Government feels the KDM prioritises youth pressure over petrol hike development
By Xpress Reporter
The recent increase of fuel prices has left KwaDukuza motorists furious and they are pointing fingers at the president. Last week petrol prices hit a record high as both grades of fuel 93 and 95 (ULP & ULRP) increased by a hefty 82c a litre. On the other hand, diesel 0.05% sulphur and diesel 0.005% sulphur will increase by 85c and 87c a litre respectively. On 07 July 2018 President Cyril Ramaphosa paid a visit to KwaDukuza to officially launch 'Thuma Mina' campaign. He uttered that as government they are working tirelessly to implement economic measures to cushion the fuel and vat hike. “Because we are a responsive government, I have tasked ministers in the economic cluster to come up with a package of economic measures to cushion the public from the crippling effects of high fuel price hikes, the VAT increase and rates and taxes. I have given them two weeks to come up with measures on how we can ease the burden of our people,” emphasized Ramaphosa.
BOWSER: Recent petrol prices hit a record high
One of the motorists interviewed by Xpress Times, Shanil Singh stated that government is scamming the poor. “This country is slowly becoming unreasonable to live in. Increase of petrol affects me but not so much because I can afford. The government should think about people on the ground level who use public transport every day. Automatically taxi or bus fares go up if petrol prices go up. This is ridiculous, it's a burden to people who are living a basic
lifestyle,” said Singh. Below are fuel savings tips during this difficult time • Remove the roof rack or ski box • Accelerate smoothly (Don't push the accelerator down too far) • Don't drive in the rush hour • Make fewer trips • Close the windows (and sunroof, if you've got one) • Don't carry around unnecessary weight
The KwaDukuza Municipality's Youth, Sports and Gender portfolio committee held a meeting on 6 July 2018 at the KwaDukuza Council Chamber to discuss recommendations that require council approval. KwaDukuza Municipality will launch the eThembeni sports against crime campaign. “KwaDukuza Municipality, together with the ILembe Department Sports and Recreation (DSR) are to provide various opportunities for athletes and citizens to play sports and also use sports as an instrument for human development. Sports has influence to bring people together, this can be used for good purposes, and can be utilised as a way to pass messages to the community. The campaign will play a role in building responsible communities. “The campaign will have a huge impact in KwaDukuza since it has been identified by the SAPS report that eThembeni and surrounding areas are crime hot spots. The program will include surrounding wards such as Ward 11 and Ward 12 to participate in Soccer, Netball and Aerobics.” The campaign will
be held at Chief Albert Luthuli Sports Complex, on 21 July 2018 at 08H00 The Municipality also encourages matric classes. “ T h e Yo u t h a n d S p o r t s Development Section has implemented the Matric Extra Classes Programme which will be staged for 3 months, that is July, August and September. There are still discussions to continue the programme until the beginning of the final examinations. The following schools will benefit from this initiative: • ML Sultan - who received 61.2% in the previous examination • Imbuyiselo Secondary - who received 59.6% in the previous examination • Lethithemba Secondary - who received 53.8% in the previous examination • Shekembula Secondary - who received 45.0% in the previous examination • Qoqulwazi Secondary - who received 43.1% in the previous examination • Guzana Secondary - who received 36.3% in the previous examination”

