JOVIAL: Ward 19 Councillor, Sandeep Oudhram hosted a celebration in commemoration of Women's Month

By Xpress Reporter

Ward 19 Councillor, Sandeep Oudhram held his weekly meeting with residents on Wednesday, 28 August 2013. This time, the meeting was held at the KwaDukuza Town Hall. According to Councillor Oudhram, this light-hearted event was held in commemoration of Women's Month. “We usually have our weekly meetings and discuss serious matters, but today we are hosting the meeting here to celebrate Women's Month,” he said. KwaDukuza Municipality Deputy Mayor, Councillor Dolly Govender was present at the cheerful function where the community and councillors enjoyed a night of entertainment together.

The South African Democratic Te a c h e r ' s U n i o n ( S A D T U ) KwaDukuza branch held a mass meeting at the Sabha Hall on Monday, 9 September 2013. The meeting was held to discuss what had happened during the course of last week (SADTU sends out 'work to rule' message: 6-09-2013) because SADTU members from KwaZuluNatal were on “work to rule” from Monday the 2 September 2013. According to Branch Secretary, Nkanyiso Gumede, this is the first time any union has engaged in an undefined strike. “The strike action called 'work to rule' is like being on a go slow and

some members don't understand what a go slow is and there is no specific definition of a go slow.” He added that the members were then advised that the strike action will continue until all demands are met and urged teachers to attend school. Department orders will reportedly not be carried out like timetable dates for exams or the internal assessments but all internal exams set by the school will continue as normal. SADTU were reportedly surprised by the quick negotiations during the week with the Department of Education meeting 95% of their demands. Schools that had not cancelled exams were scheduled to carry on only between 7:30 am and 2pm.

UDF commemoration held at local auditorium By Xpress Reporter

The African National Congress (ANC) Greater KwaDukuza Region commemorated the United Democratic Front (UDF) 30th anniversary at the iLembe Auditorium on Friday, 6 September 2013. The UDF was an umbrella organisation that led an en masse mobilization against the apartheid government in the 1980's. According to Slindile Ngcobo, ANC media liaison, many stalwarts and officials visited the grave of the late General Justice Gizenga Mpanza (a UDF icon). “The event was attended by hundreds of people from the Indian community, stemming

from the pivotal and historic role that was played by the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) in organizing other civic organisations to establish the UDF after the banning of the ANC,” said Ngcobo. The ANC Provincial Secretary, Sihle Zikalala, delivered a keynote address in which he emphasized the Indian Community's importance as a key component of the ANC. “History reminds us that the Indians fought alongside the ANC and later UDF against apartheid,” said Zikalala. Paul David, a KwaDukuza struggle stalwart, was at that time one of the leaders of the UDF and worked closely with Archibald Gumede. David remembered how he

In his memorial lecture he said that at first it was difficult to get the UDF off the ground in this Region but once General Gizenga Mpanza, who was a prominent leader of the ANC in KwaDukuza, was released from Robben Island after being imprisoned for 15 years “he was a great influence in elevating the struggle of the UDF in KwaDukuza.” The iLembe District Municipality (IDM) responded to the incident where flames broke out “as a result of wiring problems.” “It is with sadness that this coincided with the UDF 30th anniversary Commemoration

event and took place while a senior member of the ANC was addressing the audience. The fire was extinguished using fire extinguishers on the property before it caused any further damage,” said IDM liaison official Khululiwe Makhaye. She added that after the incident, an inspection was carried out by the IDM Facility Management Officer and it was discovered that the problem was with the electricity wiring. A requisition for a service provider has been done to attend to the problem. The Mayor of iLembe D i s t r i c t M u n i c i p a l i t y, Councillor SW Mdabe would like to apologise to those who attending the 30th UDF Commemoration.

