earners rush to gather around the solitary Jojo tank in the middle of the school's court yard, each desperate to get some water down their patched throats. Some learners pause briefly to explain to our news team that the same Jojo tank also supplies water to the lavatories. Overall, the situation looks pretty dim, with the school authorities mulling over the idea of shutting down the school completely. This is Stanger Heights Primary School, a quintile five school that caters predominantly for learners from indigent families. The future of the school looks bleak since iLembe District municipality decided to cut off water supply to the school. Apparently, the school owes the municipality about R96 000 in outstanding water debt. According to a member of the school management team, who

“Water disconnections within (municipality’s) policy”
Continued from page 1 spoke to our reporters anonymously, the school was initially owing close to R200 000. So far the school has managed to pay about 98 000, but iLembe remains unconvinced. The school still owes a staggering R96 000, hence the move to disconnect water supply. The school receives a paltry grant annual grant of R66 000 from the Department of Education. Angry protestors condemn Glenhills demolitions motion in court to oppose he earlier ruling. This matter will be heard on the 25th of October 2016. Many incensed residents have accused the protestors of failing to respect the rights of those who wanted to go to work, while some have raised concerns about the use of burning tyres in order to raise grievances. Meanwhile, former
Minority Front (MF) Councillor Bikrum Singh has accused the municipality of acting “inhumanely”. Singh said, who spent an hour engaging the protestors on Thursday, said demolishing poor people's houses on the basis of implementing some court order did not make any sense, and was symptomatic of a government that was “out of touch” with reality on
the ground. Ward 13 Councillor Rabi Singh said every effort was being made to find an amicable resolution to this matter. He said, to this end, a meeting would be convened on Wednesday (today), at the Glenhills Multi-Purpose Centre, starting at 15:00. KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu will be part of the meeting.
Fun Run held to raise awareness STANDSTILL: The entire area of Glenhills came to a standstill on Thursday last week as residents protested over planned demolition of houses
By Xpress Reporter
The situation remains tense in Glenhills and surrounding areas, following a protest action last week Thursday which saw a group of angry residents blocking all roads leading to and from the area. This was done in protest over plans by KwaDukuza Municipality to demolish houses built on land that is owned by the municipality. The protest was sparked by the municipality's decision to start implementing the terms
of a High Court ruling, which gave the municipality permission to demolish all partially built and unoccupied structures on the said land, which was sold to residents illegally by three well known members of the community. This followed a move by the municipality to expropriate this land for the purposes of building RDP houses. Va r i o u s e l e c t e d a n d unelected leaders have visited the area if address the residents, and to allay fears
that fully built and occupied houses had also been earmarked for demolition. The demolition campaign started on Monday last week, whereby the municipality tore down a structure that was described as “cottages” that were intended for rental income. Further demolition operations have been put on hold while the municipality tries to quell rising tensions in the area. 12 of the people whose houses are amongst those earmarked for demolition have filed a

Rapid response pays off Police reacting to a complaint by a Melville resident proved that a rapid response pays dividends. The victim of an assault by a group of youths led police to one of the group who had attacked the victim. The man was searched and a .38 special revolver with serial numbers filed off was found in his possession. Luyanda Siyangaphi (18), a scholar, was remanded in custody pending a bail consideration. Beyond reason Three persons appeared in court on a charge of murder. Their arrests follow the death of Mduduzi Msweli on 30 June 2016. According to an eye-witness, the deceased, a conductor, drove a taxi into a vehicle. The occupants of the damaged vehicle chased him and caught him in a nearby bush. They began assaulting him for a period of time until the witness intervened and took him to his home. His son who came to visit him the following day alerted relatives that Msweli had died. The post-mortem results show that he died of punctured lungs and brain damage. Thabiso Mghobozi (32), Bongani Cele (35) and a 17year-old youth are due back at court on 11 October in connection with the incident. Tata Ma Chance Nkosinathi Shange of Shakaville alleges he was walking to work at 5am when he was approached by a man with a firearm. The man demanded money and a cellphone and began to assault Shange who retaliated
and tackled his assailant. Both men began shouting for help which drew the attention of passersby and taxi drivers on their way to work. The culprit was severely beaten and was rescued by security officials from probably being killed by the mob. Vezumusa Gaza (32) is presumably under guard at hospital and will appear in court on his discharge.
caused to peoples' lives because of alcohol misuse is alarming. In the latest incident, Sifiso Ntusi was killed as a result of alcohol. It is alleged that he had met another tavern drinker at 2am on Sunday. He asked the man, Mfunolo Mkhize, to accompany him to a house of a person whom he wished to settle a difference with. Mkhize accompanied the man who went to the wrong house and awoke the occupants. The house of the person he sought was pointed out to him and Mkhize alleges the man kicked the door twice. On the second occasion the door opened and he went into the house. He noticed the occupant fleeing with a knife in his hand. The local ward councilor intervened when the community became angered by the incident and had both Mkhize and the occupant of the house taken to the police station. Nhlakanipho Cele (26) has been charged for murder and will seek bail this week.

