SA records 15 046 new infections and 416 new deaths
5G towers burnt over conspiracy theories in KZN The KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala has condemned the torching of the recently-installed 5G masts in Umlazi, KwaMashu and Ntuzuma between 5 and 6 January 2021. According to the office of the Premiere, the arson attacks resulted in multi-million rand damage to telecommunication infrastructure and massive disruption of communication services. Speaking on Thursday, 07 January 2021 Sihle Zikalala said the provincial government condemns in the strongest terms, threats and attacks on telecommunication infrastructure in any part of KwaZulu Natal, “We will not tolerate arson attacks and vandalism against infrastructure regardless of whether it belongs to government or the private sector. We cannot allow lawlessness to be used to resolve differences regardless of whether the community grievances are genuine or not. We furthermore call on the SAPS to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book as soon as possible. Based on that report we will engage all relevant parties to ensure that development by the private and public sector is delivered through honest consultation so that it benefits and brings communities together, and does not become a source of violence and division,” said Zikalala.
opportunity to reiterate government's position on the conspiracy theories currently circulating on Social Media platforms which claim there may be a link between 5Gcapacity network and the spread of Covid19,” added Zikalala The arson attack on 5G towers comes after a surge of 5G conspiracy theories that have been shared multiple times on various social media platforms. Last week ANC councillor in Ethekwini
Municipality was under fire after, shared conspiracy theories about the vaccine and linking 5G to Covid-19. The voice note, which surfaced on 4 January, circulated on social media. In the voice note, Mngadi said “As leaders of eThekwini we need to take action against this disease. It is not Covid. We are getting this thing from 5G towers, [some] installed during this period in preparation of the second wave,”
“As we enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution, government, the private sector and the entire community should jealously guard telecoms infrastructure. South Africa remains on alert level 3
President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the extension of South Africa's adjusted level 3 lockdown, with some changes to the current restrictions. In a media briefing on Monday evening (11 January), the president said that the pandemic in South Africa is now at its most 'devastating', with the number of new cases, deaths and hospital admissions now at the highest point since the coronavirus was first detected in the country in March 2020. According to the President, since New Year's Day, we have recorded nearly 190,000 new coronavirus infections, “The country has recorded more than 4,600 COVID-19 deaths so far this year. The number of new infections, hospital admissions and deaths is higher now than it has ever been since the first case was recorded in our country in March 2020. Since the start of the pandemic, South Africa has recorded a cumulative number of more than 1.2 million COVID-19 cases. We have recorded more than 33,000 deaths and more than 148,000 people have been admitted to hospital,” said Ramaphosa
PRESIDENT: President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday raised concern about the misinformation and conspiracy theories circulating about COVID-19 vaccines.
President Ramaphosa added that as a proportion of the population, the province with the highest average number of cases over the last seven days is KwaZulu-Natal, followed by Western Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. New infections in KwaZuluNatal and the Western Cape have grown fast and have now far exceeded the peak during the first wave, “There are currently over 15,000 people with COVID-19 in hospitals nationally, placing a
considerable strain on health facilities, personnel and equipment. Around a third of all COVID-19 patients in hospitals are on oxygen,” added the President Ramaphosa further stated that the government has several strategies to combat Covid-19, the first part of strategy is to acquire enough vaccine doses to reach herd immunity. We are in the process of procuring vaccines through three channels: through the World Health Organization's COVAX
facility, through the African Union's vaccine initiative and through direct engagements with vaccine manufacturers. We will receive vaccine doses for around 10 per cent of our population through COVAX. The South African government has also been engaging directly with several vaccine manufacturers for over six months. While there are several promising negotiations with a number of different manufacturers that still need to be concluded, we have to date secured 20 million doses to be delivered mainly in the first half of the year. We will make further announcements as we conclude our negotiations with vaccine manufacturers,” added President Ramaphosa In conclusion of his address on Monday, President Ramaphosa touched on the issue of gender-based violence, calling it 'country's second pandemic'. The President said government has been collaborating with several civil society formations to sensitise taxi drivers and taxi marshals on gender awareness, gender norms, toxic masculinity and GBVF in an effort to change behaviour.

A courageous and injury-wrecked India pulled off a remarkable draw in a tense third Test against Australia on Monday as they survived against the hosts' much daunted bowling attack to take the series into a decider. They resumed day five at 98-2, needing a further 309 runs after being set a huge 407 to win when Australia declared their second innings at tea on Sunday on 312 for six. No team had ever bettered 288 to clinch victory in the fourth innings at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with Australia achieving that mark against South Africa in 2006. But India gave it a massive go, surpassing 288 in the final session to fray the nerves of the Australian team throwing everything they had at them. The visitors abandoned any hope of victory but they bravely clung on for the draw with Hanuma Vihari, nursing a hamstring injury, surviving 161 balls for just 23 runs and Ravichandran Ashwin, who had treatment on his ribs, making 39.
The 256 balls they faced in their unbeaten partnership of 62 was the most by an India sixth-wicket pair on Australian soil, helping steer them to 334 for five at the close, 73 runs adrift. Their resistance was built on the back of an explosive 97 from Rishabh Pant and a typically gritty 77 from Cheteshwar Pujara, who passed 6000 Test runs, but also helped by wicketkeeper Tim Paine dropping three catches. “Our talk this morning was to show character and fight till the end, not to think about results,” said India skipper Ajinkya Rahane. “I'm really happy with the way we fought, especially day but throughout the game. There are few areas we can improve, but special mention to Vihari and Ashwin. The way they batted in the end and showed character was really good to see.” An absorbing Test was marked

by some high quality batting, led by man-of-thematch Steve Smith's innings of 131 and 81, and Pant's 97. But it will also be remembered for allegations India were racially abused by sections of the Sydney Cricket Ground crowd, with investigations under way and tough action promised against the culprits. After Australia won the first Test in Adelaide by eight wickets and India bounced back in Melbourne by the same margin, the series now heads to Brisbane on Friday this week for the final chapter. It will be a depleted India again at the Gabba, with fast bowlers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav and batsman KL Rahul out injured. There are now doubts over the participation of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who dislocated his thumb in Sydney, and Vihari who could barely run during his rearguard knock.
