ANNIVERSARY

The Xpress Times celebrates milestone

T

he Xpress Times began from humble beginnings in January 2009 from its offices in Lindley Street and is the only locally owned newspaper in KwaDukuza at present with its entire staff residing within the KwaDukuza Municipality while serving the entire iLembe District with distinction and dedication. The very first ever edition of the Xpress Times was available to the public as a fledging paper on Wednesday, 7 January 2009. This newspaper consists of a dedicated team who share over fifty years of

experience combined. Ten years later the Xpress Times invites you to join us as we aim to be more informative; educational; entertaining as well as uplifting and being more xceptionally inspirational. In spite of numerous negative comments the Xpress Times has grown from strength to strength, thanks to our loyal advertisers who believed and kept faith in the team. From the team at the office to the dedicated team that delivers the paper to the community, the management and staff xpress our appreciation and gratitude to our advertisers and the community of KwaDukuza for the success of the Xpress Times. Thank you to The Rising Sun, our state-ofthe-art printers, who have produced an Xpress Times newspaper with superlative print quality that has been delivered timeously through the years. The mission statement of the paper: “If it matters to you, it matters to us” has always driven management and staff in helping the community and satisfying advertisers in boosting their sales time and again thus improving their overall bottom line. The newspaper has given back to the community on a continuous basis in terms of our year round competitions and giveaways.

Since inception we brought you the competitions on Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Diwali, Christmas, EID and more. The newspaper has carved a niche in community upliftment on the humanitarian side by giving to all sectors of society. Through its partnership with advertisers, non-profit organisations, sponsors and individuals, many organisations have received support, including education institutions, various sporting codes, Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza, KwaDukuza SAPS and entertainers. In celebration of ten years we will be running monthly competitions together with some of our advertisers, with fabulous vouchers to be won. Many thanks goes to Thandeka Ngidi who is now an ANC Councillor - for being the anchor editor and reporter for the Xpress Indaba which debuted on Wednesday, 10 July 2013. This addition to the Xpress Times Newspaper has been most welcomed by the community. In conclusion the Xpress Times would like to thank all its advertisers and readership for having nurtured the paper from its humble beginnings and hope for your continued support… God bless.

Ramaphosa delivers SONA 2019 By Thokozani Mnguni

P

resident Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the highly anticipated State of the Nation Address on Thursday 07 February 2019 in Parliament. Political analysts and Economists

lauded the president for his bravery to shine a light on issues that affect many South Africans especially the working class. In his address, Ramaphosa announced Government's plan to exterminate alcohol abuse by teenagers especially in schools.

Ramaphosa promised the complete shutdown of all taverns, shebeens and liquor outlets near schools as the country deals with extremely high levels of substance abuse. He urged all South Africans to come as one and use this time, “to recall the hardship and the suffering which

generations of our people endured their struggles, their sacrifices and their undying commitment to build a South Africa that belongs to all who live in it. “Emerging from a period of uncertainty and a loss of confidence and trust, we resolved to break with all that divides us, to embrace all that unites us. We held a successful Presidential Jobs Summit that agreed on far-reaching measures that when fully implemented will nearly double the number of jobs being created in our economy each year. Last year, a number of

stakeholders raised their concerns about policy uncertainty and inconsistency. We have addressed these concerns. In response to the dire situation at several of our stateowned enterprise where mismanagement and corruption had severely undermined their effectiveness we have taken decisive measures to improve governance, strengthen leadership and restore stability in strategic entities. We have also had to deal with the effects of state capture on vital public institutions, including our law enforcement agencies, Continued on Page 3

Local Mosque bodies stand firmly Apolitical In the Al-Jama-Ah party press release which appeared in the Xpress Times dated 6 February 2019, stating that "the local mosque has invited the party to an event to introduce the party to the community" has been denied by spokespersons of two local

mosques. According to the spokespersons from both organisations, none of their Board members extended any invitation regarding the above to the Al-jama-Ah party. "We reiterate that we are apolitical and that is where we stand". Councillor AK

