Bold action needed to end loadshedding, says Ramaphosa By Xpress Reporter
President Cyril Ramaphosa says bold and decision action is needed, if the country entertains any hopes of ending loadshedding. Writing in his weekly newsletter on Monday this week, Ramaphosa conceded that the ongoing rolling blackouts had come at a huge cost to the economy, and that people's lives had been disrupted. The President said government's immediate priority is to stabilise the country's electricity system. Eskom has attributed the persistent loadshedding to the recent strike by its workers, and the delay in returning some generation units to service. “As the system recovers and generation capacity is restored, Eskom will be able to reduce load shedding to lower stages. “The agreement reached between Eskom and labour unions will enable critical repairs and return additional units to operation. The transmission line from Cahora Bassa in Mozambique has been restored, adding 600 MW to the grid, and Medupi Unit 6 returned to service on Saturday, adding another 720 MW. Additional units will come back online during the coming week, further easing the current shortfall,” Ramaphosa stated. The country is also exploring renewable energy options as a means to augment electricity supply.
BOLD: President Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa
“In addition to the procurement of new generation capacity through this programme, the increase of the licensing threshold for new generation projects to 100 MW means that private investors do not require a license to build generation facilities up to this size. This simple reform has unlocked a massive potential pipeline of investment. “Eskom has made land available next to existing power stations for private investment in renewable energy projects. Design modifications have been completed to improve the performance of Medupi units 1, 2 and 3 and are underway in units 5 and 6. “While these actions are significant and will bear fruit over the coming months, they are clearly not enough to address the crisis that we face. “What the past two weeks have demonstrated is that we need to do more and do so with the utmost urgency,” Ramaphosa said. The President added that there has
been efforts behind the scenes, involving various cabinet ministers and senior officials, to seek ways to increase electricity supply.
Bold action “The message is clear: This is no time for business as usual. We need to act boldly to make load shedding a thing of the past. “While the measures we have already taken will secure the supply of reliable and affordable electricity into the future, we have been looking at what additional measures we can take now to bring that goal closer. “We will soon be completing the detailed work and consultations needed to finalise these further measures. We will then, in the coming days, be able to announce a comprehensive set of actions to achieve much faster progress in tackling load shedding. “There are no easy solutions to our electricity crisis,” The President concluded.

The governing part also said it had received reports of some councillors “who are undermining the organisation by not attending meetings and programmes that are meant to
deal with issues and come up with strategies on how this mass democratic movement can be able to assist the people on the ground”.

REBUILDING: KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala says rebuilding of KZN after last year's rots is still underway
By Xpress Reporter
With South Africa casting a pained glance back at the deadly and destructive riots of July 2021, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala has reminded the people of KZN of the dire effects of the looting on the economy, lives and livelihoods. The province suffered damages running into billions of Rands, with many lives being lost, as the country witnessed unprecedented scenes of bedlam, violence, looting and destruction in KZN and Gauteng provinces, in July last year. Premier Zikalala said rebuilding efforts were still underway in the province, a year after the looting. “The impact of the unrest was not homogeneous and affected some sectors more than others. The retail industry disproportionately bore the
majority of the impact, with over 200 shopping malls targeted and 1 787 retail stores looted and damaged. “The aftermath of the unrest saw government swiftly embarking on a mission to stabilize the situation through a coordinated raft of measures seeking to restore security and order, clean up the environment, and provide support in various forms to help rebuild lives and livelihoods, support industrial capacity in order to increase chances of continued operations and safe guard loss of jobs. “These efforts were intended to reverse both the social and economic impact of the unrest, restore business confidence, and reverse the potential for capital flight in the province and business retention while saving employment,” the Premier said. Zikalala added that, in

move with both agility, urgency and speed in reducing socioeconomic inequalities because this is the only way social cohesion will be achieved. All reports delivered post the unrest are very clear that the racialised economy which perpetuates racial inequality, joblessness and poverty militates against our efforts to build a society founded on justice, equality and human dignity. “As we address the impact of the July 2021 Social Unrest, let also take heed of the lessons from the past and address the underlying challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality. Without addressing these, we may as well be accused of not being true to the mission of building one KwaZulu-Natal in which all of us can find space to fulfil our dreams and those of generations to come,” Zikalala said.

CHAOS: The country remembers the violence, destruction and economic pandemonium of July 2021
iLembe District, the rebuilding of Isithebe Industrial Estate was still in progress, with many of the shopping malls that were targeted having been repaired and reopened to the public. “The July 2021 civil unrest affected not only cities but equally had a devastating impact in townships and rural towns alike as presented in the previous sections of this report. We are mindful of the fact that we cannot eradicate poverty without devising strategies and programmes that target people living in rural areas and townships. “(The) Provincial Government's Township and Rural Revitalisation Strategy aims to stimulate economic activity in townships and rural areas through implementing programmes targeting poverty and unemployment. “What the unrests taught us is that the government need to

