‘She Conquers’ campaign gains momentum T

The campaign is aimed at improving the lives of adolescent girls, also mobilizing all sections of society to address several critical challenges facing young people. The campaign was graced by a number of learners, mainly girls, from different schools within KwaDukuza. Learners were granted an opportunity to raise their concerns or challenges they

Hospital dismisses social media allegations By Thokozani Mnguni

The newly named General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Hospital came under fire last week following appalling reports on social media by the KwaDukuza community. A photo of a man lying on the floor, next to a wheelchair - unattended to - made the rounds on social media. Residents claimed that patients are usually left unattended to at the hospital. A patient at the hospital who spoke to the Xpress Times alleged that the picture is just the tip of the iceberg. “Bad behaviour by hospital staff is not in line with the code of conduct by the department of health. We raised our concerns to the ward management but no action was taken. The only thing we got as patients was a meaningless apology from the management after the story had made

it to social media. We plead with the Department of Health to listen to our cries and nurses must be held accountable for their actions,” said the patient. Spokesperson for the KZN Department of Health, Ms Ncumisa Mafunda, said there was miscommunication between the patient and the nurse. “An investigation by hospital management has revealed that there was some degree of miscommunication between the patient concerned and a nurse. The patient was addressed by Senior Nursing staff and the matter was clarified. The GJG Mpanza Regional Hospital has a compliments and complaints mechanism that is followed when the patient has a complaint about the services or the

experience of care in any of the service areas of the facility. Patients are encouraged to report the complaint to the Manager of the section concerned, or they can visit the office of the Public Relations Officer situated at the main entrance of the Hospital,” said Ms Ncumisa Mafunda. She further dismissed allegations regarding the picture that was making the rounds on social media of a male lying on the hospital floor. “An investigation was conducted and the facility strongly rejects those allegations as untrue. The investigation revealed that the patient was refusing to follow an instruction, but the situation was corrected by the staff immediately,” concluded the spokesperson.

On Monday morning, a bus travelling from Mandeni towards Stanger collided with a sugarcane truck at the R102 and R74 intersection. 27 scholars were injured as well as the bus driver and the conductor. According to IPSS, one of the scholars seated at the front of the bus was entrapped and sustained critical injuries. “Whilst under the care of both IPSS and Lenmed advanced life support paramedics, KwaDukuza Fire and Rescue service extricated her from the wreckage. Due to her injuries and prolonged entrapment, Lenmed specialised air ambulance was activated to transport her through to Lenmed EThekwini Hospital and Heart Center. An additional 26 scholars sustained injuries ranging from moderate to minor.”

The Ladies Volleyball 'Who's Who' tournament, hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association and sponsored by Nandos Stanger, held last Friday at

the association courts proved to be a phenomenal success when it attracted more than 30 enthusiastic players. Young and old, players and non players strutted their

stuff around the courts, learning from one another. K D VA , t o g e t h e r w i t h Nandos Stanger must be commended for their vision of promoting 'Women in

Sport'. This bodes well for the future of women's volleyball in KwaDukuza. 5 teams competed on a round robin basis giving every player an opportunity to play to the maximum. Thereafter, the players were awarded medals and meals at Nandos Stanger. Kruba Jaram (Vice President of KDVA), Shireen

Basdeo (Women in Sport) and Sashnee Moonsamy (Secretary of KDVA) were full of praise for the management and staff of Nandos Stanger for having the vision of promoting volleyball amongst ladies, young and old and the concept and vision of KDVA's 'Women in Sport'. Jaram reiterated the

importance of such sponsorships in the quest to promote healthy lifestyle, more especially the youth, away from the ills of society. KDVA's vision is to promote volleyball amongst the fairer sex by hosting regular tournaments and if numbers permit, commence with a league for ladies.

He announced the renewal of this relationship after handing over a cheque of R2500 to Revy Harryprasad, executive member of KDVA, this past

Saturday. Pranpath, over numerous years has sponsored volleyball, more especially amongst the ladies, being the main sponsor for the annual KDVA Women's Day tournament. Pranpath, on his handing over the sponsorship, said that he was ecstatic to reunite with KDVA

and promote the game. Harryprasad went on to praise Pranpath on his return to the fold of KDVA and thanked him for his vision in promoting the sport. The executive of KDVA are still to decide what tournament to use the sponsorship for. Watch this space for details
