waDukuza Municipality (KDM) is improving its relations with the community of Groutville, eThembeni following a protracted protest that resulted in damages amounting to at least R4.8 million. They are discussing several major issues and addressing some of the concerns to stoke up delivery of the Groutville Priority 2 housing project where construction was halted for at least two weeks and to normalize the impasse between the community and stakeholders on site, appointed by Council to develop the project. According to KDM, they are achieving this with a series of intense engagements and other measures that have been put to place by Council. Recently, the Groutville N2 and the R102 were barricaded and blocked. Site offices

The homes are however not yet completed due to delays in the roll-out of ablution facilities. KDM has arrived at the

following decisions in a bid to establish lasting solution to the logjam and to ensure that there is stability and service delivery is accelerated to further promote good relations with the community: • Damage to property has been reported to the relevant authorities, including law enforcement agencies, for further investigation. • The main contractor will go back on site, where additional security will be required to protect assets and staff.

• Council notes various claims that the contractor has put regarding the extension of time, damage to her property on site and other costs that will be associated with the project including a beef up on security. • Council approves the allocation of houses without toilets provided the beneficiary consents to this in writing. • The extension of time will be dealt with in line with the general conditions of contract.

• The claims against the contractor assets and loss of building materials are being forwarded to insurers. • Accounting Officer is granted the authority to waive the performance guarantee in lieu of retention money that is held by the municipality and also the fact that the contractor has another contract with council. • Council notes the reestablishment of the site will take time and also has its own cost implications.

Mandeni Mayor responds to construction call

Forceful tremor leaves locals shaken

By Xpress Reporter

SERVICE DELIVERY: The Honourable Mandeni Mayor, Councillor SB Zulu (centre) with roleplayers

The Mandeni Mayor, Cllr SB Zulu has responded positively to the community outcry regarding potholes and unroadworthy conditions in Sundumbili Township on Monday. The initiative comes after a series of complains about the road conditions of Bhidla and Dark city roads found in ward 7 and 15 respectively. His Worship

has finally introduced Premier Attraction Civils, as one of the constructors that will be responsible for the renewal and resurfacing of both ward 15 and ward 7 roads. In this regard two introductory meetings were held at Sundumbili HP School and Sibusisiwe Hall. In these meetings, Cllr Zulu announced R7, 3

million will be allocated to reconstruct Bhidla, Usiba and Amajuba road under ward 15 and Ilanga, Intuthuko and Umkhaya road under ward 7. Despite his introduction of the contractors, Cllr Zulu, also ensured the community members who came in large numbers to witness the introduction, that these

roads will be constructed with qualitative material. “As part of building capacity into our emerging contractors, we wish to encourage local SMME's to bring their company profiles and identify their area of strength so they can grow their business in future,” the Mayor said. Mandeni Municipality has

in the past few years tarred almost 35 kilometres in Sundumbili Township and all roads are now black top and few needed resurfacing with quality material. The Mandeni Mayor emphasised that ratepayers need to pay for municipal services for the community to live better with state of the art amenities.

Tremors within Ilembe have now found common place with residents as it relates to the major one felt by many locals on Saturday at 11:03am. According to the US Geological Survey, the tremor was a 3.8 magnitude on the Richter scale. (instrument used to measure tremors). This particular tremor was felt even in the CBD with social media exploding with accounts from Glenhills, MorningSide, Stanger Manor and as far as Isipingo. Even false messages made the rounds. One Glenhills resident estimated that the tremor lasted 20 seconds and claimed how furniture in his room was “vibrating.” Previous reports by this publication noted tremors taking place on Tuesday, 16 June 2015 at 5:23 and another tremor on the afternoon of Monday, 13 July 2015 at 6:30pm.

Darnall residents have expressed their frustration with the untidy state of the area, claiming that refuse has not been cleared out for about a year. Community Activist, Mr Roy

Naidoo is one of the residents who has resorted to burning the refuse himself. “It's been one year and the refuse has still not been removed. I'm burning the grass by myself on my lawn,” said Naidoo. He added that he has spoken to

officials, to no avail. “This used to be a town, now it's a forest,” said Naidoo. Another resident claims that she approached officials at the KwaDukuza Municipality in December last year, and was told that the issue would be addressed.

