KDM mourns death of newly elected councillor By Xpress Reporter

DECEASED: The late IFP councillor Dicco Nombuso Mkhize

One of the newly elected councillors of KwaDukuza Municipality has passed away. Cllr Dicco Nombuso Mkhize passed away on Sunday the 5th of December 2021, just a few weeks after being inaugurated as the IFP's PR councillor. KwaDukuza mayor Cllr Octavia Nhaca has described Cllr Mkhize's

death as “devastating”. “It is indeed with great sadness that we learn of such devastating news. While we were not afforded an opportunity to know her better, we will remember her as a humble servant of the people, a firm voice of her constituency. On behalf of the Council, we send our deepest condolences to the family,” the mayor stated. The IFP's KZN provincial

chairperson Thami Ntuli has described the deceased as a “loyal and dedicated member of the party”. Ntuli said Mkhize, who was at the time of death a member of the party's provincial executive committee (PEC), joined the IFP back in 1997, becoming publicity secretary of the IFP Youth Brigade, later becoming chairperson of the IFP Youth Brigade in Lindelani, KwaDukuza.

“The IFP in KZN wishes to convey its deepest condolences to the family of Ms Mkhize, her close friends and to the IFP at large. As the IFP family, we deeply mourn her passing. Ms Mkhize was a humble, loyal and dedicated Member of the Party and always ready to assist with any task. “During the 2021 Local Government Elections she played a crucial role in many activities aimed at building recruitment and bringing back municipalities to the party. She worked tirelessly within iLembe District,” Ntuli concluded. The deceased was laid to rest in Lindelani, KwaDukuza, on Saturday.

Innocent life lost during home invasion Continued from Page 1 alleged that the victim and his family were asleep, when they heard a kitchen window breaking in their home, a suspect entered the victim's home armed with a knife, and stabbed the 40-year old victim multiple times on his back and chest, the victim ran out of his house and collapsed outside, he was later declared deceased. The suspects stole three cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash. The matter is being investigated by KwaDukuza SAPS Detectives,” said Priya Nunkumar, KwaDukuza SAPS Communications Officer. Gledhow residents have also voiced their concerns over a succession of criminal activities that

plague the area, in a series of social media posts, residents have asked the KwaDukuza SAPS to increase bluelight patrols on the R102 near the bridge and Lark-field. “We have to live in fear of these scum, garbage, trash. We the people of Gledhow require assistance in our area due to the high crime rate, four incidents in one week. Three stabbings, one life lost, is a cell phone more important than a life? Filthy conditions of the renowned Mdonville Hall in Ward 16 has left most residents in shock. The bad conditions of this hall were

GUTTED: The Cele family lost everything after their home was destroyed by fire

because her sewing machine was also destroyed by fire. ActionSA councillors and volunteers visited the Cele family on Thursday to assess the extent of the damages and to assist the family with groceries and hygiene items. The family of four are in desperate need of assistance, and ActionSA KwaDukuza is appealing to all residents and local businesses to assist the family with groceries, clothing, furniture, cash donations and building materials for the house. ActionSA councillor, Comfort Mwandla, said: “It is important that we come together as a community to assist the Cele family who has suffered a significant loss and are currently going through a challenging time. We want to encourage others in the KwaDukuza area to join us and help the family rebuild their home and return them to normal living as soon as possible.” If you would like to assist the Cele family please contact Councillor Comfort Mwandla on 0655844322 or 0845025272.

revealed by a resident who had requested the use of the facility for a specific event, prior to the event, the resident went to view the facility and came face to face with the poor conditions of the hall. The hall looks it hasn't been maintained in a while, with restroom looking like something out of Zombie film. Ward 16 residents have taken up the baton to call on local authorities to action urgent intervention and have the venue completely renovated and repaired. “I booked the Mdonville Hall for a specific purpose and went to view it prior to the event. The pics contained herein clearly depict the state of neglect this Hall is in. Many questions about oversight, control, responsibility and accountability arise iro of this situation. This Hall is an asset of the Municipality and for it to be in this state, questions have to be asked and heads ought to roll,” said the irked resident.

