The ANC chairperson in the General Gizenga Mpanza region, Dr Ricardo Njabulo Mthembu, who was recently honoured with an Honorary Doctor of Theology by the Independent Theological Institute, congratulated the ANCYL on its 74th anniversary. Mthembu congratulates ANCYL liberation of South Africa from the Apartheid regime. Mthembu stated that the founding of the ANCYL at the Bantu Social Centre in Johannesburg in 1944 heralded an era of growth and renewal for the ANC as a result of the new wave of energy infused by the ANCYL in the mother body. “I would like to take this opportunity as a member and leader of the ANC to

congratulate the ANCYL on its 74th anniversary. The 1949 Programme of Action of the ANCYL, adopted by the ANC's national conference, not only became the turning point in the radicalization of the liberation struggle, but also positioned the ANCYL as a kingmaker within the ANC. “ T h e

founding leaders of the ANCYL played a critical role in taking the liberation struggle to new heights, through mass mobilisation, defiance campaigns, boycotts and other campaigns that infused radicalism into the ANC,” expressed Dr Mthembu.

“Seven decades later, the ANCYL remains a champion of advancing the aspirations of South Africa's youth and mobilising young people behind the vision of the ANC. These are the twin tasks that the ANCYL must continue to execute

Celebrations for the 74th anniversary have been going on, as on 08 September 2018, president of the ANC, Cyril Ramaphosa joined masses in Umlazi to celebrate and honour the role of the ANCYL in society and towards radical economic transformation.

Press Release “The African National Congress rejects the Sunday Times' story (Exposed: Zuma plot to oust Cyril) as sensational hot-air. The ANC will not dignify these blatant lies and fabrications with a detailed response. However, we would like to point out that we refute this shameless gossip. We also reject attempts to link our Secretary General, Cde Ace Magashule, to this alleged plot to oust the President of the ANC, Cde Cyril Ramaphosa. It is clear that this malicious gossip is calculated to cast aspersions on the integrity and commitment of our Secretary General to the unity and renewal project of the African National Congress. Cde Ace Magashule, like all other leaders, is focused on the programme of uniting the organisation as mandated by the NASREC conference. Accordingly, Cde Ace and the entire leadership collective reject

any attempts by agents opposed to the ANC to defocus them from the task of unity and renewal. The leadership collective regards the unity of the ANC as sacrosanct and will oppose any attempts to sow divisions within its ranks. The ANC calls on its members and the public at large not to be misled by this factually baseless story. We are disappointed that the Sunday Times, in a very irresponsible and dangerous manner, proceeded to publish this misleading story. We urge the Sunday Times to immediately retract this story which is nothing but incoherent political gossip that has the potential to undermine the unity of the movement. The ANC supports freedom of the press but believes that such freedom should be exercised with care and responsibility.” When approached for comment by Xpress Times, the ANC secretary in the General Gizenga Mpanza Region, Musa Zondi

objected the article citing that it aims to derail the movement of the ANC ahead of the 2019 elections. “It must be put on record that there's no plot to oust the President of the ANC. This is an unfounded allegation directed to some leaders of the ANC in a bid to create instability and disunity within the party. This morning I spoke to the Provincial Secretary of the ANCYL, Thanduxolo Sabelo who also dismissed this allegation. Such allegations from the media are however not new to the ANC. There have been several members of the ANC who have been accused in the past for conspiracy based on unfounded understanding, We reaffirm our trust and confidence in the President who was elected by the delegates of the party at its 54th conference last year and we will be supporting him as the leader of the ANC in all efforts to achieve overwhelming victory in the 2019 elections,” said Zondi.

South Africa slips into recession South Africa is in its first technical recession in nine years. Stats SA announced on Tuesday that the country's real gross domestic product contracted by 0.7% in the second quarter of 2018. This follows a revised fall of 2.6% in the first quarter of the year. Here's 10 things you need to know according to the report: - The country's agriculture sector was the hardest hit, with a decline of 29% in the second quarter of 2018. It contributed 0.8 of a percentage point to GDP growth. Stats SA says the decrease was mainly due to a drop in the production of field crops and horticultural products, and the impact of drought. - Transport and trade were the sectors that were the second hardest hit. service reported that the transport, storage and communication industry contracted by 4.9%, contributing -0.4% of a percentage point the GDP. Meanwhile the trade, catering and accommodation industry decreased by 1.9% and contributed -0.3 of a percentage point. - Positive contributions to GDP came from the mining industry as well as the finance, real estate and business services sectors. - Net exports also contributed positively to growth in expenditure on GDP, with exports of goods and services up 13.7%. This was largely influenced by increased trade in precious metals, mineral products and vegetable products. Imports increased by 3.1%. Expenditure on real gross