Whom to believe Themba Makhoba alleges that he and a friend, Lucky Mthembu, were accosted by a group of six youths who threatened them with a firearm. Both men were allegedly assaulted. Between the two men, the gang took R10 800 cash which they had hidden in their rooms. Police arrested one of the culprits a week later and he alleges that he merely took the money that the two had taken from him. The Easter eggs were distributed to children in 12 underprivileged schools in the Umhlali area. This year we are hoping to collect 300 boxes. Umhlali SAPS is requesting you to sponsor Easter eggs / chocolate bunnies in order to make this event a success and to put a smile on a child's face. We are aiming to give each child

in 21 underprivileged schools the eggs / bunnies for Easter. The Easter eggs can be dropped off at Umhlali SAPS by 11-03-2016 at the Station Commanders office. Distribution will be done on 16-032016. If need be, the station can also fetch Easter eggs. For more information contact: W/O Vinny Pillay: 073 3100 103 (Coordinator) / Nicole: 032 947 9900 (Station Commander's Office, Room 4)

Public private partnership in education The Office of the Premier and Standard Bank held a Back to School campaign in iLembe on Friday, 5 February 2015. Tshana and Tugela High Schools were visited where uniforms and cleaning material were handed over to deserving learners. Mbusi Sokhela of DJ Sox handed over school uniforms before taking the learners through what he described as the darkest years of his life.

The popular DJ, who is a recovering drug addict, spoke about substance abuse, peer pressure and the importance of education. DJ Sox abused drugs and alcohol for seven years and has been clean for the past two. He urged learners to not drop out of school in a quest for the glitz and glamour that is the showbiz. “Your favourite celebrities went to school. I am a qualified engineer and so is DJ C'ndo who is actually from here in Mandeni. Black Coffee and Zakes Bantwini Next to Nishal’s Café studies music in Durban and majored in Jazz. If you feel like music is what Shop No. 12 you want to do, don't make that an Madressa Arcade excuse for you to drop out. You will King Shaka Street 071 846 7752 / 073 527 7675 need education to see you through so you don't get exploited. You will have people who will want to take advantage of you and if you can't even read a contract, they will take advantage of you,” he said.

The Operation Sukuma Sakhe Cabinet Day was held in Maphumulo, in the Ilembe District Municipality recently. Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) is a provincial programme that was founded on the premise of taking government to the people in a coordinated manner. "Sukuma Sakhe" is a Zulu phrase which means (stand up and build.) MECs, Head of Departments, Ilembe local Municipality Mayors' and other dignitaries were deployed in various wards within Maphumulo to visit communities and listen to their challenges/problems and to also visit government projects to see if they are functional. The Sabuyaze Sport Ground in Maphumulo played host to the likes of the Ilembe Champion MEC, the MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation in the province, Mrs Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha, iLembe Mayor, Cllr Welcome Mdabe, the Head of Department for KZN COGTA Mrs Nonhlanhla Qhobosheane and other dignitaries. MEC Sibhidla-Saphetha and her team visited Vukile High School whose Matric Results in 2015 improved from 89.41% in 2014 to 90.45%. The team thereafter went to handover a combo court to Woza Primary School where their netball team showed off their skills much to the delight of the MEC. The community was able to engage with the ward councillor, Mayor Mdabe and MEC SibhidlaSaphetha saying they were happy with government and said “service delivery was clearly visible with many areas without electricity and water now having connections as well as the construction of low cost housing for many who lived in undesirable dwellings.” The community asked Mayor Mdabe for assistance with their vegetable farming projects and their details were taken down to forward to the Municipality's development agency Enterprise Ilembe which works with cooperatives in the region to supply national supermarkets and schools with vegetables.