A delegation from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) in Switzerland visited the iLembe District Municipality last week to finalise partnership worth millions of Swiss Francs. The partnership will result in growth for the district. The visit started off with a joint executive committee meeting between Mandeni, KwaDukuza and iLembe municipalities and the SECO delegation last Wednesday September 4 at iLembe House. This was followed by site visits to various Local and Economic Development (LED) projects in KwaDukuza and Mandeni including the agri-hubs in

Mandeni and the Tugela Bulk Water project in KwaDukuza and many others. SECO is a government centre that is part of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research in Switzerland. Head of Operations of the Economic Development Cooperation Directorate at SECO, Mr Ivo Germann said iLembe was chosen because it is a prime example of a centre of economic growth. “Even after the economic downfall, iLembe had the sharpest recovery and overcame the crisis. It was able to stand up again and be part of sustaining growth in the country. In iLembe, we don't have to look for growth

or create it,” he said. Germann mentioned that SECO would make a contribution valued at R80 million (R7, 5 Million Swiss Francs) The Deputy Mayor of iLembe District Municipality Councillor Dolly Shandu gave an overview of the district and expressed her appreciation for the assistance SECO is bringing to the district. “ We h o p e t h a t t h i s cooperation will not only be but span beyond the set four initial years in assisting the district in achieving its vision which is to be a world class African destination with excellent services and qaulity of life for its people by 2027,” she said.

Criminal vengeance Two Tugela residents appeared in court on a charge of robbery last week. Venida Appadu and her friend Kareen Padayachee allege that they had just arrived from work and were accosted by a youth whose face was partially covered with a bandana. He took their jewellery and bags and Venida ran to a nearby house for help whilst he held Kareen up at knife-point. A neighbour assisted and they managed to identify the culprit. Police later arrested Christopher Naidoo (23) who implicated Keshini Reddy (33) as the mastermind behind the robbery as she believes she was dismissed from her workplace by the victims. Both Naidoo and Reddy were granted bail and will be back at court on 16 October.

Too slow Determined criminals have to now contend with determined victims. Slindokuhle Khoza alleges that she and her sister were walking to board a taxi at the rank. An unknown y o u t h snatched her p u r s e containing R38:00 and f l e d . Attracted by Street their screams, security from the market plaza joined the victims in their pursuit and managed to apprehend the culprit a n d recovered the purse and c a s h . Plenty of fish in the sea The old adage of their being “plenty of fish in the sea” when one breaks up with a partner did not really work for a Zimbabwean living in Groutville. Happiness Ngidi alleges that she informed her boyfriend that she no longer wished to be in a relationship with him. Later that day she went to his house to pick up her clothing. She alleges that he closed the door and tried to smooth talk her into staying. On seeing her determination to leave, he allegedly hit her with a sjambok and she did eventually depart and reported the matter to police. Ocean Ndlovu (24) was charged for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was granted bail at court and is expected to be back at court on 31 October.

Brothers in arms Two brothers will become better acquainted as they spend the next week in prison pending an investigation whether they may be granted bail or not. Their arrest follows an attack on Sintombile Mhlalalwane. The victim alleges he was confronted by the brothers on his return home who accused him of having assaulted one of them during April. They removed their t-shirts and exposed firearms they had in their belts. On seeing the weapons he fled and one shot was fired at him which missed. Police were alerted and found a spent cartridge at the crime scene. Both Thembinkosi Zubane (41) and Sibusiso Zubane (30) were arrested and charged for attempted murder. They will seek bail this week.

A chance meeting Milton Ndlela of Shakaville is a happily confused victim. He alleges that he was requested by two youths to assist with their troublesome vehicle. They climbed into the rear of his bakkie and directed him to an isolated area before New Guelderland. When he came to a stop the youths attacked him and shot him in the back before making off with his cash and bank cards. A companion of his was taken hostage by the youths who drove off with her and returned a short while later. With her help, the badly injured Ndlela managed to drive himself to Stanger hospital where he was admitted. A week later he spotted the two attackers

Only the best When two Monkey Town friends decided to spend an afternoon indulging in alcohol they pooled their finances and purchased a bottle of Smirnoff and tonic water. However, security at Manor Liquor became concerned when one youth returned and left the store without selecting anything. Suspicious by this act, they called the youth aside and on searching him found a bottle of Knights Finest Matured whiskey valued at R91 tucked inside his trousers. Njabulo Mhlongo (30) spent a cold night in the local cells and pleaded guilty to theft the following day. For his troubles he was slapped with a fine of R500 or 50 days imprisonment.