domestic product decreased by 0.9% in the second quarter of 2018, following a decrease of 2.6% in the first quarter of 2018. - Household final consumption expenditure decreased by 1.3% in the second quarter of 2018, contributing -0.8 of a percentage point to total growth. This was the first quarter-on-quarter decrease since the first quarter of 2016. - Government final consumption expenditure increased by 0.7%, contributing 0.1 of a percentage point. - Gross fixed capital formation decreased by 0.5%, contributing -0.1 of a percentage point. - The manufacturing industry contracted by 0.3% in the second quarter. The majority of the 10 manufacturing divisions reported negative growth rates in the second quarter. The largest contributors to the decrease were the motor vehicles, parts and accessories and the 29 Chief Albert Luthuli Street, Stanger furniture and 'other' Tel: 032 5522397 •UPGRADES •NEW CONTRACTS •PREPAID DEALS & LAYBYE manufacturing divisions. - The rand immediately fell on news of the recession, compounding its earlier losses. Police Officer murdered By Xpress Reporter

The Acting Provincial Commissioner for KwaZuluNatal, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has condemned the latest killing of a KZN police officer. “We are angered and disturbed by the news that a Sergeant from Mandeni Police Station was killed by her partner whilst she was off duty. The South African Police Services has been robbed of yet another foot soldier in such an unnecessary and tragic manner. We extended our deepest condolences to her family and colleagues who are understandably still shocked. Our Employee Health and Wellness officials will render the necessary support to them during this unfortunate period,” he said. According to KZN SAPS Spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker, it is alleged that on 8

September 2018, at 17:30, the police woman was shot by her partner at Bhidla Section in Sundumbili after a domestic dispute. “She sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the body and died at the scene. She has been identified as Sergeant

Nonhlanhla Lindiwe Mazibuko (40). The 43-year-old suspect later handed himself over to the police and will appear in court soon. A firearm suspected to be used in the commission of crime was also seized by police. Police at Sundumbili are investigating a case of murder,” he said.

LOTARE hosts successful rendezvous The Lower Tugela Association of Retired Educators (LOTARE) hosted the 2018 Retirees' Rendezvous last Wednesday at the Sungum Hall. It was attended by members from 10 retired associations throughout KZN and there were close to 500 people whose ages ranged from over 65 to around 90. The day began with a welcome item performed by the hosts and ended with a farewell dance item by Lotare. In between, there were songs by individual artistes from the different associations as well as group dancing. Undoubtedly, the unusual choreography by Roy Naicker and his troupe of dancers for the opening and closing was the highlight of the day. The Deputy

Mayor, Mrs Dolly Govender, welcomed the guests on behalf of the KwaDukuza Municipality and urged the members not to lose interest in education but instead to assist the Dept. of Education

to uplift the standard because of the wealth of experience that they possessed. According to the Chairman of Lotare, Christy Kistasamy, and the Coordinator of the event, A.

Sewpursad, they were overwhelmed by congratulations and thanks on a well-organised event of a very high standard.

The baton for the organisation of the next rendezvous was handed to CHARTA of Chatsworth.

The retirees await the next meeting to rekindle old friendships.

KZN FCS units shine during Women's Month

Gledhow Primary hosts Arbor Week event

By Xpress Reporter

Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units in KwaZulu-Natal concluded Women's Month in excellent form by securing a number of convictions for crimes against women and children during the month of August 2018. According to KZN SAPS Spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, teams of dedicated investigators from the FCS Units around the province were in a position to secure 44 convictions during the same period whilst other cases remain under investigation or are still at court. “Amongst those convicted, 12 accused were sentenced to life

imprisonment for rape cases whilst others were sentenced to a total of 394 years in prison. A total of 402 suspects were also arrested during the same month for various crimes such as rape, sexual assault, assault GBH, attempted murder, common assault, concealment of birth, kidnapping as well as other sexual offences,” said Gwala. She added that these seasoned investigators will continue to persevere in bringing those who abuse women and children to book. “Citizens can be assured that all cases in their hands will be thoroughly investigated to ensure that those implicated end up in prison.”