Ramaphosa tests positive for Covid-19 POSITIVE: President Cyril Ramaphosa has tested positive for Covid-19

President Cyril Ramaphosa is receiving treatment for mild Covid-19 symptoms after testing positive for the viral infection today, Sunday, 12 December 2021. The President started feeling unwell after leaving the State Memorial Service in honour of former Deputy President FW de Klerk in Cape Town on Sunday.. The President is said to be in good spirits. He is being monitored by the South African Military Health Service of the South African National Defence Force. “The President, who is fully vaccinated, is in selfisolation in Cape Town and has delegated all responsibilities to Deputy President David Mabuza for the next week. On his recent visit to four West African

states, President Ramaphosa and the South African delegation were tested for COVID-19 in all countries. “The President and the delegation returned to South Africa from the Republic of Senegal on Wednesday, 8 December 2021, after obtaining negative test results. The President also tested negative on his return to Johannesburg on 8 December,” stated Minister in the President Mondli Gungubele. President Ramaphosa says his own infection serves as a caution to all people in the country to be vaccinated and remain vigilant against exposure. “Vaccination remains the best protection against severe illness and hospitalisation,” Gungubele

“Prepare for national census in 22,” says Zikalala The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Executive Council, led by Premier Sihle Zikalala, held its final sitting for the year 2021, on Wednesday 08 December 2021. Sihle Zikalala used the occasion to urge the people of KwaZulu-Natal to prepare for national census 2022. Statistics South Africa will undertake a population and housing census, “Census 2022”, from 2nd February 2022, this will be the fourth

population count since 1994. “The Executive Council, therefore, urges all KwaZulu-Natal citizens to prepare themselves and to be ready to stand up and be counted. This is critical so that our Province can receive an adequate amount of resources and funds proportionate to its real population that lives and resides within the Province. As a Province, we have in the previous census lost a significant chunk of the b u d g e t allocation after it emerged that our population numbers had declined and t h i s i s something which in our view was an undercount

PREMEIR: Sihle Zikalala

due to poor participation by the citizens of the province. We, therefore, call upon all citizens to get ready to be counted in order for resource allocations to meet the needs of the population of KwaZulu-Natal,” said Zikalala. The Provincial Government appeals to homeowners throughout the Province to welcome Census

officials into their homes and provide them with accurate information, and for communities to ensure their safety. “We welcome the jobcreation element of the Census and we encourage that youth and women be recruited for fieldwork activities that include data collection, clerical, administrative and other roles,” added Zikalala.

Significance of Reconciliation Day 16 December is a day of great significance in South Africa due to two historical events that took place. The first of these was in 1838, when the Battle of Blood River took place between the Voortrekkers and the Zulus. The Voortrekkers, having moved into the interior of South Africa during the Great Trek, were eager to settle on land. The region that they intended to settle on was already inhabited by the Zulu people. Thus the Voortrekker leader, Piet Retief was eager to negotiate with the Zulu chief Dingane. Having misunderstood Retief's intentions, Dingane planned an ambush and murdered Retief and his party of 100 people. This act culminated in the Battle of Blood River, in which 470 Voortrekkers, having the advantage of

gunpowder, defeated the 10 000 strong Zulu army. This Voortrekker victory was commemorated since then as the Day of the Vow. The second historical event that took place on 16 December was in 1961, when Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) was formed. This was the military wing of the African National Congress (ANC), which was launched to wage an armed struggle against the apartheid government. Prior to its formation, the ANC had largely approached the fight against apartheid through passive resistance, but after the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, where peaceful protestors were indiscriminately shot by police, passive resistance was no longer seen as an effective approach in bringing apartheid to an end. MK

mostly performed acts of sabotage, but its effectiveness was hampered by organizational problems and the arrest of its leaders in 1963. Despite this, its f o r m a t i o n w a s commemorated every year since 1961. South Africa's first non-racial and democratic government was tasked with promoting reconciliation and national unity. One way in which it aimed to do this symbolically was to acknowledge the significance of the 16 December in both the Afrikaner and liberation struggle traditions and to rename this day as the Day of Reconciliation. On 16 December 1995, the Day of Reconciliation was celebrated as a public holiday in South Africa for the first time.

