Matriculants excel despite bad results By Xpress Reporters

T

he Class of 2015 featured learners that stood out with distinctions and University passes in the least but Ilembe District matriculants overall only achieved a pass rate of just over 50 percent. The media briefing held on Wednesday which saw the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premier, Senzo Mchunu (himself former MEC for Education), current MEC, Peggy Nkonyeni and KZN Education: Head of Department, Dr Nkosinathi Sishi highlighted the seriousness of Ilembe's problems. However, learners from

KwaDukuza and Mandeni made up the prestigious “Ilembe Top Five.” Stanger Manor Secondary learners, year on year, have featured the most in the illustrious list when looked at in terms of Top Ten. This year they featured in the Top Four. Ilembe's Top learner, Jisheel Kanaye who attained eight distinctions, will go on to study Medicine. He will take on Oncology as a specialization

later on. “Surround yourself with optimists, consistent hard work and support helped me,” said Kanaye. He advised the current

matriculants to do what works for them and to steer clear of over thinking and stressing. “I thank my parents for their support and I was very lucky to

have the educators I had,” he said. In second place was Desilan Govender, a Mandeni resident who had to travel to school in Manor Continued on page 4

He said he considered Dermatology as a specialization. “During my year gaining confidence minimized stress for me,” he said. Govender also put in three extra hours, almost every Saturday, during his matric year. He thanked

PROTEC Mandeni, his parents and friends for their support in his achievements. Joy Mkhwanazi, third in Ilembe, scored seven A's and will pursue Medicine at the University of Cape Town (UCT). “I have been working the whole year. Set aside time for leisure activities and friends, preferably doing something constructive,” said Kazi. He added that a good thing would be to set up a study timetable because people don't realise how much time is wasted on unnecessary activities. Sindiswa Khuzwayo, a Mandeni resident and learner from Udumo High, scored with seven A's and like her contemporaries she too is undertaking medicine.

EYESORE: Residents of Radiyat Road, Stanger Heights are up in arms over an illegal dumpsite in the area that is not only unsightly, but a health hazard as well. According to one of the residents, the dirt and rubble has been a recurring problem for almost a year. Speaking to the Xpress Times on Monday, Ward 16 Councillor, Andrew Gopaul said that he is aware of the situation, and will attend to the matter soon. “The people who I contacted to clear the area were on leave, and should be back at work today. The matter will be sorted out in a week,” he said. Businesses and individuals are urged to stop dumping in the area

Racism plunges SA back to Apartheid era

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF: Social media has allowed racism and hate speech to evolve rapidly as the 80's era cartoon above finds relevance in 2016

By Xpress Reporter

Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have seen people post unsavoury, dehumanizing and heinous discrimination statuses causing racial outbursts. It all started with a tweet by Penny Sparrow (see Xpress Times: 8/01/16) and then a professional named Chris Hart was on the receiving end of an immense backlash after he tweeted: “More than 25 years after Apartheid

ended, the victims are increasing along with a sense of entitlement and hatred towards minorities….[sic]” (Former) Idols judge Gareth Cliff also was adjudged to be very insensitive when he said on Twitter: “People really don't understand free speech at all. [Sic]” Mnet axed the controversial former Deejay. Then a government official, Velaphi Khumalo from the Gauteng Sports,

Arts, Culture and Recreation Department replied to Sparrow by saying the following: “I want to cleans this country of all white people. we must act as Hitler did to the Jews. I don't believe any more that the is a large number of not so racist whit people . I'm starting to be sceptical even of those within our Movement the ANC. I will from today unfriend all white people I have as friends from today u must be put under the same blanket as any other racist white because secretly u all are a bunch of racist f#$k heads. as we have already seen [all sic],” he wrote. Nicole de Klerk called Yamkela Ntola (a second year attorney) and his friends the k-word at the Queen's Plate horse racing event on Saturday. He laid charges of crimen injuria and to the Human Rights Commission. Last year, Phumlani Mfeka expressed “anti-Indian sentiments” towards “Indians” in KwaZulu-Natal, Penny Sparrow and Chris Hart followed with dehumanisation against “Black” people, Velaphi Khumalo in response to Sparrow, targeted “White” people and unintentionally offended the Jewish people. Nicole De Klerk also used the K-word… Who is next???

