Matrics celebrate 2016 results By Xpress Reporter
The 'Top Five' Grade 12 learners in the iLembe District Municipality have done themselves, their parents and their schools proud with the achievement of outstanding results. Although Ilembe District emerged as the lowest performing district in the province with a pass rate of 52.42 per cent, the cream of the crop obtained a number of distinctions. iLembe District's top matriculant, Jenashlen Govender came from Stanger Manor Secondary. He obtained seven distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Science, I.T, Afrikaans, English and Life Orientation. He said that being the number one achiever has always been his aim. “I worked with my abilities and made sure I did all that I could,” said Govender. He added that having a goal, studying with a purpose and using time wisely is essential for academic success. “I do not have a cellphone and I don't watch TV. I made efficient use of my time. I advise learners to study well before the exam and avoid cramming.” The ecstatic student will go on to study Computer Engineering at the University of Pretoria. Jivashen Reddy, also of Stanger Manor Secondary, was placed second with an outstanding eight distinctions in English, Afrikaans,
Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Science, Accounting, Business Studies and Life Orientation. Reddy is set to study Business Science Actuarial Science at the University of Cape Town. Work consistently,” he said. Ilembe's matriculant in third place is Joshua Pillay of Mandini Academy. Pillay also achieved an exceptional eight distinctions and will be studying Astrophysics at University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). The Isithebe resident attributes her success to her passion to eradicate poverty in her family. “I want to succeed against all odds and make something of myself,” said the ambitious student. Tauhirah Naby from Stanger Secondary rounded off Ilembe's Top 5 with seven distinctions
coming from English, Afrikaans, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Physical Science, Information

SAPS festive season rundown

By Xpress Reporter
Zodwa Mncwabe from Stanger Manor, grandmother of the deceased Mxolisi 'Nki' Dlamini (15), is still searching for answers after her grandson left home to purchase airtime. Mxolisi's friends, who were with him at the time of his death, said he was attacked by robbers who dispossessed him of his phone and money. However they later changed their story and said he collapsed while playing with them. “If there is anyone who knows the truth, it has to be his friends. They are the ones who have to tell the truth,” said Zodwa. The grandmother went on to reveal that the R10 believed to have been taken by the robbers was later found on one of the boys. It is alleged that police autopsy established that the boy might have died from internal bleeding since he had broken ribs. “We questioned his friends about what happened, they kept on telling us lies. One of the boys even urged his friends to tell the truth but till today we still don't know the truth.
GONE TOO SOON: Mxolisi 'Nki' Dlamini of Stanger Manor whose death is still a mystery
“We contacted the police about this. They know about this but up to now they have not done anything. The lead detective said he is waiting for schools to reopen as they believe the quarrel may have started from school,” further commented the grandmother. The deceased, a grade 9 student, passed his exams last year and would have been preparing for life as a grade 10 student this January.
Couple's death shock family By Xpress Reporter
Family members and relatives of Mahendran Woodraj, 34, an employee at a car dealership, and Charlene Woodraj, 28, a part-time graphic designer are still shocked following an alleged suicide and murder. It is alleged that the lifeless bodies of the couple were found by relatives in their home in Freesia Road. Charlene had allegedly been shot in the head and Mahendran under the chin.
Those close to the couple have struggled to come to terms with the tragic incident and do not understand what could have led to the unfortunate ending as the pair was described as a loving couple. They are survived by their two children aged 4 and 9. Although it is not clear what transpired between the two, incidents where couple quarrels end in a bloodbath are becoming common in KwaDukuza as last year a 44-year old man from Shakaskraal stabbed his girlfriend to death.

Failing matric - The next step You failed your matric exams. It seems like it's the end of the world for you. You are wrong! You just have a minor setback which you can handle in a business like and professional manner. When you fail an exam, however important it is, and no matter how badly you have failed it, nothing is irreparable. There are resits (supplementary exams), other subjects and career options. Failure is a part of life and you deserve a second chance. If panic has set in during this difficult time, there are lots of people to offer you support and guidance if you need it. But to plan a way forward and to prevent you from failing again, it is important to be honest about the reasons for failing your examinations to enable you to find solutions. This will be painful but it must be done. Failing an examination does not make you a failure. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. Don't let others judge you. Your self esteem and confidence are priceless
• Parents - family support is vital to help children who have failed their matric exams. This can lead to feelings of rejection, low self esteem and suicidal thoughts. Remember your children are more disappointed as their futures depended on their matric results. Give your child love and support. Help them to look at the reasons for failing and to explore options and solutions. Be a pillar of strength and motivate them to overcome this difficult phase in their lives so that they may experience success. Bad New Year Lucky Mkwanazi alleges that he was at his home at Melville at about 10pm on New Years Day. He left his house to speak to a female companion and shortly thereafter was attacked by a group who robbed him of his cellphone, cash and watch. He has no idea why they attacked, assaulted and robbed him. Joseph Mahlangu (49), Nkosinathi Mahlangu (22), Sandile Mahlangu (25) and Masha Mahlangu were all granted bail and are due back at court on 9 February 2017.
Respect children A 13-year old grade 8 girl's behaviour has landed her 22-year-old boyfriend in conflict with the law. According to the father of the child, he went looking for his daughter at her casual workplace on 31 December. She assured him that she would be home as soon as she completed work. After 9pm he panicked when she had not returned home and began phoning her. However, her phone was in the house. He checked the phone and found a name with whom she had been communicating. He reported the matter to the police and with the help of a family member, found the couple at the man's sister's house in Newtown. She admitted to having a sexual relationship with the man who has now been charged with having consensual sex with a minor. He is due back at court on 24