A local business was held up at gun point on Friday 6 September at 4:30pm. According to a worker at the store four men held the shop were involved in the robbery three with guns and one of the suspects stood outside of the shop. The worker said that two of the men had come in earlier at around 12pm and acted as buyers but the same men had returned with two more members in afternoon. Three men entered the shop while one member stood guard outside. In a state of

shock the worker ran at the gun men screaming and kicking at them which caught the robbers off guard which resulted in a gunshot being fired but luckily no one was injured and nothing was taken from the shop as the robbers fled the scene of the crime. According to the worker two of the men were foreigners and spoke fluent English and one of the robbers had a burn scar on his throat. The owner believes that these four men are connected to other robberies that have been reported in the area.

Thanks to the many intelligent readers who responded well to what I wrote, based on what was discussed with me. I REALLY appreciate your inputs, as the more voices of discontent we listen to, the more our government should realize that this is not a matter to be taken lightly. It is outrageous and scandalous that the term 'strike season' has become acceptable in South Africa. It would certainly not affect the wealthy, although we all pay the same increase for basic items. My view is that any employer should realize that the fuel price hike is gone berserk, the concomitant rise in COL is shocking, and that 'strikers' are normal people who have families to support. The boss should then take the initiative and adjust the salaries of his employees instead of waiting for them to grovel, 'toy toy', roll on the roads, chant struggle songs

September 13, 2013

Visit South Africa…it's a striking country!! and come with begging bowls for a salary increase. I was somewhat taken aback when I heard our nonchalant, globetrotting president say that 'nothing will be achieved by striking.' Goodness gracious, how conveniently we forget those things that brought us to where we are! Strike action and bringing the country to its knees did it for the ANC! The president should realize the urgent need to address the workers' demands so that the wheels of the economy can continue to progress. He should also remain at home, roll up his sleeves, recommit to Masakhane and not wait for election time to assume fake smiles and knock on doors for votes. Attending 'G8 and BRICS' summits and pretending that everything at home is hunky dory is deceptive and everyone can see through it. Before you rub shoulders with leaders of highly- advanced, progressive countries, attend to the shambles in your own country. Do not abdicate your role, escape the crisis, and smile in the face of adversity. I do appreciate that teachers have been grossly underpaid over the years, and that promises of increases that were made should be

delivered. I was told by two governing body members that senior SADTU officials entered a school and threatened children not to attend classes. As much as I do not blame my colleagues, I take great umbrage when professionally-qualified shapers of young minds boycott classes and use children as pawns in this nasty political game. I acknowledge that it is a double-edged sword and very sensitive, as committed teachers are the elite intelligentsia of any progressive society. They should instill in pupils wholesome values and a work ethic. I mean every word! Those people who administer the education budget or occupy any position of

significance should stop dragging their heels and deliver on the pledges, or gracefully resign and leave the post to more competent people. I have always maintained that if you are given a job, and after a while you are confused and can't handle the pressure, get another less- challenging job. You can't stay on, accept the huge salary and do nothing to fulfill your job description. How will the grade 12 students assess their readiness if they have not been subjected to a preparatory examination? My heart goes out to them, but we hope that nothing affects their study schedule. Just forge ahead and God will help you. Let's hope that common sense prevails and that all the strikes are resolved and reach an amicable end. Keep your thoughts flowing and the letters rolling.