President pledges to eradicate taverns Continued from Page 1 whose integrity and ability to fulfil their mandate had been eroded in recent years,” expressed Ramaphosa In his remarks, the president cited that the National Health Insurance Bill will soon be submitted to Parliament. The NHI will enable South Africans to receive free services at the point of care in public and private quality-accredited health facilities. “We also convened the first Presidential Health Summit in October last year, which brought together key stakeholders from a wide range of constituencies in the health sector. At this Health Summit, the participants dissected the crisis in the health system and proposed immediate, short term and medium term solutions to improve the effectiveness of the health system. Over the past five years, we made significant progress with the provision of infrastructure. “More than R1,3 trillion has been invested to build hundreds of schools and two new universities, to build hundreds of thousands of new houses, to electrify more

STANGER

than a million homes, generate new electricity and to expand public transport. These infrastructure investments also helped grow our economy and create many new jobs in construction and other sectors. “Infrastructure development has been flywheel of the engine of our economy and has yielded tremendous benefits for the country. Government has committed to contribute R100 billion into the Infrastructure Fund over a 10-year period and use this to leverage financing from the private sector and development finance institutions,” said Ramaphosa President Ramaphosa further announced that he has engaged with the Independent Electoral Commission and also with the premiers of all provinces, and intend to proclaim the 8th of May 2019 as the date of the election. The opposition party in South Africa, the Democratic Alliance blasted the president claiming that SONA once again glossed over the severity of crime and

violence in South Africa. “Instead of addressing the ANC government's chronic failure to address crime and violence in the country and presenting the nation with a concrete plan to make our streets and homes safer Ramaphosa put the onus on communities to combat crime,” said the statement of the party.

The African National Congress Youth League in the General Gizenga Mpanza Region call for state of emergency to be declared in Mandeni, following the alleged scourge of 5 people being set alight and killed in a space of less than three weeks in ward 3 and 4. This was revealed by the Youth League when they held a media briefing on Monday, 11 February 2019 at their regional office, KwaDukuza. The Young Lions allege that all four police stations in Mandeni have failed dismally to bring justice to

the victims of these killings. Chairperson of the Youth League in the region Mfanafuthi Ngcobo alluded that losing souls of future leaders is a big loss to the country and they have staged a mass demonstration march scheduled for 15 February 2019, starting from Isithebe park to end at Sundumbili Police Station. This march is aimed at addressing issues faced by the distressed residents of Mandeni to Minister of Police Hon. Bheki Cele and hand over the memorandum to him. “We boldly wish to declare a state emergency in Mandeni against the

most inhuman killing of innocent people through being set ablaze. The Young Lions of General Gizenga Mpanza region breaks the silence and shout loud to the law enforcement agencies for decisive intervention on the pressing issue of burning people in Mandeni. The Njabulo Ricardo Charity Foundation (NRCF) donated uniforms to 56 disadvantaged learners at Enkukwini Primary School in the Chris Hani area of KwaDukuza Municipality on Tuesday, 5 February 2019. Enkukwini Primary School is a public primary school with an enrolment of some 1700 learners a majority of whom are social grant receipents and live below the breadline.

Speaking at the occasion, the foundation founder and chairperson of NRCF, Dr. Njabulo Ricardo Mthembu, said “It is always good to do good gestures for the young because it teaches them at an early age that one day they should be kind enough to do good for others as well. “The uniforms which we are handing over today, is the foundation's emphasis that it is committed to education particularly in early childhood

development phases” said Mthembu. “I grew up in this community just like you, and I want you to know that one day you can also be the Mayor of this beautiful municipality, all it takes is for you to keep reminding yourself you can do whatever it is that you dream,” added Mthembu. The school principal, Mr. N.K.D. Khuzwayo, thanked the foundation for its support. “It is overwhelming to receive such help, no words

can describe the joy we feel for our 56 children that have benefited. We are particularly proud that, in the NRCF, we are led by people that share both our perspective for education and our commitment to ensuring the dignity of our children.” The Njabulo Ricardo Charity Foundation strives towards the realization of improved and sustainable living conditions within communities.

ILembe hosts revenue enhancement campaign ILembe District Municipality held a revenue enhancement campaign on Thursday, 7 February 2019 t a r g e t i n g Wa r d 1 3 o f Ndwedwe Local Municipality with the aim of improving rates collection, instilling a culture of paying for services amongst citizens and addressing the challenge of low revenue generation and financial viability of council. Dubbed #ThumaMina Campaign, this initiative is part of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance ongoing Revenue Enhancement Campaign themed “Pay Your Levies - Nothing for Mahhala.” It was launched in July 2018 by the District Municipality in Mandeni.

