approached him and shouted at him, demanding that he inserts his PIN. The suspect then disappeared. “Luckily for the complainant, the local security company members saw that he was driving a white KIA Picanto and he drove off towards Spar.

Press “Upon arrival at Spar, the suspect was spotted at another ATM. The community and the security members managed to net him while he was trying to drive off in his vehicle. The police were called and the suspect and his vehicle were searched and he was found in possession of more than 10 assorted bank cards including SASSA cards, one car breaking implement and cash amounting to R750,” said Khuzwayo. The suspect was arrested and appeared at court.

Foreign nationals arrested By Xpress Reporter

Three foreign nationals were arrested on the N2 near Mvoti Toll Plaza on Friday, 10 May 2019 at around 22:30, following a tip-off that they might be in possession of illegal items. Constable Khuzwayo of KwaDukuza SAPS said, “Empangeni POP followed the trio from far north to ensure that they do not leave any stone unturned and to find out how

many vehicles were involved in the commission of crime.” “Upon the arrest and search, 161 pairs of counterfeit Adidas push-ins, 84 pairs of kids' sandals and 42 pairs of Adidas flip flops were seized. The female suspects aged between 36 and 39 were arrested and detained at KwaDukuza SAPS.” He added that bail will be opposed for the purpose of verification of their legal status in South Africa.

Zikalala nominated as KZN Premier Candidate By Xpress Reporter

MEC: Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala

After much talk that the Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in the province may not get the premiership position in KZN as he did not support President Cyril Ramaphosa at Nasrec in 2017, a report from the special NEC meeting says that Sihle Zikalala will be chairing the seat very soon. On Monday, the ANC convened a special executive to discuss the nomination of its Premier Candidates.

Announcing its premiership candidates in seven provinces, the party said in arriving at its decision, its national executive committee was guided by gender parity requirements, unity, stability in its structures, youth and intergenerational mix, experience and integrity. “The NEC further agreed that in provinces where Premiers are men, then at least 60% of the Provincial Executive must be constituted by women. There was consensus that in instances where the Premier is a female there shall be at least 50 - 50

representation in the Provincial Executive. Speakers in all provinces will be women irrespective of whether the Premier is male or female. Youth representation must be integrated. The NEC expressed appreciation to all its structures, volunteers, the elections team, alliance partners and supporters who gave their time, efforts and worked tirelessly during the election campaign. The ANC will undergo a process of selfintrospection and assessment of its election campaign,” said the ANC.

Mandeni Local Municipality, under the leadership of Her Worship the acting Mayor Cllr. Phindile Sishi has partnered with Icebolethu Funerals with the aim of bridging the gap of inequality by handing over 200 school uniforms to students from various schools within our Municipality. “As we approach winter, a lot of students will be forced to walk barefoot, with the help of our sponsor Icebolethu we will make sure that we help to keep students at school and they go there with dignity,” said Sishi. “We would also like to urge more businesses operating within communities not only in Mandeni but everywhere in South Africa to dedicate a portion of their profits to uplifting and improving the wellbeing of the people,” further said Sishi.

DA shows remarkable growth

World Hypertension Day

Councillor’s Corner

The DA in KwaDukuza region has shown remarkable growth from 20.52% in 2014 with 18743 votes to 21528 votes in 2019 taking it to 22.21%. We received 2785 more votes. Our message of hope and change resonated well with the voters. In KwaDukuza we outperformed the DA national average of 20.7% and even performed better than the Provincial average sitting at 14.24%. The DA also grew its support in Mandini by 0.81%, Ndwedwe by 1.12 %, and in Maphumulo doubled its support from 304 votes to 618 votes an increase of 1.13%. The DA is proud of its achievements and owe it to the voters. Its clear mandate to give the opposition more support to hold the ruling party accountable and expose their shortcomings. This results bodes well for the 2021 local government elections and act as a

springboard to do even better. There is every possibility together with all opposition the DA can form a coalition government in KwaDukuza which is ripe for the picking. Currently there is only 8 seat difference out of 57 seats. With this results it could be further narrowed to 5 seats. DA had outright wins in ward 17 Stanger Manor with 67% crushing the ANC to 25 % ward 16 Stanger heights/Indian Village while came neck to neck in Glenhills and Shakaskraal and came second best in the KwaDukuza CBD ward 19. The DA also did extremely well in the Ballito/Salt Rock areas. Thank you KwaDukuza and Ilembe regions for your overwhelming support. Cllr Madhun Sobram Sing Ward 17 - DACaucus Leader

World Hypertension Day is observed on 17 May 2019 and was first held in May 2005. It has become an annual event ever since. The purpose of the day is to promote public awareness of hypertension and to encourage citizens of all countries to prevent and control this silent killer. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure is elevated in the arteries. This means the heart has to work too hard to

Approximately 4 in 10 adults have raised blood pressure which often goes undiagnosed, but healthy attitudes can help combat hypertension. • Eat a balanced diet; • Cut back on salt; • Exercise regularly; • Limit the alcohol; • Monitor your blood pressure. An estimated 18% of deaths (9.4 million) and 162 million years of life lost world-wide were attributed to increased blood pressure in 2010. The theme for World Hypertension Day is Know Your Numbers with a goal of increasing high blood pressure (BP) awareness in all populations around the world.