KwaDukuza Helping Hands Mandela Day launch KwaDukuza Helping Hands will officially launch its committee, vision and manifesto on Mandela Day, 18 July 2018. The birth of this organisation was the brainchild and initiative of a few members who frequent the Quartz Conference Centre in Stanger Manor for meetings, karaoke and family socializing. This, then enabled them to operate as a
close knit family. This initiative is supported whole-heartedly by mayor of KwaDukuza, His Worship Councillor Ricardo Mthembu. Tarzan Naicker, who is the interim coordinator of this group stated, “When we were approached regarding assisting Sashni Daniels, we were also approached by other parents whose children
are medically on the critical list. We then formed KwaDukuza Helping Hands, solely with the intention of helping these children. Our mandate and vision is to assist these children and their families where parents are unemployed and these children have no medical aid. When these parents feel that they have reached the end and have nowhere to go, we
are here for them.” “We are thankful to Pravesh and Vashi Hurripersad of the Quartz Conference Centre who have allowed us to use the Quartz as our headquarters. This group now consists of more than 750 WhatsApp members who are very supportive of this venture and we are thankful to them. We have initiated a few fund drives which have been
very successful.” Naicker added that the KDHH will officially launch on Mandela Day at the Quartz Conference Centre. The program will include the clean-up of the Manor business precinct, food, curio, clothing and various other stalls. Volunteers will be attending to especially the elderly with free blood, pressure and eye testing. Beauty, make-up
and body pampering and massaging will also be available. People should take advantage of this opportunity and visit the Quartz Conference Centre. The event will commence at around 3pm and should terminate at around 8pm. Stalls are limited so kindly book yours now. Volunteers may also call the same number. Cell: 072 726 5357, 076 505 6825, 083 573 3448.

Immigrant deported by KwaDukuza SAPS
Local councillor accused of assault
By Xpress Reporter
By Xpress Reporter
The Ngcobo Police Station attack in February, which claimed the lives of 5 police officers, has led to KwaDukuza SAPS always being on the lookout for suspicious individuals. According to KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson, Constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo, on Thursday 5 July 2018, KwaDukuza deported a Mozambique national who has been sleeping at the entrance of the police station. “I manually deported an 'MP' who has been sleeping at our police station gate for three months. He tells us that he came here to South Africa for 'Lotto' referring to disability grant. I went to Home Affairs yesterday and the deportation officer told me that he knows the man who has a Mozambique passport and ID and he is unable to deport him since he is mentally challenged because the court will throw the case out because of his condition,” said Khuzwayo. “I liaised with my station commander and so many things came up in our conversation that maybe this person is in surveillance and pretends to be mentally disturbed and we can expect to be attacked like Ngcobo SAPS. She then linked me up with Colonel Saunders and I drove to the Border post. Captain Mzileni linked me up with Mozambique police and the handing over was done,” concluded Khuzwayo.
A Nyathikazi resident has e x p r e s s e d h i s disappointment and humiliation after he was allegedly assaulted by a local ward councillor. Sabelo Ntenga alleges that the ANC councillor attempted to run him over with his vehicle. “The councillor drove past my house and tried to knock my friend and me. He then went to his house to park his car and I went to alert my brother. The councillor walked back to us, armed with a gun. He punched me and I fell to the ground,” said Ntenga. Ntenga claims that he went inside to inspect his wound

caused by the punch, only to return to find his friend allegedly being assaulted by the councillor and his family. “When the assault was over, I took my friend to the police station to open a case.” KwaDukuza SAPS Spokesperson, Constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo confirmed that a case of assault has been opened. Speaking to the Xpress Times, the councillor alleged that he was attacked by Ntenga and his friend, and only produced his firearm to defend himself. “I was attacked by them. They blocked my driveway with large stems and when I tried to remove it, one of
them attacked me. I pushed him and he fell to the ground. One of his friends came to assist him and I pushed him back. They tried to attack me and I protected myself by pulling out my gun. Then they backed off and I escaped,” said the councillor. He added that the community came to his assistance and then assaulted Ntenga and his friend. “I applied for a protection order against them.” He alleges that the incident is “politically motivated.” “This started in January. They have tried to blackmail me and intimidate me. This is just to blackmail me,” said the accused councillor.

