Residents of the Newark area are still reeling in shock following the senseless killing of a 41-year-old man on 21 February 2018. It is alleged that Suresh Hardew was travelling with his son along the Nova's Farm turn-off when they were accosted by three unknown men. According to KZN SAPS Spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, Hardew sustained a gunshot wound on the shoulder and was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injury. “The motive for the attack is unknown. Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened at Newark police station for investigation. No arrest has been made at this stage,” said Mbhele.

Two arrested for police officer's murder By Xpress Reporter
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa has welcomed the arrest of two suspects who were involved in the shooting of Captain Dumisani Mhlanzi at KwaMaphumulo recently. Three firearms were recovered on the scene including the pistol belonging to Captain Mhlanzi. “We hope that the bold actions of these police officers will bring some closure to the family of Captain Mhlanzi. We are told that these men may be linked
to many robberies that were committed in KwaZuluNatal. I need to commend the multidisciplinary approach employed by police in KZN that is ensuring that criminals are brought to book. Various police units working together with other policing agencies outside the SAPS as well as in the private sector are ensuring that criminal syndicates are dismantled. We once again wish to remind criminals not to even think of shooting at

Maphumulo Voter Registration drive By Xpress Reporter
Last week Saturday Maphumulo Municipality held an event aiming to attract and educate Maphumulo residents especially the youth about the significance of voter registration, updating your voting registration details and why it is important to register to vote in your hometown. Maphumulo
MAYOR: Seen is Mayor Zibuyisile Khuzwayo-Dlamini addressing the crowd.
Municipality was thrilled by the turnout of people who attended the event. Mayor Zibuyisile Khuzwayo-Dlamini pleaded to all members of Maphumulo to come out in full-force and register to vote. “South Africa is now 24 years since the first democratic national elections in 1994. Although there is a lot that has changed, there is still much more to do
in changing the lives of our people, most especially community development in our deep rural areas of Maphumulo. Voting is your first step in ensuring that the government continues in changing people's lives, and those who are still behind in service delivery such as water and proper housing. I therefore call for all community members to register to vote and update
their addresses with the IEC”, said the Mayor. The Electoral Commission of South Africa was also part of the event to address the voters roll. Legendary Maskandi artist Mjikijelwa “Chalaha” Ngubane entertained the crowd with his hit songs, Majotha and other emerging artists from Maphumulo also got the crowd on their feet.

New Finance Minister hails from Kranskop
MINISTER: Seen is the recently appointed Minister of Finance Nhlanhla Musa Nene
By Xpress Reporter
Nhlanhla Musa Nene was appointed as the Minister of Finance on 27 February 2018 when President Cyril Ramaphosa made his first cabinet reshuffle. Nene was born and bred in Kranskop. His previous term as the Minister of Finance was from May 2014 until 9 December 2015, when he was dismissed by thenPresident Jacob Zuma, a move that saw an angry reaction in financial circles.
Nene, who is famously known as a family man, has had a remarkable career. As a new Member of Parliament, Nene served on the finance committee, which Barbara Hogan chaired between 1999 and 2004. Nene held the Chair of the Joint Budget Committee and is currently a member of the ANC Regional Executive Committee for the Bambatha region. In 2010 he was director of 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee, he also served as
Deputy Minister for Finance from 2009-2014. He has a B.Com honours in Economics and an Advanced Diploma from the University of the Western Cape. He also has a UNISA qualification in Economic Policy. He did not end there, he went to the United Kingdom to further his studies at the University of London where he attained a certificate in Macro and Micro Economics. Nene is a firm believer that all workers must fight for their rights. Whilst working at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1990, Nene is credited with leading the first ever strike in our financial sector. He campaigned for better workers' rights, and fought for five years under the banner of SACAWU. His dismissal in December 2015 left the economy of the country bleeding. The JSE got slaughtered against international markets the day after his removal as Minister of Finance. The Rand value dropped miserably. Recent reports state that Nhlanhla Nene tried to resist his current position but President Ramaphosa wasn't taking 'NO' for an answer. “I tried to resist a little‚ but I knew. He had made up his

mind‚” Nene said. Nene is also a successful business man, after being fired by former President Zuma, Nene enjoyed a comfortable
life in the private sector. EFF who were among those who welcome the appointment of Nene said “Nevertheless, we welcome
changes in finance; the appointment of Nhlanhla Nene is a reaffirmation of confidence in black and African leadership.”

