ANC weighs in on alleged racism By Xpress Reporter

T

he African National Congress (ANC) in the General Gizenga Mpanza Region has called for transformation at the height of alleged racism and exploitation of primarily black people at Kwasizabantu Mission Station which is linked to a number of successful commercial enterprises located between Maphumulo and Kranskop. According to the statement issued by the ANC there have been a number of cases that have been reported to leadership of the party regarding racism incidents. “We have noted with concern, the reports of alleged racism associated with Kwasizabantu. At the height of such reports, we wish to condemn without reservation, the conduct of this entity and their religious practices which seem to contradict and undermine the Bill of Rights together with human values. It is disappointing to learn of allegations of racism in an institution that was established with a mission to bring different people together with an aim of spiritual wellness, restoration

of hope, as well as education. The institution remains highly racialized based on the alleged incidents that have been reported to the leadership of the ANC by several victims recently. We view the work to transform this institution has hereditary traits of the white oppressors of the past and we find it very difficult to comprehend with the fact that this is an institution that was founded upon Christianity through a travelling evangelist, Hartwig Stegen during the apartheid times which today continues to thrive under the principles of white supremacy. “In the precept of religion, the mission has allegedly become law onto itself with rules that are in direct contradiction to the Constitution and human values. Such is highlighted by the way they allegedly treat their employees, how there long service employees are underpaid and the gross inequality along racial lines. Prejudice against Women - Women are subjected to head wraps or forced to maintain short hair wherein such instances amount to the violation of human rights. For years, this mission has not allowed women to dress in a way

that encourages the freedom of self- respect and be tolerant of other broadcasts in most parts of KZN. A major contradiction in this case is expression. It's not easy to peoples' rights. “We should all enjoy the right to that the etymology of the word determine that the Mission is still prejudice in nature and considers no religious freedom and all beliefs are Kwasizabantu is in terms of the C o n s t i t u t i o n a l i m p e r a t i v e respected. iLembe honours Madiba's legacy By Xpress Reporter

In celebrating the centenary of the late Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu the Deputy Minister of Energy Ambassador, Thembisile Majola accompanied by iLembe District Municipality Mayor, Cllr Siduduzo Gumede and Maphumulo Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Matozi KhuzwayoDlamini handed over Energy Efficiency Lighting, Solar Water Heating, Biogas Digester and Rain Water Harvesting System to Masisizane Early Childhood Development Centre at a community event held on Monday, 6 August 2018 in Maphumulo. In her welcoming remarks, Maphumulo Mayor, Councillor Matozi Khuzwayo-Dlamini spoke about the importance of being independent as a woman and not relying on a partner or government for support. “As women we must be determined and have vision in all that we do like the stalwart Mama Albertina Sisulu. Women have always been in the forefront whether it's

leading homes or communities and now it's time to take our rightful places in business and other fields,” she said. Giving the message of support were Dr Thembakazi Mali from the South Africa National Energy Development Institute and Ms Judy Herman of National Development Agency. The founder of Masisizane, Ms Mabongi Ngubane encouraged others to start building their own legacies. “Start today. Whatever it is that you want to I urge you to start today. Whatever you want to do, government or backers must find you along the way. For me, I have done what Nelson Mandela said and that is to build a lasting legacy for my community,” said Ngubane. Before introducing the Deputy Minister, the Mayor of the district, Cllr Siduduzo Gumede said that as South Africans we have something that other nations do not have to succeed and that is the spirit of Ubuntu. “Through our compassion, respect for one another and

The KwaDukuza Municipality has oversaw the sitting of the first of many meetings between parolees, rehabilitated inmates and social partners to get a thorough understanding of issues faced by parolees in the municipal area particularly their reintegration to society. Respecting the significance and prominence of women, this pivotal meeting was presided over by the Deputy Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality, Councillor Dolly Govender. The Deputy Mayor requested that the parolees and rehabilitated inmates play a more active role to counter the youth from joining a life that will see them end up behind bars.

KDM meets with rehabilitated inmates This endeavor is part of a variety of initiatives formed by the Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu, to advance a more coordinated communication system between the municipality and various consortia in communities to encourage public participation and provide a platform to respond to immediate issues within the ambit of the local authority. Parolees and rehabilitated inmates indicated that when they seek jobs, employers discriminate against them “even though you are the perfect candidates for the job, these circumstances therefore

lure you back to the life you have escaped from.” Parolees and rehabilitated inmates raised as a challenge that during imprisonment they are afforded many opportunities to upskill themselves and are told that this should be sufficient for them to begin a new chapter where they ultimately become breadwinners, however the reality is that employers don't trust them to give them jobs. During the discussion, they expressed that they are forced to lie on their CVs and company profiles because if they tell the truth, they are discriminated against. Parolees and rehabilitated inmates have

also said that they are not safe in the communities because every time something wrong happens, they are the prime suspects and the law supports that stigma in the community.