2016 Local Government Election needs experienced leaders A leader of a ward should be like a shepherd followed by his sheep on their way to greener pastures. But today our political leaders take the sheep to dry pastures and put green goggles (false promises) on them to see dry pastures (poor service delivery) as promising. How can services be delivered only when elections are threatening. Food parcels, t-shirts, shisa nyama and drinks are given once in 5 years just before elections and then we stay foodless, without clothes, jobless and service-less until the next 5 years. We can't be fooled like kids anymore so that we cast our votes for leaders who only serve their own interests. Let the masses decide through the ballot who should lead them. A true leader will serve others before serving his own interests. Democracy calls for experienced leaders and leaders for the good. But our democracy seems to be a hobby horse rocking in the same place taking us nowhere. Where there is poor or no proper leadership, society stands still. We need wise leaders with experience and honour to guarantee our wards and the country's future. S.A is swarming with aimless, highly educated, unemployed youth. If nothing is done to address growing youth employment this country is surely doomed it will cause destruction that will take years to repair. Where are the jobs our president once promised hopeful, graduated youth? Mr President, our unemployed youth are like starving chicks hoping to get a grain of job. I am saying, if you find water rising up to your ankles, that's the time to do something about it, not when its around your neck. The quality of leadership is very important in our wards. With experienced quality leadership, service delivery, employment, health, education and housing would be addressed. Please register to vote on 5th and 6th March. Candidates and leaders, be a shepherd followed by your sheep on their way to greener pastures. Good luck! God bless South Africa. Political and Community Activist Roy Naidoo - Darnall

Ratepayers’ Association not strictly “Halaal” Contrary to popular belief, regarding letters that appeared in the Sunday Tribune (Page 15; 7 February 2015) and the Bugle (a community newspaper); it seems the author, Amanda Noxolo Magwaza is misleading the community or herself being mislead. The following article which appeared in the Xpress Times (Page 7; 6 November 2015) should put paid to her idle chatter

“I read about the antiracism march in Ballito… Why Ballito?” I read your newspaper every week. I am just a simple, ordinary man. I did not complete my matric, I do not own a car or a house. I have an ordinary job and live an ordinary life. I do believe in God very much though. I read about the anti-racism march in Ballito. The first question was Why Ballito? Are they racists? The Mayor, who matriculated at Pinetown Boys High School (if memory serves me correct) was at the forefront of this march. I want to know is there a difference between racism and hatred? Many people hate what others do. Eg, urinating in public places, behaving badly in public, etc. if a person of another race group hates these acts, are they racist? I do not mean to labour this topic, but, if the Mayor led a march against the dirty state of our town, I would support him fully. If he ensured action for all his concerns (eg. His anger about drugs more recently) I would support him. If he engaged with ordinary people like me, I would respect him. If he made sure my ward councillor delivered services to my community, I would believe in him. You see, Sir, none of this is happening. Have those in charge seen the gathering of groups of people at the Checkers parking lot and SADTU Park in the evenings openly drinking liquor, urinating all over the place, playing loud music till late at night or the filthy state of Balcomb Street and King Street once you pass Lindley Street? Am I racist to pick on this? Before you jump down my throat go and see what is happening there. Before you answer me, I am also from the same race group as my brothers and sisters whose social behaviour is questionable. Why can't we all live in peace and harmony? An ordinary man This week sees quotes from Oliver Reginald Tambo who was born on 27 October 1917. In 1940 he, along with several others including Nelson Mandela, was expelled from Fort Hare University for participating in a student strike. In 1942 Tambo returned to his former high school in Johannesburg to teach science and mathematics. Tambo, along with Mandela and Walter Sisulu, were the founding members of the ANC Youth League in 1943, becoming its first National Secretary and later a member of the National Executive in 1948. - Wikipedia

Mahatma Gandhi My Hero

The recent article in the North Coast Courier demeaning world icon Mahatma Gandhi cannot go unchallenged. Nelson Puckree has now become the mouthpiece of the ANC which smacks of political opportunism just before the local government elections. His assertion that Gandhi has done nothing for the town and would lobby to change Mahatma Gandhi Street to Vivian Reddy Street and give him the freedom of the town is poorly conceived with a political agenda which will backfire. We acknowledge the contribution made by Vivien Reddy toward development of the town and helping the poor but to rubbish Gandhi's contribution to our country and the world through non-violence campaigns has been recognised throughout the world including KwaDukuza. His spirit and enormous efforts to build the nation in times of injustice was prevalent and endured great suffering through the system brought about the transformation agenda we enjoy today. We also know Vivien Reddys close association with the ANC and won millions of rands of tenders through an open process including the development of the Golf Course. I am hopeful Viven Reddy will distance himself from the unwanted controversy and will not stoop so low wanting recognition for his contribution. Cllr Madhun Sobram Sing KwaDukuza

