KwaDukuza Municipality Acting Mayor Cllr Dolly Govender has joined the masses around the ILembe Region to congratulate the class of 2019 for doing exceptionally well in the matric exams. ILembe Education District obtained a 80,9% pass which is the highest achievement since 2015. Govender stated that the much improved matric results will prompt interest from both local and foreign investors who seek to establish educational

we will have speed humps as a measure to minimise the number of fatalities on the road. Road safety is everyone's responsibility. We will continue to give our support to the grieving families and we hope God will give you strength during this period,” added Ntuli. ILembe District Municipality Mayor, Councillor Sduduzo Gumede lashed out at reckless

drivers and said most of the road crashes could and should have been prevented if road users can observe laws of the road. “This is a terrible tragedy. To the bereaved families and survivors, I am saying to you, be not afraid during this dark hour of your lives, you will not walk this journey alone,” said Gumede.

lives during the accident. “It saddens us that the leaders had to hear about the tragedy of this calibre that claimed so many lives after a lot of measures were put in place to help curb road crashes and carnages,” said Ntuli. Ntuli also announced that by the end of January there will be speed humps on the R102 between Shakaskraal and Ballito. “By the end of January

institutions in Ilembe. “I wish to categorically thank all teachers and principals who worked tirelessly to ensure that the children of South Africa, who are ultimately its future, are moulded to produce such results,” said the Acting Mayor. She further pleaded with those students who have made it and have received offers to study in Universities, TVETs and Colleges but feel they are financially bound to proceed, to come forward and apply for the municipality's f i n a n c i a l

assistance aide. “Though financial assistance aide only pays monies to the sum of R5000,00 maximum, KwaDukuza Municipality is based on the premise that an individual would at least be enrolled to their institution of choice and then seek financial assistance programmes that exist in that particular institution to carry on,” added Govender. In conclusion, the Acting

Mayor conveyed a message of support to those who did not make it, urged them to dust themselves up, learn from their failures and seek a second chance. “All failures are learning curbs, I request that you pursue government-accredited repeat/second chance programmes and shy away from using bogus repeat/second chance institutions,” concluded the Mayor.

“Where Price is King!”

Glendale SAPS have launched a man hunt for three suspects following a horrific farm attack that took place in Tregenia farm in Glendale on 09 January 2020. It's reported that three males armed with a crowbar, knife and cane knife gained entry into the farm, tied up three occupants at the farm and assaulted them. Glendale SAPS Communications Officer Nhlaliyenza Mahlobo confirmed the incident, and said police are pleading with anyone who might have information about the attackers to come forward. “Around 23:00 on the 09 January 2020 we received a call stating that there's a farm attack. Three suspects gained entry into the farm, robbed the occupants of cellphones and other belongings, and further forced one victim to drive to Shell Garage in Umvoti Toll to withdraw money from the ATM. On their way back, two attackers raped the victim in Tinley Manor. After the ordeal, the suspects forced the victim to drive towards Shakaskraal where they got off and fled. The victim managed to drive back to the farm where they further went to a hospital in Tongaat,” said Mahlobo. “Police are currently investigating a case of house robbery, kidnapping and rape, but we have viewed the footage from Shell Garage,” added Nhlaliyenza Mahlobo. No arrests have been made thus far.

Matrics celebrate 2019 results

Lindokuhle Mvelase

By Xpress Reporter

The Top Five Grade 12 learners in the iLembe District Municipality have done themselves, their parents and their schools proud with the achievement of outstanding results. The future looks bright for these remarkable learners, as they bagged numerous distinctions and brought honour to the district. iLembe's top learner, Lindokuhle Mvelase obtained 7 distinctions these include Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, English First Additional Language, isiZulu Home Language, and Life Orientation. The brilliant Groutville High School learner plans to study Mechanical Engineering at Stellenbosch University. “Always work hard, be focused and give it your all,” said Lindokuhle. He thanked God, his teachers and his family for their support. Nokukhanya Mcanyana of Qinisani High School was placed 2nd in iLembe. She obtained a whopping 8 distinctions and will be studying Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. “Through dedication and determination, all is possible. I would be a miss if I did not acknowledge the wonderful work done by the teachers together with