Rock throwers arrested for murder By Xpress Reporter

detectives for investigation. Extensive police investigation led to the arrest of three suspects. Selvan Govender (46) ‚ Nathan Govender (23) and Qiniso Gumbi (21) were arrested this week. They each face two counts of murder. On December 27, Amina Haffejee and her seven-yearold brother, Abdur were travelling from Umhlanga Rocks to Stanger when the rock ripped through the windshield. It hit Haffejee and the force of impact caused her passenger seat to fly back and hit Abdur‚

A team of detectives in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested three suspects aged between 20 and 46 for two counts of murder and attempted murder. It is alleged that on the night of 27 December 2017, the victims were traveling on the N2 freeway when a big boulder was thrown onto their vehicle from the Tongaat Bridge. Two people died and the other victim sustained injuries. A case of murder was opened at Tongaat police station and was assigned to the Provincial

who was sitting behind her. At the beginning of the year a R250 000 reward was offered for anyone who might have tangible information regarding the rock-throwing incident. In the same month‚ police questioned six teenagers during their investigation into a spate of rock-throwing incidents. They were not charged because there was insufficient evidence. The men will be held in custody until their next appearance in court on August 23.

Pregnancy is a beautiful process of bringing new life into the world, but it doesn't come without its problems and can take its toll on a woman's body in many different ways. As a result, women face many health problems both during and after pregnancy. Physiotherapists are trained professionals who are able to help you manage these problems better. Discussed below are some of the health problems facing moms-to-be and new moms, and more importantly, how physiotherapy can help manage them: DURING PREGNANCY · Neck and back pain: This usually happens because your posture changes with your growing belly and, depending on what you do during the day (prolonged sitting at a desk, prolonged standing or lots of physical activity), this can lead to ligament strains, stiffness in the spine, or joint and muscular pain. Your physiotherapist will aim to provide pain relief, and teach you how to stretch and exercise in a safe manner so that you can enjoy your pregnancy. · Rib pain: This can occur when there's a pull on the cartilage that connects the ribs to the breast bone or when your baby is positioned in a way that restricts the natural rib movement that occurs when you breathe. Your baby may also be k i c k i n g y o u r r i b s ! Yo u r physiotherapist will work to facilitate movement in the ribs to provide relief for the muscles that are irritated and sore. · Carpal tunnel syndrome: This happens when there is a fluid buildup in the wrist that compresses your nerves. This causes pain, numbness, feelings of 'pins and needles' and 'puffiness' to develop in the fingers and hand. Your physiotherapist will use ultrasound, exercises, kinesiotape, and massage to ease this fluid build-up and relieve pain; and teach you how to manage this condition at home. · Lower abdominal discomfort: This is caused sometimes by the stretching of the ligaments of the uterus as your baby grows. Your physiotherapist will aim to support the abdominal area using kinesiotape

or a brace and ease the discomfort with hands-on treatment. When in doubt, see your GP or gynaecologist. · Buttock pain: Usually one sided; most often occurs as muscles and ligaments get tight and restricted in their movement. This is as a result of the muscles working harder than usual to support the pelvis and the growing weight of baby. Your physiotherapist will work to provide pain relief and reduce muscle tightness as your body keeps changing. · Numbness/altered sensation down the leg: Some women may feel a variety of uncomfortable sensations in their leg(s) during pregnancy. Mostly this is from increased pressure on the nerves in the lower back and/or the legs, either from an increase in body fluids (our blood volume increases by 40% during pregnancy), or from tight muscles. Here, your physiotherapist will work to relieve that pressure through hands-on techniques and gentle movement. · Pubic symphysis discomfort: This discomfort is felt below your belly button (where the two parts of your pelvis meet and form a joint). A little extra movement can occur here as a result of the hormone relaxin allowing the pelvis to expand to support your baby. A physiotherapist will work to create some support around the pelvis and teach you how to move while, for example, turning over in bed or getting in and out of a car without experiencing discomfort. The use of a sacro-iliac joint (SIJ) belt or maternity belt is very beneficial as well, but must be fitted a n d w o r n c o r r e c t l y . Yo u r physiotherapist will show you how. · Swelling in the feet: During pregnancy, our bodies produce more fluids to support the baby's growth which can result in swollen feet. The swelling is mainly caused by gravity pulling the extra fluid down into the lower leg and foot area, and then the body struggles to pump the fluid back up into the body's normal circulatory system. Your physiotherapist may use massage, exercises, and sometimes compression socks/stockings to treat this, and teach you how you manage this better at home.