COMMITTED: Ann Vinnzijl says she is on a mission to clean up KwaDukuza
By Xpress Reporter
70-year-old Ann Vinnzijl is on a mission to make KwaDukuza a better place. Motorists travelling along the R74 have noticed the elderly woman near the traffic lights, cutting grass
using a pair of scissors. She says that she has been trying to tidy up the bushes for almost a month now, and is in need of more efficient gardening tools. “I have made my life's mission to clean this road. I
do not expect any sort of payment, all I need is the right tool I can use to do the work,” said Vinnzijl. She appeals to citizens to supply her with gardening tools to help her work more efficiently.

Bridge finally reopened
HALL: The Shayamoya Community Hall worth R3, 9 million
BRIDGE: Seen is the newly built bridge that was recently reopened by KDM
By Xpress Reporter
Residents at the Stanger Heights area are thrilled as the reconstruction of the bridge leading to the testing ground has finally been complete. KwaDukuza Municipality officially handed over the bridge to KwaDukuza residents. The bridge in Ward 16 was reopened last week after
nearly 14 months of construction. KDM spent a little over R4 million on the project. The “Bird Park Bridge” was demolished after it had claimed two lives during floods two years back. Speaking at the opening ceremony, KwaDukuza Chief whip DW Ndimande acknowledged that they experienced delays due to some challenges.
“As a Municipality we pride ourselves in serving people we were elected to serve. This newly built bridge serves as proof that we are committed in serving the community. We are hopeful that this bridge will come in handy to the residents of this area especially during rainy seasons,” said Ndimande. The new look structure is a three span concrete bridge.
Ndimande mentioned that they had to raise the existing road at the end of the bridge by 0, 5 meters. Residents and construction workers welcomed the opening of the bridge as they came out in numbers to witness the launch. Shayamoya residents were also thrilled as KDM officially handed over the Shayamoya Community Hall
worth R3,9 million. KwaDukuza Chief Whip D W N d i m a n d e congratulated the Shayamoya residents on the new hall and pleaded with them to take care of it, as the Municipality has experienced vandalism of infrastructure. “I congratulate you all for being beneficiaries of the Hall. I urge all of you to treat
it as your home. The hall is available to anyone who wants to use it at a very low price but prices differ depending on the type of function you have,” stated Ndimande. This mega hall has a capacity of 500 people, it's equipped with a kitchen, toilets, and a stage that is accessible to disabled people.

Press court in connection with the incident. He will seek bail this week.
Tables turned There was a shocked and somewhat surprised audience at court when a local security officer appeared in court on a charge of shoplifting, According to evidence it is alleged that the officer picked up a Mitchell roll on deodorant valued at R61, 99 in CheckMart Supermarket and placed it in his pocket. He was followed by security and apprehended when he was about to depart from the store. He admitted his wrongdoing claiming he needed to buy bread for his children. Dane Jermaine Peter (27) pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a fine of R1 000 or 2 months imprisonment. He can never be employed in the security industry again.
Whose right who's wrong A Shakaville youth appeared in court on a charge of attempted murder. Thulani Mthembu alleges that he was walking on the side of the road when he was approached by a vehicle and an argument broke out over the place where he was walking. He then walked on the pavement and the mirror caught him on the shoulder, words were exchanged and he walked off, only to be knocked by the vehicle. When the occupants of the vehicle alighted, he fled. The driver gives a totally different version of the event. Hleza Ntandazo (26) is due back at court on the 4th of May in connection with the incident.