Massive economic boost for North Coast By Xpress Reporter
The Minister of Trade and Industry (DTI), Dr Rob Davies together with the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala launched the massive program called Isithebe Revitalized Industrial Park Program at Mandeni on Tuesday the 4th of October 2016. On his opening welcome note the Mayor of Mandeni Cllr Sphesihle Basil Zulu welcomed the guests, and said, “We are the new Council that was elected on the 3rd of August 2016. We are very strong and energetic. I will be failing my duty if I don't mention the fact that, the previous Council achieved a lot as far as service delivery is concerned. Among other things they attained two Clean Audit awards including the Best Rural Housing Project award (Govan Mbeki awards)”. Mayor Zulu also alluded to the fact that government cannot win the battle in an environment with triple challenges alone as the local leadership but they also need other stakeholders to play a pivotal role in this regard.
Pictured (L to R) is the Mandeni Mayor Cllr Siphesihle Basil Zulu, MEC for COGTA Nomusa Dube-Ncube, Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Rob Davies, MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Sihle Zikalala, iLembe Deputy Mayor Cllr Dolly Shandu, and Chairman of iThala Group Dr Mandla Gantsho
He further blew a whistle to the Government and other stakeholders to influence the curriculum for TVET colleges in
Mandeni, adding that relevant skills training needs to be offered in these colleges. “I would also like to thank all stakeholders for the continued support they offer especially the community itself, we all need to strive to preserve the 25 000 jobs that are being offered at Isithebe industrial park for the benefit of Mandeni inhabitants and Have you been seriously injured in a motor for investor attraction purposes” said the Mayor. vehicle accident or the victim of possible In his address the MEC for medical negligence? but shows that as Government we are serious about investment attraction to the province”. Furthermore, the MEC said he wish to thank the Department of Trade and Industry which has made a huge investment to change the face of one of the biggest industrial parks in the province which is one of the critical business hubs of the province of KZN. “The fact that the industrial park is strategically situated in one of the critical corridors between Durban and Richards Bay, further testifies to the importance of this industrial park to the economy of the province,” said the MEC. established as an industrial growth point some forty five years ago to stimulate development in the Mandeni and Sundumbili region. In addition he stated that to date Isithebe can be considered as a successful Industrial Estate given the high occupation rates, low turnover, the mix of industrial activity and the number of people employed some (25 000) within the area. Dr Gantsho also mentioned the fact that women and the disabled were also catered for during the 1st phase of the revitalization program, fifteen SMME's were appointed as sub-contractors at over 6 million. “Today the Estate occupies some 414 hectares with 165 factories owned by Ithala and 49 factories owned privately, the main tenants includes Whirlpool South Africa, Taurus (paper packaging, Gomma-Gomma (furnisher), Nampak ( paper packaging), Raffia Turffbag (bulk bags), Metso Minerals ( foundry) and other several textile firms including Knitwear” he said. On the contrary the Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Rob Davies said South Africa is experiencing the tough situation with the global economy downgrading and urged people to support industrialization. “We should be able to manufacture a product, market it, and be able to meet the needs of the investors as it happens in the Chinese economy, having 25 000 people employed here at Isithebe enables us to generate the investor trust” the Minister said. In her closing remarks the iLembe Deputy Mayor Cllr Dolly Shandu said within Mandeni Isithebe is one of the major employers as it employs half of the Mandeni population. “It is our gold mine, it puts Mandeni on the Map, we therefore appreciates to see more partnerships in the region I am also glad that iLembe has been identified as the renewable energy hub,” said the Deputy Mayor.