· Calf cramps: This is probably the bane for most pregnant women as it comes mainly during the night, interrupting much-needed sleep. The lower legs support the increasing weight of the upper body during pregnancy and the muscles can get tight and tired, going into cramp or spasm. Physio treatment includes heat, stretches and massage. AFTER PREGNANCY After birth, most new moms opt to breastfeed because of the obvious benefits for their babies. Unfortunately, breastfeeding can come with many health challenges for the new mom. These include pain during latching and feeds, chapped nipples, strain to the neck and shoulders, breast tissue engorgement, blocked ducts, and mastitis. · One of the first things your physio can help with is education of good posture when feeding; breast or bottle. It is important to sit comfortably with good posture, so that the strain to the body, neck and shoulders is less. When you consider that the mother of a newborn can spend up to 40 hours or more a week feeding her baby, you realise how import this is. · Good posture will help the baby latch well. A good latch can help minimise the amount of damage and irritation to the nipples. It will also help ensure that the breast drains well during feeds, and therefore decrease risk of developing blocked ducts and mastitis. · Breast engorgement: This is experienced when the breasts are filled with milk, and therefore this causes swelling, pain and throbbing. The swelling will compress the milk ducts making it hard for milk to flow. The swollen breast can also make it hard for a newborn to latch. Physiotherapy can help with ultrasound to reduce inflammation and swelling, and instruction in gentle lymphatic massage to help reduce swelling. Use of cold compressed between feeds can help settle both the pain and swelling, and heat can be helpful to warm the breast just before a feed. · Blocked ducts can occur whenever there is excess compression on a duct that stops the duct from draining fully, and the milk becomes stuck or “set” in the duct. Physiotherapy is an extremely effective first line of treatment which involves gentle massage and ultrasound therapy to help settle inflammation and clear the duct; and use of warm and cold packs. If the blocked duct fails to clear, a mother is at risk of developing mastitis. This is an inflammatory condition that can be accompanied by an infection. If the set milk fails to clear, new milk will form behind the blockage and cause pressure on the duct and surrounding tissue, causing an inflammatory reaction. Mastitis is often diagnosed by the symptoms of fever, flu-like symptoms, chills, a red, hot and tender breast, that often has a localised hard lump or wedge shaped area. Your physio will once again make use of massage and ultrasound therapy to help reduce the inflammation and assist in clearing the “set” milk from the ducts.

Ward Committee hosts clean-up campaign GOOD CAUSE: The w o m e n o f Sakamkanya area, Ward 1 were involved in a clean-up campaign hosted by Ward Committee member, Siphesihle Jomba on Women's Day. Jomba thanked KwaDukuza M u n i c i p a l i t y Environment and Waste Departments for assisting in the campaign. He also urged community members to make an effort to keep the area clean

Women's Day run a success

Moonsamy/Munisamy Raveend Fruit and Veg Champs

BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE

Leon Moonsamy and Julian Munisamy scooped the Raveend Fruit and Veg sponsored mixed doubles darts tournament hosted by the KwaDukuza Darts Association at the Quartz Sports Bar last Wednesday. 9 teams challenged for the title. In the top half of the draw, Jerry Govender and Meersing Sobram beat Vasa Rungasamy and Rowen Pillay 2 -0 to advance into the quarter final. Govender and Sobram who played scintillating darts went on to defeat Paddy Padayachee and Jodie Naidoo 2 -1 to book themselves a place in the semi-finals. The other game saw Tridev Singh and Jayson Moodley beat Keven Gounden and Terrence Subban 2-0 to set up a semifinal clash against Jerry Govender and Meersing Sobram. The bottom half of the draw saw Yogan Pillay and Jerry Arunachellum beat Vinesh Geanballey and Ajen Singh 2-0 to secure a place in the quarters. However Pillay and Arunachellum beat Kyle Pillay and Geanballey 2-0 to

secure a semi-final berth against Leon and Julian who earlier disposed of Nine Pillay and Ashton Muthoosamy 2-0. Jerry and Meersing beat Keven and Terrence in an evenly contested semi-final (2-1) to book themselves in the final. The second semi was even tighter with Leon and Julian beating Yogan and Jerry 2-1 to set up a mouthwatering final against Govender and Sobram. The final drew large crowd to witness the game. Jerry Govender and Meersing drew first blood in the opening game to lead 1-0. Leon and Julian kept their cool and replied well in the second set to level the scores 1-1. The third set was a humdinger as both sides scored well with high tallies. Leon and Julian, the rookies on the night, went on to win the third game in a high fashion to claim the Raveend Mixed double tournament. The association thanked Raveend for his sponsorship. Tonight the association will host a team doubles tournament.