THANKS ALOT MAMA ALISHA I am Salashnee from Shakaville Stanger. I’m here to thank Mama Alisha for helping me sell my property at a reasonable price. I was a proud Mother of 3 kids and was happily married. But my life turned upside down in 2014 when I lost all my 3 kids and their father in a road accident. I survived because I was at work that day. Since then I have panic attacks, My families memories were killing me and I decided to sell the house in 2015. Many people used to call come see the house but they don’t come back up to when I went to MAMA ALISHA after reading about her in the newspaper. She came to the house , blessed it and told me she will do the rest at her place of work. I was surprised when just in two weeks a buyer was found and I was given a reasonable amount of money. Dear Editor The question of overtime in KwaDukuza Municipality has to be resolved as soon as “yesterday”. On Sunday early evening, I went to find out how soon can we have power back after almost one hour of heavy wind. The staff reminded me that “due to introduction of the shift system”, our electricians and their assistants have boycotted working after 16H15 due to dispute on overtime and introduction of shifts. Our Municipality like national government is facing serious deficits created by economy and mismanagement. At both tiers reserves have been wiped off. At a national level, we face over R32 billion rands shortfalls hence hike in VAT. It is now common knowledge that tax immorality, Tom Moyane himself, corruption and economic downgrades contribute to the shortfalls. Our Municipality is facing R38m shortfall. Our reserves have been wiped off. Between 1996 and 2007 we worked hard to create reserves. At a national level, when we took over, there was huge deficit. We correctly and wisely

XPress introduced GEAR led by Nelson Mandela. We refused to go to IMF and World Bank to borrow, a big mistake made by ZANU PF in Zimbabwe. With SACP and COSATU participating fully in Mahikeng and Stellenbosch conferences we explained GEAR. Our “ideologically confused Left” did not provide us with alternatives but decided to go out mobilizing ignorant working class against GEAR which shop-stewards did not understand. Cde Jacob “Bathingenzeni” Zuma also joined the chorus “asiyifuni iGEAR, we do not want GEAR”. In his 10 year misgovernance characterizing by looting, State Capture and liquidation of SARS, SOEs, Telkom, Treasury, Public Protector, SAPS, SSA, SABC and Batho Pele we now have an economic crisis. KwaDukuza Municipality has joined ILembe District Council which was a “milking cow” and Mayor Sduduzo Gumede is battling to correct its ills of more than 15 years. A security person who bodyguard Mayor/Cllr Ricardo Mthembu made over R70 000 overtime. Why do we expect electricians to accept shifts when such things happen. A staff member in the Housing Section is receiving R9 000 bribes from sand-mining family mining on land belonging to United Congregational Church. Some in SADTU have been selling posts and report has been shelved because SADTU became “driver” of CR17 campaign. Workers see leaders driving cars above their incomes and living free of charge in the house in Port Zimbali belonging to a service provider. They see children of Cde “Bathingenzeni” Zuma, Guptas, Vivian Reddy, Roy Moodley, tenderpreneurs and musicians making millions. Workers know that even here in KwaDukuza Section 36 is being used to enrich those connected. They know certain artists are making millions every December in KwaDukuza but we have potholes, Groutville is filthy, footpath used by learners between Groutville clinic and Etete has one metre tall grass forcing them and pedestrians to walk on the road. The crisis on overtime and shifts is now affecting all of us. We are being blackmailed because electricians see overtime as their “sugar-daddy” in the same way leaders manipulate Section 36 and bodyguards getting exorbitantly on overtime. Two wrongs have not made a “correct”. Electricity is an essential service and leaders of our municipality and electricians are now aware that it is mainly African areas affected by these shenanigans which have nothing to do with
Batho Pele but selfishness. Siyanda Mhlongo KwaDukuza
An open plea to the Mayor Please assess this issue of road closures every few days. It's illegal for anyone to close of any road, without a valid reason. This is affecting the economy of Stanger, people are losing jobs, losing hours of pay, vehicles being damaged, infrastructure of state and municipality being vandalised. Companies are also refusing to deliver services or goods because of road closures and fear of goods being stolen or looted. This closures also effect the transport network system of flights, as pilots and essential workers can't be at work on time, or not at all. What about police officers who can't go to work, or even security companies staff - How will SAPS show up for accidents and crime if these protesters are blockading roads illegally. Let me tell you something, I've travelled the world, almost every country has the public order army soldiers, working side by side with the police. Both work in their own spaces, and guess what? We can work, shop or leisure at peace. Ardent taxpayer cc. Office of the National Police Commissioner
Soccer and terrorism Is it not about time that all countries boycotted the soccer world cup to be held in Russia. Russia on behalf of the Syrian dictator has relentlessly bombed civilians, hospitals and schools and prevented aid from reaching the besieged and bombed civilians in Syria. Russia has engaged in state terrorism, nothing short of genocide against innocent civilians including women and children. It is against all values of human decency, dignity and justice to reward Russia with the right to host the world cup. Maybe we can set aside our desire for entertainment and pursue a nobler and higher cause. Ashraf Mather