Sister act Lindiwe Mathenjwa of Melville was robbed of her cellphone late on New Years Eve. She was walking with two friends when their attacker placed a knife to her stomach and fled with her phone. Her two friends made an unsuccessful bid to catch the culprit. The following day the culprit offered the phone to her sister and the sister arranged for him to meet later when Lindiwe would be present to identify him. He did not show up and enquiries led to the identity and location of the culprit who was arrested and still had the phone in his possession. Lindani Mdletshe is expected in court soon to seek bail. Illegal outlet Police from Kranskop investigating a case in the KwaDukuza area have added a piece of the puzzle to the matter they are investigating. With the help of one of the suspects in the matter, they proceeded to the Checkers parking lot where a local driver was pointed out as the person who had purchased a firearm from one of the suspects in the case. On 2 January the father of the victim and the two men who helped chase the culprit tracked him down and called police. Simon Zungu (20) was charged for robbery and remanded in custody pending a bail consideration. CAREERS 2016 Boston looks at new world careers for the new world student “Advances in technology and new discoveries are drivers of new work and new careers. There currently are many career fields boasting stability and durability through the promise of future growth,” says Natalie Rabson, Marketing Manager at Boston City Campus & Business College. 'Events management' conjured up images of corporate hospitality or sporting events. Today it's a sunrise industry, with events becoming a cornerstone of the hospitality industry. In SA the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry is facing the same problem as our engineering sector, with experienced techies ageing out of the industry and too few young professionals coming up through the ranks. “Our software development

industry has a demand for skills. SA's younger generation needs to grab this opportunity? Then there are careers related to new-age marketing; careers such as Social and Digital Media Manager, Digital Media Consultant and Social Media Professional., “There's been an incredible 1,357 percent increase in social media positions posted on LinkedIn from 2010 to 2013. The fact is, in social media we have futureproof careers the sooner our younger generation realises it, the better,” says Rabson. Career analysts expect the number of human resources jobs to increase in the future. The median annual income for careers in human resources is above the national average in most Western countries. Today HR professionals are known as business partners who get the best from people in order for

organisations to succeed. “At Boston we remind ourselves just how important it is to stay ahead of what's happening. The technological advances and new discoveries are immediately devoured by industry. As members of academia, we therefore have to be visionaries; we are in touch with corporate and industry to determine their skills needs, and we develop course curricula in accordance with these needs. We ensure that future generations of students are fully equipped to face a rapidly changing world,” concludes Rabson. For more information on new world careers and their relevant course offerings, please visit us at 55 King Shaka Street, Stanger Mall, Stanger, 4450 or call 032 551 5566 or visit www.boston.c o.za.

Tips for choosing a career

Choosing a career is a significant decision that can change the course of your life. Such an important decision deserves considerable time and introspection. Ample information and self-examination can help you choose a satisfying career that you will enjoy for years to come. Choosing the right career path can be hard and confusing. However, this task can be made easier when you do your research and utilize a few useful tips in the decision-making process. 1. Stick to your interests When choosing the right career path for you, the most important thing that you need to remember is to stick to your interests. When you're doing something that you love, the chances of you excelling in the field will be higher and the money will follow soon enough. 2. Identify your skills and qualities This is an aspect that most people fail to give importance to. Some may think that they have no skills at all but that is entirely untrue. Some people are born with leadership

skills, while some are better suited to be followers. The former are those that excel well in careers that have to do with management because they are born with the qualities needed to lead people. Followers, on the other hand, are not to be taken lightly because they play a major role in ensuring the success of any project. When it comes to your qualities, pay attention to how you respond in certain situations. Are you the type of person that aims for perfection? Do you respond well to pressure? Your answers to these questions will help you figure out the next step after you've determined your interests. 3. Think outside of the box If you feel that you're not really cut out to be an employee, why not start your own business? Decide on what type of business you want to be involved in and then get the necessary knowledge and develop the skills needed to make it happen. Don't worry about putting up the capital for it just yet. Focus on building a network, and building

your business plan. Financing options will come up when you have a solid plan. 4. Take your time Don't decide on your career path just because you're being pressured. If you have to, take time out to figure out what you really want to do. Some people take up part-time jobs or internships in fields they think might be a good fit for them just so they can get a feel of what it's like to be working there. Others take a break from everything and travel to places so they can clear their minds. Do what you have to do to determine what type of job will make you feel happy and fulfilled. 5. Be Patient Making a career out of what you love doing is not as easy as you may think. Expect to encounter a few bumps in the road while you're treading down the path that you've chosen. Give it time and continue striving to achieve what you've envisioned for yourself. Besides, success is always sweeter when you know that you've worked really hard for it.