Come celebrate Diwali with us Raising Breast Cancer awareness By Xpress Reporter
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed globally every October. The aim of this campaign is to increase awareness of this disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries. The incidence of Breast Cancer among South African women is increasing. This campaign is also an opportunity to provide information and support to those who are affected by breast cancer and to remind women to be aware for early
detection. Fortunately, if it is detected and treated early, there is an excellent chance of recovery and survival. It is therefore essential for every woman to conduct a Breast Self Examination (BSE) monthly, from the age of 20 and have a routine screening mammogram (a special x-ray to detect abnormalities in the breast) annually, from the age 40 and earlier if you have any concerns or a family history of Breast Cancer. If you have any of the following symptoms, visit a health professional: • lumps (Many breast lumps are harmless, but they all must be checked) • unusual swellings • difference in size of

In recent years, despite all the colourful celebration, it has also taken new focus trying to address the socials ills and poverty that have reached

Local musicians empowered with music business skills By Xpress Reporter
Awesome Africa International Arts Festival has partnered with iLembe District Municipality and Onexus Music Business Solutions to offer musicians in the iLembe region a twoweek music business programme, primarily funded by the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) under their Arts, Culture and Heritage. This first week of these workshops took place on 19, 20 and 21 September. 80 musicians from throughout iLembe District gathered at the Luthuli Museum in Groutville, eager to learn more about the music business. Topics such as setting goals, contracts and agreements, social media and the performance industry were discussed. Aside from
the facilitators from Onexus, guests such as artists Mbuso Khoza, Qadasi and Maqhinga and studio owner Malcolm Nhleko were invited to give the musicians their best tips and advice. “Having received my first record deal at the age of 18, during my last year of school, I had almost no knowledge of the music industry and the struggles, and work involved in 'making it'. This was a new adventure and my first couple of years was spent learning the ropes and grasping a basic understanding of music business, especially with regards to financial implications, tax requirements, and the various laws pertaining to the industry. After five years as a professional musician, I have learnt a great deal and continue to learn every day.
EMPOWERED: Pictured are aspiring local musicians together with facilitators and guest artists
Ones understanding of 'music business' can either make or break a career.” Qadasi The program continued in
the week commencing from Monday 26 September and covered many more topics, such as copyrights and marketing. The programme
also include a panel discussion on indigenous music and the use of traditional instruments and songs with prominent guests
like maskandi artist Mbuso Khoza, musician Lu Dlamini and music producer Marius Botha. Music Producer Marius Botha said, “The future of our music industry lies in the traditional music genre. We must desist from copying Western music”. Maskandi artist Mbuso Khoza said it was embarrassing to see that tourists from European countries come to Africa with a view to experiencing new things, only to hear their own music dominating locally. “Whilst here is a lot that we can learn from our international counterparts, it remains fundamental for us to cherish that which belongs to us. Let's learn to take pride in being Africans,” Khoza said.

Transport Department fails KwaDukuza motorists By Xpress Reporter
Driving on the R74 (Manor Highway) just outside Stanger Secondary School, has become a serious peril for motorists, this is accused by a dangerous ditch that has remained in place for years now, with no attempt by the Provincial Department of Transport to attend to the problem. Motorists complain that
their vehicles get damaged if they hit the ditch, while trying to avoid the ditch constitutes gross dangerous driving, and could lead to a serious accident. At the time of going to press this week, KwaZuluNatal Department of Transport had not responded to queries from Xpress Times.

Illegal tenants in old aged homes Your article: “Outrage Over Lot 14 Demolitions”, has reference. Whilst the one department is doing its job what is the Housing Department doing about illegal tenants occupying the RA Moodley and Ridyat Road Old Aged Homes? At the RA Moodley Old Aged Homes tenants have relatives, friends and tenants living with them whilst at the Radiyat Road Old Aged Homes a sister is living with her sister, a son is living with his mother and a daughter is living with her mother. Is the Housing Department aware or turning a blind eye? Concerned KwaDukuza
We The People! Once reporting on the happenings in KwaDukuza Municipality's Council Chamber as a journalist, to now being a DA PR Councillor in KDM, allows one a unique insight but with the same ideal - serving the public interest. Five years a certified Journo from the ground up to leeching off experience from local media groups, to now transitioning to being involved in municipal affairs. To those who may not know, I am no journalist anymore... whatsoever! After attending SALGA Councillor training for a week, Vallan brought to my attention the way in which I, as a journalist, used to treat councillors via the written word - Karma awaits me. To "The Times" reporter Nivashni Nair Sukdhev, I am not an embedded investigative journalist posing as a Councillor nor was I "an ally" as the "Mail and Guardian" put while I was still a
reporter. If there was a dual or hybrid role of as a Councillor with journalistic anxiety or a reporter with a Councillor psychosis, it would be dystopia. To Yvette Pottier Dennis Puckeree and KwaDukuza citizenry, the DA councillors or the blue team are with you! If you live in Ward 19 and have anything to get off your chest or clear your mind, p l e a s e e m a i l : vernonhitman@gmail.com Cllr Vernon Pillay Democratic Alliance KwaDukuza Municipality