Over the past weekend my "anger" was directed at the weather gods. How is it possible that one team has to bear the brunt of natural elements while the opponent has all the favourable conditions tilted towards it? At the beginning of last week the UK was enjoying hot and sunny weather conditions. But come Thursday and the weather changed dramatically. The first day's play in the second test between England and India at the home of cricket, Lord's, was completely washed out without a ball being bowled. The second day was overcast with intermittent rain, England won the toss and inserted India to bat. The conditions were ideal for swing bowling and the best bowler in

The ODI series between SA and Sri Lanka ended on Sunday with the Lankans winning the last match by a whopping 178 runs to reduce the score to 3-2. The last match of the tour, a T20 international, took place yesterday (Tues). A worrying factor for the Proteas is that when faced by spinners on a favourable wicket, they succumb rather meekly. In the last game, they were bundled out for 121 in less than 25 overs chasing a target of 300 runs with spinner, Akila Dananjaya claiming 6 scalps, establishing him as one of the most threatening spinners on the International circuit. Only stand-in skipper, Quinton de Kock, with 54 was able to counter the wiles of Dananjaya.

The Proteas return home to face the lightweight Zimbabwe in a series of ODIs and T20 games in early October. The last word. An appeal is made to the big sponsors of our three major sports, soccer, rugby and cricket, to step up to assist these smaller codes to fulfil their obligations towards their affiliates and players who make the national teams. There is no greater honour for an individual than to represent his/her country on the world stage. They should not be deprived owing to lack of funds in a country that ploughs billions of rands to privileged codes that are bloated with funding and whose players do not have to spend a cent to represent their country!

Winners of the various categories at the KDAC Women's Day Autism Fun Run

the world in this category, James Anderson, revelled under the laden sky and took 520 to skittle India for 107. Come the third day and sunshine returned to London. England, after being five down for 131, reached 357-6 at the end of an uninterrupted day of play with Jonny Bairstow (93) and Chris Woakes (120*) being involved in a partnership of 189 for the 6th wicket. On the 4th day (Sunday) the "bad" weather returned and after the home side had declared its innings early in the day, their swing bowlers went to town, dismantling the Indian toporder once again to be eventually bundled out for 130 with Anderson and Stuart Broad taking 4 wickets each and a victory by an innings and

KwaDukuza Athletic Club, in conjunction with the Department of Education hosted a successful Women's Day Autism Fun Run on 9 August 2018 at the Stanger Manor Community Grounds. This event, despite the cold weather and signs of rain proved to be a major success attracting numerous KwaDukuza schools and runners from all over. The support from the community and different schools was large. Gratitude goes to all sponsors who assisted in making this fun run a success.

159 runs. The Indian batsmen were all at sea to the swinging ball, made even more difficult by the overhead conditions. It must be said that some of them had inadequate techniques to counter top-class swing bowling and if such conditions prevail, then the Indian batsmen led by Virat Kohli must come to the party with better displays. Otherwise, a 50 whitewash is on the cards. This columnist's contention is that no visiting team should be subjected to weather conditions controlled by the gods that are totally stacked in favour of the home side. So unfair ! But to the credit of Kohli, he did not offer any excuses for the loss but praised the English bowlers for their skill levels. India will have to

Sabelo Mlambo blew away the field winning the senior male category with Sareena Moodley victorious in the female section Wiseman Mthembu claimed the junior male award with Anales Makaya winner in the female category. Amongst the events of the day, there were many prizes up for grabs. There was a raffle with the winning prize being a night's stay at Ayer Rock. There were also many lucky ticket draws on the ground.

get its selectio n spoton for the next test that Jayce Singh is a former b e g i n s sports administrator and Patron of the KZNCU o n Saturday at Trent Bridge. In the first test they omitted Chateshwar Pujara, one of their better batsmen, while in the second they dropped a seamer to include a second spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, who proved to be ineffective and expensive in conditions not favourable to spin bowling. Let's hope and pray for typical August weather for the next three tests without the gods providing an unfair one-sided advantage to the home side !