“Three grass cutter machines and harness to the value of R26 000 were stolen. KwaDukuza detectives started their investigation that led to the arrest of the suspects aged 25 and 27 years old. One grass cutting machine is still missing,” said Zwane. KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the KwaDukuza detectives for the good work they did in recovering stolen goods and the arrest. “These suspects will be profiled to check if they are not wanted for other crimes in the province. I also appeal to the community not to buy any suspected stolen goods and they must report to the police those who are selling them,” he said.
Not right Whilst betting may be viewed as evil and unacceptable by sectors of society, stealing from a betting place is not right either. It is alleged that a manager at World Sport Betting in the CBD conducted a spot check and found R17 300 cash missing. After making enquiries, the manager who worked the previous day was also questioned. She too denied any knowledge until the video footage was being viewed. Realizing that the game was up and she had no chance of winning against such odds, Shanice Mandisa Iyer (22) came clean. She was charged with theft and granted bail of R1000. She is due back at court on 17 February 2017.
Bittersweet An aspirant entrepreneur who tried to make some extra cash on the side to supplement his income is in a spot of bother. It is alleged by Ndunga Farm owner, Njabulo Mngadi that he received a complaint from an employee that he had apprehended a person with a 50kg bag of litchis stolen from the farm. Police were called in and Vukani Ndlovu (32) was detained on New Year's Eve. He appeared in court and was remanded until 10 February 2017. The sweet fruit was confiscated by the owner, leaving a somewhat bitter taste in Ndlovu's mouth.
Uniform drive to assist learners Limited job opportunities and retrenchments have resulted in high unemployment rates. As a result, many parents cannot meet the educational needs of their children. The cancellation of grants and the lack of supportive resources also contribute to parent's inability to provide their children with their most basic need - education. Child support grants cater for children up to the age of 18 years. According to the new Children's Act, children can attend school up to the age of 21 years. Many widows and single

One man show for Mandeni comedian By Xpress Reporter
Mandeni born and bred comedian Syanda Maphumulo will at the beginning of next month take to the stage for his first ever one man show. The event is set to take place at the Durban Christian Centre on 3 February 2017. Speaking to the Xpress Times in an exclusive interview, Maphumulo said, “People should expect to know the other side of me, they should also expect to know me better as a comedian” said Maphumulo. Speaking of his recently found fame, the 'Iyenzeka lonto' theme
maker said it would not have been possible without the support from Monwabisi Grootboom, Mxolisi Mtshali and all his fans who like, share and talk about his work on all social media platforms. The hardworking comedian has already had a comedy special airing on DSTV's Mzansi Magic and now has his eyes set firmly on his next big thing. In conclusion, Syanda said that this one man show is a first of many as he already has unconfirmed dates and venues for other shows in the pipeline. The outspoken comedian also shared his ambition to take his comedy back home to Mandeni.
FUNNYMAN: Syanda Maphumulo from Mandeni who is making waves in the South African comedy fraternity.

KDM spends R1.9 million on Beach Party/Music Festival At the last council meeting for 2016, the ANC led council steamrolled R1.9 million on the KwaDukuza Music Festival. Although only R490 000 was budgeted for in the 2016/2017 financial year additional R1.4 million was topped up through virement (transfer) of funds from unrelated departments despite serious concerns by the DA. The DA was concerned since there was no business plan or itemised cost for the expenditure for the event. The DA warned blanket mandate could be disastrous with no checks and balances. Whether goods and services were procured through supply chain management and not handed out to a preferred few. Although council has virement policy to move funds within the same department especially the additional R1.4 million, however R1m was transferred from Ward Committee Members
allocation and the balance came from advertising, Sukuma Sakhe and Legal. Last year council spent almost R1.5 million on beach festival which was not budgeted for. There was outrage from residents with the lavish expenditure taking into account the slowdown in our economy and high unemployment. The DA believes the expenditure is excessive and could be better used on service delivery. Disregard for ratepayers money will come back to bite in the government elections. This flies in the face of containment measures to cut frills and belt tightening exercise which the DA regard as frivolous and wasteful expenditure whereas we should be prudent in spending public funds. The National Treasury through its circular calls for eradication of host of frivolous expenditure including the music festival that are not enhancing service delivery. The DA
Councillor’s Corner
believes since 2008 council has been hosting this annual event and it is time to review the scale of expenditure. Instead of cutting down the recent budget approval indicate almost R400 000 more funds than the previous year was utilised. The DA after having raised the concerns on the excessive expenditure recorded its unhappiness while supported an event on a much smaller scale taking into account the current situation and realities in our country and our region.