The campaign seeks to encourage communities to pay their dues for municipal services which are a crucial part of municipal revenue. The official Thuma Mina Campaign was launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa in February 2018 and is described as a way of “reconnecting with the people through activities that improve people's lives and solves the problems they face.” On Thursday, four delegations led by mayors, deputy mayors and speakers and supported by councillors, ward committee members, community development workers and government officials embarked on a door to door campaign in Ward 13 of

Ndwedwe to establish challenges that customers experience in water provision and to encourage them to pay for municipal services. Bypassed meters, illegal water connections, meters running with no taps and non-payment of water bills were just some of the problems the delegations picked up when visiting homes. “My delegation visited about 30 homes today and only two were paying for services. The rest were either

illegally connected, bypassing meters or just not paying for services altogether. These are the things that are crippling the municipality because there is money that should be coming in for these services and it is not, yet we are expected to carry out our mandate as a district municipality,” said the district Municipal manager Geoff Kumalo. Speaker of council Cllr Lucky Makhathini said residents were encouraged to visit the municipal offices to

register for connection or register for indigent support. “We understand that some of our residents cannot afford the services and because our government is a caring government, we have support for the disadvantaged but due processes have to be followed. As things stand, people who are illegally connected as essentially stealing from government and we cannot have that,” he said. The Deputy Mayor of

iLembe District Municipality Cllr Dolly Shandu said the culture of non-payment in the district has to stop in order for government to function. “Many of the homes we visited, one could see clearly that they can afford to pay but they just choose not to. We found our meters bypassed and connected to pipes that do not belong to the district. We urge those who can afford to pay for services to do so,” she said.

Voter registration gains momentum at schools ENTERTAINMENT: KwaDukuza comedian was the MC of the day

STATION: Students grabbed the opportunity to register to vote when KDM and IEC visited Shakaskraal Secondary School last week Thursday

By Xpress Reporter

KwaDukuza Municipality together with IEC rolled out a voter registration programme at Shakaskraal Secondary School on Thursday, 07 February 2019. Learners came in large

numbers, carrying their Identity Documents. According to KwaDukuza Municipality Liaison Officer, Sipho Mkhize, this allows citizens to have a say in politics and it can also ignite change. “Today we are

giving young people a platform to be part of the 2019 General Election to be held in May,” said Mkhize. The Municipality also urged all those who registered to vote to go out and cast their vote in May.

Award winning poet takes her art home

POET: Smangele 'SimChina' Zungu who is set to host her onewoman poetry show at Macambini

By Thokozani Mnguni

Award winning Mandeni born and bred poet Smangele 'SimChina' Zungu (25) is set to host her second onewoman poetry show at Macambini Multi-purpose

Hall on 02 March 2019. Zungu is no stranger to hosting big events as she has previously hosted two successful Macambini Youth Talent Shows which were instrumental in unearthing new talents as well as her first

one-woman poetry show which attracted a huge number of poetry enthusiasts and fans of her work. The name of the upcoming show is 'Ebenezer One Woman Show', a reflection of a woman Zungu is, God fearing and a servant of the Lord. “My aim is to connect young people with their talents, I use art to educate young people about social issues. I also workshop and groom young poets and create a platform for them to showcase their talents said Zungu. Speaking of the upcoming event, Zungu cited that it is going to be a blend of poetry and musical content for people of all ages. “This event is for everyone, and I promise nothing but the best of SimChina. I also have new poems that I will unleash on the day. This is an even bigger and better extension of my first one-woman show” further said Zungu who is also an internet sensation after one of her poems reached more than 70 000 views on YouTube. Tickets for the upcoming show are selling fast.

