Break lockdown rules - Pay the price he South African Judiciary has published a series of directives which outline how much citizens will have to pay in 'admission of guilt' fines if they are found to breach the country's lockdown rules. The South African Police Service may give a person, who has been arrested on suspicion of a less serious crime, an option to pay an admission of guilt fine. Such a fine allows a person to admit guilt for a less serious offence without having to appear in court. This prevents an unnecessary overload of the court system. It is meant to resolve less serious matters quickly where an accused person accepts responsibility for having committed a minor offence. The directives are based on provincial and magistrate districts, and are in line with the new level 4 lockdown regulations which were introduced from 1 May. The directives also provide on how the court plans to deal with these cases, with KZN indicating that it will reserve judgement for

MANDENI: On 08 May 2020, the Mayor of Mandeni Local Municipality visited two shelters - one housing disabled people and the other victims of rape & social ills. The first stop was House of Hope, and the second stop was the Ikhwezi welfare. During his visit, Mayor Mdlalose donated food parcels to ensure that these shelters cope during the lockdown
Confirmed Covid-19 cases increase Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced on Tuesday afternoon that South Africa has over 11 000
confirmed cases of Covid-19. As of Monday night, there were 206 Covid-19 deaths in the country. Mkhize said there were 698 new infections, taking the total cases to 11 350. The country is currently in Day 47 of its national lockdown which was instituted to curb the spread of the virus. In easing into level 4 of the lockdown, the
wearing of cloth masks became compulsory for all who were in public. Shops are refusing to serve those who do not cover their faces. On the last week of the level 5 lockdown, South Africa saw 1 694 new infections - between April 24 and April 30. In the same period, there were 24 Covid-19 related deaths. Mkhize said just under 370 000 people had now been tested for the virus, with the last 13 630 tests conducted over the last 24 hours.

Video of scuffle with KDM officers goes viral A video of a screaming 4year-old child allegedly being dragged out of a Chaka's Rock complex by KwaDukuza Municipality officers on Sunday has gone viral. In the video, a man believed to be the child's father can be seen trying to pull his son away from the officers. It is alleged that the officers arrived at the complex to arrest several families for failing to comply with the lockdown regulations. KwaDukuza Municipality
in a statement said that they are conducting an internal investigation on the “scuffle”. “KwaDukuza Municipality notes the video making rounds on Social Media of two of its peace officers who “seem” to be in a scuffle with father and child in the Shakas Rock area in Ballito. At the outset, we want to say that we do not condone any form of abuse levelled against our residents particularly women and children. We are, currently, engaged with an
internal investigation to ascertain facts of the whole incident but do take cognisance of the emotive issues that the circulating video has stirred. KwaDukuza Municipality will issue a formal statement on this subject, once it has concluded the relevant consultations. We appeal for calm and cooperation in our community whilst we endeavour to deal with this matter.”
Ramaphosa urges citizens to be prepared for new reality
President Cyril Ramaphosa said that people should be prepared "to live with the coronavirus among us for a year or even more", adding that people should expect an increase in Covid-19 infections as more people return to work. In his weekly newsletter on Monday, the president said, "We will be no different. We can and must expect infections to rise as more people return to work. We must accept the reality, prepare for it and adapt to it," Ramaphosa said. He said the demands on
clinics, hospitals and medical personnel will grow. “As the lockdown is gradually eased, life will slowly return. But it will not be life as we knew it before. While there is still much about the pandemic that is unknown, experts now agree that the virus will remain a threat to global public health for some time. We must, therefore, be prepared to continue to live with the coronavirus among us for a year or even more. We must be prepared for a new reality in which the fight against Covid-19 becomes part of
our daily existence. Our success in overcoming the coronavirus will ultimately be determined by the changes we make in our behaviour. Even after lockdown especially after lockdown we will still need to observe social distancing, wear face masks, wash hands regularly, and avoid contact with other people. We will need to re-organise workplaces, schools, universities, colleges and other public places to limit transmission,” said Ramaphosa.
KZN teachers told to stay home for now
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has instructed teachers not to return to school on Monday, May 11. According to KZN DBE Head of Department, Dr Enoch Nzama, the decision comes following engagements with various stakeholders in which it was revealed that deep cleaning and other health-related issued had not been confirmed at all schools. Nzama added that an internal meeting to review the situation was still to be confirmed. "Since the Department of Education cannot really ascertain the exact date upon which the workforce can be expected to resume the 30% functioning stage, formal communication will be issued in due course," he
said. Nzama said district offices, circuit offices and schools were instructed to postpone the resumption of workers, school management teams and teachers until further notice. He said as per the last instruction to department officials, it was anticipated that a deep cleaning of school work stations would have commenced on May 6. Last month, DBE minister Angie Motshekga announced that schooling for certain grades would resume from June. She said SMTs were meant to return on May 11 while teachers were due back on May 18. On Thursday, the minister issued a warning to schools to refrain from opening early. According to DBE national
spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, they had received information about some private and public schools that were planning to re-open before May 11. "In some schools teachers have already been reporting for duty and parents meetings have been held where plans were announced to have pupils back in school in May. The premature reopening of schools is not permitted as the department is still finalising Covid-19 school compliance protocols. The uniform standards will be applicable in schools as part of the measures put in place to protect learners and teachers, reduce infection and save the academic year," Mhlanga said. He said the minister had already indicated how she intends to have schools reopening and until a final decision is made no school may proceed to open. "The minister will next week return to the National Coronavirus Command Council to present an enhanced recovery plan for the basic education based on inputs and feedback received thus far," Mhlanga said.
Unlicenced firearms seized
Good Samaritans repair roads
UNLAWFUL: Unlicenced firearms recovered
Shakaville residents, Michael Mgade and Mandla Gumede have taken it upon themselves to start repairing roads in the Oceanview area by filling huge potholes with sand. It has made a great difference to the community. Should they still be working in the area, we urge the community to reward them for their efforts
On Saturday, 25 April 2020, members of iLembe Cluster Rapid Response Team together with KDM Crime Prevention members proceeded to follow up on information about a suspect with a firearm in the Ntshawini area. Upon police entering the house, a gun battle took place which resulted in a suspect being fatally wounded and a second person fleeing the scene. Whilst trying to trace the suspect who fled, it was established that the person who fled was wanted on several serious cases. With the help of informers, members of iLembe Cluster Rapid Response team managed to trace the person to his homestead in Doringkop area. Informers were tasked to monitor the activities at the homestead. Although some of the occupants left the area, informers verified several firearms that were left in the homestead. On 9 May, members of iLembe Cluster Rapid Response Team, STF and Col. Ngubane of Newark SAPS hit the said target which resulted in three people being
charged for being in possession of unlicenced firearms and unlawful possession of live ammunition.