KDM and THE KDM MALL I write this letter to be informative to the public to make informed choices going forward with the ripple effects of the KDM Mall construction. The Adage “For evil to prevail, all it takes is for a few good men to sit back and do nothing” applies. History will judge us harshly. From the outset, I want to make it clear as mud that I am not against the new mall development or any other development in our town that brings much needed employment and upliftment to society. There are many new developments in the KDM Mall saga which is of interest to the public. At the moment there are more questions than answers. I hope this letter will urge KDM and the KDM Mall developer to bring clarity to my concerns raised. I have reliably learned that every developer must sign a RIGHT TO DEVELOPE agreement with KDM. The said agreement is binding on both parties. A breach or violation of the agreement has serious legal implications for both the developer and KDM. Reading media coverage on the mall and the various issues surrounding it and the lack of road infrastructure upgrade. It seems the developer has breached the agreement. Now this changes everything. KDM has not issued a STOP WORK NOTICE ON THE DEVELOPER. KDM has to answer as to why they have not done so. Town planning has to answer why the road upgrades were not started as soon as the mall building started. Was it the intention of the Developer and KDM not to have the road upgrade done and hoodwink the public? What is Department of Transport role in this saga? Is there collusion taking place? Why are our councillors quiet on these important issues? Are they not there for the benefit of the public? We must hurt these politicians at the polls in 2019. Why is KDM not interested in the state of the CBD, and the very businesses that has sustained the coffers of KDM and IDM. I have a theory. KDM is showing the business houses in the CBD the middle finger in favor of the mall. All the banks that are moving out of the CBD to the KDM Mall has also shown loyal customers the middle finger. They are putting profit before people. Affected customers must deal with these banks harshly in the same manner they are treating you, by moving our accounts to other banks. Rumor has it that the KDM Mall developer is selling the Recreation ground back to KDM. If this is

true, where is the consultation with the ratepayers? What is the sale price? What formula will be used considering the price paid for the entire property? The developer being a generous man, should donate it to KDM. Where are the promised sporting facilities promised during the sale? Can all these questions be answered by KDM? Well fellow residents and ratepayers, I have done my civic duty, you do yours. “DOING RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS, CHANGING ONE LIFE AT ATIME”. Cyril Pandaram

Times are hard…economically

For all and intents and purposes we here in KwaDukuza have felt the vice like pinch of the taxing (pun intended) economy on our collective household incomes and impacting on our minds via stress and anxiety. This year, 2018 thus far has dropped the proverbial pipebomb of the Value Added Tax (VAT) for us to panic and morph into anxiety. Then petrol price increase upon increase roving in a monthly dose fashion like collecting chronic medication. Now the television media is bombarding the citizen, consumer and ratepayer with terms like technical recession and recession. Dare politicians say, “We must tighten our belts,” because the spending power is like the empty notches that a belt buckle needs but is disappearing slowly. Not sure how a change in state president has left South Africans after months now that they have hindsight. Ask the man on street how he is feeling…really! The inner sadness of people over the current economic and political climate has some clutching at straws to retain a semblance of sanity. “Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.” (CS Lewis) Cllr Vernon Pillay Ward 19

BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE

England has clinched the test series against the number one ranked nation, India, 3-1 after winning the 4th test in Durham. Although India lost by 60 runs, they were in no way outplayed. Ironically, it was a spinner, Moin Ali, who was the main wicket-taker in India's two innings, a total of 9 in all (5-63 and 4-71). He was wellsupported by the seamers who took vital wickets at crucial times. Despite Pujara's undefeated century (132*) in the first innings and Virat Kholi's 45 and 58, they were unable to stave off defeat. India's history of failing to win series away from home continues although their performance in this series was much better than on their previous tour in 2014. It requires consistency of performance rather than a few flash-in-the-pan innings to win a series. In the 5th and final test being played at the Oval in London, England's former captain, Alastair Cook, is playing his 161st and final test. Thus far he has scored 71 in the first innings and is 45 n.o. in the second. England has secured a first innings lead of 40 in spite of being 87-6 in the first innings. It was the effort of Josh Butler (89) batting with the tail that enabled them to total 332. India had to rely on recalled allrounder, Ravindra Jadeja (86*), and newcomer, Vihari (56) to rescue them and reach a respectable 292. At the end of the third day, England lead by 154 runs with 8 wickets in hand. They are in the driving seat and may end off as 41 winners of the series. It will be a good send off for their all-time record test run-scorer and sixth in the world whose experience and personality have much to offer the national side. He will be sorely missed in the test team as England does not have another permanent opener. In rugby, the Springboks have struck old form! They are back to their losing ways after a second consecutive defeat, this time to the Wallabies in