He claimed gold in the 100m and 200m events in the age category 66-70 years. This is his 10th time representing KZN at the Masters. He was arguably the fastest man in South Africa during his heyday in the late 1960s and 1970s apartheid South Africa, Yacoob Motala was destined for Olympic gold but the situation in the country during that time did not allow. BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE Three weeks is a long time in the world of sports. So much has transpired and so many competitions have come to a conclusion. Football and cricket were in the limelight and in the past week we have witnessed events that would not have been good for viewers with weak hearts. In the IPL, Mumbai Indians beat Chennai Superkings in the last ball of the game. After spinner Krunal Pandiya was hit for three consecutive sixes in the 18th over, Lasith Malinga, one of the finest "death" bowlers in the game, bowled the last over to defend 9 runs and claim a vital wicket of the last ball with two runs to win and one to tie. He was able to produce his famed "toecrusher" yorker to trap Shardul Thakur LBW and obtain a memorable victory for the Ambani-owned Indians. It was the ball of the tournament, bowled under extreme pressure and heaps of responsibility on his broad shoulders. This was live theatre at its best and could rank with any other exciting finishes in the game. Credit must also go to Jasprit Bumrah whom Sachin Tendulkar rates as the best bowler in world cricket, especially in the limited-overs format. His last two overs, the 17th and 19th, cost only 8 runs as he tied down boundary hitters Shane Watson and Dwayne Bravo, thus giving Malinga the leeway to introduce some variety into his deliveries. It was a fitting end to a match that swung in fortune from side to side, favouring one side and then the other. Perhaps, only a superover could have added to the drama. The excitement and thrills did not end on the cricket field. For three consecutive nights, football enthusiasts were treated to nervewracking endings as teams who went into vital ties as underdogs emerged victorious. Liverpool trailing 3-0 against Barcelona played host to the Spanish champions at Anfield needing to score 4 goals without conceding.

Much against the odds they did exactly that with the winner being scored with minutes to spare in normal time. They had reached the final of the Champions League (CL). The next night it was the turn of Tottenham Hotspurs. They went over to Amsterdam trailing Ajax 1-0 and needed to score at least 2 goals to win without conceding. But after Ajax had almost made the tie safe by scoring first, Spurs retaliated by scoring three in the second half without reply. Again, the last and winning goal was scored just before the final whistle. They, too, had reached the final. And then, to complete the hat-trick Chelsea in the Europa League (EL) beat Eintracht Frankfurt in a penalty shoot-out 4-3 after the match ended goalless after extratime. Some superb saves by their goalkeeper kept them in the hunt. So the two most important club championships in Europe will be contested by 4 clubs from the EPL for the first time in history. In the CL, Liverpool will meet Spurs while Arsenal will be up against Chelsea in the EL. These games will be played on the 1 June and 29 May respectively. The season ended for the EPL and the PSL with the declaration of winners going right to the wire. In the PSL Sundowns retained its title by defeating Free State Stars away 1-0. This also meant that the loser was automatically relegated although it ended with the same number of points as Maritzburg United (27) but with an inferior goal difference. United will have to play in qualifying matches against teams from the NFD to try and retain its place in the PSL. Orlando Pirates came second, two points behind Sundowns. In the EPL, Manchester City had to win to retain its title and it did just that. Although Liverpool won its last fixture against Wolves, it was not enough to win its first title since 1990. Accumulating 97 points and suffering just one defeat the entire season, they were still one point short at the end. It was a cruel disappointment