Commission cracks whip on Covid-19 test pricing The Competition Commission has announced a drastic reduction in the cost of taking a Covid-19 test, after reaching an agreement with two private laboratories. On 8 October 2021, the Competition Commission received a formal complaint from the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) against private pathology laboratories alleging that the price for supplying PCR tests for Covid-19 is unfairly inflated, exorbitant and/or unjustifiable. “Between September and October 2021, the Commission was alerted through a number of meetings and telephonic discussions (including discussions with the Department of Health and

A tribute to our own “Super Ma”- Ma of all Mothers M r s E l l a m a Jagganath, known Ma Ella to many in the town of Stanger and surrounding areas reached a milestone on the 22 November 2021, when she turned 90 years. A surprise party with much glitz and glamour to honor her life was held with close friends and family at the Gledhow Emperumal Temple Hall. Majee Ella stood the test of time through harsh realities of world war, the great depression and the recent Covid 19 pandemic. She is full of zeal and enthusiasm. She believes that age is just a number and an able body and mind can move mountains. Her mind is super sharp and she is still an eloquent speaker, usually programme directing many religious functions. Mrs Jagganath was born Westville on 22 November 1931. She and her late spouse (Mr H Jagganath former deputy principal, KwaDukuza Primary School) moved to Stanger in 1975. They both took up educator posts at KwaDukuza Primary School and Umhlali Primary School respectively. She later moved to Stanger High School, Stanger Manor Primary and finally to Stanger Training Centre where she retired in 1991. M any doctors, engineers, lawyers,

professionals and tradesmen went through the hands of our devoted and dedicated Ma. She was just not a practitioner of pedagogics, but also a student as well when she qualified as a Reiki Master at the age of 82. She is still an avid reader and also assists pupils to date with Afrikaans speeches. The love and compassion she shows for follow beings, is full of exuberance. Ma served various communities like High ridge, Indian Village, Glenhills, Gledhow to name but a few in Stanger with distinction and devotion. Mrs Jagganath also served on many Social and Welfare organizations. Ma put

her heart and soul to whatever she did for the communities. No task or project was left unfinished. Mrs Jagganath is a profound individual, who serves humanity with her undivided attention, timeously. Ma is an excellent role model and mentor to both young and old. Her Principles, ethics, morals and values in life speak volumes of her personality. Ma's character and personality traits of Mannerism, Gracefulness, Poise, Respect and Kindness, to name a few captured the hearts of anyone who came into contact with her. The wisdom and wealth of experience that Ma has, has helped to groom many an individual.

After serving the community of Stanger at large, Ma is focusing on her spiritual world and journey. Her divine knowledge and wisdom of the spiritual world is like the “Northern Star” to us and the future generations. Mrs Jagganath is presently an active member and devotee of the G l e d h o w Emperumal Temple Society. Ma is a pillar of strength to the congregation and its membership. As humble as she is and in a soft spoken voice, her words penetrate and piece the minds and hearts of those that come in contact with her. Her words are full of warmth and love. Her principle of “Be good and Do good”, has earned her this milestone of 90 years. Our fervent wish and prayer is for Ma, to enjoy good health, many more birthdays, and CENTURY to come. Ma, you will always be honored and remembered for the good that you did and are doing, for the people, you have touched physically and emotionally of KwaDukuza. God bless you! ELLAMA…. By Xpress Reporter

Maphumulo Local Municipality hosted successful Disability Selection Games at Maphumulo Thusong Centre Arena, last week. The municipality says

the games were well attended by people living with disabilities and well-wishers. The purpose of the games was to select a team to represent Maphumulo in the district games.

People living with disabilities had a great moment as they competed in various sport codes. Part of the strategic objectives of the event is to promote healthy lifestyle and to promote

disability sport development in the area. Maphumulo mayor Siboniso Nyathikazi used the occasion to encourage all participants to lead healthy lifestyles and to also encourage others to do the same. “We are humbled by such an overwhelming response by people l i v i n g w i t h disabilities. However it is our hope to see more people participating. As the municipality we encourage our people to live healthily. “Disabled people are an integral part of our society, and they are also free and encouraged to participate in sports up to international level. We appeal to the community of Maphumulo to support disabled athletes as they move on to compete in the district level,” Cllr Nyathikazi stated.