“Racism…Get a life”

To those that participated in the anti racism march in Ballito for other reasons please take note of the following. Please do some homework by doing a walk about next time you are shopping. I can tell you that 80 percent of the people from previously disadvantaged backgrounds are employed by Ballito chain stores like DisChem, Edgars, Lifestyle SuperSpar, Mr Price Store etc. etc. I thought to myself that maybe the protesters and those involved want a 100 percent of people from previously disadvantaged backgrounds employed exclusively. The advantaged will now be disadvantaged and so on and so forth. Is this anti-racism just an election ploy for the upcoming local election. Racism ended 22 years ago so please get a life! Let us strive for equal rights for all South Africans. Thabiso Z KwaDukuza

World Cancer Day By Xpress Reporter

World Cancer Day takes place every year on 4 February to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008. The primary goal of the World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer by 2020. Cancer is the uncontrolled growth and spread of cells. It can affect almost any part of the body. The growths often invade surrounding tissue and can spread to distant sites. This initiative unites the world under a single theme to highlight the on-going fight against cancer. World Cancer Day aims to reduce the number of preventable deaths

"The fight for freedom must go on until it is won; until our country is free and happy and peaceful as part of the community of man, we cannot rest." "Using the power you derive from the discovery of the truth about racism in South Africa, you will help us to remake our part of the world into a corner of the globe on which all - of which all of humanity can be proud."

each year by raising cancer awareness amongst the general public and pressing governments to take further actions against the disease. Urgent action needs to be taken to raise awareness about the disease and to develop practical strategies to address the cancer burden. Global disparities in access to prevention, treatment and palliative care are growing exponentially. World Cancer Day is the ideal opportunity to spread the word and raise the profile of cancer in people's minds, in the world's media, and on the global health and development agenda. Taking place under the tagline 'We can. I can.', World Cancer Day 20162018 will explore how everyone as a collective or as individuals can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer.

"We have a vision of South Africa in which black and white shall live and work together as equals in conditions of peace and prosperity." "We are not fighting against people, we are fighting against a system." We seek to create a united Democratic and non-racial society.

Don't let poverty rob you of your dreams thanks to DR MAMA LATIFAH my suffering is gone!!! My name is Sharif living in Phoenix. I wish I knew Mama Latifah before and I would have never wasted a lot money on wrong doctors, sangomas and herbalists. It was hard to trust after losing everything including my business and my houses. Then I saw MAMA LATIFAH testimony and I decided to call her then she gave me different ways to get money and I chose magic wallet and my sister chose rats which helped her to pay all her debts so we are all living a happy life thanks to MAMA LATIFAH

THANKS MAMA LATIFAH FOR MY HUSBAND HE CAME BACK AND KNELT DOWN FOR ME & APOLOGISED. My name is Rahma am 35 years old living in Phoenix. I was happily married with 2 kids but a problem came when my husband started drinking. He even got a new young lady who was 23 years old. The house became a mess as we started fighting everyday. He could beat me every time I could talk about his girl friend and the way he was drinking. Because of his beating me too much I went to the police, he then decided leaving home and he could only come back the days he wanted. I could cry alone in the house with my kids. I tried some doctors but they all didn’t work so I knew that the end of my life upto when a friend of mine came home and found me crying, I told her my problems she directed me to Mama Latifah who helped me bring back my husband. You can’t believe but my husband knelt for me asking for my forgiveness, right now no more drinking no more fighting in the house. We are a happy family again. Thanks to Mama Latifah

KwaDukuza Athletic Club kicked off their 2016 running season when they participated in the DG Panel and Paint Challenge that took place in Sydenham this past Sunday. Amid humid conditions, runners from KDAC were excited to kick start their season as they have been preparing long and hard since the beginning of the year. The course proved to be very tricky as it consisted of hilly and humid conditions but all KDAC runners managed to finish. The toast of KDAC's runners was undoubtedly veteran runner Dippy Moodley who scooped first prize in his age category and collected the prize money of R100. He completed the gruelling 32km run in an incredible 3:40. Others that participated and completed the 32km run were Jaibalan Soobramoney (3:31) and Paddy Padayachee (3:49). Nikeyi 'Iron Man Jawaan' Maarbeel was not to be outdone as he race through the 16km event in 1:45.

