sipho Mkhize. Mkhize further cited that a TLB was sent to dig the trench to prevent water to reach the house again, “On our side of KDM, a TLB was sent to dig the trench to prevent water to reach the house again, however, IDM still needs to reconstruct the stormwater catchpit or else we will have this problem again when rains come back,” added Mkhize. Operations Manager at ILembe District Municipality, Elias Bhengu acknowledged that the Municipality had carried out repairs, further added that ILembe consulted KwaDukuza Municipality prior the repairs began, “In Tensing climb there was a problem of overflowing sewer, we came to repair the sewer. However we discovered that the sewer pipe was under the catchpit then we were forced to r e m o v e i t . W e n o t i f ie d KwaDukuza Municipality before we began repairs. ILembe has service agreement w i t h K w a D u k u z a Municipality that assists in situations like this,” said Bhengu Concluding, Bhengu said they wrote an urgent letter to the KDM, alerting the municipality that catch pit needs to be repaired.

ANC loses prominent members By Xpress Reporter

GREYHOUND: Popular bus company Greyhound has announced that 14 February will be its final day of operations. Calls have been made for the government to intervene and prevent the shutdown.

Transport group Greyhound has announced that the Greyhound and Citiliner bus operations will close in February 2021. In a statement published on its website and social media platforms, Greyhound said that its services will run until 14 February 2021. The group said that passengers with tickets booked for services after this date will be refunded, “All passengers who have tickets booked for services after this date will be refunded in full. For assistance with receiving

your refund, contact our Call Centre 011 611 8000 or 087 352 0352 or email your ticket reference number and contact details to refunds@greyhound.co.za. It has been our pleasure connecting you across Southern Africa for the past 37 years. Thank you to all our passengers for your continued support,” said the statement. The company thanked passengers for their support. According to South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council

(SARBC), more than 800 people will lose their jobs, “The closure of Greyhound and Citiliner are an indictment of the sad state of affairs and turmoil the industry is in. The industry has experienced a huge dip and it is really bleeding. There are some companies which have not operated since April last year. People are selling their buses and businesses, and numerous companies such as Putco have had to retrench workers. It's terrible,” said the council secretary-general, Gary Wilson

The ANC is mourning the loss of five KwaZulu-Natal stalwarts Meshack Radebe, Zwelifile Christopher Ntuli, Nompumelelo Bridget Ntshangase, Nonhle Mkhulisi and Alfred Duma who died within a few days apart from each other. On Saturday ANC in KwaZulu-Natal confirmed that former KZN Agriculture MEC Dr Meshack Radebe passed away at the hospital after short illness. Hailed as a political peacekeeper, Radebe played a critical role in stabilising relations between the ANC and IFP towards the end of apartheid. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala expressed deep shock and sadness at the news of his passing, “As the government of KZN, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family friends and all relatives; but also his political home the ANC. Comrade Meshack is known for working hard and establishing peace in various areas in KZN, especially around Hammers dale during the difficult time of violence. We are convinced that all of those who have learned from his leadership will emulate him and ensure that his legacy stands on,” said Zikalala On Sunday KwaZuluNatal Provincial Government laid to rest the former chairperson of the ANC and ANC Women's League in Musa Dladla and district mayor of the King Cetshwayo municipality Nonhle Mkhulisi. Mkhulisi died on Thursday after she was hospitalised since December 31 last year. In a statement, KZN MEC for co-operative governance & traditional affairs (Cogta) Sipho Hlomuka described Mkhulisi as a “rare breed” of public representative who helped shape the sphere of local government in our country. “In her, local government in our province has lost a formidable leader who

understood our communities and sought to serve them with integrity until her final days. As a province, we are lost for words, for we have truly lost the best among us,” said Hlomuka. “We have lost a humble servant who worked diligently for the people of our province and the King Cetshwayo district. Her passing leaves a deep void in the sphere of local government in KZN,” added Hlomuka Hlomuka also wished strength and comfort to the families and friends of former struggle stalwart, Alfred Duma. At the time of her passing, Mkhulisi had been serving as

the chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal chapter of the South African Local Government Association (Salga). KZN premier Sihle Zikalala said Mkhulisi was a leader in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide, “Councillor Mkhulisi was one of the most exemplary leaders who was unflinching in tackling the challenges of development, especially for our rural communities. A former MP and of the provincial legislature, she was one of the most honest, hardworking and committed servants of the people of KwaZulu-Natal,” said Zikalala.

Proteas slip in ICC Test rankings after Pakistan series defeat

The Proteas have slipped in ICC Test team rankings after losing the two-match Test series against Pakistan. Chasing 370 to win, the Proteas were bowled out for 274 as Pakistan won the

second test in Rawalpindi by 95 runs. Pakistan sealed the two-match series 2-0 after also winning the first Test by seven wickets in Karachi. This is Pakistan's second Test series win over South Africa, with the first occurring in a tw-match series in 2003. The Proteas dropped one spot to sixth on 89 points as Pakistan jumped two spots to fifth with 90 points. The Proteas Test squad and a few management staff will return to South Africa this week, as originally planned, despite Australia calling off this month's three-match Test series. The two teams will now play three-match T20 series on 11, 13 and 14 February in Lahore.

Former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks dies at 67 F o r m e r w o r l d heavyweight boxing champion Leon Spinks, who took the crown from Muhammad Ali in 1978 before losing a rematch, died last Friday. He was 67 Spinks had been hospitalised in December in Las Vegas before losing a five-year battle with cancer with his wife, Brenda Spinks, at his side. According to a statement released from The Firm PR, “Spinks final fight was fought with the same skill, grace and grit that had carried him through so many lifetime challenges. Leon fought his battle with numerous illnesses resiliently, never losing his trade smile. Showing true Spinks determination, he never threw in the towel “. Spinks finished his career 26-17 with three draws and 14 knockouts, but struggled to try and recapture the fame that came early in his career in one of the most shocking upsets in boxing history. With his trademark gaptoothed grin, Spinks fought his way to Olympic gold in 1976 as a USS light heavyweight in Montreal and turned professional six months later at the age 23. After only eight professional fights, seven wins and a draw, Spinks was

sent into the ring against iconic Ali on February 15, 1978 at the Las Vegas Hilton. Spinks captured a 15round split decision over a 36-year-old Ali, who lost world crowns in the ring for the only time in his career, falling to 55-3 as Spinks claimed the heavyweight title in the shortest time of any fighter in history, only 13 months after his pro debut. It would be the greatest moments of his career. Seven months later, in a rematch before 70 000 at the Superdome in New Orleans, a fit and formidable Ali won a unanimous 15-round decision in what would be the final victory of his legendary career, making Ali the first three-time champion in heavyweight history. Spinks had been stripped of the World Boxing Council crown for taking the rematch with Ali rather than face the mandatory challenger Ken Norton, so the second fight was only for the World Boxing Association title. Spinks lost his next fight as well but earned another shot at the crown in 1981