for the legion of Liverpool supporters who will have to wait Jayce Singh is a former administrator and a n o t h e r sports Patron of the KZNCU year to lay hands on the Holy Grail. In any other year (except the last), 97 points would have been enough to lift the title. For City, it is an opportunity to make history by winning the FA Cup and obtaining 3 trophies in a season. They have already won the League Cup. So as the season winds down, soccer fans can put their feet up and continue the debate about what might have been. The last word. How can the suits of the PSL claim that their League is the best in Africa? Saturday saw the PSL trophy being handed over to Sundowns with all the fanfare that such an occasion demands. But still hanging over Sundowns is the decision of the PSL who have recommended that Sundowns be deducted points and fined for their misdemeanour. Sometimes in December Sundowns introduced a player, Wayne Arendse, onto the field from the grandstand as a substitute when his name was not on the team sheet. Thereafter, the Disciplinary Committee went into action and came up with a decision which has subsequently been appealed against by the PSL. SAFA, meanwhile, didn't find it urgent enough to finalise the matter as it felt that the PSL had sufficient time (six months) to sort out the matter. If Sundowns is deducted 3 points, then Pirates can be declared champions. Can we, in this day and age with all the modern technology at our disposal, not resolve a matter that is detrimental our reputation as sports administrators? Surely, such shenanigans should not be permitted to prevail! Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.

Members of the Smurfs Hiking Club at the summit of Mike's Pass

The Smurfs Hiking Club were back in stunning Didima Valley in Northern Drakensberg. The Club successfully completed a challenging 9.5 hour trek through Mashongwane Gorge and

descended via Mike Pass at an altitude of 5500m above sea level. With multiple river crossings and steep ascends, the 16km berg hike was a tough but highly memorable adventure. A

special mentioned has to be made of the eldest member of the group, G. Mothilal who displayed genuine courage and grit during this tough Berg trek.

Bethel crowned Easter Champions Favourites, Darnall United seem to be on an unlucky streak having now lost 1-2 to newcomers Bethel CC who were crowned the KwaDukuza Volleyball Association Easter Champions. Darnall have now lost their second final in two tournaments in 2019, the first being the season opener. After eliminating the opening tournament winner, Shakas Sporting in the group stages, Darnall were hands on favourites to lift the Easter tourney, but this was not to be as Bethel stunned them last Thursday. The first set was an eye opener for Darnall as they lost the hard fought set 21-25 to Bethel who towered over the Darnall defence. Darnall received a tongue lashing during the break from manager, Vinesh Geanballey. They regrouped in the second set and showed their prowess and favourite status as they

stormed through 25-14 to the level the scores at 1-1 and force the game into the final and crucial third set. The huge spectator base expected Darnall to cruise in the final set but this was not to be. Bethel had other ideas and matched Darnall point for point. The courts were ablaze with power hitting and incredible defence and retrievable that had the crowd in awe. However, Bethel were unfazed by all this and held on to their nerves to run out 15-13 victors to claim their first tournament in the KDVA ranks and have sent a clear message to Darnall and Shakas that there is another player in the field. Earlier, Sunbrook defeated Heights 3022 to claim the other podium finish. KDVA kicks off their league tomorrow (Thursday) at the courts at Stanger High with KSST (ladies team) making a comeback. Gledhow and Singh's show how it's done Round 5 of the Trophy & Engravers league was played last Tuesday at The Quartz Sports Bar and Conference Centre in Stanger Manor. High flying Gledhow United took on The Quartz in game one. Gledhow United dominated

from the word go, taking a 6-1 lead only requiring 2 points out of 8 to secure the points. Justin Naidoo, Nine Pillay and Vasa Rungasamy made sure of that by winning their singles and securing a 9-6 victory. The only players to offer some resistance for The Quartz were

Ryan Gopaul, Leon Moonsamy and Bradley Majid. Game Number two, Singh's Fireworks took on bottom club Darnall United in a closely fought encounter. After the team and trebles games, the scores were locked at 3-3. Singh's took a 5-3 lead when Meersing Sobram and Ajen Singh defeated Vinesh Geanballey and Jerry Govender. Sanjay Singh and Wenley Venketas did well to discard of Jerry Arunachellum and Devan Govender. Darnall pulled one back as Preolin Muthusamy and Terrence Subban defeated Dennis Govender and Mervin Pillay taking the score to 5-4. Going into the singles Singh's required 3 of 6 for the win and they did just that as Meersing, Dennis and Mervin secured a nervy 8-7 victory for Singh's who are now sitting second on the log going into the • Octane Boosters (Petrol & Diesel) final games. • Automatic Transmission & Powersteering Treatment Next week's games will • Advanced Petrol & Diesel System Cleaner revert to Wednesday nights as there are no • Aircon Treatment & Sealants interruptions like the past weeks. Game one • Battery • Car Aircons between Singh's and • Cables (Hand Brakes Etc) • Vehicle Diagnostics Gledhow United will see the winner lift the league • Key Coding • Fuel Injection title. The battle for second spot continues as The Quartz will take on 032 551 4400 / 081 270 3809 Darnall United in game two.