MUSIC CONCERT: Mlindo the vocalist performing one of his hit songs at the Youth Uprising Concert held in Thembeni Sports Ground

CROWD: People from all around KwaDukuza come in numbers to enjoy the Youth Uprising Concert

By Thokozani Mnguni

KwaDukuza Municipality pulled off one of the best music concerts in the North Coast corridor on the weekend when the municipality turned eThembeni Sport Ground into a space of celebrating the local talents at the Youth Uprising Music Concert on 09 February 2019. Residents of KwaDukuza coming from various wards enjoyed different types of music genres performed by local artists and well-known names in the music industry such as Mlindo, Professor,

Oskido, Fikile Mlomo and many more. According to the Municipality they staged the music concert to give the local talent a platform to showcase their talent and to draw people to come and register to vote in the upcoming General Elections to be held in May 2019. The local talents and National artists did not disappoint as they kept the crowd entertained and on their feet throughout the concert, while MC of the day Hallo M dropped some of his best jokes to keep the

mass smiling while enjoying the beat at the same time. The atmosphere changed when the vastly awaited Mlindo “The Vocalist” took the stage at 2am, Mlindo did not let the fans down as he produced a breath taking performance. Xpress Times spoke to some of the attendees during the event, many expressed their fulfilment and the joy they experienced after the keenly awaited concert. They also appreciated KwaDukuza Municipality for pulling all the stops to bring them the Music Concert.

be short by just 4 runs. It was a good comeback by the New Zealanders who were able to reverse their defeat in the ODIs. They now prepare to meet Bangladesh in a series of ODIs and T20s from the end of this week. Meanwhile, in the Caribbean the dead rubber between the West Indies and England still has some life as England fights to avoid a 3-0 blackwash. The home side suffered a setback when their Captain, Jason Holder, was suspended for one match for his team's slow over rate in the last test. The match is at a stage where the Three Lions are holding an advantage after dismissing the Windies cheaply to leave them with a lead of 123 runs. After scoring 277 the English bowlers, led by Mark Wood, reduced the Maroon Caps from 57-0 to 154 all out. Bowling with pace and hostility as retaliation to the barrage that his batsmen had been subjected to, Wood (5-41) had the Windies batting in disarray. He was ably assisted by spinner Moeen Ali who took 3 wickets. With 3 days left, England has an overall lead of 142 runs with all 10 wickets in hand. pride before they host the World Cup later in May. Locally, the Momentum Cup began at various venues throughout the country. This is the national version of getting prospective candidates ready for the World Cup. While the squad will soon be involved in a another series against Sri Lanka, those who are on the fringe of selection will try to catch the selectors' eyes and make a last-minute impression on the men in suits. The Proteas still have one or two places up for grabs and, therefore, this ODI competition will hold the interest of the fans. Over the weekend, the batsmen held the ascendancy and big scores were recorded. There were wins for the Dolphins, the Titans and the Warriors. The series between SA and Sri Lanka begins today (Wed) at Kingsmead in the first test. The home side will start as overwhelming favourites as the Lankans have suffered some heavy defeats at the hands of England, Australia and New Zealand recently. Once again the Proteas will rely greatly on their fiery pace attack to dismantle the islanders' brittle batting missing the experience of Angelo Matthews (injured) and Dinesh Chandimal (dropped). Their hopes rest on the shoulders of their spinners who just might find the slower wickets in Durban and Port Elizabeth to their liking. It will be their batsmen who will be in the firing line. With Duane Olivier as the "enforcer", ably assisted by Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander, they will make life unpleasant for the Sri Lankans. Football this past weekend was dominated by the Soweto Derby. The FNB Stadium was packed to capacity with 85,000 spectators providing an

electric atmosphere in a cauldron of noise, excitement and expectation. It is in line with some of the biggest crowds that attend local derbies anywhere in the world including the Manchester derby, the Liverpool derby or the Madrid derby. But true to form there were only 2 goals as the sides shared the spoils 1-1. There hasn't been a positive result in the league encounters between these adversaries for quite some time. Is it because the powers that be would prefer for such a result to keep the supporters of the two sides happy and thus maintain the peace in the ground and outside ? Just a food for thought for the readership. In the EPL, the positions at the top of the log change almost everyday. At the start of the weekend Liverpool headed the log. By Sunday evening Manchester City regained the lead albeit on goal difference and having played a match more. Both have 65 points each followed by Tottenham Hotspurs with 60. The team that has made the most progress is Manchester United who were in 6th position for more than a month. Presently, they are lying 4th ahead of Chelsea who were thrashed by City 6-0 and Arsenal. This competition is going down to the wire with the top three teams in contention on a weekly basis. Just a slip by one of them will open the door for the other two. But there's still almost 3 months for the season's end and anything can happen between now and then. The first round of matches in the last 16 KO of the Champions League began yesterday (Tues) with Manchester United meeting Paris St Germain and Roma against Porto. Today (Wed) Spurs plays Borussia Dortmund and Ajax versus Real Madrid. The next set of games will be next week.