Warriors victorious once again
In a T20 match played at the Gledhow Grounds on Sunday morning, 11 March, Warriors Sport went up against Manor B. Warriors Sport won the toss and elected to bat first, despite the outfield being covered in dew which would have made the ball heavier. Warriors had a good start with a run rate of 7 in the first five overs, capitalizing on the power play. The Manor outfit thereafter tightened the attack somewhat restricting the runs. But it was man of the match, Ash Balchand's scintillating
63 which included 4 fours and a six that stole the show. He was supported by Martin Naicker (11), skipper Riaz Mahomed (14) and Rishen Mathapershad (10).Warriors ended their innings on 122/5. Azhar Ansur was the pick of the Manor bowlers claiming 15/2. Manor got off to a rocky start with a slow run rate and lost wickets at regular intervals. However, in the 10th over with the score on 47/5, Junaid Amra stepped in and managed to steady the ship with his 32 not out which included 3
fours. Manor ended their innings total on 103/6. Amin Gallu claimed 11/2 from 3 overs and Pravin Ramgareeb 16/2 from his 4 overs, whilst skipper and wicket keeper, Riaz stumped 2.Warriors won by 19 runs. In other matches played, a rampant Pak International thrashed Flipside B by 46 runs. Adnan Ali top scored with 44, supported by Anjam Mohamed 31, Tauqeer Malik 30 and Mohammed Azam 21, with Adnan being the destroyer-in-chief claiming 3 wickets.
Team Flipside victorious
In a late Sunday afternoon iLembe and District Cricket Union T20 match that was played place at the Gledhow Cricket Grounds, Flipside-A took on Magnum in a reduced (15over) A-league encounter. Flipside won the toss and without hesitation chose to bat, which seemingly backfired, as they lost 3 quick wickets with the score on 24. Opener, P. Govender was then joined by man of the match, P. Naidoo (Bush) who showed no respect to the bowlers, smashing a brilliant 57 (7x4's and 1x6). He was well supported by P. Govender (21) and P. Dhaver (20) seeing the team to 136 in
the allotted overs. In reply, Magnum finished with 80 for 9 in their allotted overs, K. Padayachee was the only batsman to offer resistance scoring 33. The pick of the Flipside bowlers were S. Pillay and P. Govender who claimed 3 wickets apiece and N. Pancham claiming 2. Manager of Flipside said that he was proud of the boys and attributed their victory to an all-round team performance.
BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE The vagaries of the sporting world are, at most times, inexplicable. Last week, AB de Villiers was regarded as a loser, especially in the manner in which he was run out at a crucial stage of the game. A week later, and he plays an innings that has put the Proteas in the driving seat to draw level 1-1 in the series. While the other batsmen found the conditions difficult to navigate, de Villiers seemed to be batting on another wicket and smote a scintillating undefeated century. He was wellsupported by the lower order comprising Vernon Philander and Keshav Maharaj. According to the commentators this was one of the best of his 22 centuries and his first in 3 years. He played his full array of shots and reached his century with an innovative stroke over the slips to a short ball - ala Tendulkar. He proved that he was a superb batsman in all conditions. Now all that is left is for the South Africans to dismiss the Aussies cheaply and knock off the runs. But that is easier said than done. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins can be very dangerous with the old ball that begins to reverse after about 40 overs. For that to happen, Australia must have a lead of 150 runs and over to give their match-winners an opportunity. An interesting finish is on the cards. Our neighbour, Zimbabwe, is presently hosting the Qualifying Tournament to determine two places for next year's World Cup in England and Wales. Three times champion, the
West Indies, are involved as they are ranked 9th with only the top 8 teams qualifying automatically. Other test teams trying to qualify are Zimbabwe, Ireland and Afghanistan with the WI and Zimbabwe favourites. But in such tournaments upsets are possible and the lesser countries cannot be written off. Sunday evening was ecstatic for some and sheer misery for others. All were attired in red tops but with different logos. Some had discarded theirs as part of the disappointment at their team having lost while the others donned theirs for the rest of the night, some may even have slept in their shirts! Such is the passion displayed when perennial rivals, Liverpool and Manchester United, meet at least twice a year. This time round it was bragging rights for the Red Devils who, through the courtesy of 2 Marcus Rashford goals, emerged victorious. There were incidents galore which made for riveting viewing. Two Stangerites, Bala Tolsi and his son, well-known journalist, Niren, had the pleasure of being present at Old Trafford to witness a win for their beloved United. It would have made their trip so worthwhile after the visa problems they experienced. Now for Tuesday when United meets Sevilla in the secondleg of the Champions League at home. The SASCOC enquiries have begun and the skeletons in the cupboard are beginning to emerge. Some of the revelations are mind-boggling and
corrupt practices abound. The Commissioners are having a field day questioning Tubby Reddy (CEO) and Vinesh Maharaj (CFO) and some of their replies defy logic. The saga continues. The SA 7's team, the Blitzbokke, won the bronze medal in Vancouver over the weekend after they were defeated in the semi-final by eventual winners Fiji. However, they still head the log by 8 points followed by Fiji and New Zealand. The last word. The first test between SA and Australia will be remembered more for all the controversies rather than the actual result. It all began on the field through excessive sledging by the Australians, mainly David Warner and Mitchell Starc, who harangued Quinton de Kock and Theunis de Bruyn respectively. Thereafter, it boiled over in the tunnel leading to the players' dressing rooms. de Kock is alleged to have said something personal to Warner which raised his ire and had to be restrained by his team mates. The question that arises is how far should this "sledging" be allowed to proceed before the umpires, who are custodians of the game on the field of play, intervene and put a stop to it before it turns ugly. Thus far, the umpires have been lax and the match referee has had to speak to the managers and captains to ensure that the decorum that is associated with the game is maintained. After all, it's called the "gentlemen's game”! A call is made to all those playing the game