Apprenticeships - What you need to know By Xpress Reporter

Advantages • Apprenticeships are structured training programmes which give you a chance to work towards a qualification. They help you gain the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in your chosen industry. • Getting into employment earlier means there's lots of potential for you to progress in your career quickly. You can also begin to earn a good salary much earlier on in your life. • It gives you experience in the working world and show employers that you can 'hit the ground running'. Hands-on training gives you a real chance to put your skills into practice and helps you to gain more confidence in a working environment. • You earn while you learn. That's right! No student loans, no tuition fees, and, hopefully, no debt. You'll

be paid a salary by your employer, and the government tends to cover the cost of the training for most young people. • Choice. There are over 400 different types of apprenticeships. So whether you're hankering after a career in business, sport, marketing or construction, there's something for everyone. • It offers a varied learning experience. You won't have to spend all of your days studying; most of the time you'll be working at a company. • It's all about learning while doing, and learning from others in your industry. You can even gain higher qualifications through apprenticeships, such as Higher National Certificates / Degrees Disadvantages • Your starting salary might be much lower than that of a graduate. The minimum wage for apprentices

is not much per hour. However, many apprentices earn much more. • You can't gain access to certain careers through an apprenticeship route. Having an undergraduate degree will be an essential requirement for certain careers, particularly in areas such as medicine and science. • Graduates are valued by most employers, so you need to think carefully about your options. • If you do want to gain a higher qualification through an apprenticeship, it will take much longer and the range of courses you'll be able to study might be more limited than if you applied with A-levels. • You might find that you'll miss out on the added benefits of staying in full-time education and the depth of learning that a degree offers. • Starting salaries for graduates tend to be higher.

After the thrilling time trial off the beaten track that is Centenary and Azalea roads I am positive that the low profile tyres, iconic rims and superb suspension on one of South Africa's most instantly recognizable vehicles will most certainly require the SABS to re-look their testing standards. Mr Mayor, it's been many years since these entire streets, not forgetting the chicane that is Short Street, have enjoyed a revamp. Whilst South Africa's stage in the World Rally Championship may be some way from being finalised, the residents of Oceanview may qualify as test drivers due to their experience in "rugged terrain". I certainly hope you get a chance out of your busy schedule, with the elections coming up, to accept my invitation of an exhilarating experience in our suburb. Warmest wishes Azhar Koya Resident Oceanview PS: This is just one of many letters and phone calls received from irate ratepayers of KwaDukuza over the past year complaining about shoddy road conditions

Messi had 41% of the vote Ronaldo getting 28% and Barca's Neymar 8.0%. Messi was the star player as Barcelona won the treble of Champions League, La Liga and Spanish Cup last season, before also adding the Club World Cup last month. Although he became the first ever player to win the award five times, Messi had said earlier that he would swap all those individual accolades for a World Cup

success. "Team awards are more important than individual ones," he said, before adding that the World Cup "is every player's objective, it's really the pinnacle". Messi and his Argentina teammates came close to winning the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 but were beaten 1-0 by Germany in the final. His Barcelona boss Luis Enrique won the coach of the year award while Jill Ellis took the women's trophy. She had guided the US to women's World Cup glory in Canada last summer, beating Japan 5-2 in the final. Carli Lloyd scored a hattrick in that match and that was enough to help her land the FIFA women's player of the year gong. Brazilian Wendell Lira won the Puskas award for goal of the year for his spectacular overhead bicycle kick for Atletico Goianiense against Goaianesia in a regional league match, edging out Messi's own mazy dribble against Atletic Bilbao in last season's Copa del Rey final. Barca and Real dominated the team of the year as well with four players each, including Messi, Neymar and Ronaldo.
