Project: Beautify Stanger Stanger High learners

KwaDukuza residents who wish to roll up their sleeves and get involved in beautifying the town may finally be able to do so. Recently, residents have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the state of the town. KwaDukuza resident, Ismail Gori has taken up the gadgels and found a solution and has come up with a simple project: Beautify Stanger. The concept is simple: donate R5 and volunteer to clean up the town. First assignment: Make the entrance to KwaDukuza appealing. Monies donated will go towards the purchase

of flowers and maintenance of the project. The project is gaining momentum with a host of Stangerites pledging their support and donations with the backing of KDM Deputy Mayor, Councillor Dolly Govender, who is known for being hands on. At a very productive briefing meeting held with community members in regards to the challenges that residents face daily, the project was outlined and turned out to be very successful. It was graced by the Deputy Mayor herself who offered guidance on how the project should unfold.

The project is good to go and members and volunteers will soon be moving spades and wheel barrows to get their hands dirty. One needs to bear in mind that the committee was formed just to assist and drive the project forward. The challenge is: Are we armchair critics or are we prepared to get our hands dirty to beautify our surroundings. Ismail Gori said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We all are one and are part of this vision, goal and objective, so be ready to roll.â&#x20AC;? Teaching and learning was disrupted at Stanger High School on Wednesday, 7 February 2018 as learners marched to the Department of Education District Office in KwaDukuza. It is alleged that learners staged the protest to express their dissatisfaction with the alleged dismissal of a foreign educator at the school.

Learners also protested at the school, and were soon joined by SADTU members who marched to the office of the Principal. SADTU members that were part of the protest refused to comment on the matter. However, the decision to remove an educator is made by the Department of Education, not the school principal. According to a Department

of Education circular, candidates for vacant school based educator posts must be considered in order of priority. Professionally qualified foreign educators are number 9 on the priority list. Principal of the school, Mr JB Singh has since retired. He has completed his retirement papers which is with the Department.

Parents of learners at Glenhills Primary School are frustrated that there hasn't been water at the school recently. Despite the situation, the school has remained open. Principal, Mr H Hurilall assured the Xpress Times that the situation is under control, saying that the pipes need to be renewed. “iLembe has been trying to resolve the issue,” he said. He also expressed his gratitude to iLembe officials for supplying water through water trucks. “iLembe has been very accommodating. Whenever I ask for water, they always deliver. As you can see, we are currently building a

I strongly believe this will help us overcome this water shortage issue. “We do not encourage our children to drink water from tanks, children usually bring their own water from home to school. Road users are fuming over the slow progress of road works on N2 north of Ballito. Motorists demand that SANRAL speed up the process as this road maintenance causes unnecessary traffic congestion. The reconstruction on this road was supposed to be completed by February 2016 but it was pushed back to February 2017. It was recently announced that the project might be completed later this year. SANRAL allegedly said that the slow progress is caused by â&#x20AC;&#x153;poor materialsâ&#x20AC;?. Many motorists have blasted SANRAL, calling it being irresponsible. When you drive on the N2, there's no signboard to apologize for the inconvenience. ANCYL protests at Maphumulo By Xpress Reporter

Members of the ANC Youth League in the Greater KwaDukuza Region staged a protest at Maphumulo Spar on Friday, 9 February 2018. This comes after they vowed to take action against management “as a last ditch

attempt to convince the arrogant and greedy bosses of this entity to attend to the outcries of the people.” Rubber bullets were fired by police to disperse the disgruntled crowd after they handed over a memorandum to Spar management.

The Youth League alleges that Maphumulo Spar has breached safety and hygiene regulations, and exploited employees. In a recent statement, the Youth League expressed its dissatisfaction with the management of Maphumulo Spar.

Amongst the issues that they want Spar management to address are the following: Provision of quality goods and service in a hygienic environment to customers, exploitation and casualization of workers, as well as the breaching of safety and h y g i e n e regulations. “We are making a call to Maphumulo Municipality to withdraw the store's t r a d i n g license. Forbidden fraud With Valentine's Day on the horizon a betrayed Romeo decided to try and win back the love of his life. However with a mind clouded by anger and emotion his method proved to be a serious crime. According to Mgabiselwa Njuwya, he and his friends were asleep when the door was broken down and two men entered armed with cane-knives, his friend Smitholile Zwayi was accused by one of the men of having an affair with his wife. The two men struck Zwayi on the head and arm then chopped Njeya on his arm. Security at the farm arrested Xolani Duma (55) and Lucky Gcuba (33). Both will seek bail this week.

It is alleged by Zama Mngoma that she overheard her neighbour speaking and referring to her on several occasions. World Day of Social Justice World Day of Social Justice recognises the need to promote efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion, employment, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all. The General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 20 February as World Day of Social Justice. The day was observed for the first time in 2009, when member states were invited to promote the objectives and goals of the World Summit for Social Development. As recognised by the World Summit, social development aims at social justice, solidarity, harmony and equality within and among countries. Social justice,

equality and equity constitute the fundamental values of all societies. To achieve “a society for all” governments made a commitment to the creation of a framework for action to promote social justice at national, regional and international levels. They also pledged to promote the equitable distribution of income and greater access to resources through equity and equality and opportunity for all. The governments recognised as well that economic growth should promote equity and social justice and that “a society for all” must be based on social justice and respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Combined youth meeting Jehovah Shalom Baptist Church in Glenhills will be hosting a combined youth meeting on Friday, February 16 commencing at 7pm. The combined youth meeting is not restricted to BASA (Baptist Association of South Africa) churches only, but church youth groups throughout KwaDukuza are encouraged to attend the meeting. The theme for Friday is love and youth are

encouraged to dress in red and black/white. Refreshments will be provided and no entry fee will be levied. On Friday, March 23 BASA youth will host a concert in the park in KwaDukuza and on April 27 a concert is planned to take place at the Livingstones Baptist Church in Richards Bay.
