Ratepayers lament parking lot makeover By Xpress Reporter

Irate KwaDukuza ratepayers have questioned the decision to refurbish pavements at the corner of Chief Albert Luthuli and Mahatma Gandhi Streets citing that it is an inappropriate development made at their expense. The municipality had vertical parking lots constructed in that portion of the town with the aim of reducing traffic and preventing large vehicles from passing through that area. According to DA Caucus leader, Madhun Sobram Sing the decision to have these lots destroyed in less than three years since they were constructed “is a classic example of fruitless and wasteful expenditure by the municipality. It is clear that they lacked foresight at planning and design stage, thus confronted with the

current problem which will cost the ratepayers hundreds of thousands in restoring the road back to its original glory” said Sing before adding that the business people who criticized the construction of these lots have eventually emerged as winners while the municipality emerged as losers in wasting the ratepayer's money. Sing further urged the municipality to explain to the public how much it will cost to refurbish these lots. “The municipality owes an explanation to the general public, what it will cost to repair the road back to its original form”. An email was sent to KwaDukuza Municipality enquiring about the costs and the decision to go ahead and rebuild these lots but no response has since been offered.

One suspect who was found driving the said vehicle was arrested and charged for possession of property suspected to be stolen. He appeared in the Maphumulo Magistrates' Court on 4 May 2017.” The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the members for the job well done. “We will continue fighting drug related crimes in the province and we need

ILembe District Municipality has seen a number of malls being either built or refurbished in the last three years, huge developments which have since given our region a much needed facelift. In recent weeks however, malls have been a target for a host of criminal activities such as smash and grabs, card cloning and armed robberies to mention a few. Most recent victims of mall criminals include Pavallion Mall in Durban and Pearls Mall in Umhlanga. The Xpress Times contacted Mathew McCormick of McCormick Property

Development, a company which owns Mandeni Mall, and he shared his secret on how malls can be kept safe citing that being in touch with local policing services is crucial. “We, as McCormick Property Development, are aware of the threat posed by criminals throughout our portfolio and we keep the safety and security concerns of our customers and shoppers as a top priority. We have close ties with local SAPS in each of our areas and rely on SAPS, Crime Intelligence, local community structures, CPF as well as our internal security contractor to assist in predicting

and preventing possible attempts. “We welcome any involvement in visible policing by SAPS as we have seen great success when efforts are combined in a coordinated fashion amongst different police and stakeholder structures. Our aim is to provide a safe and secure environment for our customers,” said McCormick. Meanwhile, South African Police Services recently said they will squeeze in on shopping mall crimes and have established a team made up of members from various departments that was formed several weeks ago to tackle the rise in shopping mall crimes.

Celebrating International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every year on 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. The International Council of Nurses commemorates this important day each year with the production and distribution of the International Nurses' Day (IND) Kit. Nursing is the largest health care profession in the world and nurses are the key to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Nurses are well trained and educated for maintaining the health and wellness of patients. The aim of this event is to increase public awareness about nursing and nurses contribution towards health care.

Nurses are educated to understand the complex nature of maintaining health and wellness, and the impact of psychosocial and socio-economic factors such as poverty, unemployment and ethnicity. They see the context for wellbeing and accordingly act in a way to reach beyond the immediate presenting problems. Nurses have done much towards the achievement of the MDGs and to help shape and deliver sustainable goals and outcomes beyond 2015. The theme for 2017 is “Nurses: A Voice to Lead, Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.”

CARE: International Nurses Day is observed around the world on 12 May

Under siege KwaDukuza is under siege by criminals, elements, vainglorious leadership and inept law enforcement agencies. This is the view of several individuals from across the spectrum. Public toilets are common place with a vacant plot behind the Silverstream building, the vacant plot alongside King Shaka Funeral Services and the area between the green house next to Olympic Car Sales up to the turnoff entering the CBD, in Chief Albert Luthuli Street and the property on the corner of Goolam Suleman and Gizenga Streets being used by pedestrians and motorists daily to relieve themselves without fear of reprisal. These are just some of the "public toilets" available to people. The "entertainment area" at the so called "SADTU PARK” which has no ablution facilities and no fresh running water is used on weekends and public holidays by revelers blasting music, consuming alcohol, obviously using the area as a toilet and one can imagine what else goes on when scantily clad women are part of the scene. Residents alongside this area are fearful to speak out for fear of repercussions. Traffic authorities, police and the local CBD councillors have allowed this scenario to escalate into a freefor-all party zone without taking any tangible steps to address the problem yet when Tambuti Singh cleared the area, opposite their premises to par their vehicles they were subjected to court action and barriers were erected. Why not barricade this area which houses a