The South African government has identified two categories of people who are “encouraged” to continue wearing face coverings, following the recent scrapping of all Cvid-19 related regulations. In a statement issued by the Cabinet on Monday, following its meeting held on Thursday last week, government reminded South Africans that Covid-19 was still in existence, despite the earlier decision to drop all
regulations and masks mandate. Cabinet has also taken the opportunity to thank all South Africans who have taken the trouble to get vaccinated. “We must not be complacent as COVID-19 is still in our midst. Although the country recently scrapped the compulsory wearing of masks in public, people with comorbidities and those who are ill are encouraged to continue wearing a mask. We must also continue to wash or
sanitise our hands, and observe social distancing and proper ventilation. “Vaccination remains the scientifically proven defence against COVID-19 and Cabinet encourages all unvaccinated people to vaccinate without delay and vaccinated people to get their booster shots at their nearest vaccination sites, for free,” Cabinet said. Cabinet has also noted efforts by the National Department of Health and the National Institute for
Communicable Diseases (NICD) to continue assessing the situation around the Monkeypox disease, with three cases having been confirmed in the country so far. “The monkeypox virus is not easily spread and usually only occurs after close contact such as kissing, cuddling or touching parts of the body with monkeypox lesions. People without monkeypox symptoms cannot spread the virus to others. “Cabinet advised people who experience symptoms of fever, general flu-like signs, followed by a blister-like rash to report to their nearest healthcare facility for early detection and treatment,” Cabinet stated.
Latest SA Covid-19 statistics Infections still disturbingly high By Xpress Reporter
While government has recently removed all Covid19 regulations, the number of daily new infections remains disturbingly high. This seems to underscore recent warnings by government that the pandemic is still with us. In the latest data released by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), 706 new cases were recorded, again with Gauteng accounting for most of the cases. Four people lost their lives due to Cvid-19 related complications, in the same period. Government says the recovery rate sits at 97.3%, which augurs well with the decision to remove protocols and regulations. The number of active cases is 7 854. The country has
recorded 101 880 death related to Copvid019, since the start of the pandemic. The cumulative number of positive cases now stands at just under four million, with 3 887 740 recoveries' having been recorded. The vaccine uptake remains a major concern for government, however it is heart-warming to note that the country has so far administered 36 962 546 vaccine doses. Tests conducted thus far come in at 25 826 822. Meanwhile, the Department has announced some changes to its Covid-19 reporting procedures. "As of 9 July 2022, the Department of Health will no longer be reporting COVID-19 stats over weekends. The reporting of data will resume on Mondays to Fridays, while aggregate reports for the weekend period will be released on Mondays, or the next weekday following a public holiday,” the Department started.
Commemorating Plastic Free July
Recycling is e m p h a s i z e d everywhere, but there's not enough holiday to indeed enforce the idea of how easy it is to recycle. When it comes to plastic, plastic has become the number one product people use each day, despite how damaging it is to the environment. Plastic Free July is a holiday dedicated to teaching people about the dangers of plastic and challenges people to avoid plastic for a month. Read more to learn about its history and see how you can get started. History of Plastic Free July Beginning with just a handful of participants in Western Australia back in 2011, the holiday idea has since grown into its own independent, non-profit organization and an annual event in over 150 countries. They originally began through the organization Earth Carers, a community that focuses on a wide range of environmental issues in the world and educates people about the consequences of hurting the environment. Their vision, after separating and becoming their own organization, is all about a world without plastic waste, and many people caught on to the message they sent out because of their concerns for plastic waste across the globe. Hence, Plastic Free July is all about encouraging people to be more aware of their plastic use and creating a cleaner world as a result. People can participate in this holiday by avoiding all products that use plastic products in them throughout the whole month of July. This holiday also helps educate people about the different types of plastics out there and what happens in the recycling system when plastic is introduced. This initiative aims to challenge the material system the world has in place when it comes to its economy, focusing its efforts on a global span as well as a personal one. By reducing how much a person uses, they can make a small difference and help others do the same. How to celebrate Plastic Free July Begin by avoiding single-use plastic such as straws, water bottles, and plastic produce bags. Use more reusable products such as glass jars, metal utensils, and use metal tin lunch boxes and containers for storage. Avoid highly processed foods and begin using homemade recipes. Learn how to make your products like toothpaste, deodorant, and mouthwash.

“What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments but what is woven into the lives of others.” Pericles A dreamer, an artist, a dad, a husband, a brother, a man with a vision beyond ours. Dino Sukdeo, a 70-year-old Stanger resident, was no ordinary soul. If ever you met him, his vision and passion spoke more than just his words. You would not always get it because it seemed that he lived in a world more futuristic than ours. This charismatic personality lived beyond boundaries. His journey through life was not easy. Life threw many obstacles at his feet, and he rose above (them) like a phoenix (rises) from the ashes. Dino Sukdeo was a wellknown personality in KwaDukuza. Upon entering our little town, you would notice the beautiful gardens at the Dawnside intersection and go further up into the Stanger Manor intersection; our flowery language comes to life.
This beauty was created and maintained by a humble man, yet most people would never know that while he toiled in the sun for hours and days, sowing plants with his family and a small team of kind sponsors, uncle Dino was silently battling cancer. It never stopped him in any way. Even from his hospital bed, he worked tirelessly messaging his team and sponsors, constantly making plans. His creativity and genius (was) always one step ahead. At the entrance of KwaDukuza hospital, there is a smiling dreadlocked face and his rock buddies greeting you. All of this was done by Uncle Dino, who turned scrap into art. It was his expression of gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of the hospital who cared for him. There is more; this tribute is for a life well lived and a legacy beyond. A tribute is usually a grand expression of a legacy, and it would be a great injustice to the soul we knew and loved if the vision of a great man was
Uncle Dino Sukdeo, a life well lived
not shared. For uncle Dino's 70th in May 2022, he wanted 1000 trees to be planted anywhere in your garden or community garden and for the photos to be uploaded to his Facebook page. He never wanted a glorified string of words. He wanted
action, participation and his vision for a better world, a better place for our children and our children's children to be realiseda man who tried to heal the world in his own special way. It is now our story to continue.