KwaDukuza male charged for rape of minor By Xpress Reporter

According to Captain Thulani Zwane, SAPS KwaZulu-Natal Media centre, a 28-year-old man has been jailed for 18 years for the statutory rape of a teenager by the KwaDukuza Regional Court. He said that the teenager's parents had asked the 28-

year-old to stop seeing their daughter, but he continued the relationship and had sex with her. “The parents opened a case and he was arrested and charged with statutory rape. He was sentenced on Monday for raping his 14year-old girlfriend,” said Captain Thulani Zwane.

Darnall Secondary in dire need

PLEASE HELP: Learners of Darnall Secondary School that ask the community for help

By Xpress Reporter

The Darnall Secondary School is embarking on an ambitious drive to raise funds that will be used to address the urgent need of chairs, desks, chalkboards, doors, outdoor benches, sporting equipment and more. The late Professor Kader Asmal first teaching post was at this State aided school which was established in 1949. The school was closed on three separate occasions due to water being closed because they could not pay their water account due to learners being unable to

afford school fees. Is the only Englsih medium school after a former Model C school in Mandeni has exorbitant school fees which forces learners from Mandeni to attend Darnall Secondary. S'phamandla “MarazA” Mhlongo presenter from Gelezi Mathi on (SABC) television is a former learner who is also trying to assist in this regard. An urgent appeal is made to all ex-learners and exeducators to help uplift school by supporting Darnall Secondary School. Contact Mrs LJ Naidoo on 032 486 1327 for more information

They are service providers in the repair and manufacture of leather goods, specializing in hand bags, filter bags, holsters and also sell leather belts. “Thank you to our customers. We are always willing to help and serve you with a smile,” said Lalita. Our editor, Mr Asmal, has been a long-standing friend of the Kalidas family and their relationship began when he was still in high school. “The ever-smiling Ratilal was one of a kind. When he took your shoe in for repairs, and promised to give it to you in a day's time, he meant it. It was ready and waiting for you. I have only fond memories of Ratilal and have extended this friendship to Dhilesh,” said Mr Asmal.

The Harry Bodasing Primary School handed a cheque of R1000.00 to the C h i l d We l f a r e S A : KwaDukuza to purchase nappies for abandoned babies placed at the Society's safe house facility. The funds were collected by 20 learners who belong to the Soul Buddies group with Principal Mr K Bodasing overseeing the whole process.

The Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza placed on record their sincere appreciation to the learners for their effort in raising funds for the disadvantaged children. The initiative, hard work and commitment of the learners were also commended. Mr K Bodasing said that he tried to instil good values and leadership qualities in his pupils which will enable them to help the community.

Prof. Yisa And Mama Koshay

I used MAGIC RING to pay my debts : the sheriffs department debt collectors have been harassing me for 3 years due to debts that have been lingering with me, other events happened including cutting off my electricity (power). Telephone line and water supply. I was blacklisted. I can’t get loan anywhere. This was putting a strain on my family especially my son who was an alcoholic & not employed which led him taking drugs. I was so stressed and my life was down, but one day I heard about Prof Yisa and Mama Koshay on radio. I took his number and decided to contact him. We set an appointment and I could not believe they showed me my enemies in a white pot. They prayed for me and also gave me a casino magic ring, every machine I played I won a jackpot. Secondly few days after seeing Prof. Yisa I was promoted at work now we are living a beautiful life with my family. I thank prof. Yisa and Mama Koshay. LONG LIVE Mama Money MAMA MADINA The White Wizard With water from SHATT AL ARAB and a symbol of prosperity in winning casino and lotto. I spend 30 years in marriage without happiness, no children and so stressful. I had something like demon which used to like sleep with me day and night. Our business started to make losses even time came my husband Sincthi Patel became impotent, imagine 30 years no sign of baby until one of our friends in business told us about one of the supernatural, white wizard (Water from the river Tigris the water from this river is a symbol of prosperity in winning casino, lotto, boost business or any kind of protection, so this mama helped us to overcome our problems. We won 2.9 million rands in casino and now I'm four months pregnant and we are happy now with my husband and our business. So anybody who needs change in his/her family life call :

