KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) has officially launched the post-school workplace readiness programme in an effort to inculcate and expose the world of work to unemployed graduates and schoolleaving youth. The Municipality, through various initiatives, has engaged with the youth who on a number of occasions have pointed out that they need exposure to the work environment. The need for exposure was so that they have an understanding of the various expectations employers have of them as well as acquire knowledge on how to complete application

forms, compile CV's, prepare for interviews and learn how to access the KDM jobs database. KDM's population is comprised by a majority of youth, many of who are in the secondary level of education. During the certificate conferral for the first group of youth that have successfully completed the KDM Workplace Readiness Programme on Friday (07-07-2017), Chairperson of the Youth, Sports and Gender Portfolio Committee Cllr. John Phahla motivated the youth to strive to do better and also tasked them with shaping their own future. “Congratulations to all of you

here today, you are very fortunate to have come this far because some of us have never succeeded to be this far, so we really appreciate your commitment and your hard work. Most of the young people are stuck in social ills that will totally ruin their future and lessen their life span. We hope in the new future, all of you will find work or even start your businesses using the skills and knowledge you have received since Monday (03-07-2017), we want to see you doing wonders for yourselves. We urge parents to encourage their children to work hard in their studies”, said Phahla.

A reputable KwaDukuza craftsman is reeling in disappointment as he alleges he has not been paid R160 000 for luxury furniture he made for King Goodwill Zwelithini three years ago. According to Mr Kuber Eadhev Singh, he created two armchairs for the Zulu monarch and seven for each of his wives. He also produced a podium to be used personally by the King, as well as ten side tables. Singh alleges that during March 2014, the King's aide, Mr Sithole, visited Tambuti Furniture Manufacturers and placed the order for the items. He allegedly brought in an armchair belonging to the King himself and said that it should be used as a sample. It is alleged that all the furniture requested by the King was to be manufactured in solid 'tambuti' wood. Singh said that Sithole used to call at the Tambuti Wood Factory regularly. “After he took the last delivery, I never heard of him. I called his office on numerous occasions and was told that he is sick or in a meeting. Even my emails have been ignored,” he said. A summons was issued to the

King in May this year; however, Singh alleges that there still hasn't been any response. According to Mr Sithole, it was not the King who was supposed to pay for the furniture, but the royal household department. “We have received legal documentation from Mr Singh's lawyer, so I cannot comment further,” said Sithole. Singh expressed his disappointment with the issue and said that he was honoured to make the King's furniture. “I am 76 years old and I made it with pride with my family.” Mr Singh has made furniture for a number of dignitaries around the world including Queen Elizabeth, Princess Diana and George W Bush.

The lifeless body of a newborn baby was recovered from a pit toilet in Shaka's Head on Thursday, 6 July 2017. According to Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane of the SAPS KZN Media Centre, Umhlali police received a complaint about a dead body at Shaka's Head at 8am. “On arrival at the scene, the members found the body of a newborn baby inside the pit toilet. A 20-year-old woman who was apprehended by members of the community was arrested for concealment of birth and will appear in court soon,” said Zwane.

Facelift for Bird Park Bridge By Xpress Reporter

Firearms seized in Maphumulo

A 65-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in the Maphumulo area last week. According to Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane of the SAPS KZN Media Centre, four unlicensed firearms were recovered during a joint operation by various units under Ilembe Cluster. “They were raiding illegal firearms in the area after they received positive information about firearms at a certain homestead. The members identified the said homestead and it was raided,” said Zwane. He added that two homemade shotguns, a 9mm pistol and a shotgun were recovered with various live rounds of ammunition. “An elderly man (65) was arrested after failing to give satisfactory explanation about the firearms. He was charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.” The arrested suspect appeared in the Maphumulo Magistrates' Court on Monday. The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the members. “These firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any taxi related cases or faction fights in the area. Our police officers will continue with their good work in recovering illegal firearms and making sure that those in possession of these firearms are caught,” he said.

Lightning may strike twice at Mandeni Driving License Testing Centre as there have been allegations of fraud and corruption at the centre. According to the Xpress Times' sources, a KwaDukuza resident allegedly went to the centre and bought his learner's license for R2000. When contacted for a comment, the secretary to the chief of the licensing centre said, “While I'm not authorised to reply to the media statements but the Acting Municipal Manager, Mr Khuzwayo, however I need to point out that I'm not aware of such allegations. I shall bring this to his attention and request him to commission an urgent investigation” said the secretary. Mandeni DLTC is no stranger to allegations of fraud as in 2011, ten officials were arrested following an investigation into all 42 driving licence testing centres across the province. An investigation into the centre could cause dents in the municipality's hopes for building a R2.5 million driving testing grounds which the Mayor Siphesihle Zulu announced in his 2017/18 financial year budget speech last month.

According to an officer they proceeded to a house in the Zinkwazi area where two men were spotted via CCTV cameras on the premises of a client at 00:15am. As he approached them, one of the intruders spotted him and attacked him with an unknown instrument. He fired two shots, grazing the attacker. The injured intruder cooperated with him and led him to a house at Mandeni where he had left a television which he stole from another house the previous night. The television set was recovered and he pointed out his partner in crime. Calvin Masinga (35) of Charlottdale and Lucas Mthembu (32) of Mandeni will seek bail in court this week.

High riding Darnall continue unbeaten streak Premier league outfit Grove End 2 were made to sweat in their encounter against the Division I rookies and youthful Preston Sporting in their opening fixture. Nothing separated both the teams in the first set as Preston pushed their more illustrious opponents all the way with Grove End managing a narrow 29-27 win.