Zionist place of worship and a clinic treating patients? A new mode of transport has entered this town - supermarket trolleys are being pushed all over the CBD and outlying areas throughout the day and even at night which is hazardous to motorists. These youth "drive" down the Goolam Suleiman Road with scant regard for authorised road users and pedestrians. With the scarcity of scrap metal, many of these youth now collect plastic and cardboard to sustain their drug habit and can be seen pushing their goods all over the area. These trolleys are expensive and are obviously stolen so why are the relevant law agencies not charging them for being in possession of stolen property? Drug users, drug dealers and car guards are an ongoing topic of concern. With no proper training and skills scores of youth don a green emergency jacket and harass motorists, often regarded as "parking attendants" rather than "car guards". No authority has exercised any oversight rule over these guards which clearly falls under the local traffic authority and local ward councillor. Traffic offences continue unabated despite a bloated crime prevention and traffic department. Stop signs are considered yield signs by many, amber robots are considered green, illegal parking is not a crime and to find a traffic vehicle in the CBD, issuing fines is as rare as finding a fowl with teeth. Prostitution is a delicate issue with sex workers plying their trade freely from the SAPPI turn

off in the early hours of the morning. The residential block around the Roman Catholic Anglican and Jehovah's witness churches are ironically the chief areas of operation at night. It was learnt with glee that police charged four of them for plying their trade under the municipal by laws and the area was silent for two nights. It is now business as usual. Hence again respondents have questioned the role of the law enforcement agencies and CBD Councillor. The filth and grime along the railway premises and illegal business structures is an eyesore and shame to the town. The mechanical repair shops behind the old Luthando Hotel is an embarrassment to any local authority with no health measures in place. Food outlets in this area have boomed and is a frightening sight. Several buildings ought to be condemned due to their condition - yet no one seems to care. The old rhetoric "we have a plan" is like a stuck record. Is the CBD deliberately being allowed to fall into a state of disrepair and neglect? Henry Ford once said, “You cannot build a reputation on what you are going to do.” It is manifestly clear that if allowed to continue unabated this area will become a village that once was. The siege has to stop and until all concerned groupings work together to eradicate the scourges that are leading to the decay of this town, we are in serious trouble. A view from the street

Municipal Services likely to increase up Councillor’s Corner to 10% KDM and Ilembe tariff of charges are set to increase up to 10 % according to the draft budget for the 2017/2018 financial year. At Ilembe significant shift will be that sewer tariff will now be calculated based on valuation of the property instead of consumption based. The new method of calculation should bring some relief to households that were saddled with 70% and 50 % for sewer respectively over the years. In respect of residential properties including sectional title units sewer tariff will be calculated by 0, 0069 cents in the rand on market value while in case of industrial, business and commercial properties the proposed tariff of 0,0232 cents in the rand on market value would apply. At this stage the monthly basic charge would no more apply.