Stanger SHOP 38, HULETT STREET,
Education message 2016 has proven once again to be a successful achievement for the matriculants. The results are a clear indication of hard work and dedication by both the educators and learners. Having mentioned this, I would like to congratulate all those matriculants who have brought honour to the ILembe District and I would like to extend my best wishes to those that ensured a pass. Education is an ongoing process that never ends and I encourage matriculants to further their studies. On this, word of advice, always study what you can handle and what the job market demands. It has been proven over the past years that many learners
enter educational institutions only to realise that the field of study chosen is too difficult and strenuous hence dropping out from that course. To those who did not meet the promotion requirements do not despair because you can apply for a rewrite or remark on the subject that the requirement was not met. Furthermore, there are various educational institutions that provide support and offer opportunities to ensure a pass at matric level. It is no secret that there are many challenges and obstacles in this “so called” journey through life and we all desire for a better one. It is never too late for you to accomplish

Kagiso Rabada
Josh Hazlewood of Australia and Kagiso Rabada of South Africa have attained careerbest rankings in the latest ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers. This comes after excellent efforts that helped their sides to convincing victories in the Sydney and Cape Town Tests. Hazlewood has moved up two slots to third place with a match haul of seven for 94 in the Sydney Test, which Australia won by 220 runs on Saturday to complete a 3-0 whitewash over Pakistan. Hazlewood, who turned out for Australia in the ICC U19 World Cups 2008 and 2010, has gained 29 points to reach 860 points and is not far behind the India spin pair of Ravichandran Ashwin (887 points) and Ravindra Jadeja (879 points). Rabada has gained nine slots to reach eighth position after his player of the match performance of 10-92 in the second Test in Cape Town that helped South Africa defeat Sri Lanka by 282 runs on Friday to take a winning 2-0 lead.
Rabada, who took 14 wickets in South Africa's successful campaign in the ICC U19 World Cup 2014 in the UAE, has gained 144 points to reach 796 points, within seven points of England pace bowler Stuart Broad. There was good news for other pace bowlers too as Pakistan's Wahab Riaz and the Sri Lanka pair of Suranga In the ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen, South Africa's Quinton de Kock has continued to rise after scoring 101 and 29 in Cape Town. The wicket-keeper batsman has not only moved up one slot to a career-best eighth position but is now also the leading batsman from his country, ahead of AB de Villiers (ninth rank) and Hashim Amla (10th rank). Pakistan batsman Younus Khan's scores of 175 not out and 13 have enabled him to gain seven slots and reach seventh rank in the Steve Smith-led list, even as Australia's Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb and South Africa's Dean Elgar have attained career-best rankings.

SKKSA hosts successful awards banquet SKKSA hosted its 16h Annual Awards Banquet at the elite Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel, Marine Parade in Durban. The spirit of camaraderie and excitement filled the air as dojos from across KZN came together and were honoured for their unrivalled dedication and continuous achievement for 2016. The well-polished karateka from the Stanger Dojo remained consistent throughout the awards program scooping an amazing 70 awards at the event while their superior achievements were lauded by all in attendance. “My students have performed exceptionally well and they surely deserve to be honoured,” said Sensei Sherwin. At the end of the night this emphatic Dojo stood tall with a massive haul of awards highlighting that true perseverance and commitment surely does have its rewards. Sensei Sherwin would like to congratulate all his karateka who successfully completed their grading examination and to all the
awardees who were honoured at the Annual Awards Banquet, a job well done. “Most importantly, sincere gratitude must be extended to all the parents of the Stanger Dojo for their active participation in karate and for having the focus of involving themselves in the art of karate which ultimately will mould their children into well-groomed individuals. I encourage parents to engage their children in a productive and beneficial way. With regular practice, karate provides huge benefits,” said Sensei. “The value that our children receive in their training is truly unique, kids have been chiselled and prepared not only for karate itself but to enhance their character as a person which allows them to make good decisions,” said PRO of the club, Richard Ponnadu The Stanger Dojo would like to wish everyone a blessed new year ahead. For more info on karate in 2017 contact Sensei Sherwin on 073 178 5775 or email skksastg@yahoo.com

Ronaldo: World's Soccer Player of the Year
Cristiano Ronaldo, a European champion for both club and country in 2016, is World Soccer's World Player of theYear. A winner in 2008, 2013 and 2014, he has now matched the achievement of Lionel Messi by claiming the award for a record fourth time. The World Player award is recognition of the most successful year of Ronaldo's career. After scoring the winning penalty when Real Madrid beat city rivals Atletico in a shoot-out to win the Champions League with Real Madrid, he then captained Portugal to their first international success, at Euro 2016. Despite Ronaldo's achievements in 2016, he was not a runaway winner of the award.