at the highest level to do so competitively and in the b e s t s p i r i t o f sportsmanship. Perhaps, everyone should take a leaf from the book of the great WI sides of the 70s and 80s who employed "the stare" rather than words to show their feelings. Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.

In the true meaning of community interest, Xpress Times has once again proving that it is a community tabloid that gives back to the community. In a long running relationship with KeaDukuza Volleyball Association, CEO of Xpress Times, Ahmed Desai has once again agreed to sponsor the annual Easter Volleyball tournament which is scheduled for kick off next Thursday, 22 March 2018 and the final is expected on 12 April 2018 where the usual carnival atmosphere will prevail. The tournament will be hosted by KwaDukuza Volleyball Association. Darnall United will start as favourites to lift the Xpress T i m e s E a s t e r t r o p h y.
However, a lot has changed in the 2018 season with some new clubs joining the fold and others seeking greener pastures in other associations. Grove End are the current holders of the Cup. The tournament will be contested by Darnall United, Frendz, Cool Leaders, Manor Old Boys and Glenhills Sporting drawn in Pool A whilst newcomers Strichcode All Blacks and TV Gate and Boyz taking on Sunbrook and Frendz. Cool Leaders will kick off the tournament when they play Darnall whilst MOB play Glenhills whilst newcomers All Blacks taking on TV&GB and old foes Sunbrook playing Frendz. Revy Harryprasadh,
Anil Singh, Sports Reporter for Xpress Times hands over the Xpress Times Easter Tournament to Revy Harryprasadh, tournament director of KDVA
tournament director of KDVA, profusely thanked Ahmed Desai for his continued sponsorship over the years and his keen interest in the upliftment of volleyball in KwaDukuza. It will be historic because it will be the first official game played at the new venue at Stanger High. All games will be played on a round robin basis in the pool section with the top two teams advancing to a cross over semi-finals. The winner will walk away with a cool R1000 and trophies with the runner up pocketing R500 and trophies with third place receiving R400. At the end of the tournament, clubs wishing to join the after party braai are requested to pay R200 that will ensure your club receives braai packs. This is scheduled for 12 April 2018.
Marshmallow gain experience The U11 and U13 made their soccer adventure into Durban last Sunday. The enthusiasm showed as the team was all geared up and ready to leave by 06:30. Marshmallows took on the giants of Durban at the Hartley Road Primary School. They went up against Juventus, Ashtown and Hartley in friendly encounters and thoroughly gained experience and exposure leaving Durban knowing what city football tastes like. Those wishing to join the club can contact Ismail Gori on 0724435910. Marshmallows U11 and U13 teams