It is important for all affected persons to participate and make input before the final budget with tariff increases will be adopted at the end of May and become applicable from 1 July 2017. While further consultation is taking place with all stakeholders for further refinement, an ideal situation would be to work around inflation linked increase. The current economic climate and financial constraints would definitely impact negatively servicing debts that are not affordable. Check your monthly statements both the KDM and Ilembe reflect the same property valuation. If it doesn't match correct them

immediately. The DA hopes the final tariff charges by KDM and Ilembe would be realistic and affordable. Cllr. Madhun Sobram Sing DA Caucus Leader

Defiant Zuma not leaving office “yet” By Nkosinathi Dube

Amid the turmoil within the ruling party and its alliance partners ranging from factions and those calling for the president to step down, Jacob Zuma has made it clear that he won't be leaving office anytime soon. President Jacob Zuma and the ANCs woes have been triggered by the infighting and the ANC presidency succession debate as to who will lead the ruling party as they are approaching their elective conference which will take place in December. Many within the alliance have lost confidence in the president's leadership and have come out publicly to call for him to step down. Another contributing factor is that of the president's cabinet reshuffle and the firing of the Finance Minister, Pravin Godhan causing the weaker rand to destabilize. Zuma yet again came out in defense of his decision as it was in line with the constitution, but that will be somehow his undoing to the allied unions which include the likes of the SACP, COSATU among others who made a clear call for his resignation which has led to

Ntshawini residents strike

STAYING POWER: President Jacob Zuma in a jubilant mood during the WEF on Africa in Durban last week as he assured investors that South Africa's economy is on the Right track.

numerous protests. SACPs Blade Nzimande spoke out about recent incident when for the first time since he became president, Jacob Zuma was not allowed to address the masses at a rally organised by the COSATU. Nzimande said “it's sad period for the alliance, and extremely saddened by what has transpired but as the alliance we should take this as the final wakeup call”. When a confident president Zuma addressed journalists during the WEF summit in Durban last week about the May day incident he acknowledge that people were merely exercising their democratic right. “Unfortunately people

misread this. In a political democracy people engage heads of state, they criticize heads of state for their views because they are expressing themselves freely,” Zuma said. It remains a mystery as to whether the President was deliberately made to walk to an ambush as there were reports that he was going to be disrupted, a claim the leadership of the ANC has rubbished. Albeit that and more the political battles have been drawn as the factions are becoming more visible day by day despite calls by senior leadership that there should be no succession talks and pronunciations of who will lead the party.

AFTERMATH: The scenery after the first Ntshawini strike earlier this year

By Xpress Reporter

Ntshawini residents blocked the R102 on Sunday night, 7 May 2017 and again on Monday morning, 8 May 2017 as they marched for RDP houses. According to one of the residents at Ntshawini who asked not to be named, the living conditions in the area are not good. “At Ntshawini

there are plenty of unemployed people, there was a strike before where the public wanted job opportunities. Now since we don't have jobs to build our own houses, we think it's better to march for the government to give us RDP houses. Building a house is hard for employed people, it is much worse if you are unemployed,” said the

resident. This was the second overnight strike at Ntshawini this year following another earlier in the year where residents took to the streets calling for the municipality to install streetlights in the area. Neither the municipal representatives nor SAPS members were reached for a comment.

His agency "Le Modelle" has worked with major fashion houses, both local and international. In December 2016 he coordinated the Al Ansaar Souk annual banquet which saw attendance by major personalities from all over the country. His models have participated and been highly placed at the Durban July. Ismail insisted on using local models for the Elleah Rose Foundation "Project Run Way" fashion extravaganza. His goal is to contribute to a worthy cause and to nurture local talent.

He intends opening a modelling agency in KwaDukuza so we can look forward to brilliant events in the future. Ismail is also a fitness freak. He is a fitness coach and manages the Zakariyya Muslim School Astro turf league, working closely with the youth and community. He has a full time job managing a leading fashion outlet. He is also a dad to his four beautiful kids who are the inspiration behind all his achievements. The public is encouraged to support this worthy cause. Prepare to be blown away by the talent of Ismail Gori. Tickets can be purchased at White House Centre Stanger Pharmacy, Mane Attraction and Dr J.A.Vythelingam's rooms OR contact Ismail on 072 443 5910. Project Runway Showcase: Eastern wear by Gori Ansur “My passion for great quality Eastern wear began over two decades ago and I would indulge on the best that money could buy on my many trips to India. Soon enough, what started as shopping for myself and my family, became shopping for friends and extended family who simply loved the exquisite Indian