MAMA ALISHA
2016 THE BEST YEAR OF MY LIFE- ALL THANKS TO MAMA ALISHA I am Mr Vijay Tinnet from Stanger Manor. I was a security guard for 15 years but had nothing to show as my salary too was small. I had fear to marry becuase I had fear that I couldn’t support a big family. One day I was chatting with Jan Corbus my previous work mate who had become rich so fast and he told me to go to Mama Alisha because she had helped him to get rich. He called her and told her he was sending me to her. The next day I went, she started with a prayer, then she told me to use a magic wallet. I took the magic wallet home, after only 3 days she had told me I woke up checked the wallet and here was a lot of money. I went back to her she said it will bring more. I bought myself a brand new range rover & A home in Umhlanga and also got married. I opened my own business thanks too Mama Alisha
MY WIFE TOLD ME TO GO TO HELL WHEN I WAS POOR BUT SHE WANTS ME BACK BECAUSE IM RICH I am Cliff from Umhlanga. I came to know about Mama Alisha from Auntie Merina who lives in Stanger and had previously visited her with a financial problem and it had been fixed. I had lost all my money, cars, business some of which was left to me by my late parents. When things went real bad. My wife told me to go to hell and started having affairs looking out for rich men and when I confronted her about it she told me go to hell, left me alone and went. I suffered for almost 2 years but meeting Mama Alisha rose me up again. She gave me a magic wallet with which I could get money daily inside my house. I opened up a new business worth 2 million rands bought 2 new cars and when my wife heard that I am up again she wants me back, thinking of forgiving her but am not sure. Only that she is the mother of my 3 kids. I can forgive her for only that. If Alisha bought my life back to normal, I know she can help you too.

Observing World Arthritis Day By Xpress Reporter
World Arthritis Day was established in 1996 by Arthritis and Rheumatism International (ARI) and is celebrated each year on 12 October. People with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) from around the world can join together to make their voices heard on this day. Although 12 October is the official World Arthritis Day, this is a year round campaign. Throughout the world millions of people are affected by arthritis, their lives being changed by the sometimes constant pain of inflamed joints. World Arthritis Day is a day to remember and raise awareness of this condition, and how it affects the lives of those that suffer with it.
If you have relatives who suffer from it, take a day to go over and help them out with the things that are made difficult for them because of their condition. Take some time to do some research and get a clear understanding of how people have their lives affected by Arthritis. The aims of WorldArthritis Day are to: • raise awareness of RMDs amongst the medical community, people with RMDs and the general public • influence public policy by making decision-makers aware of the burden of RMDs and the steps which can be taken to ease it • ensure all people with RMDs and their caregivers are aware of the vast support network available to them.

Cool Leaders through to Moon & Sons final
Cool Leaders are through to the Moon & Sons sponsored K w a D u k u z a Vo l l e y b a l l Association Division I knock out cup final after a winning a one sided semi-final against Frendz last Thursday at the association courts. It was sheer dominance on the part of Cool Leaders with a good all round performance from the team. Cooks Moodley, with his deft touches and breath-taking cover, Robin Naidoo with his thunderous attacks and Raj Nalliah with his brilliant setting were the stand-out players for Cool Leaders keeping Frendz in abeyance for most of the match. Cool Leaders stamped their authority from the start and raced to a convincing 25-12 win. They continued their dominance at the start of the second set taking a commanding 10-4 lead forcing Frendz into an
early time-out. With their strong support base behind them and with the introduction of the lanky Nazir Khan, Frendz slowly clawed their way back into the game through Khan and Dees Bhowanik to reduce the deficit to just two points trailing 12-14 forcing Cool Leaders into a time out. This gave Cool Leaders a little breather and with some inspirational words from skipper Moodley, Cool Leaders gained their 5 point advantage leading 19-14. Frendz quickly summoned their second time-out but this did little to damper the spirits in the Cool Leaders camp as they quickly raced for a comfortable 25-17 victory and booked their place in the final. Cool Leaders will now face the giants of Division I, Darnall United who remain undefeated
for 2016. Darnall beat the youthful Preston outfit in straight sets to advance into the final. The final should produce fireworks but on sheer form, Darnall are favourites to clinch the title. However, Cool Leaders are known to cause major upsets and cannot be ruled out. Frendz and Preston will battle for a podium finish.