KwaDukuza Mayor delivers message of support for the 2021 Chief Albert Luthuli Tournament The Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality, Cllr. Lindile Octavia Nhaca, attended the Chief Albert Luthuli Tournament Launch and Draw at Luthuli Museum in Groutville today, Wednesday 08 December, and has hailed sports as a catalyst to the development of children and the youth in our communities. The Chief Albert Luthuli Tournament is one of a variety of initiatives hosted by the Luthuli Museum and its partners to preserve and honour the legacy of Chief Albert Luthuli. This year, the tournament coincides with the 60th Anniversary of Chief Albert Luthuli receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Furthermore, it serves as a precursor for the upcoming Chief Albert Luthuli Memorial Lecture that will be held on Friday, 10 December 2021 to be delivered by former RSA and ANC President, Mr Thabo Mbeki. Mayor Nhaca described Chief Albert Luthuli as an eminent son of the African soil who died under mysterious

circumstances and expressed that his death remains unconvincing up to this day. “Luthuli, amongst others, remains the architect of the democratic South Africa that was delivered in 1994 – he paid a hefty price for progress. He would work closely with Goolam Suleman and EV Mohammed here at home to advance the liberation movement. He would receive support from both men in facilitating underground ANC meetings. “He carried in his shoulders, the unenviable task of leading the African National Congress (ANC) and one of the responsibilities of the democratic government is to recognise the role played by those who contributed in various ways to the liberation of the people of South Africa so that their contribution is not erased from the memory of the nation.” remarked Mayor Nhaca. Mayor Nhaca informed the house that the municipality’s support for this tournament was based on the premise that sport

has psychological benefits for children and adolescents and teaches them important life skills. As well as, that organised sporting events, such as this tournament, have m a n y psychological and social benefits for children even more than the physical activity during play. “Playing sport helps children learn to control their emotions and channel negative feelings in a positive way. It also helps children to develop patience and understand that it can take a lot of practice to improve both their physical skills and what they do in school. “An important part of playing in a team is accepting discipline. Playing sport means children are expected to follow rules, accept decisions and understand that they could be penalised for bad behaviour. It teaches them to take directions from the coach, referees and other adults.

Sport also teaches them about teamwork.” commented Mayor Nhaca In her closing remarks, Mayoress Nhaca wished all the teams well and thanked the organisers for giving the children and youth of KwaDukuza an opportunity to showcase their talent whilst engaged in development facets that will shape who they become tomorrow. “We wish to thank all sponsors and partners across various levels for committing their strongest support for this tournament.” remarked Mayor Nhaca.

Champions League redraw sees PSG take on Real Madrid, Man United face Atletico Paris Saint-Germain will play Real Madrid while Liverpool take on Inter Milan in two of the standout ties in the last 16 of the Champions League after an embarrassed UEFA was forced to redo Monday's draw following a "technical problem". PSG had initially been paired together with Manchester United in a tie that would have seen old rivals Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo come up against one another. However, the reworked draw sees them play record 13-time European champions Real while the Old Trafford side will face Spanish champions Atletico Madrid. UEFA had earlier blamed a "material error" due to a "technical problem with the software of an external service provider" as it announced that the draw for the first knockout round of its flagship competition would have to be redone three hours later. With the draw being streamed live from UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, the problem was made evident when Manchester United's name was drawn to face Villarreal, despite the fact the two clubs could not have played one another having been in the same group. The ball containing United's name did not then appear to be replaced

correctly and so they were not included as possible opponents for the next team to come out of the pot. With the whole draw compromised, a red-faced UEFA was left with little choice but to start again. Qatar-owned PSG, with their array of attacking stars in Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria, now face a Real side currently top of La Liga, managed by former Paris coach Carlo Ancelotti. The Spaniards knocked PSG out at the same stage of the competition in 2017/18 and relations between the clubs have recently been at a low ebb with Real openly courting the signature of Mbappe, whose contract expires at the end of this season. Madrid are unlikely to be happy with the new draw as they had initially been given an easier tie on paper against Benfica in the very first match-up before the problems occurred. Liverpool face a similar situation. Having initially been drawn against knockout-phase debutants Red Bull Salzburg of Austria, they now face three-time former winners Inter, the Serie A champions and current Italian league leaders. Jurgen Klopp's side beat Inter's city rivals AC Milan twice in the group stage. Salzburg instead got six-time winners Bayern Munich, while last season's beaten finalists Manchester City take on Sporting Lisbon and We require the services of a hands on Benfica will play Ajax. have been paired with Bayern or Madrid having come second behind Juventus in Group H, will be relieved at that draw. United's tie against Atletico means the Spanish club coming up against Ronaldo, who has knocked them out of the competition five times in the last decade, including winning two Madrid derby finals when with Real. The first legs will be played in the second half of February with second legs in early March. This season's Champions League final will be played in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg on May 28. The mess-up with the draw comes at a bad time for the European game's governing body, at the end of a year in which relations with some of the continent's biggest clubs were soured by the botched attempt at a breakaway 12-team Super League. UEFA will soon introduce a new format for the Champions League group stage from 2024 which will see the number of clubs involved increase from 32 to 36 with each team guaranteed 10 group games compared to the current six. A penalty-filled Premier League weekend

Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea remain separated by just two points at the top of the Premier League after all three relied on penalties to win this weekend. Manchester United also needed a spot-kick and a man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeper David de Gea to see off lowly Norwich before becoming the latest English club to be hit by a coronavirus outbreak. At the other end of the table, Newcastle failed to take advantage of Leicester's seven Covid absentees in a 4-0 thrashing by the Foxes, but the Magpies remain just three points off safety as none of the bottom eight in the table won.

failed to make any sort of impact when introduced off the bench. Lukaku was signed to be the final piece of the jigsaw for a squad that were already Champions League winners. If Chelsea are to keep pace with City and Liverpool they need him to refind the form he showed for Inter over the past two seasons to become one of the most feared strikers in Europe.

Manchester goal stopper David de Gea

Natural parents sought

Penalty points for top three The top three now enjoy an eight-point gap over the rest of the league and had fortune on their side to pull away from the pack even on a day where none of the title contenders hit top form. City remain out in front thanks to two major decisions going their way in a 1-0 win over Wolves. Raul Jimenez was sent off before half-time for two quickfire yellow cards, the first of which was extremely harsh. Even then the 10 men held the champions at bay until Joao Moutinho was wrongly adjudged to have handled Bernardo Silva's cross and VAR did not intervene to overturn referee Jon Moss' original decision. Steven Gerrard was also angered by refereeing calls as his return to Liverpool as Aston Villa manager ended in a 1-0 defeat. Mohamed Salah's penalty 23 minutes from time was just reward for the Reds' dominance, but Villa had strong appeals for their own spot-kick waved away late on when Alisson Becker brought down Danny Ings.

Rodgers looking forward to facing Gerard's Villa Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers says hes is looking forward to facing former Liverpool colleague Steven Gerard's Aston Villa. Chelsea needed two penalties, the last of

which came deep into stoppage time, to see off Leeds 3-2 to stop them dropping points for the fourth time in six league games. "We needed this win desperately, for the belief, for the mood and for the atmosphere," said Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

De Gea papers over Man Utd cracks United were also grateful to Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty to beat bottom-of-thetable Norwich, but the performance left a lot to be desired for those hoping to see an instant improvement under interim manager Ralf Rangnick. The Canaries were prevented from moving off the foot of the table by a string of outstanding saves from David de Gea as the Spaniard produced a miraculous stop to turn Teemu Pukki's powerful drive over and twice denied Ozan Kabak late on. Amid a desperately disappointing season for United, De Gea is enjoying a renaissance as he was often the only player to emerge with any credit from the final days of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign. "I'm feeling very good, very strong, very confident," said De Gea, who lost his place to Dean Henderson for a spell of last season. "The most important

thing is helping the team with my experience." Despite an underwhelming start, back-to-back 1-0 wins for Rangnick have lifted United to within one point of the top four. Victory at Brentford on Tuesday would take them into the Champions League places, as long as that match can go ahead after reports of multiple Covid cases in the United camp.

Lacklustre Lukaku Chelsea just about got the three points they needed despite Tuchel leaving record signing Romelu Lukaku on the bench for all but the final three minutes. Lukaku scored his first goal since September in a 3-3 draw with Zenit St Petersburg in midweek that cost the Blues top spot in their Champions League group. The Belgian started his second spell at Stamford Bridge brightly after a £97 million move from Inter Milan with four goals in his first four games. But his season was derailed by an ankle injury nearly two months ago, just days after Tuchel admitted the 28-year-old was suffering from physical and mental fatigue. He returned to fitness two weeks ago, but has not started any of Chelsea's last four league games and has