England thrive in SWC 'bubble' ahead of Croatia semi As excitement builds in England in the run-up to the country's first Soccer World Cup semi-final for 28 years, midfielder Dele Alli insists Gareth Southgate's team are keeping a cool head in their tournament "bubble". England's matches so far in Russia have attracted huge television audiences at home and wild celebrations, with affable coach Gareth Southgate and his vibrant young squad capturing the hearts of a nation. In sharp contrast to the feverish atmosphere, Alli and his team-mates are in relaxed mood in the sleepy seaside resort of Repino, 45 kilometres
northwest of Saint Petersburg. "You are in your own little bubble when here training camp, coming back, getting ready for the next game. It is not

until you look at social media and the internet that you realise how big it is," Alli said on Monday. "Obviously we know we are playing in the World Cup, in the semi-
final. We are so focused on the games that you forget what we have done so far. "It is important that we stay like that, keep going and hopefully we achieve something to make it even more special to get to the final and win it." Alli scored his first World Cup goal as England cruised into the last four with a 2-0 win over Sweden on Saturday. A much tougher test is expected in Moscow on Wednesday against a Croatia side that swept past Argentina in the group stages and boasts the midfield talents of Real Madrid's Luka
Modric and Ivan Rakitic of Barcelona. But while many pundits and even England fans are surprised by their progress, Alli says the squad always believed they could go far. "We had to believe and we know how talented we are as a squad," he added. "We know we have some unbelievable players and a great manager and everyone is clear on what we want to do. "When you have such a solid foundation, you have the basics and clear understanding of what we want to do and achieve, it's not a surprise that it's going well for us."

BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE This weekend will see the business end of the 2018 World Cup extravaganza that began more than a month ago. What a roller coaster ride it has been with the notso-popular teams making the last eight and no team from the bastion of world football, South America, the home of 9 world cups shared amongst Brazil (5), Argentina (2) and Uruguay (2), advancing to the next round. With a population of fewer than 4 million Uruguay has punched well over its weight, reaching the

quarter-finals, only to be without their main strikeforce, the injured Edinson Cavani, and losing to France. The other semi-finalists are Belgium, Croatia and England who with their no-name brand (except Harry Kane) of players has done well to have reached this stage. They will meet Croatia today (Wed) while France met Belgium yesterday (Tues). Whoever reaches the final, it will be a cracker as these teams deserve to be there. For me, the outstanding feature has been, in the main, the attacking and openminded nature of the teams with less emphasis on defensive systems which has led to attractive contests as well as spectacular goals. Some of these will remain etched in the memory for years to come. To pick one as the best will be a discredit to the others. Let each individual imagine that the one in his/her mind is the best. Here the words of John Keats are most
apt : "Heard memories are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter." The first semi-final sees the best of continental Europe in action. To add spice to the encounter, former French icon, Thierry Henry, will be plotting the downfall of his country as a member of the Belgian bench. This irony is not lost on Didier Deschamps, the France coach, who was Henry's teammate in the 1998 triumph. But no enmity exists between them as each awaits the outcome with eager anticipation. The second match between England and Croatia depends on the direct football played by England against the classical and creative style of the Croats led by Luka Modric. An open match is expected. The finalists are difficult to predict. With the many surprises thus far, any two can play the ultimate match. May the best team win and it could even be England ! Another major sporting event comes to an end on
Sunday. At Wimbledon, after a whole host of upsets, very few seeded players in both the Men's and Women's sections have proceeded to the last 16. However, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are still around while Simona Halep, the Women's number one seed exited on Saturday. Serena Williams, the perennial quarter-finalist and 8 times champion, makes the last 16 and is expected to be in the finals come Saturday. Some exciting and interesting tennis is on the cards for the rest of the week. The last word. The introduction of the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system in the 2018 World Cup has brought with it all the attendant controversies. At the end of almost every match panels of experts have dissected the rulings of the VAR. My humble opinion is that it is a positive addition to ensure that the correct decision is made in an environment

free of the emotive reaction of players and spectators and the onfield referee being under pressure. But my grouse is the undue influence that the players exert on the referee. FIFA has to include in its rules that players should have no communication with the referee when he is considering consultation of the VAR. Presently, referees are being badgered by players who surround them to try and influence their judgement. What is worse and distasteful is players asking the referee to issue a red or yellow card. Although the stakes are high, let there be a semblance of sportsmanship at the highest level. Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.
