Deputy President visits KwaDukuza
LEADERSHIP: ANC leadership during a community engagement held at Stanger Manor Community Hall on Thursday.
By Thokozani Mnguni
A
NC Deputy President, David Mabuza visited ward 17 in KwaDukuza on Thursday, 10 January 2018 to address hundreds of party members on the importance of unity heading to the 2019 General Election. Speaking to the masses at Stanger Manor Community Hall, Mabuza applauded Kwazulu-Natal ANC members for building a vibrant and formidable ANC in the province. “It brings joy to see ANC members dedicate themselves to the movement of the party. When we are divided, we are weak. When we are busy at each other's throats, we are not even noticing that we become weak,” said Mabuza. During his address, Mabuza highlighted that the ANC will not relent and watch the country go
back to the dark days of apartheid. He was referring to a recent incident in Cape Town where a feud broke out between black and white citizens in Clifton Fourth. “People from the whole country can take a pattern from the people of Stanger. In this hall we have black, coloured and Indian together. This is the kind of South Africa we fought for, keep it up. We (ANC) seem to be veering away from our strategic objectives, because when the ANC was founded we said we want to create a non-racial South Africa. Every day we hear racial remarks. In certain areas some people were denied going to the beach recently. We can't allow South Africa to go back to that dark period.” In his conclusion he assured the fully packed hall that the government and relevant
stakeholders are working tirelessly to strengthen the economy and create jobs but urged South Africans to be innovative and create their own businesses. Mabuza also said that these engagements with various communities are intended to reflect on the failures of the party and work towards reviving the organisation. ANC chairperson in the ward 17 branch, Fameda Hoosen expressed that as a newly launched branch of the ANC, they were delighted to host the Deputy President. “As the branch we warmly welcome Mr Mabuza and we were delighted that he touched on how we can combat gender based Continued on Page 5

is to supply an additional 55Ml/d of treated water to the coastal and inland areas of KwaDukuza and Mandeni. The water purification scheme was necessitated by a
strong supply demand, precipitated by the growth of local municipalities within the district. KwaDukuza Municipality is a direct beneficiary of the
project as it expands to areas along the North Coast region including Groutville and Ballito. The scheme will also supply the rural areas of Bulwer, San Soucci and St Christopher, as well as Darnall, Zinkwazi and Blythedale. Minister Pamela Tshwete urged the local community to use water sparingly. In his remarks, Dlungwane cited that in the past, school functionality programmes have yielded positive results. “As a department we strongly believe that this programme will assist teachers in identifying challenges in the school and improve the quality of basic education,” he said. Manor Primary school principal Mr I. Abraham articulated that the school as a whole is delighted to be part of this programme. In KwaMaphumulo, where MEC Dlungwane initiated the programme of the day, a candle was lit to curb violence in schools and as respect for teachers and learners who have passed on.
The KwaDukuza Municipality's Youth Development Business Unit engaged in a youth outreach programme aimed at bringing support closer to youth wishing to apply for financial assistance as well as caters for the IEC's address harvesting drive. This programme took place from Wednesday, 9 January 2019 to 15 January 2019. It has seen children primarily from disadvantaged communities being afforded an opportunity to apply for funds that will enable them to register at institutions of higher learning across the country as they pursue tertiary education. Speaking at the programme held at Thembeni Community Hall, the Manager of Youth and Sports Development Mr. Wiseman Cele, said “KwaDukuza Municipality under the leadership of His Worship, Dr. Ricardo Mthembu, has initiated this programme because of realizing the need in the communities and because also we want you to pursue and further your education. We are therefore opening a window to receive applications until Friday, 18 January 2019.” He added that although there is a drive in communities, youth could still submit their applications at the Youth and Local Economic

Development Centre in Hullet Street. The host councillor of the Thembeni Community which is in Ward 12, Councillor Ntokozo Mbatha, alluded to the fact that when such opportunities are brought to communities as opposed to them being centralized, many people are able to get access. He also highlighted that it becomes easier even for the applicants to complete the forms correctly when assistance is close by. “We want to thank the Youth Office for the improved delivery of this programme. I urge all the youth present here today to use this opportunity to the maximum and to exhaust all questions each individual may have regarding this
financial assistance scheme. “I want to also remind everyone here, to register to vote, the IEC has announced the dates for its second and final voter registration weekend for the 2019 national and provincial elections. Our voting station which Mbekamuzi and all other voting stations will be open from 08h00 to 17h00 on Saturday 26 January and Sunday 27 January 2019 to allow new voters to register and existing voters to update and to check their registration details. All those aged 16 and older in possession of an official ID document can register as voters, although only those who are at least 18 years old on voting day may vote,” concluded Mbatha.

Members conducted the operation together with Kwazulu-Natal SAPS Mounted Unit, KwaDukuza Municipal Traffic and Crime Prevention Department, KwaDukuza Fire and Emergency Services, Provincial RTI based in Groutville, all emergency services and all local security companies. The intensive operation led to the arrest of two murder suspects, two rape suspects and 21 arrests for assault GBH. According to SAPS, the team also arrested three house robbery

suspects, 12 drunk drivers and two suspects illegally in possession of firearms. Members also arrested 17 suspects who were in possession of drugs, including rock cocaine and whoonga. The Festive Season Operation created awareness throughout KwaDukuza. Due to the high visibility of the members during the operation, members were able to effectively disrupt 19 shoplifting syndicates, nab 33 suspects for illegally dealing in liquor and arrest 10 suspects for theft. Members also conducted visits to KwaDukuza Mall to promote the KwaDukuza SAPS 'Festive Season Safety Hand Guide' which informs members of the community on staying safe
during the Festive Season, and on being extra vigilant every day. KwaDukuza SAPS Station Commander, Brigadier S.F. Mhlongo commended all members who worked during the Festive Season Multi-disciplinary Operation on the excellent successes brought in. “We will be having operations continuously to drastically reduce crime and create a high visibility throughout the KwaDukuza area. However, KwaDukuza SAPS requests the public to assist in the fight against crime by being proactive members of the community. Should you have a tip off, or want to supply the KwaDukuza SAPS with important information, contact me on 082 376 2591”, she said. Head, Neck & Shoulder

school. This was one of the schools which achieved below 40% in the 2018 matric results. The Back to School initiative was to help identify as well as act on challenges the school is facing that lead to poor performance and to help improve the results for the 2018 academic year and in the future. Her Worship also had a chance to speak to the matric class of 2019. “You are our future and the school system strives to always teach and keep you safe in order for you to have a prosperous future. Your hard work and determination will help you reap a prosperous future. This is your last hurdle within the basic education system, you must make it a memorable one and make yourselves, our community and the nation proud,” said Mayor Khuzwayo-Dlamini.

The beauty of listening to commentary on radio or TV is that one is transformed to the venue in time and space as one is not present there physically. Therefore, it is incumbent on the commentators to be impartial on air no matter whom they support personally. However, this was not the case on Sunday afternoon during the last hour of play when Pakistan was batting and Asad Shafiq and Babar Azam were playing delightful text-book shots against the much-vaunted SA pace attack. Not a single complimentary word of praise was used to describe what we were seeing on TV. Instead what was dished out was the most one-sided, blatant bit of bias and parochialism that only SA commentators can indulge in. The quicker that Supersport can rid themselves of such partial employees, the better it will be for the station. Personnel like Michael Holding, Rameez Raja and Kevin Pietersen are so different in their approach and maintain the ethics of broadcasting. May they continue to be engaged by DSTV. Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.