074 205 7884 This Mama she doesn’t use blood to make sacrifices she uses spiritual water Find Mama in Stanger

After 7 years in pain I’m finally happy. Many years back before I met this powerful spiritual healer MAMA MADINA there was no happiness in my life. I had visited many healers but nobody could help. They only asked for money. Many years back I lost my husband. He left me with two kids. Fortunately we had built a house and had a small business I am currently running. But my in-laws turned against me and wanted to take my house away because I was not officially married to him. I became so worried about my children because the business wasn’t doing so well. The insurance also delayed to release the money that belonged to my husband. As I read of MAMA MADINA a healer in one of the local newspapers. She helped me so much. My in-laws changed and became so friendly again. They left me in the house. My business started doing well. The insurance also released the money that belonged to my husband. We are happy now with my children. I don’t know how much I can thank MAMA MADINA but only God knows. Long live MAMA MADINA. MAMA MADINA also helps in problems with giving luck, lost lovers, family problems, financial problems, tokoloshe in homes etc. So if you have suffered enough, rush to her for help. Guaranteed you will be happy again. NB. Don’t consider your problem too big because it’s very small compared to MAMA MADINA’s powers.

SADTU - Go Slow, Poor Show!

Henry Adams aptly wrote: "Teachers affect eternity - they can never tell where or when their influence will end.'' With this in mind, I read with great interest about the recent SADTU strike but with even greater dismay about their disruption of the matric trial exams. Whilst teachers have the inalienable right to strike and whilst I agree with some of their legitimate grievances, it appears that the timing of the strike has been preconceived and designed to coincide with the writing of the trial exams. If this is true, it is a shameful and despicable action that deserves the strongest condemnation. There is a very fine line between earning support and achieving contempt for one's cause. Sympathy can very quickly turn into disgust! This is especially true when one resorts to unlawful and unconstitutional acts such as preventing principals from collecting matric trial papers from the Education department's offices. Worse still is the anomaly that those that are entrusted with the advancement of education of our children actually become obstacles and hinderances toward that noble objective. This is akin to the ordinary mob mentality whom in their quest for delivery of basic services resort to the burning and destroying of State infrastructure. Further, it is interesting to note that the ''work-to-rule'' (a non-sensical term in itself!) strike action advocates a 7 hour work day! Is this not the norm already with all the other SADTU-led actions such as ''go-slows'' and mass marches on school days??? Is it not possible to

Earnest appeal to cane farmers Through the medium of your weekly newspaper, I make an earnest and impassioned plea to all sugar cane farmers in the Lower Tugela area to stop the practice of burning sugar cane fields, before reaping it. The past two weeks in particular have been trauma and hell for the residents of Stanger and its surrounds. With the strong south easterly winds blowing at this time of the year, we are at our wits end. Our yards, pathways, swimming pools, washed cars, curtains, verandahs, interior floors, clothes on the washing lines etc. are all affected with smut from the burning cane. Stanger is a town surrounded by sugar cane plantations. I urge farmers who are conducting farming operations, close to Stanger, to think twice before burning their cane as this is undoubtedly causing heartaches for all of us, the ratepayers of this town. Be considerate to others. They also have a life. I appeal to the relevant authorities, like the Natal Cane Growers Association to take up this issue as a matter of urgency and bring about a law that prohibits the burning of cane. A heavy fine should be imposed on offenders. Its now cane reaping time, the problem will continue unabated, if not nipped in the bud. Come on cane growers, have a heart. Be considerate. Som Mudaly