the Principal of Qinisani High School. The extra classes played a major role,” said Nokukhanya. She urged current matric students to focus on their studies. Shakaskraal Secondary School learner, Shivaadon Poonen scooped 3rd place in iLembe, and achieved distinctions in Afrikaans First Additional Language, Engineering Graphics and Design, English Home Language, Geography, Life Orientation, Mathematics and Physical Science. He plans to study Civil Engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He advises current learners to make the necessary sacrifices. “You must be driven by a need of success and not a fear of failure. Live healthily and get the necessary nutrients the natural way (fruit and veg). Make a study schedule and treat setbacks as data collected to improve the next attempt. Share your knowledge with your peers - it comes back to you,” said Shivaadon. Manor Secondary learner, Himal Sing was placed 4th in iLembe. He obtained distinctions in Physical Sciences, Engineering Graphics and Design, Information Technology, English, Afrikaans, Mathematics and Life Orientation. He will study Medicine at the University of Cape Town. “I STRICTLY HALAAL

believe that Medicine is a good field because it is closely involved with the community and society,” said Himal. He advises current learners to cut out distractions and remain focused on their studies. He added that he has not owned a cellphone at any point in his schooling career. “I would like to thank my motivators, including my educators and my parents.” iLembe's 5 t h learner, Minenhle Majola of Vukile High School also achieved phenomenal results. Also among the outstanding achievers is another Groutville High School learner, Snothile Zikhali, who obtained 7 distinctions. She will be studying Medicine at the University of KwaZuluNatal. “Spend more time studying and avoid pleasures that will hinder your results,” she said. KwaZulu-Natal claimed the fifth position with 81.3% of the province's passing. The overall national pass rate improved by 3.1% from the previous year's 78.2%.

Finding employment after matric Whether you're taking a gap year, studying or jumping right in, here are a few tips that may help you in 2020, or in the long run, to get the job of your dreams. · Be confident Confident people stand out from the crowd. Here's a little trick to help you even when you're feeling nervous: Stand up straight with your feet apart, your shoulders back and your fists on your hips. This is called the power pose. Now remind yourself of every fantastic thing about you. Believe in yourself and your unique gifts. Now go and take the world by storm. · Network, network, network This is one of the most important things you can do when looking for work. Ask everyone you know if they know about any jobs you could apply for, and ask them to introduce you to other people who might know of a few good positions. · Your job is to find yourself a job Looking for work is a full-time job until you find it! Read job ads online, even in the newspaper, and apply for the ones that look right for you. Don't apply for only one or two apply for everything you can possibly do, and ensure you tailor your cover letter to each one and explain why you want that job specifically. Keep talking to everyone you meet about your job search. · Get your CV and references in order You need a written CV. If your English is not very good, have someone check your spelling and grammar. · Look where the jobs are 80% of entry-level jobs are in the service and sales industries like retail, restaurants and hotels. Also look out for small businesses that hire young, enthusiastic people who are willing to learn and grow with the

business. But be prepared to start as a junior at entrylevel. We all have to go through this valuable time to gain experience and prove ourselves. · Volunteer Volunteering is a great way to gain experience. Offer to help out at your church, community centre or sports club. Any kind of job counts as experience and can be added to your CV. You could also offer to work for free at businesses in your area but be very clear about your reasons for doing this. Tell them you want to gain experience or you hope the business will hire you in future. · Make sure you're always contactable Use only one cell phone number when you're looking for a job. Keep your phone on and fully charged and answer calls politely. If your number does change, make sure you change it on your CV too. You also need an email address to send your CV out. If you don't have one, it's easy to set up a free @gmail account using your name and surname. · Beware of social media Potential employers will look you up on social media before they interview or employ you. The rule of social media is that if you don't want people (especially employers) to know something about you, then don't put it out there for them to see. It's that simple. · Register with an online recruitment agency For help with job hunting, register with an online recruitment agency. They'll have you list your skills and strengths, and match you with employment opportunities. Similarly, they'll match employers with you. -News24