The last word. The picture and article in respect of the Gledhow ground where the fixtures of the Ilembe Cricket Union are played left little to the imagination. This Municipality for years has not carried out its mandate to provide decent facilities for the sportspeople of the town. Ever since this columnist can remember, post-1994, the Kwaduguza CU and later the Ilembe CU under the presidency of J.Singh, Y.Ismail and P.R.Maharaj , have had to fend for themselves. Except for the cutting of the grass, the maintenance of the pitch has been the responsibility of the Unions, together with marking of the wickets and putting the boundaries. But when the Central sports complex was sold for the building of a mall, the Municipality promised the cricketers that the replacement facilities would be better than the existing one. Sad to say, except for refurbishing the Gledhow ground, no sustainable maintenance was put in place. And now, the cricketers have to get to the ground, cut the grass, rake it, mark the wicket and then play. What type of performance would anybody expect from players who are already tired and frustrated ? Come on KDM, it's time to live up to your promises and provide the basics so that ordinary ratepayers are able to have their recreation in some comfort. The more things change, the more they remain the same ! Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.

Ruthless Raj seals a clinical Dawnheights performance Dawnheights, more especially Raj Verma sealed a clinical victory over Phoenix in a KwaZulu Natal Challenge League T20 played last Sunday. Dawnheights won toss and elected to bowl at a humid Phoenix. Good tight bowling

by Dawnheights gave a slow start to Phoenix. Phoenix lost both their openers in the power play. A good partnership was building up by 3rd and 4th batsmen and Dawnheights decided to introduce spin into the foray. This brought spin twins

Sibusiso Dlamini and Raj Verma after Ishan Kalia got rid of their aggressive no 4. Wickets tumbled at regular intervals with Raj and Dlamini claiming 3 and wickets apiece. The last wicket fell with the score on an even 100.

Morningside cricket club beat Manor Cricket Club in an iLembe District T20 “A” league match played this past Saturday at the Gledhow Cricket ground. A 10 man Morningside team lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Manor got off to the perfect start when they picked up the Morningside opener Lucky, with just 9 runs on the board. The third wicket fell pretty quickly thereafter with Gerard falling for nought and the score on 12 for 2. It looked pretty dismal for Morningside and could have been much worse, when Desigan dropped and absolute “Dolly” to give the Morningside Captain Preshen a second life. Preshen was on 10 at the time. It proved to be a costly mistake, as Preshen put on a 15 run partnership with Darien Perumal, before Perumal had to retire hurt. He hurt his shoulder diving to make his ground. Xolani Shobedi joined Preshen and the pair steadied the ship with a 5th wicket partnership of 40 runs. Preshen was eventually out to the bowling of Myuren. He made 67 valuable runs hitting 6 fours and 2 massive sixes. Morningside posted a below par 117 for 7 in their 20 overs. However this proved to be far too many runs for a hapless Manor team, who were bowled out for a paltry 87 runs in the 18th over. Manor lost wickets at regular intervals. The wicket of the day was that of Steven. He was brilliantly caught by Xolani Shobedi at backward point.

played under the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union Challenge league. iLembe skipper, Z. Ali won the toss and decided to bowl on a slightly damp wicket. Early success came to iLembe when F. Zaheed was caught behind off the bowling of Aaron Pillay for a duck in the 2nd over. In the 4th over, N. Sewsunkar became Pillay's next victim when he was stumped for 1. In the 9th over R. Mhlongo removed P. Moodley for 3. K. Sivai was Pillay's next victim when he was bowled for a duck in the 10th over with the score on 19. It became a procession as Verulam batsmen crumbled for 59 all out in 23 overs. Pillay took a record breaking 7/24 in his spell of 10 overs. In reply to such a meagre score iLembe lost openers Z. Ali and U. Hoosen for 17 runs. Thereafter, P. Naidoo (6*) and A. Bageloo (13*) steered iLembe to a comfortable 8 wickets victory. Manager of iLembe Cricket Club, N.R. Singh said that this Sunday's fixture is a crunch match against Umzinto at Gledhow Cricket Ground. Singh urged the fans to come out in their numbers to support iLembe Cricket in their quest for top honours.