The task team, established in conjunction with the national government, was set up after 22 people died after an out-ofcontrol truck smashed into four taxis and several cars last Thursday. Mchunu said he welcomed the decision by the National Prosecuting Authority to charge the driver of the truck with murder instead of culpable homicide. New Delhi gang rape suspects found guilty (Aljazeera) - An Indian court has found four men guilty of raping and killing a 23-year-old student in the capital, New D e l h i , l a s t D e c e m b e r. Sentences for the men, who face the possibility of death by

hanging, are expected to be handed down on Wednesday. J u d g e Yo g e s h K h a n n a announced on Tuesday: “I convict all of the accused. They have been found guilty of gang rape, unnatural offences, destruction of evidence.. and for committing the murder of the helpless victim.” At least three of the four men will appeal the guilty verdicts, their lawyers said.

Municipality addresses water stoppages Parts of KwaDukuza were without water from Friday, 6 September 2013. Below are the reasons cited by the iLembe District Municipality Municipal Manager Muzi Madlala: “The problem was caused by the power failure at Saunder Street, hence water could not be pumped to service the people of Stanger. The affected areas are, Warrenton, Lindelani, Shakaville, Stanger Heights, High Ridge, Indian Village, Stanger Manor, Doctorsskop, Townview and Glenhills and Stanger Manor. The KwaDukuza Technical team and Eskom were fixing the problem and it is envisaged that the problem will be resolved by tomorrow morning. As iLembe District Municipality we acknowledge the problem and understand the discomfort and inconvenience this has caused for residents. For further information contact our call centre on: 032 437 9379.” Ed's note: Power cuts and water shortages seem to becoming the norm now in this hi-tech day and age. I received at least 6 phone calls during the weekend and all reported that the call centre number just continues to ring and nobody answers the calls. An exercise in futility?

Insights from psychology can make us better (Scientific American Mind) When we pack our children off to school, we envision them embarking on a lifelong career of learning. Yet one thing they typically never study is the art of studying itself. Our intuitions, it turns out, do not always map to reality. In “Psychologists Identify the Best Ways to Study” by John Dunlosky et al. we comb through the vast scientific literature on learning techniques to identify the two methods that work best. Strong foundations can nurture exploration at all ages. Had it not been for an abiding love of learning, the 49-year-old Julia Child would not have published the cookbook that then launched her culinary career. Grandma Moses would not have taken up painting in her late 70s. And two octogenarians would not have spent 2013 vying to become the oldest climber to summit Everest. Whatever your quest, the science of learning can help you reach it.

Brilliant Vettel eases to victory in Italy Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel survived a number of small hiccups to take his sixth win of the season in the Formula 1 Gran Premio d'Italia 2013 at Monza on Sunday afternoon. The world champion took the lead at the start as Ferrari's Felipe Massa sprinted briefly up to second ahead of the second Red Bull of Mark Webber and the second Ferrari of Fernando Alonso. As Vettel extended his lead out front, despite some concerns about a flat-spotted tyre, Alonso fought past Webber with a courageous move on the third lap, then caught and passed his team mate on the eighth. Although there was nothing he could do about the German in the lead and though he finished only 5.4 seconds adrift, the real gap was closer to double that as Vettel eased off significantly. In the second half of the race Webber fought back and put Alonso under pressure until he was told to start short-shifting, but he was still less than a second behind the Ferrari at the end sandwiched with the second Ferrari where Massa was a distant fourth. Nico Hulkenberg and Mercedes' Nico Rosberg had a race-long fight for fifth which went the Sauber driver's way by six-tenths of a second even though Rosberg was the fastest man on track with three laps to go. Vettel's sixth win of the season extended his championship lead over Alonso. The German now has 222 points to the Spaniard's 169, while Hamilton is stuck back on 141 from Raikkonen on 134, as Webber moves up to 130. In the constructors' stakes, Red Bull had the biggest day and now has 352 points, while Ferrari's strong performance puts them back into second place on 248 ahead of Mercedes on 245. Lotus remains fourth on 191 with McLaren fifth on 66 and Force India sixth on 61.