A group of 18 persons comprising ex-pupils and exteachers met at Mike's Kitchen in Salt Rock on Saturday, 11 January to form a committee to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the iconic Stanger Secondary School. It was an exploratory meeting to sound out ideas and proposals to take to the broader community in the next fortnight. The School turns a century on the 3 August 2020 and plans to commemorate this momentous occasion are slowly but surely taking shape. After much discussion, it was decided to call this interim committee SHESU (Stanger High Ex-Students Union) 100. The meeting was co-chaired by Prem Maharaj and Deborah Samuel and all those present, among whom were Krish Sambiah and Christy Kistasamy (former Principal and Deputy Principal of Stanger Secondary respectively), were given an opportunity to make inputs. Among the many ideas put forward the following seemed to be the most popular: a gala dinner/banquet, sports activity, a concert/excerpts from former school plays like "Pygmalion" and "Oliver", a float through the town with community involvement, and a display of artefacts and memorabilia. A 4 person delegation was elected to meet with the Principal, Staff and SGB of the School to inform them of the plans of the interim committee. An appeal is being made to the various Class Groups that have celebrated Reunions in the recent past to come forward and join SHESU 100 to make the celebration a joint effort. The persons to contact are Prem Maharaj (082-8804888), Deborah Samuel (083-7772181) and Mike Balwanth (083-5349940). All past pupils, teachers, secretaries and those who have some association with the School are urged to participate in the commemoration. It's a once in a lifetime occasion and a time for celebration and jubilation. The community will be updated with regular progress reports. -Inserted by the Interim Committee of SHESU 100

MEC Mshengu presents state of readiness

BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE Who says that the death knell of 5-day tests has been sounded? Not after the finish of the 2nd test between South Africa and England at Newlands which went up to the last eight overs of the match. Definitely thrilling stuff that had viewers, listeners and fans at the edge of their seats. Were it not for some dumb brain shots played by the experienced Proteas skipper, Faf du Plessis, and the less experienced Quinton de Kock, the game could have been saved as the pitch had become reasonably placid and batting on it was much easier than the first two days. Barring a rough patch on one side of the wicket that helped the part-time leg-spinner, Dom Sibley, the pace men were innocuous except for the multi-talented allrounder Ben Stokes who was able to extract some disconcerting bounce. He could not be kept out of the action: scorer of runs, taker of catches (6) in the slips, and picker-up of wickets at crucial moments. He was duly and deservedly declared as the Man of the Match.

Other major contributors were Sibley (133), Ollie Pope, Joe Root with the bat and James Anderson (7 wkts) with the ball until he had to cry off with injury. An England victory by 189 runs means that the series is allsquare at 1-1 and the action moves to St George's Park in Port Elizabeth, the oldest cricket ground in SA, on Thursday (tomorrow). In the EPL, Liverpool is breaking every conceivable record. At the end of the weekend, they head the log by 14 points with a match in hand from defending champions, Manchester City who are 2 points ahead of Leicester City who were defeated at home by Southampton. This season they are unbeaten and the first team to play 21 games to achieve this feat. At this point, they are a shoe-in to win the Premier League for the first time since its inception despite winning the Champions League, World Inter-club competition and several KO competitions. The League title is theirs for the taking. This time they cannot let it

slip as they did last season. In the meantime, all roads lead to Anfield for this Sunday's clash between perennial rivals Liverpool and Manchester United. This time round, United is not in the same league as their opponents and the best they can do is to avoid defeat by more than 3 goals. Such is the difference between the two teams. If there is any other result, then it's an upset for the books. So both sets of supporters, get your shirts ready and let's see who will have it on by the end of the match! Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.