outfits that we would wear. And gradually as word spread, many ladies began approaching me for the same. And so a business was born. New clients became good friends and good friends became family. Sharing the same taste for quality, style and uniqueness, I travelled to India time and again, catering for the clothing needs of entire families for special functions. From bridal wear to smart casual eastern wear, to wedding cards with an Indian touch, Eastern decor, Eastern footwear, famous indian skincare and makeup. My range had grown by the grace of the almighty. Having humble beginnings, I have always strived to give something back to both my local

community and to communities from my home away from home, India. I firmly believe that whilst one should enjoy the fruit of a successful business, it wouldn't be possible without support from the community and it is our duty to give back especially to the less fortunate, like the children cared for by the Elleah Rose Foundation. I would like to take this opportunity to salute home businesses, as running one is not as easy as it looks. I would also like to thank the ladies managing the Elleah Rose Foundation for this wonderful opportunity of showcasing my business and applaud them for the great work that they do on a daily basis.”

Overflow - Youth Day Celebration 31st March saw a gathering of over 380 youth at the End of School Term Party that was hosted by the Stanger Youth Forum. That was just a foretaste of what is to come. Now the Stanger Youth Forum has planned “Overflow”, a bumper Youth Day Celebration on June 16th at the Stanger Manor Grounds. The anxiously awaited event is planned to cater for Youth groups, schools, and family get-togethers of all ages. The event will begin with a fun run at 8am on Friday morning that will start and end on the Manor Grounds. Participants for the fun run will come from at least 10 of our local schools and learners will all receive a medal on completion. Obviously, the fun run will be open to all ages. Overflow will continue with various games of

X

soccer, volleyball, and netball. A short athletic track will also be set up for our favourite father's race, mother's race, and other fun track events for all ages. Thunee, face painting, jumping castle, rides, and much more have been planned for the day. Various shows and rides have been planned for those who prefer not to partake in sporting activity. Quads, reptiles, and competitions will be seen throughout the day. Overflow will be held over a long weekend and many families will be meeting on the grounds for a family get-together. There will be plenty of food stalls and entertainment to keep all ages occupied for the day. Many see the event as a “one day fair” as local businesses, churches, and individuals are purchasing stalls from as little as R500 to market various products. Stalls can be secured by calling the number below. Food stalls will carry

various meals that are popular to ground events at low prices to promote a warmer atmosphere to socialise. Recording artists, Jason D, and Suzette Esthur will take to the main stage and hopefully give away copies of their album to supporting spectators. Many local talented musicians will also keep the music going till 4pm. Much effort is being made to secure big sound this time around as organisers are liaising with reputable sound specialists. We are thankful to the many Educators, Pastors, Leaders, Parents, and businessmen who show an interest in young people with love and unity. Please pray for good weather, for the success of this event, and pray that the Youth of our community will be blessed. For sponsorships, stalls, or any further information please contact Pst. Clement Rajarathnam on 084 062 6200.

Martial Arts champ Letter of appeal for sponsorship from KDMA meets Arnold An open letter from instructor, Humaira Khan Schwarzenegger I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my instructors from the time that I started my karate training to achieving my Taekwondo black belt. These include Sensei Tarzan Naicker, Sensei Johnny Pillay, Kancho Allan Mohamed, Subonim Timur Kurmanov and Sahuy Nimke Vladimir Grachev. Their consistent motivation and confidence in me has led me to where I am today. As I excelled in my own training, I wanted to pass my skills to more girls and ladies, this is how KwaDukuza Martial Arts started. In 2015, I opened my on Dojo in

a small space at the back of Whitehouse parking lot. As the year went along, KDMA started to grow. Due to the space restrictions, we had to move to a bigger space by the end of 2015 which is currently at Whitehouse Centre shop 16B. Through all the hard work and dedication from my students, we are now a wellestablished club which allows us to take part in outdoor activities and also in national and international competitions. I am very proud to announce that my students and I will be competing in the European GTF Taekwon-Do Championships to

be held in the Republic of Northern Cyprus. We are therefore requesting and appealing to the town of KwaDukuza to help us with sponsorship. We are going to represent South Africa at the competition. The team competing will be include me the instructor, Desiree Moodley, Merlene Pillay and Vanessa Moodley. For further information, please contact me, Humaira Khan on 078 170 5093 Thanking you Humaira Khan