Brisbane over the weekend. It was another inept display after conceding a try within the first two minutes. The try was caused by the scrum-half, Faf de Klerk who kicked away possession and the Wallabies counter-attacked to score. Thereafter, the Springboks were playing catchup rugby and according to their coach, Rassie Erasmus, played "stupid rugby" at times. and I concur. How can experienced test players take certain decisions are inexplicable? Then, when they had a chance with a few minutes left to either draw or win the match, they fluffed the opportunity by making an incorrect pass that went to the opposition. Now the danger arises this weekend when they meet their dreaded enemy, the All Blacks. What will be the score? The last two encounters between these perennial rivals have ended with the All Blacks scoring more than 50 points. Can Erasmus bring about a change? He believes that his job is on the line. I believe that the test careers of some of these over-rated players should be on the line. If they do not put their bodies on the line, then another half-century of points is guaranteed. So clinical are the All Blacks in their execution that they can turn defence into attack in a matter of a few passes or a tactical kick that result in a try. Erasmus has said that a similar result in Wellington this weekend would probably spell the end of his tenure as Springbok coach although he still has two more years on his contract. Springbok supporters are hoping for a change in fortune that will bode well for the return matches at home. The US Open over the past fortnight saw Novak Djokovich (Serbia) beat Juan Martin Del Petro (Argentina) in the Men's Singles final in three straight sets. He was able to maintain dominance throughout and win his third US Open in a match that lacked the excitement and

drama of the Women's Singles in which former champion, Serena Williams (USA) was surprisingly defeated by 20th seeded Naomi Jayce Singh is a former administrator and Osaka (Japan) in two sports Patron of the KZNCU sets, 6-2 6-4. Osaka became the first Japanese to win a Grand Slam singles title as her idol Williams angrily imploded, calling the chair umpire "a thief". This outburst came in the second set when she became enraged by umpire Carlos Ramos's warning for receiving coaching from her Box. When a second code violation for racquet abuse was handed out to her along with a point penalty, Williams exploded. She accused the Ramos of being a thief and angrily demanded an apology from the official. Williams's tantrums overshadowed an outstanding performance from Osaka who won just her second title and it happened to be a Grand Slam. The question that arises is whether Williams would have behaved in a similar manner had she been ahead at that time and not facing defeat. For a champion as well as a role model to conduct herself in that manner was poor sportsmanship and, maybe, a subtle attempt to upset the composure of an inexperienced opponent. A person with 23 Grand Slam titles under her belt should be able to control herself and overcome any negativity in a match. A champion loses graciously and to her credit she was generous in her praise of Osaka. This time round, however, Williams did not keep to her high standard of conduct and let herself down badly. A fine of $17000 imposed by the US Tennis Association was what she received for all her troubles. The last word. Last week the former Proteas' fast bowler, Alan "White Lightning" Donald,

selected his All-Time Best XI, comprising players from the era in which he played - the late 1980s and 1990s. He selected 5 players from Australia, 4 from the West Indies and 2 from South Africa. There were no players in his team from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and England. In his opinion, nobody from the sub-continent deserved a place despite these countries having players of the calibre of Wasim Akram, described as the greatest swing bowler of all time, and WaqarYounis of Pakistan. From India, no place for Sachin Tendulkar, the highest scorer of test runs (more than 15000) and the highest test centuries (50). From Sri Lanka Muttiah Muralitharan, highest test wicket-taker (800), and Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jaywaredene. Perhaps Donald, who played most of his cricket in the apartheid era, has not yet been transformed and still believes that people of Asian descent are not capable of making a World XI. To his credit he named the great Vivian Richards as the captain. But he had no choice. It is hoped that one day Donald will get rid of his prejudice and not see players as belonging to a particular race but to the human race and select his team on merit and merit alone! Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.

SADTU Nkosi Albert Luthuli dominates provincial volleyball The Nkosi Albert Region of the South African Democratic Teachers Union dominated the SADTU KZN Provincial volleyball games played at Brettonwood High School over this past weekend. The heavy down pour and miserable conditions on Saturday did not deter the determined players who made the pilgrimage to Durban. However, the games were postponed from Saturday and began on Sunday in clear cool conditions. Present were regions from throughout

KwaZulu Natal who arrived by buses on Saturday. The games catered for volleyball, soccer, netball, basketball, chess, table tennis pool and darts. The program also contained a symposium and a Miss and Mister SADTU KZN which was held on Saturday. The games ran over a two week period starting with the cluster games to the Regional games were teams were selected to represent Nkosi Albert Luthuli Regional. The male volleyball squad was dominated with players from the Phoenix Branch. It was skipped by Angelo under the watchful eyes of coach Anil Singh whilst the female squad was represented by 7 players from KwaDukuza Branch captained by Sashnee Moonsamy and coached by Pooby Moodley. Both squads reached the finals. However, the ladies squad went down 2-1 in the final. The male team however made up for that and came from a set down to win the final 2-1 and were crowned the KZN champs. Well done to the Nkosi Albert Luthuli region.