Dawnheights trounce East Coast

Dawnheights Cricket Club's winning streak in the KZN Challenge league (Stream II) continued on Sunday when they trounced East Coast by 37 runs in an away fixture. Dawnheights have now set their sights on clinching the Challenge stream II league and gain promotion into stream I thus joining their counterparts, iLembe Cricket Club. Dawnheights won the toss and

elected to bat first scoring 210/9 in their allotted 50 on a slow batting strip. Resistance was shown by youngster Adesh Bageloo who compiled 42 and was assisted by Arun Kumar who made 32. East Coast were bowled out in the 44th over, thanks to the exceptional bowling of man-of-the-match, Arun Kumar who claimed 4 wickets conceding just 32 runs.

Dawnheights remain on course to clinch the KZN Challenge League

Gledhow receives major boost

Gledhow United ecstatic with sponsorship from Neelans Auto

At the start of the 2016 darts season, Gledhow United Darts Club were over the moon when they secured a major sponsorship deal with Neelan's Auto. Due to the sponsorship, Gledhow United will now ply their trade in the KwaDukuza Darts Association as

Neelans Auto Gledhow for 2016. Players and management of Gledhow United were delighted and expressed their gratitude to the proprietors of Neelans Auto for their magnanimous gesture and promoting the game of darts in KwaDukuza.

Ashraffiya down Warriors Sport In an iLembe and District Cricket Union T20 league game played on Saturday, Ashraffiya Cricket Club stunned their more illustrious counterparts, Warriors Sport Cricket Club. Warriors chose to bat first after winning the toss and compiled 97 runs in their allotted 20 overs. S. Omehan top scored with 25 for Warriors and he was ably assisted by Sandile who scored 14. However the majority of Warriors runs was due to the wayward bowling of Ashraffiya

who conceded 32 runs as extras. The pick of the bowlers for Ashraffiya were Luqman Moosaji who claimed 4 wickets for 21 runs whilst Hamza Ismail claimed 3 scalps for a paltry 11 runs. Ashraffiya surpassed the score in 14.4 overs compiling 98/7. Brothers Ahmed Hansa and Zakarriyah Hansa topped scored with 32 and 24 respectively with veteran Mo Ganie contributing 15. The stand out bowler for Warriors was Sikander who claimed 3 wickets for a miserly 9 runs

Padayachee to lead KDDA

Veteran darts campaigner and South African champ, Sham Padayachee was elected as President of the KwaDukuza Darts Association at the Annual General Meeting held at the Quartz Conference centre last Wednesday. Others elected on the executive were Charlie Pillay (vice president), Paddy Padayachee (Financial Director), Jerry Govender (Executive), Jodie Naidoo (Development Officer), Nine Pillay (Tournament Director), Ashley Haripershad (Public Relations Officer) and Vinesh Geanballey (Executive). In his secretarial report, secretary of KDDA, Rajen Pillay thanked the proprietors of the Quartz

A decline in membership was noted. Members need to start recruiting new players, especially previously disadvantaged, ladies and

junior players. We need to go out and advertise our sport to the public so that we can meet our minimum membership target of 75

players as set out by Darts South Africa added Pillay. He thanked the major sponsors Hooblall's, Distel Richelieu, Trophies & Engravers and KSST Engineering for seeing the league season through. He also thanked all the officials and individuals for having sponsored the rest of the games for the season. He thanked Vishalin Parmasivan and Kevin Naidoo of Reliance Printing Works for their ever willing assistance in sponsoring and printing our presentation tickets. Once again the KDDA team was unsuccessful in bringing back the Gold but nonetheless the national team gave off their best in Johannesburg. This year the Nationals will be played in Bloemfontein.