The 4 martial artists that will be competing in Cyprus

KDMA Instructor, Humaira Khan participated in the Arnold Classic Tournament this past weekend and was fortunate to get a picture with Hollywood actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger himself. The tournament was hosted by Schwarzenegger at the Sandton Convention Centre in Gauteng. Humaira Khan scooped three medals and achieved gold for continuous

sparing (fighting), silver in kata (forms) and bronze for point sparing (kumitay). Khan, along with three of her students will be competing at an international event to be held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Khan appeals to the community to kindly assist with sponsorships. If you would like to assist, please contact Humaira Khan on 078 170 5093.

Maxwell junior football challenge

Manor end season on a high

Manor Cricket Club ended its season on a high with a convincing victory over high fliers United Cricket Club. United the more fancied team with several iLembe Challenge league players including captain and former Manor player Aviero Nadasen and all-rounder Ismail Mohammed. United won the toss and elected to bat. United concluded their innings on 107 for 7 after 20. The top scorers were Ismail Mohammed 27 runs, Z. Ali 24 runs and former Manor skipper A. Nadesan 10 runs. The pick of the Manor bowlers was Alex Pillay claiming 3 wickets for 22 runs of his allotted 4 overs. In reply, Manor amassed a total 108 for 3 after 16 overs as they cruised through the run chase, with skipper Comfort Shange top scoring with 51 not out and the young talented Saieshan Lognathen 36 not out.

United looked to be earlier title contenders after d e f e a t i n g Morningside earlier in the season. However with this defeat, next years title race looks to be relatively open. M a n o r s e c r e t a r y , P. Ramchuran has been working hard behind the scenes to create lots of incentives and motivational systems to ensure a stronger showing next season with the signing of several talented youngsters and the appointment of a new coach for the team. Well known football enthusiast and organiser, Maxwell Gwegwe is in the process of organising a football tournament for the U15 and U17 divisions on the weekend of 3-4 June 2017 at the Rocky Sport ground. Maxwell said that the aim of the tournament is aimed at the youth of the community and it stands to reason that they cannot afford to contribute towards such an event in terms of finances. He requests for sponsorships that will go a long way towards boosting the morale and selfconfidence and will contribute towards their social upliftment. He added that that the participants in the Challenge are the future leaders and any action that's taken will go a considerable way towards shaping their minds for the future. The Xpress Times Easter volleyball tournament, hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association has finally drawn to closure after experiencing numerous setbacks due to inclement conditions and logistical problems (teams participating in provincial events and no lights on at courts). The final was completed last night with Randsons, reigning champions taking on the formidable Grove End I, the 2017 Top 8 champions. This was the repeat of the 2016 finals when Randsons surprised Grove End to take the cup when Grove end seemed indestructible. Unfortunately, the results of the final was not available when going to print but watch the space in the next edition for all the egg-watering details. Speaking to mentor and coach

of Randsons, Aslam Randeree, Randeree said that his team are once again hungry and will and still hopeful of once again upsetting the formidable Grove End. He added that his players were looking forward to once again locking horns with their arch rivals. The tournament was contested in 2 pools which consisted of 6 teams each Randsons topped Pool A undefeated whilst Darnall United settled for the runner up spot losing only to Randsons. In Pool B, the 2 Grove End sides dominated with their first team winning and the second side claiming 2nd. Grove End B surprised most by pipping out the formidable KSST outfit. In the semi-final played last Thursday, Randsons easily passed Grove End B cruising to a comfortable 25-16 victory but had to sweat in second set to beat them 26-24 to book a place in the finals. In the second semifinal, Grove End A were made to sweat against Darnall but held on to a hard fought FROM 25-19, 25-21 victory to •FISHING •SPORTS •FISHING •SPORTS •GUNS •GUNS • •CYCLES CYCLES secure a berth in the •INDOOR •INDOOR SHOOTING RANGE final.