Manor host glittering 20th awards banquet

Yunus Moorad being honoured by Naren Singh with the Presidential award

From humble beginnings, Manor Cricket Club celebrated their 20th Anniversary with a glamorous and glitzy Awards Banquet which was held at the Quartz Conference Centre on Friday. Manor went out of their way inviting local comedian and artist

Mello Gilberts who had the crowd in stitches and London based SonAsh sisters who mesmerised the huge audience with their magical dance moves. The audience was filled with past players, members and invited guests, with local sporting hero, Yunus Moorad being the Guest Of Honour as the first coach of Manor and went on

to receive the President, Naren Singh's, special award for his immense contribution to Manor. In his address, Moorad congratulated the club and attributed it to the wonderful 'family spirit' that prevails at the club and the sacrifice and dedication shown by the officials. He added that being able to survive as a club, in an

area that is away from the cricketing centres for this length of time, is indeed a remarkable achievement. One of the founding members of the club, Desigan Pillay, said that he had decided to form the club with his childhood friends who played 'street cricket' in Stanger Manor. He said that he was grateful to Mahen

Reddy, the first captain of the club and Lex Maharaj who sacrificed his time and money to ensure that this dream was fulfilled. All past officials and players were honoured at the banquet. Manor were crowned the T20 champions in the 2017/18 season. Adesh Bageloo scooped the batting

award with Pillay receiving the bowling accolades. The most promising player was Kyle Chanakoo. The batsman of the year award was handed to Cameron Pillay who also scooped the coveted player of the season. The bowler of the year was Merryck Brown.

team, Sam Moonsamy said that he was very proud with the teams' performance and spirit. Meanwhile, in the local KDVA local league, Glenhills and Cool Leaders came through flying colours in their double header fixtures at the Stanger High courts last Wednesday. For the community's benefit‌

The Message of Eid ul Adha Wishing the Muslim Community Eid Mubarak and all Pilgrims - Hajj Mabroor Following in the footsteps of the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him), Muslims in South Africa celebrate Eid ul Adha on Wednesday, 22 August 2018.

SADICS Developing our Community

Whilst slaughtering an animal (sheep, cow, goat or camel) is one of the key characteristics of this day, Eid is also an occasion for reflection and assessment of one's life. Apart from satisfying the juristic rulings applicable to the actual sacrifice, Muslims are reminded to ponder over the lessons contained in the rites of Eid ul Adha. The aim of the sacrificial slaughter is not merely to generate meat for consumption, rather it is meant to create a spirit of submission, selflessness, humility and realization of the temporary nature of life. Slaughterers are reminded to cause no harm whatsoever to animals, to the extent that knives may not be sharpened in view of an animal going to be slaughtered nor should an animal witness the slaughter of another. Man must take note that he has no authority to harm the creation in any way, especially when fulfilling a religious obligation. The poor and needy have a share in the meat of the slaughtered animal and the owner of the animal may not benefit from it financially. This serves to remove any chance of an ulterior motive creeping in to the intention of the slaughterer and reminds us of the need to lead lives built on the platforms of sincerity and selfless devotion. Being a time for reflection, we also remember and pray for all those individuals throughout the world who have been affected by severe hardships and untold difficulties. Amongst them are the millions of Syrian refugees trying to gain some sort of security and stability for themselves and their children, the millions of human beings across the planet who don't have access to drinking water, food and education. Eid isn't about having more food or clothes; it's about becoming more. More caring, more humble, more sincere,

more human. Courtesy of Ml. Junaid Kajee

A FEW DESIRABLE (MUSTAHAB) ACTS OF QURBANI (SACRIFICE) 1.To face Qiblah when slaughtering. 2.It is recommended that one's Qurbani should be distributed in three portions, a third for yourself, a third for relatives and a third for the poor A FEW UNDESIRABLE (MAKROOH) ACTS OF QURBANI 1.Slaughtering an animal in the presence of other animals. 2.Sharpening the knife In front of the animal to be slaughtered. 3.Placing the head of a live animal in the blood of other animals that were slaughtered. 4.Delaying the slaughter when the animal is already on the ground. 5.Using a blunt knife. 6.Breaking the neck of an animal while still alive i.e. immediately after slaughter, whilst there is movement in the animal. 7.Skinning the animal while there are still signs of life.

IMPORTANT ADVICE 1.Ensure that payments for Qurbani are honoured timeously and to the letter. 2.The Prophet (peace be upon him) strongly warned those persons who do have the means but do not carry out this important function for Qurbani in the following words, “He who has the means to do Qurbani but does not do so should not attend Eid Prayer." 3.Animals should be kept in areas with proper ventilation, transported in ventilated vehicles, fed well and given clean water to drink. 4.Rinse the carcass inside and out to avoid blood and smell remaining on the carcass. 5.Store carcass in a chiller or a cool area for a day for firmness and ease of slicing.