The pick of the Morningside bowlers were Rajen, (Harry) Naidoo, 3 wickets for 8 runs in 3 overs, Rocky Mgohozi, 2 wickets for 17 runs in 4 overs, R. A message from the Mayor of iLembe District Municipality Cllr Siduduzo Gumede

“The iLembe District Municipality is pleased to join residents of KwaDukuza and surrounding areas in celebrating the Xpress Times on its 10th anniversary. I, personally, cannot believe that it has been 10 years since your first publication. How time really flies. When I joined this municipality in 2016 I was pleased to find that the Xpress Times was the first newspaper in the District to offer media support when we were faced with the drought in 2014. I cannot say I was surprised because I know the passion and love for the community that this publication is rooted in. We are often told that the media is the watchdog of government and as politicians we are expected to shy away from it. As true as this is, we appreciate media outlets such as yourselves for not only keeping us in check as we play our oversight role as councillors but also for the relentless support you have given to iLembe over the years. Community media is by far the most important section of media as it is closer to the people and a working relationship between the local media and local government is a crucial one as we both seek to make the lives of our people better. This type of media constitutes an important channel for government to listen to its citizens' concerns and respond timeously

THANK YOU KWADUKUZA business and community

ANNIVERSARY with communications remedies. I would like to take this opportunity to also encourage residents and the business community of KwaDukuza and the District as a whole to continue supporting this fine publication. To Ahmed and the rest of the team, thank you for keeping us in the know and abreast of the happenings of our beloved town and District. It really has been a Happy 10 Years indeed!”

Stanger Manor Primary School Principal, Isaac Abraham “On behalf of the school governing body, learners and educators of Stanger Manor Primary School may I take this opportunity of congratulating the Xpress Times on reaching such an important milestone-the celebration of 10 years of publication. Your success over the decade must be attributed to the sterling work of the editors and hardworking staff. It seemed just like yesterday that you started this community newspaper and today it has completed 10 years of successful publication. We are indebted to you for giving our learners exposure through the medium of

your newspaper which serves as a constant motivation for other learners to excel academically and on the sports arena. Your weekly publication serves as a resource to our learners each Wednesday, especially the Foundation Phase learners who use it in the classroom for their daily news. A hearty congratulation to you and your team for making the Xpress Times reach such a great height. We hope that your newspaper reaches greater heights in the future and it continues to keep entertaining passionate readers as it has been doing with each passing week.”

Glenhills Primary School Principal, Mr H. Hurilal “Since its inception, ten years ago, the Xpress Times has grown into one of the leading local newspapers in KwaDukuza, which provides its readership with in-depth reports and news on local and national news. I hope the paper will gain the loyalty of even more readers in the next decade. On this 10th anniversary celebration, I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to the management and staff for the distinguished

news coverage and distribution of the newspaper. May you grow from strength to strength and continue with your invaluable contribution to the community of KwaDukuza and the surrounding areas. Once again, I congratulate you on the 10th anniversary of the Xpress Times.”

Stanger Primary School Principal, Ms MC Williamson

“Congratulations on your 10th Anniversary. May you continue your journey of success with pride. Thank you for inspiring and supporting us on our journey of becoming.”

KwaDukuza Volleyball Association President, Isaac Abraham

“KwaDukuza Volleyball Association (KDVA) takes this opportunity of congratulating the Xpress Times on the celebration of your 10th year anniversary. As a community newspaper we commend you for upholding your Corporate Social Responsibility and investing in sport. Your generous sponsorship of the Xpress Times Easter Knockout Cup over the last five years is indeed a highlight on the volleyball calendar with players and officials waiting with bated breath before the draws are done each year during the Easter period. We acknowledge the tremendous coverage volleyball has received over the last 10 years through the medium of your newspaper. We are indebted to your Sports Editor who is at the courts during our volleyball matches and ensures maximum coverage of all games. Long live the Xpress Times!”
