ILembe District remains a hotspot for Covid-19 fresh&easy

remier of KwaZulu-Natal Hon. Sihle Zikalala, on Sunday 07 June 2020, gave an update on the Covid-19 situation in the province. EThekwini Metro and ILembe District continue to contribute more than 80% of the total cases provincially (2 465). The province of KwaZulu Natal has seen a rise in Covid-19 cases. Speaking to the media, Sihle Zikalala stated that Ilembe District and Ethekwini Metro remain hotspots in the province. "The districts of ILembe and EThekwini continue to remain the hotspots, judging by the numbers of people infected and by the incidence risk. The overall incidence risk for the province was 13.8 per 100 000 populations, calculated using active cases. ILembe District has the highest incidence risk, at 47,4 per 100 000; while EThekwini shows an incidence risk of 26,1 per 100 000," said Zikalala. He further touched on the opening of schools where he said there will be no compromise to the safety of learners and teachers. "Out of 6 148 schools, it is pleasing to report that over 6044 schools are now ready to re-open tomorrow (Monday) because all the non-negotiables have been met. A total of 104 schools are not yet ready and will therefore have a delayed opening. The department has procured the PPEs and other essentials for the next six months. Head Office will keep a reserve stock to accommodate any eventuality and will deploy visors, masks and disinfectants when required. Every learner and teacher will be screened as they enter the school premises and data will be captured relating to temperature, co-morbidities, and all the critical information relating to COVID-19 pandemic," said Zikalala.

SA's Covid-19 cases increase South Africa now has over 50 800 confirmed cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus and over 1000 deaths, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced on Monday night. There have now been 50 879 positive cases since KZN's Patient Zero in March. Data released by Mkhize showed that there were just under one million Covid-19 tests which had been conducted in the country. Mkhize said a total of just over 940 000 tests had been conducted in the public and private sector, with 22 000 tests conducted in the past 24 hours. Monday's death tally showed that there were 82 more Covid-19 deaths recorded, with 55 of the deceased coming from the Western Cape. "This brings the total national deaths to 1080 with a mortality rate of 2,1%. We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased," said Mkhize.

Metair contract deal will create 3300 new jobs Metair has secured multiple contracts to support Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa's investment and production expansion programme. The deal is expected to create 3300 jobs and see the JSE-listed international manufacturer and distributor of energy storage solutions and automotive components spend up to nearly R1billion to tool up. This formed part of Ford's investment and production expansion programme ahead of new vehicle launches for the local market and to meet the demands of its exportdriven business.

Metair plans to invest more than R900million to tool up for the expansion. The investment approved by Metair's board was its largest to date for a single customer, and more than 3300 jobs were expected to be created, with the largest portion in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Total funding requirements were estimated at R1.3bn for Metair, while more than R900m would be invested in property, plant and equipment. This included construction of a new manufacturing facility in KwaDukuza in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

A new logistics facility would be established in Silverton, Gauteng, where Ford's manufacturing plant was located. Metair's Hesto Harnesses would be the largest beneficiary in the new contracts, supplying a range of wire harnesses, but a number of other subsidiaries would also support Ford, including Unitrade, Automould and Lumotech, with a variety of wires, plastic and chrome-plated parts, as well as headlights and taillights. Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel said Metair

had made big strides in the international automotive sector, “and we will continue to support industries that drive technology and skills transfer, but also create employment opportunities over the long term”. In response to the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic across the automotive industry, Metair had developed Vision 2022, which would shape its recovery by leveraging OEMs' new model launches, as well as planned stimulus measures from various governments and industry associations globally. -IOL

Standardise Rates and Tariffs

Recent articles in newspapers and on social media platforms regarding proposed municipal increases in rates and taxes in the midst of the Covid 19 pandemic prompts me to offer input. It is sadly indicative of the current state of our country especially those whom we have entrusted to manage our civic affairs. Phrases and terms such as “political and social elite” ring true when councillors and municipal management display their wanton disconnect with communities they represent. Perhaps this is due to the flawed expectation that, despite prevailing conditions and circumstances, annual salary increases and bonuses must still be effected. It beggars belief that there should be the slightest consideration of increases in both rates and salaries in such strained social and economic times. It is even more inconceivable that individual metros and municipalities will unilaterally approve their own rates and tariff increases creating economic disparities in various cities and towns. This lends credence to the argument that rates and tariffs should ideally be standardised either nationally, provincially or by classification as metros, districts and towns. In a 2017 comparative study of KZN municipalities, major differences and anomalies were found regarding policies and tariffs adopted for rates, electricity, water and other charges. Uniformity will also result in other benefits including that of promoting the best and most cost-effective business practices, enhanced measurement of municipal performance and improved service delivery by allowing municipalities to focus on their core civic functions and objectives. Further, the processes of property valuations, objections and appeals which consume considerable time and effort will be centralised rather than be devolved to local government.