ANC KZN reschedules anniversary rally By Xpress Reporter

Back to School 2020 A message to Learners, Teachers and Parents This morning, on the first day of school in 2020 I, Councillor Siduduzo Gumede, the Mayor of iLembe District Municipality along with fellow councillors and traditional leaders will be accompanying members of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, the Department of Education and other relevant stakeholders who will be visiting schools in the district as part of the School Opening Functionality Monitoring Programme. This is an annual programme where schools are visited to ensure that teaching and learning takes place on the first day of school in all eleven districts in the province. I would like to take this opportunity to wish learners all the best as school's re-open today and to also congratulate you on taking one step further in ensuring a bright future not only for themselves but their families, communities and ultimately the province and the country. To all teachers and principals, I hope you are relaxed, recharged and ready to start a new school year working hard hand in hand with the parents and the Department to make this yet another productive school year. To the parents, much work remains to be done but I know that education in the district is on a trajectory of success, this is testament to 2019's Matric Pass Rate. I therefore invite all parents to be a part of this journey. I urge you to hold hands with the teachers in raising and shaping these young bright minds and future leaders. May 2020 be a year of plenty…passes and successes! The future of this district, province and country depends on it. ANC Spokesperson

in KZN Ricardo Mthembu said the rescheduling follows the announcement by King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, the reigning King of the Zulu nation that on the 25th January 2020 the kingdom will observe Umkhosi wase-Sandlwana, “It is out of respect to His Majesty and the Zulu nation that we have opted to postpone our anniversary rally. Youngsters keep Dawnheights firing

The youngsters that steered Dawnheights to victory: L-R Sheldon, Suveer and Wasim

In the resumption of the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union Challenge league game played at the Gledhow Grounds this past Sunday, the young guns of Dawnheights Cricket Club kept firing against Railways that kept them at the summit of the league. Dawnheights won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision that paid dividends as the heat took its toll on Railways. Suveer and Wasim took advantage and batted with ease and steadily reached a 100 run opening stand. Wasim fell on 57 to a rash shot. 3 quick wickets at 121 threatened to derail the good start but veteran Avishkar

steadied the innings and proved a perfect foil for opener Suveer. Their 76 run stand was broken when Avishkar was run out. Suveer soon followed after an excellent knock for 93. A mini lower collapse was followed as Sheldon, Ntuli and Yusuf took the total to a respectable 242 after 50 overs. S. Maharaj was Railways best bowler ending with 7 wickets. Railways started their reply as the festive break saw Sheldon and Ntuli begin nervously. The occasional short ball was brutally put away to the boundary. Sheldon soon brought his line and length to bear as he

ripped the top order to shreds sending their top 3 back to the shade of the trees. The change bowlers put the squeeze on and the pressure soon told as Railways soon found themselves at 68/5. Some excellent fielding saw Railways tottering down as Sheldon took his 4th of the day. Suveer brought the game to an end on 90 giving Dawnheights another bonuspoint victory. T h e d o m i n a n t performance by the youngsters shows that the future of Dawnheights Cricket Club is in good hands and keeps them on top of the table.

Mervin's Meat Market sponsors Morningside

Mervin's Meat Market provided a major boost to Morningside Cricket Club who ply their trade in the iLembe District Cricket Union when they sponsored playing shirts to the club. Levan Moodaly, captain of Morningside, was ecstatic on receiving the playing shirts. He profusely thanked Mervin

Pillay, director of the newly established business in Rocky Park and an ardent sportsman and volleyball player, for his invaluable support for the young squad of Morningside and added that this sponsorship goes a long way in motivating the youngsters in continuing playing cricket and doing

well on the field thus keeping them away from the social ills of society. Mervin Pillay, himself a young businessman said that he was impressed by the enthusiasm show by the players and management of Morningside. He added it is his belief that his contribution would go a long

way in motivating this team and urged others to get involved. “Keeping

youngsters on the sports field in his contribution to society and his commitment to the

upliftment of the community”, said Pillay.
